Kai - Blue
When it comes to songs in a language I don't understand, I am attracted first to the melody. Kai's "Blue" from his sophomore mini album Peaches was something that I immediately gravitated to just because of that. I loved "To Be Honest" for its groovy, danceable beat, but I felt that "Blue" had a deeper meaning than I thought. This was particularly based on the English phrases used in the song.
Thankfully, Genius had a full English translation of the song, and boy, I knew there was a reason why I felt what I did for "Blue."
The first verse goes:
I don't even know what I want now
Am I lonely or do I just want to be lonely?
I see my absent-minded reflection in the mirror
The 'me' I knew is stopped here
Little by little, everything is becoming cloudy
Yeah, I'm lonely
Yeah, I'm lonely
I remember feeling left out of things, as I was living in a town far from where I grew up and worked, and was missing friend meetups, events, and the like.
Two years later, I don't think the feeling has gone away, and this song still strikes a chord in me.
To uplift my feelings, I play D.O.'s "That's OK," EXO's "Paradise" or more recently, "Another Day" from EXO's newest studio album.
Anyway, just ramblings.

VANILLA by KAI
Hot, sweet, unique and addicting—that's how he described the song himself. With a creamy and soft sound, just like vanilla that melts in the mouth, Kai's vocals delicately caress our ears on the track 'Vanilla' of his second studio album 'Peaches'.
To me, this is quite an experimental song. The percussion arrangements do an excellent job transporting us to a dreamy atmosphere with soothing sounds that resemble the calmness of water—the production and this characteristic sound reminding me of one of my favorite albums: Swimming by Mac Miller.
It is also a love song. I have this mental image of seeing and hearing Kai talking about the production of Vanilla (although I can't seem to find the video now,) and how when he told his friends about the song and word game he had planned no one thought that would actually sound good. Vanilla may have been one of the songs on the album that they had the least faith in, but Kai believed in it. The work he did with his voice not only demonstrates his impressive progress as a vocalist, but also his creativity in playing with the pronunciation of words—his intention is clear and can be seen from the beginning of the song: 'vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, I'm in love, I'm in love'. He makes it sound like he's saying the same thing. This pronunciation game was one of the things that stuck in my memory the most after hearing the track for the first time.
Thanks to his incredible vocals, the top tier production and the charming atmosphere created by the auditory elements Vanilla ended up being, definitely, one of the most impressive works on the album and in Kai's entire discography I dare say. For this reason (and maybe because he also really likes this song,) it was probably selected to be promoted and to make sense of his second album through the visual work 'Peaches Prologue Film'. With this performance, Kai reaffirms himself as an all-rounded artist.
Kai's Vanilla made it to my list of favorite songs of all time.
