“Fool Me Once” - Part 5
Pairing: Kacchako, Bakugou Katsuki/Uraraka Ochako
CW: Cheating, Underage Drinking
<- Previous Part | From the Beginning
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Katsuki was able to spend the rest of the weekend in seclusion.
The small stash of food he kept in his dorm room mini fridge and the convection cooktop he stored under his bed for the nights the more inept members of his class had cooking duty served him well, allowing him to stay in his little bubble. A bubble where everything was quiet, where he could get lost in books, build that Gundam model his mom bought for him last Christmas. No manga or music though. The manga he read was much too… optimistic, and the music would mean his phone would have to be on.
Maybe for this Christmas he’d ask for a record player. Anything to make cell phones less of a necessary evil than they already were, filled with stupid text messages, and pictures, and status updates, and shame, and guilt.
He couldn’t do anything about the necessary evil known as time, however, but if he ever met someone with a Time Manipulation quirk he’d sure as shit make good friends with them if it meant avoid shit like the long, agonizing walk to Homeroom after shattering one of your best friends’ heart and lying to her about it.
Well not lying, omitting the truth about it.
Going behind her back and manipulating her.
Betraying her and having the gaul to think he did it for her honor.
And then ignore her after the fact because he was too much of a self-loathing selfish prick to take his fucking guilt on the chin.
Maybe he should call out sick. His stomach was starting to cramp.
“Bakubro!” Eijirou called, giving Katsuki a moment of warning before he clapped his hand onto his shoulder. “I thought you died or something! Were you that hung over? The guys and I’ve been texting you like crazy.”
Katsuki glanced over to find the redhead smiling much too tightly, his jaw tense, a vein bulging in the corner of his temple. Ei’s eyes shifted, gesturing over and over again to something just behind them.
Katsuki, against his best interest, looked over his shoulder and found a mound of pink curls and two, watery, black eyes.
“Oh Kitty Kat!” Mina lamented, taking his attention as permission to hug him. “I’m so sorry! You must be so heartbroken!”
Her arms, meant to be comforting, felt like a vice around his waist.
“I’m proud of you for coming out today. And I’m so so so sorry for not checking in on you! I was just so worried about Chako Chip that—
“Don’t worry about it, Pinky,” he patted her hand before peeling her arms off of him. He cleared his throat and asked the question he’d been avoiding. “How’s she holding up?”
Mina pursed her lips into a sour pout. “I was hoping you’d know.”
Katsuki’s chest hurt. “Why the hell would I know?”
“Because both of you have been holed up in your rooms since that night. I figured if y’all weren’t talking to us you’d at least be talking with each other.” She turned to Eijirou and grabbed his arm. “Now I’m really worried, Ei. Chako wasn’t at breakfast this morning. Tsu hasn’t—”
Eijirou took her hand in his and brought it up to his lips to kiss her knuckles. “I’m sure she just needs time, babe.” His eyes left her face to look at Katsuki. “You sure you’ve heard nothing?”
“My phone’s been off.” He fished the glorified glass brick out of his pocket. “I could check.”
“Yeah, check it once we get to class, bro.” He grabbed Katsuki’s shoulder again, a slight bit of tension in the hold that only made Katsuki’s stomach cramp more. “Don’t be surprised if you get a bunch of notifs though, we all were trying to get a hold of you.”
Katsuki rolled his shoulder to knock Ei’s hand off. “You could have knocked, ya know? I fucking live next door to you.”
 “’Unless you’re dying, I’m dying, or the whole class is fucking dying, don’t fucking knock on my door,’” Ei replied in his best, curmudgeonly impression of the blond. “I didn’t hear you die, and you weren’t responding to texts so—” He shrugged. “I figured you just needed space.”
What I need is for whatever you want me to look at on my phone to not be there, Katsuki thought. Instead he just tsked, and rolled his eyes. “Fine. Right call. I would have blasted your face in.”
The walk down the hall to their homeroom was haunting. Was the hall always this quiet? Did it always echo their footsteps like that? Katsuki’s palms were sweating, his cramping stomach knotting tighter and tighter with each step. The only thing keeping him moving was his own stubbornness and the pair of footsteps trailing right behind him.
He grabbed the door handle, grip a little more crushing than intended, and held his breath as he opened it – not knowing what to find.
They were greeted with laughter. Happy, bubbly laughter.
Much too happy, bubbly laughter from someone who’s heart had been ripped out of her chest just short of 48 hours ago.
Ochako was laughing up a storm with Denki and Hanta, Tsu standing by her side the only ill-fitting piece to the scene with her uneasy smile compared to the wide grins of the others. The uneasy smile drifted towards Mina, froggy eyes pleading in confusion, searching for an answer Katsuki knew Mina couldn’t give.
He couldn’t give it either, unable to help his direct befuddled glare at her as he stepped beside her.
“Hey, Bakugou!” Her chipper disposition hit his chest before rising up to meet his face. “I was hoping you’d show up. You feeling better?”
“Yeah. Cheeks. Doing just peachy.” He scanned her expression, watching carefully for the truth behind that megawatt smile. There was no way she’d recovered that quickly. When her favorite manga ended she was red-eyed and mopey for a full week after. And that series had a happy ending. “And you?”
She shrugged and giggled. A forced giggle. More even and clipped on the edges, that her usual melodic laugh. “Finally got over my headache, thank goodness.” She looked to Denki and Hanta and rolled her eyes. “Remind me never to mix schnapps and vodka again.”
They laughed.
“I’m telling ya ‘Chako you gotta go green with me one day,” Hanta said. “No more hangovers, still having a good time, and it’ll save your liver.”
Ochako giggled again. “Maybe next time.” She turned back to Katsuki. “I wanted to ask if you were feeling up to a spar session tonight.”
“Tonight?” He looked past the bright facade in her eyes and found the pleading. Guilt made his chest ache. “What time?”
“Anytime works for me. Just gotta finish up whatever homework we get assigned today then I’m free as a bird.”
“We got that thing after dinner, Bakubro, remember?” Hanta interjected, pointedly staring at him. This had to be part of whatever bullshit Eijirou was hinting at.
Katsuki groaned. “It ain’t gonna take the whole fucking night, will it?”
“I don’t think so, but ya never know. When us guys get together—”
“How’s seven sound?” He cut him off. He didn’t want to spend anymore time necessary with the fuckers right now. Not when they were the dumbasses that got him into this fucking mess.
Ochako’s smile inched even wider. “Seven sounds, perfect. Meet you at our usual room?”
“Yup.”
The warning bell rang, prompting them to take their seats.The desk behind Katsuki’s remained empty.
Course the nerd wouldn’t show the fuck up. The future number one is probably clutching All Might’s pant leg crying about—
Aizawa entered the room just before the late bell rang, Izuku following behind with his head down before he broke off to take his seat.
Katsuki fought against the urge to trip him, and instead pulled out his phone to keep from giving the nerd the satisfaction of a death glare and turned it on. It shook in his hand violently as he held it hidden under his desk, each pulse of a new notification slicking his palms in more sweat. He wiped his hand on his pants, passing the phone from hand to hand so it wouldn’t slip out and clatter on the floor until the buzzing stopped.
42 notifications. The top message read: “Operation Milo Emergency Meeting. 2nd floor study hall, library north wing. 6pm.”
Fuck.
🔍🔍🔍🔍🔍
“So,” Hanta said with a heavy sigh. “That didn’t go as planned.”
“Of course it fucking didn’t, numbnuts!” Katsuki roared, voice shaking off the sound proof glass. “Where’s you fucking ‘class unity’ now, huh?!”
“I’m sure it ain’t that bad guys,” Tetsu naively reassured. “I saw Uraraka on my way back from math class. She was smiling!”
“She was smiling, but everyone else isn’t,” Shoto said, pretty boy face drawn into a pretty boy pout. “In all my three years here I’ve never had a quiet meal unless it was after a huge battle. You could hear a pin drop during lunch and dinner.”
“Thanks for stepping up to fight against Midoriya in one v. ones today, Sho,” Ei said. “Last thing we need is Aizawa catching on to what happened.
“Tch. Fucking please. Teach already knows.” Katsuki crossed his arms over his chest squeezing himself to stave off the growing urge to knock every last one of them’s teeth in. “Wasn’t a coincidence that he and Aizawa came in to home room together, and it wasn’t a fucking coincidence that the nerd wasn’t asked a fucking question during any of our classes.”
“Shit.” Tetsu’s teeth worried at his bottom lip. “You think we’re gonna get detention or something?”
“I think Aizawa couldn’t give a rat’s ass so long as this bullshit doesn’t fuck with our studies.”
“And besides,” Shoji added, voice calm and measured. “Outside of the party stuff, if anyone were to be punished it’d be Bakugou.”
Katsuki straightened up, glaring daggers into Shoji’s eyes. “You wanna run that back?”
Shoji was unperturbed by his ire. “Operation Milo was your idea, wasn’t it? You wanted to do something to press the issue.” The unjudging, matter-of-fact way of speaking sent a chill down Katsuki’s spine. “Too much pressure too quickly causes things to break.”
Katsuki ground his teeth. “Then why didn’t you stop me?”
“Enough burns to the face have taught us all to leave well enough alone when you’ve set your mind to something.”
“Shoji, dude,” Ei admonished lightly, and placed a hand on Katsuki’s shoulder. “We all wanted to do something and your idea—”
Katsuki swatted his hand away. “Don’t try it, Shitty Hair. He’s gotta point.”
A heavy silence lingered as each beat of Katsuki’s heart threatened to cave his chest in.
“So what do we do now?” Shoto asked.
“Fucking nothing,” Katsuki scoffed. “We’ve already shit the bed. No use rolling around in it.”
“Or we could clean the sheets,” Hanta offered. “If Midoriya and Uraraka show everyone that there’s no bad blood between them—”
“But Chako is all smiles.” Tetsu interrupted. “Why would anyone—”
“Because she’s faking it,” Katsuki answered. “If things were good between her and the nerd they’d be talking to each other, eating lunch like usual, goofing around with Glasses… the girls only lunch they had today is proof enough that everything isn’t okay.”
“Well, you’re sparring with her after this, right?” Hanta asked, already knowing the answer. “Talk to her about Midoriya, see if you can—”
“I ain’t seeing shit. I already fucked her up enough.” Katsuki grabbed his gym bag and stood. “I ain’t playing mind games with her.”
“Where are you going?” Shoto asked.
“This conversation is going nowhere. We made this mess, meddling will only spread the shit. Let’s just fucking lie in it and let time work it out.”
He slammed the door behind him as he left, cutting off whatever bullshit excuse they were about to spew next.
Katsuki’s knees gave out just outside the gym, the guilt, the nerves, the self loathing finally getting the better of him. He managed to make it to a nearby tree and leaned his head back up against the trunk as he sat and tried to catch the breath that kept escaping him. Fuck sparring with Cheeks, his heart was racing enough to make up for all the cardio routines he skipped this weekend.
Would telling her make it better? Worse? How fragile was she? She hadn’t texted him this weekend while he was AWOL, so maybe she was holding up better than he realized. Or maybe someone let it slip that he masterminded this whole fiasco, that he Izuku was shopping around with Melissa and the sparring session was a ruse for her to kick his ass.
Honestly he deserved to have his ass kicked, deserved to let the earth swallow him whole and send him down to—
Two small, soft, finger-padded hands clasped the sides of his face, clearing the tears blurring his vision.
When had he started crying?
“Bakugou? Are you alright?” Ochako asked.
He sniffled, blinking his eyes to clear the tears. “Yeah.”
“Yeah?” She wiped a tear from his cheek with her thumb. “It’s okay if you aren’t.” A sad smile, a true smile curled her lips. “I know I’ve cried so much these past few days my pillow is waterlogged.”
A fresh spring of tears welled up in his eyes. “I’m sorry.”
She shook her head and tutted. “You don’t have to apologize for crying to me. We’ve been through a lot.” She stood and offered out her hand. “Let’s throw it all out on the mat, huh? I’m warning you now though. My hits are really gonna pack a punch.”
Bakugou x Ochaco fluff:) (Also jealous Mydoria cos who actually likes him🤨)
Context: Bakugou wants to ask Ochaco to be his valentine's, but she thinks his anonymous gifts are from Mydoria...
Valentine?
Tumblr media
Bakugou watched as the pink envelope fell through the slats of the silver locker. He stared at the metal for a moment, deciding if he should try and pick the lock and take back what it says. Shaking his head, be dismisses the idea, knowing that if he didn't tell her now he never would.
Adjusting his bag, he quickly walks to catch up with Kirishima and Kaminari, who were on their way back to the dorms.
"Did you do it? Is the cat in the bag?" Kaminari asked, elbowing him with a cheesy smirk.
"What? That's not how that expression- nevermind. Yeah, I put it in her locker," Bakugou answers, turning away from the two of them.
"Still don't understand why you didn't put your name on it," the red head says. Truthfully, he didn't know why either. The only reason he could think of was that he was worried that she didn't like him back, and that he wouldn't be embarrassed if she didn't know the letter was from him. But he wasn't gonna tell them that.
╔⏤⏤⏤╝❀╚⏤⏤⏤╗
"No there's no name on it," Ochaco tells Momo as they enter the dorm building. She flipped the paper over in her hands, looking for a clue as to who it was from.
Bakugou watched quietly from where he was sitting on the sofa, slightly regretting his decision.
"Do you recognise the handwriting?" the taller girl asks, looking over her shoulder. The writing was scruffy and illegible in some parts, wasn't one she recognised. She shook her head, folding it back up and sliding it back into the pink envelope. "Maybe it's from Mydoria," she teases.
Bakugou's brows furrow and his heart burns as he watches her cheeks redden. It was a mistake not putting his name on. No. It was a mistake even writing it in the first place.
"I don't think so," Ochaco managed to mumble. Her face was hot and flushed, but she didn't understand why. It's not like she liked Mydoria, in a romantic way anyway. She looked over at the couches, her eyes connecting with Bakugou's. He was frowning, as usual. The pair disappeared upstairs and Kirishima piped up.
"Told you you should have put your name on it. What if she does think it's from Mydoria and ends up going out with him instead?"
"Yeah I realise that dumbass," he says. Shaking his head, hoping he was wrong.
╔⏤⏤⏤╝❀╚⏤⏤⏤╗
"So you do have a secret admirer!" Mina squealed, rushing over to Ochaco's desk. Bakugou turned to watch as she picked up the bouquet of flowers he'd placed on the desk. It was an arrangement of pink, white, and lilac flowers, wrapped in tan paper.
His heart raced as Ochaco took the bouquet from her friend. He watched intensely as her hand brushed over the top of the flowers, her cheeks pinker than usual. A smile tugged at his lips, and for a second, he allowed. Just a second, though.
She stares at the flowers, ignoring the girls behind her debating who they could be from. Looking around, she noticed Mydoria staring at her blankly, blushing slightly. She turned away, feeling...upset? Maybe Momo was right and it was Mydoria giving her these things, she just didn't know how to tell him she didn't like him like that.
Bakugou watched as she looked over at Mydoria before turning away quickly, her cheeks even more flushed. He turned away, fixing his gaze to the window, trying to ignore the feeling in his gut telling him that she thought they were from Mydoria.
Maybe he was going to have to tell her. In person.
╔⏤⏤⏤╝❀╚⏤⏤⏤╗
Ochaco stopped, looking up from her phone. Sat at the bottom of her dorm room door was a stuffed bear. It was a classic brown bear with a cream ribbon tied in a bow around its neck. Attached to the bow by a red string was a brown card. Bending down, she picked up the bear, the faux fur soft on her skin, and read the card.
'KB'
It was the same handwriting from the love letter, only in gold pen. Entering her room, she sat on her bed, looking at the bear, trying to think about who 'KB' could be. It wasn't Mydoria that was for sure.
Racking her brain, she remembered how Bakugou was looking at her when she was discussing the letter with Momo, and how she caught a glimpse of him looking at her again in the classroom when she picked up the flowers. She swore he was smiling then, but she couldn't be too sure. Ochaco looked over at the class picture she had stuck up on her mirror, and how he was scowling, even though everyone else was so happy.
It couldn't be from him...could it?
╔⏤⏤⏤╝❀╚⏤⏤⏤╗
Bakugou closed the door behind him, pulling his phone out of his pocket. He didn't make it far down the hallway before his name was being called.
"Bakugou!" Ochaco called from behind him. His heart skipped a beat as he turned around to face her. She was holding a white box and had a cheesy smile on her face.
"They were from you, weren't they? The flowers and the bear?" she asks, stopping a few feet in front of him. He could see through the clear film on the top that the box was filled with cupcakes.
"What- oh um, yeah," he answered, trying to look anywhere but her as the heat rushed to his cheeks.
"Well, I got you these. Uh I don't know what flavour you like so I got one of each, uh...oh there's a Valentine's event happening at a park not too far from here if you wanted to go. Maybe, I dunno, I just-"
"Vanilla," Bakugou blurted out. His mind was going a thousand miles an hour, and all he managed to say was 'Vanilla'? He could have died right there. He almost did.
"Huh?"
"I prefer vanilla cupcakes," he says looking at them through the film again.
"Okay, well there's some vanilla so..yeah. Did you want to go to the park, I think they're setting up stalls and stuff ready for Saturday," she says, tilting her head to the side with another grin.
"Together?" Of course she meant together. He was losing his mind.
"Yeah," she laughed. He smiled, agreeing to the date, or at least he assumed it was a date.
╔⏤⏤⏤╝❀╚⏤⏤⏤╗
Bakugou looked up at the stall, at the giant teddy specifically. It was light pink with a white muzzle and stomach and had a dark purple bow.
"Didn't I already get you a bear?" He asked, turning to Ochaco. She nodded, swallowing the candy floss in her mouth.
"But this one's bigger...and pink," she said, turning away sheepishly. He whispered a 'fine' under his breath and paid the vendor; he wasn't even mad about it, he just found it funny to tease her.
Ochaco watched as he threw the balls with great precision, knocking all but one of the cams off. He had one ball left, which he managed to knock it off with, although she swore she saw him use his quirk a little. Putting the last of her candy floss in her mouth, she put the stick in the bin next to the stall, and reached her arms out.
"They rig these games, I swear," the blond says, giving her the bear. She squeezed it tightly before tucking it under her arm, to the best of her ability. It was practically the same size as her. He stuffed his hands in his pockets, Ochaco wrapping her arm around his as they continued to walk around the fair. A head of green hair caught Ochaco's attention.
"Deku!" she called, waving her arm in the air. Bakugou groaned as Mydoria and Iida walked over to the two of them. Ochaco shot him a quick scowl before turning back to the other two.
The blond watched as she showed off the bear that he won her, a smile appearing on his face as he watched him realise they were together. His brows furrow for a second. Angry? Jealous? Bakugou didn't care as long as he was upset.
"Oh well, you guys have to try these Monaka, they're so good," he says, holding up the flower shaped wafer dessert.
"We will," Ochaco replies, noticing that her date's patience was wearing thin.
"You two have fun then," Mydoria says.
"Whatever, nerd," Bakugou scoff, intertwining his fingers with hers, watching how his face scrunched up again.
"You don't have to be so mean you know," Ochaco states as they walk away. He shrugs, bending down slightly to kiss her cheek. She squeals and hides her face in the bear, whilst Bakugou laughs quietly, admiring her in the evening lighting.
Top Ten (Or So): Bakugou Fanfics
I’m a multipshipper–especially, for some reason, when it comes to Bakugou from My Hero Academia. I just love to see him put in such an awkward and completely-out-of-his-comfort-zone situation like Romance.
So without further ado, here are fanfiction recommendations arranged by Bakugou couple:
(Edit: I added a reading break, because this was a very long post to scroll through on my mobile.)
Bakugou/Iida: Breakneck Speed by chiropterology. This is the fic that made me make this list. Because I never, ever would have considered BakuIida as a ship if I hadn’t read this fic. I thought it would be cool to help others discover the delight of a previously unconsidered ship, and decided to make this list. The story is unfinished, and looks like it never will be finished (the author hasn’t been active at all in more than two years), but for me it was worth it for how hilarious and awesome it was.
Bakugou/Momo: My favourite fic with these two isn’t romantic at all, but still has great interactions between the two of them. I’m not gonna write the whole fic name because it’s extremely long, but it’s You know that thing where an orchestra swaps instruments…? by Sif.
There’s not that many great fics that are romantic out there for this pairing, and the one I like best I actually put in the Poly section below (“Love like a common cold”). But Leaf Water by smol_bird is a sweet little one-shot for these two, and I liked it quite a lot.
Bakugou/Ochako: I used to be into this ship a lot, but not so much anymore. It makes it difficult to recommend fics properly, because I don’t reread them anymore. That said, there is one Kacchako fic I still read whenever it updates, and that’s Seeing Double by knifekirby. This is one of the best (*the* best?) fantasy AU I’ve read (but mixed with the original MHA world! And yes, at one point you get two Bakugous at once). The world building is fantastic, barbarian Bakugou is epic, and the dragons are so awesome. It’s unfinished, but updates keep coming after long breaks, so there’s lots of hope.
A runner up could be A Different Perspective by House_of_Pixels. I quite like mind-sharing and soul-bond type fics, and this is a really cool one of that genre.
Bakugou/Deku: I have the opposite problem as with Ochako here. I’m a big bakudeku shipper, and I’ve read so many and have so many favourites depending on my mood that it’s hard to pick only a couple to recommend. But still, if I had to pick one, I think I’d go with (may the bridges i have burned) light my way back home by Chrome. It’s slow burn (my favourite), and the romance is subtle and difficult. Quite beautiful, in my opinion. It’s unfinished, and I had thought it was going to remain so forever, but it recently updated after a long, long break this year, so there’s hope!
For a one-shot (and thus finished) fic, try Do Not Disturb by surveycorpsjean. I’m a manga reader, and there have been so many developments between Bakugou and Midoriya recently, but the fics haven’t caught up. This story takes place after Ch. 322, and Katsuki is SO in character–caring for Izuku in the way he does in recent manga chapters, while still retaining all his amazing strength and gruffness.
And finally, a runner up: for a long and finished fic that I don’t think is getting nearly enough love, try zero-sum game by roadtripwithlucifer. It’s dark and angsty and adult and there’s lots of sex (one of the tags is “Sex as a Coping Mechanism”), but it’s fantastically written, and man do you get all the feels with this one.
Bakugou/Todoroki: I tend not to seek out todobaku, but will enjoy it if it’s in the bookmarks or works of an author I really like. So I’m not aware of the full breadth of options for this pairing, but there are a few I’ve found that I really enjoy. cruel to be kind by shaekspeares would be the first one I’d recommend. It’s a very long, slow-burn one-shot, and the first section is devoted to Bakugou struggling with PTSD (something I personally really like reading fics about) and has almost no Todoroki at all (an indication of its slow-burn, and a point in its favour for me).
Another would be and even the cake is in tiers by supercrunch, which I also mention in the poly section below. It has multiple endings, one of which is todobaku, and it’s one of the funniest fics on this list.
And finally, as a runner up, I have to recommend A Real Fucking Problem by Ellessey. It has, um… a LOT of masturbation, lol. I read fanfiction more for the romance than the sex (not through lack of horniness, but lack of interest in written word to deal with horniness). But this fic has such good characterization for Bakugou, and is so, so funny, that I don’t even mind the mammoth amounts of sexual content.
Bakugou/Froppy: All the Same Broken Parts by Seeress. There’s not many fics for this ship–it’s quite a rarepair. But I happened on this one, and I'm very glad. It’s so sad (though happy in the end), but I found it quite lovely and excellently written.
Bakugou/Camie: The Freaky Friday sitch! by orphan_account. Like with Momo, my favourite fic with these two isn’t romantic, but it’s hilarious, and these two are a fantastic duo. Bodyswapped Camie in Bakugou’s body is just *chef’s kiss*.
For a runner up that is romantic, you could try our friendship goes beyond your average kind of bond (but not because we’re gay) by wonhaebunny. I could actually see it happening something like this in canon, plus there’s a lovely bit of Bakugou & Kirishima friendship on the side.
Bakugou/Kaminari: My favourite BakuKami is actually in a bakudeku fic, Permanent Ink by Maxime. Fortunately, the little bit of BakuKami in that fic was so delightful, that they wrote another pure BakuKami fic, Tango for Two, Electric Boogaloo.
Bakugou/Shinsou: letting it linger by Ramabear. Nosy classmates, early-morning Shinsou staring, demi-sexual Bakugou (my favourite kind of Bakugou). It’s super cute and I really enjoyed it.
Polyamorous: Love like a common cold by supercrunch. My two favourite Bakugou ships, BakuDeku and BakuMomo, with a side splash of Todoroki. It’s a fantastic and very funny bodyswapping fic that you should definitely try out. The same author also wrote and even the cake is in tiers, which has an ending with todobakudeku, and is hilarious.
Gen: I’m always on the lookout for good Gen Bakugou fics, but I find it surprisingly hard to find ones I like. Here’s a couple I really loved:
A Little Demonstration by AnonymousTwit. Bakugou’s epic fights are one of my favourite parts of his character, and this gets at that glorious feeling exactly. It’s like the Joint Training Arc, but *more epic*.
Social Media: 101 by WindsChild8178. If you’re ok with Mistuki being abusive and a whole lot of angst and PTSD for Bakugou, then you really should try this fic. WindsChild is a fantastic writer, and this is one of the few fics that I remember vividly no matter how far between updates. It’s unfinished, but WindsChild puts a lot of work into each chapter, so it tends to be a long time between updates. I still have lots of hope it will be finished.
Note on Bakugou/Jirou: I love this ship, it’s probably in my top 3 Bakugou ships, but I haven’t yet found any fics that really, really stand out–enough to put them on this list, at least. Feel free to recommend one!
Note on Bakugou/Kirishima: My shipping is a mystery even to me, and it always has been. Why do I not like KiriBaku when I like almost every other Bakugou ship under the sun? I have no frickin clue. I have no rational reasons against it–it’s cute and sweet and there’s more canon moments with them than almost anyone else besides Deku. I do not blame anyone for liking this couple, I just happen not to myself, so I have no recs. If you really like kiribaku, feel free to reply with some recs of your own. :)
Memories & Magic
Tumblr media
Katsuki drags his boots through the dirt, kicking up a small cloud of dust as he walks. He sneaks a glance at his bride-to-be before turning his attention back to the road in front of them. The last time he had seen Ochako, they were five and she was scared, hiding behind her father’s pant leg – a comfort Katsuki was never afforded.
As had been expected of him, he’d stood stoic between his parents, even if his lip quivered, and listened to them talk about how he would become their kingdom’s greatest warrior. How he would travel and train and fight with only the kingdom’s best until he could beat them. He would test his mettle on the battlefield while Ochako would be sent to the safety of the temple. And if Katsuki survived, proving himself a worthy heir to the kingdom, the two of them would be wed when he came of age.
When all the terms had been accepted by the respective patriarchs, Katsuki and Ochako had been shoved together. Katsuki had presented her with a flower he’d plucked from his mother’s garden and Ochako had given him a small lock of her hair. Their families feasted that night, the two families promising to unite as one and, in the morning, Katsuki and Ochako had both been sent off their separate ways.
Now, nearly twelve years later they’ve been reunited and, in some ways, Katsuki still feels like that lost little boy he’d been, unprepared and unsure of how to talk to her. He’d grown up tall and muscular, body honored with the scars of his battles. And Ochako…
Ochako had grown up pretty – more than pretty, if he’s being honest with himself. Her soft brown hair frames her face, and when she smiles her whole face lights up. She’d been peppering him with questions since they’d left the village, asking about how he’d grown up, who his friends were, and about the battles he’d fought in. It had been overwhelming to say the least.
When he glances at Ochako again, he finds her watching him, and he quickly turns his gaze back towards the path ahead of them. “We’ll stop to rest at the top of the hill for the night.”
Katsuki doesn’t wait for a reply before trotting forward to scout ahead. Behind them lay damaged farmhouses. Buildings that once stood proud now bear smashed roofs and crumbling walls. Their path was lined by shattered trees and torn up earth. Logs lay splintered in fields as if they’d fallen from the sky. It was a constant reminder for Katsuki that this is no normal pilgrimage to the mountain temple. There will be no wedding procession back home if they can’t find and slay the two giants wreaking havoc on the nearby villages under his protection.
He had listened to the stories the people told. How the giants had come in the dead of night. How they’d all been asleep in their beds when their roofs were caved in. The ones lucky enough to escape had told the elders how, once they were done, the giants had stalked off northward.
Here, though, is nothing more than fields of golden wheat and the long trail ahead of them. He’d almost doubt their path if he’d not been trained to look for the signs: claw marks in the earth and random tufts of hair caught in the bark of tall trees. Katsuki closes his eyes to the warm sun above and silently says a prayer for safety and success.
“It’s so beautiful here.” Ochako’s voice is soft, and when Katsuki opens his eyes, he finds her smiling up at him with an apple in her palm. When he doesn’t respond, she pushes her hands out farther, urging him to take her offering. “You haven’t eaten anything since we’ve left.”
Part of him knows that the elders wouldn’t have sent her along if they didn’t think she could hold her own, but he can’t help but remember that frightened child from all those years ago. The one who had run from him when he’d offered her a piece of fruit. Would she run from the danger now? Would this delicate-looking, beautiful woman be the thing that finally gets him killed?
Katsuki begrudgingly takes the apple and grumbles out a small thank you before pointing her towards a fallen log on the side of the road. “Sit. Don’t wander off.”
Whether she listens to him or not is of no concern to him as he busies himself gathering firewood. Their first night together will be under stars and wilderness. She is his responsibility, and he has to prove himself worthy of her. Even though he worries the fire will draw unwanted attention, he can’t very well let her shiver in the cold. As he works, he imagines her sitting there on that log with her hands clasped in her lap, her delicate, silky dress wafting in the small breeze while she looks up at the clouds in the sky. He thinks about her round, brown eyes and the curve of her face, and smiles without knowing it.
The temple priestesses he’d met before had all been trained to be quiet and accommodating and surely, if Ochako was destined to be Katsuki’s bride, they would have trained her to be some tame, mousy little thing who couldn’t think for herself. Katsuki tries to force that sinking feeling in his heart down as he finishes gathering wood and trudges back.
His face falls into a deep scowl as he continues to contemplate their possible future together. She would probably have a warm hearth and dinner ready for him every evening when he got home, and she would look up at him for guidance on anything that didn’t involve a garden or a pot. She would be the perfect, boring wife the men he’d trained with always told him she would be. Maybe she was the ideal bride for men like them. Maybe he should be perfectly happy with her like that…
Katsuki stops at the edge of the forest to find their blankets laid out and a small, well-built fire not far from where he’d instructed Ochako to sit down. She looks up at him with a bright smile on her face before turning her attention back to the fire and laying on a bit more kindling.
He doesn’t say anything as he sets the wood down, just watches her grab a piece and carefully layer it into the hottest part of the fire. He’s tempted to ask her how she’d started it, but it’s been a long walk so, instead, he just takes the pack off his back and begins rummaging through it. When he finds his water skin, he takes a long swig and then hands it to her.
Ochako runs her fingers over the soft hide of the waterskin before taking a small sip and handing it back to him. She fills the awkward silence by talking. She talks about the small village they’d passed on their way here and the devastation she’d seen beyond the hill. She tries to ask him questions and Katsuki knows that he should be indulging her; she’s his bride-to-be, after all.
“You don’t like me much, do you?”
Her question catches him off guard. He can feel the back of his neck growing warm at the accusation, but instead of allowing it to show, Katsuki just glares at her before finally relenting. “They shouldn’t have sent you with me.”
Even in the dim light of the setting sun, he can see the way her cheeks flush before she turns her head away from him. She pretends to rifle through her own bag and for a moment he feels bad; after all, she hadn’t asked to come.
Katsuki lets out a long sigh before laying down on the small blanket Ochako had laid out for him. He looks up at the stars and reminds himself that this is probably just as hard for her as it is for him. “Look, I just–”
“It’s okay. I get it.” Ochako gathers her dress near her knees and walks to the other side of the fire where she’d laid her own blanket. “You don’t have to explain.”
Crimson eyes watch as she settles down with her back to him. Katsuki knows that he should say something. Make peace before bed or you’ll make war in the morning. His father had always told him that when he was arguing with his mother. They were the two fiery blonds of the Bakugou household and Masaru was always their peacekeeper.
Katsuki shakes himself out of old memories and focuses on what he should tell her. He wasn’t wrong. The elders should have let him take a seasoned warrior with him like Eijirou or let him come by himself. He shouldn’t have to worry about–
“I’m not helpless, you know.” Ochako’s voice floats across the fire to him but, still, he doesn’t take his gaze from the stars above him. “I’ve been taught in the ways of magic and–”
Katsuki snickers softly under his breath and instantly regrets it. He doesn’t even have to look over to know that he’s offended her. He can hear the quiet, angry intake of breath as she shifts, most likely putting her back to him once again. The temple priestesses have always claimed to have magic, and maybe they were exceptional at healing, but he’s never seen their magic before. He knows that it’s probably nothing more than herbs and the use of suggestion – if you believe it will make you feel better, then it will make you feel better.
He huffs softly, scolding himself silently and reminding himself that he’d promised to give her a chance. In the silence of the night, with the warmth of the fire on his side, he can feel how exhausted he is. They’d walked far and he can fix this tomorrow. Somehow. He thinks about waking before the sun to find her flowers and maybe catching a rabbit for breakfast before they continue on. He wonders if she’d find that insulting.
Katsuki drifts off to sleep, thinking about how best to apologize to Ochako. His sleep is heavy and dreamless and when he wakes, the sun is just coming over the horizon. He stands quietly and stretches, careful not to wake Ochako as he does and then takes off into the forest.
As he hunts for breakfast and searches for flowers, he practices his apology in his head over and over. He’s lost, deep in his own thoughts when a loud crack sounds off to his left. It’s followed by heavy thudding that Katsuki knows must be the footsteps of one of the giants. He drops the flowers he’s holding and ducks behind the nearest tree.
When he steps out his bow is at the ready. His thoughts are on Ochako, on getting back to their camp before anything can happen to her. He wants to run, to get to her as quickly as possible, but his mentor’s voice rings in the back of his mind. Rushing only frightens the deer into running… No, Katsuki can’t run.
He forces himself to step quietly through the brush, taking care to call as little attention to himself as possible. He adjusts his course back, keeping the loud crashing noises as far to his left as he dares. He’s making steady, slow progress until one sounds from ahead of him – from near the campsite. Katsuki ignores his training and runs on instinct, desperate to get back to the camp and protect his bride-to-be at all costs.
When Katsuki arrives back at the road, he finds the embers of the fire still warm and smoldering and Ochako gone. He can hear his blood rushing in his ears as he turns in circles, checking the nearby tree lines and the sandy ground around the camp for footprints and finding none. Where is she? His chest feels tight and his breath is coming in short, shallow huffs as he thinks about what could have happened to her. He’s nearly certain that they’d already been here and he’d been following their retreat and–
CRACK!!
He looks up just in time to see a large log crashing into several others. When he turns to find the source, he sees one of the giants. It stands nearly twenty meters tall. Its skin is mottled and brown, reminding Katsuki of oats cooked with too little water. It stands there, unmoving, as if it’s watching him – as if it’s waiting for something.
Katsuki turns, expecting another giant to come out behind him, but all that he sees is the mess of mangled trees and the large log laying splintered at the edge of the forest where it had come to rest. Katsuki faces the giant, bow raised, but the dull thing just grins at him like it has the upper hand.
He can feel something tickling in the back of his mind while he stares at the massive creature. He glances back once more to the shattered trees. That sound here… Katsuki’s heart falls when it finally dawns on him – he’d been following that sound. They had tricked him. Mislead him… As realization begins to creep further into his conscious thought, Katsuki glances behind him and finds the second giant crawling slowly out of the forest he’d just come from. They herded me…
The giant in the road roars and charges at him. Katsuki quickly raises his bow and looses an arrow at the one closest to him before sprinting across the road. It howls, clutching at its face, but he doesn’t stop to see if he’d hit his intended mark. He knows that he needs to make it to the safety of the trees. He’ll have the advantage there. He can lose them there and focus his attention on finding Ochako.
He’s nearly there when his path is suddenly blocked by a large hand slamming down. The impact shakes the trees nearest him and makes the ground beneath his feet tremble. Katsuki veers right, darting between the creature’s legs and drawing his dagger. He slashes at the giant’s ankle. It shrieks in pain, shaking the ground and knocking over several trees as it falls.
He’s almost reached the forest when one of them swipes at him. The large, clawed hand smashes into his back and sends him flying. Katsuki crashes to the ground, rolling several times and losing his bow in the process before coming to a stop not far from one of the tree lines he’d been trying so desperately to reach only moments ago.
Katsuki lays there, stunned and in pain, knowing that he should move and yet unable to make his body obey. He watches as they struggle to their feet, one clutching at its bloody ankle and other yanking Katsuki’s arrow out of his face. A low growl rumbles, and then the giants charge at him. His bow is on the ground a few feet away. His quiver lies shattered and empty not far from his feet.
Every part of him hurts, but he forces his body to move. He gets to his feet, and the world around him spins. He only manages a few steps before stumbling and falling down onto his knees. Unable to run, Katsuki braces himself. He’s as ready to fight back as he can be when a bright flash of orange light comes from behind him.
He shields his face from the sudden rush of heat and wind. He can hear the giants shrieking and when Katsuki blinks into that blinding light, he finds the giant looming over him turning to dust. Ochako is standing at his side with her arms raised. Bright, magical flames are licking through the sky, swirling the dust high into the air.
She’s chanting, arms trembling as if she’s struggling to contain the power she’s wielding. Her eyes are determined, never wavering from the giant still standing even as the dirt flies in her face. It falls to its knees before her, cracking and crumbling like the other had done.
Katsuki watches her in awe. The same shy child who’d hidden behind her mother’s dress all those years ago now stands victorious where he, himself, had failed. Only once both giants are turned to dust does she turn to him and help him to his feet.
The arm around his waist is strong; the fingers under the hem of his shirt, soft. She leads him back to their camp, letting him walk as slowly as he needs to and pausing when the pain in his ribs becomes too much to continue.
Katsuki can feel a thought tugging at the back of his mind and the next time they stop to rest, he looks around at the piles that were once giants and then back towards their little camp. “They set a trap for me.”
Ochako gives a small, noncommittal hum and tugs him forward. She gets him set down near the fire and adds wood to it, stoking it high and hot and then rifles through her bag. She hands him a few pieces of salted deer and a small vial of medicine, and then begins bandaging his ribs.
She works diligently, mindful of his pain and pausing when he winces. She waits for him to nod before continuing. Katsuki thinks about how kind she must be – to be so gentle with him after he’d been so rude to her.
He drinks down the medicine she’d given him and lays back on his fur. Even though his eyes are heavy, he watches her as she moves about – pulling the small skillet from her pack, going to the edge of the forest to retrieve the satchel she’d filled with wild roots and vegetables, and then setting to work peeling and slicing and cooking.
Though he knows the danger is gone, he still surveys the road and that thought begins to tug at him again. Ochako hadn’t been at the campsite when the giants had shown up. She hadn’t walked into their trap like he had. Logic dictates that she should have come out of the forest opposite him, but she had to have come from further south which means…
“You used me as bait.”
Ochako doesn’t look up from the vegetables she’s chopping, but her cheeks blush pink. “I didn’t expect you to fall into their trap so easily. I would have been closer if I had.”
Katsuki chuckles softly and then winces at the way it makes his ribs ache. “How’d you know it was a trap?”
“You had just left the camp. I wanted to help with breakfast, so I’d gone off to gather some mushrooms and herbs to go with whatever you were hunting.” Ochako is quiet for a moment, tending to the food in front of her and Katsuki lets his head fall back onto the fur and rests his eyes. “When I heard the first crash, I hid. When the second one came from the same direction, I started to follow the sound. Then, I remembered you telling me about those poor villagers – how they’d only been woken up by their roofs caving in.”
Katsuki lets out a low, frustrated groan at having fallen for such a simple lure. If he hadn’t lost his head so quickly, he wouldn’t be injured now. Of course, then he might not have realized exactly how capable Ochako was at holding her own. Watching her now, he can see her strength and intelligence. He feels foolish for having judged her so quickly.
“I’m sorry for what I said…” Katsuki’s mind starts to swim, his thoughts beginning to repeat and fade as he struggles to hold onto them. He thinks to himself that it must be some combination of the medicine she’d given him and his own natural exhaustion and almost completely forgets that he was in the middle of apologizing to her. “… Cheeks. I shouldn’t have… uhm… I mean, when I look at you, I still see that little girl hiding behind her mother’s dress and–”
Katsuki’s words cut off as a coughing fit takes hold of him. Ochako rushes to his side, putting the waterskin to his lips and helping him take a few small sips until he has himself under control. He reaches up, brushing his thumb along her jaw and watching as her cheeks blush that beautiful shade of pink again. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright. I think we both have a lot to learn about each other. I suppose it’s good that we still have a whole journey ahead of us to do so.” Ochako leans down, placing a chaste kiss on Katsuki’s lips and smiling at the way his cheeks flush. “Rest for now. I’ll wake you when breakfast is ready.”
