2024 Spring Anime

Kaiju No. 8 This series started the same time as SpyxFamily and I've been waiting years for it to be animated. It's a series I was instantly hooked on. The animations in the teasers were incredibly sus but I'm glad to see it's pulled together. This is a must watch for this season. Noteworthy On-going Shows: Delicious in Dungeon - Episodes 13-24 A Character based comedic fantasy that honestly has me hooked. New Seasons:

Demon Slayer - Hashira Training Arc I can't believe we're already here. I think this will be one of the last 2 or 3 seasons of the show. This is one I'm not sure what to expect in terms of story but I'm looking forward to it regardless.

That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime - Season 3 One of the Og's is back baby. This is one of my all time favourite shows, one of the original fantasy/isekai series. This series gets better and better and I'm so hooked to each character. 100% biased opinion but if you haven't seen this, go check it out.

My Hero Academia - Season 7 This is one that I haven't caught up on the anime for so I'm not 100% where we are but I'm pretty sure it's about to get real dark. I think lots of people have put this show on the backburner or have dropped it entirely. But I really have to say we're starting to head into some of the peak of the series. It gets much darker and more serious and starts to shift from the original shonen high school style.

Additional New Seasons: Mushoku Tensei - Season 2 Cour 2 I won't lie, this arc honestly doesn't look very appealing to me. That said, I have faith in the writers and will be watching and updating if it picks up. Both of these shows from 2008 coming back were not on my bucket list but here we are: Spice and Wolf - Looks to be a re-make of the original series Black Butler - Public School Arc - New continuation of the og series Also: The Misfit of Demon King Academy II - Part 2 The Irregular at Magic High School - Season 3 Laid-Back Camp - Season 3 New Noteworthy Shows:

Wind Breaker A new series about a delinquent who moves to a school where it's all about being the strongest and beating each other up. Honestly it reminds me a little of Food wars but if it was actually about fighting instead of food lol. The animations look stellar, I'm actually pretty excited to check this one out. ( I'd also say it looks completely different to Tokyo Revengers so I wouldn't compare the two.)

Mission:Yozakura Family A newer shonen jump series about a kid who tries to integrate with a mismatched family of spies. Looks like a lot of fun and has a similar vibe to some old school SJ series.

Go! Go! Loser Ranger Why does this look so good. This series genuinely looks so cool, the animation look out of this world and the story looks killer. From what I can gather it's a guy who always plays the villain and is sick of his role. The story shows the heroes as villains and gives me a bit of Invincible vibes. (This is a Disney+ exclusive) The Fable I've heard that this is one of the most legendary comedies. I know there's a few live actions for it on Netflix but I haven't had a chance to check it out. I feel like the trailers don't seem to get anything across so this'll be one I'll follow up on.

Going through the extra shows is now the bane of my existence. I want to go back to before all the isekai light novels were being animated. After doing this I feel defeated that some of these look half-decent. Whisper Me a Love Song Wholesome girl's love series about figuring out what kind of love they feel for each other: 3 Episodes The Many Sides of Voice Actor Radio 2 girls who's offline personalities are total opposites, their rivalry in a brutal industry. Looks like it could be a fun slice of life series: 3 Episodes Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night Looks like a really well done series about a group of girls forming an anonymous idol group: 3 Episodes

I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability The animations actually look amazing from the trailer and this series could be cute: 1 Episode An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride I think this might be a guilty pleasure show. I like the idea of the awkward romance between these two. Likely wouldn't reccommend this for a normal watcher: 1 Episode Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again Animations and concept look fun: 1 Episode Notable OVA's: Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture A prequel to the original series. The animation looks just like the OG and I'm so stoked that this is coming out.

here's the stuff I'm watching Spring 2024!

Dungeon Meshi cour 2: It's Dungeon Meshi cour 2.

Train to the End of the World: I mean..... with that premise, how can I NOT watch it. The 4 main characters are so compelling and fun to watch bounce off of each other. do yourselves a favor and at least watch episode 1 for the What factor alone

Sentai Daishikkaku: First half of episode 1 was a bit of a slog but once they dropped the extremely obvious act, I found the characters to be intriguing and the premise hooked me. Episode 2 I liked even better. hopefully this is going places

Wind Breaker: mostly just following this one for the sound design and the animation. hoping the characters/premise grow on me

Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night: <- i don't think thats true. I don't think jellyfish care what time of day it is. Anyways the fanservice in episode 1 really icked me out but everything else was pretty top notch so im covering my eyes and praying that no more fanservice like that happens

Kaiju No. 8: I was disappointed that the premise does not seem to center the kaiju cleanup crew which was more fascinating to me than the actual kaiju fighters. But the music was really ambitious and unique in a way that grew on me so I'll keep watching

Whisper Me a Love Song: I am not immune to corny boring yuri.

One of these years, the spring anime season will not be unfathomably stacked. But 2024 is not that year.

MUST-WATCH

Hibike Euphonium Season 3: And so... our last piece begins.

Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night: An explosion of creativity and joy. The original anime we needed after last season's flops.

Kaiju No. 8: The single most kickass premiere of the season. Production IG does it again, lads.

Tonari no Youkai-san: So here's a show that wasn't on my radar until the first episode walloped me with how good it was. We may have a new ugly-cry masterpiece on our hands here.

RUNNERS UP

Girls Band Cry: The fact this hasn't been officially licensed yet is my roman empire. It's the Love Live Sunshine writer and director on a genuinely fantastic-looking CGI anime, give them respect, god dammit!

Go Go Loser Ranger: Super impressed by the concept and execution alike. Call this one a dark horse for most likely to snatch Anime of the Season when everyone least expects it.

Train to the End of the World: Somehow, this is the most coherent LSD trip I've taken. Not that I've... actually... taken one. Ahem.

Whisper Me a Love Song: Oh thank Christ the adaptation is nowhere near as bad as I was afraid it would be

Wind Breaker: A show that dares to ask the question: what is Tokyo Revengers was... good?

WORTH A LOOK

Bartender: Glass of God: Kinda boring, but also explores some interesting ideas with its focus on bars and bartending. I'll stick with it a little longer at least.

Konosuba Season 3: Somehow these losers keep being just funny enough to keep me watching.

Spice and Wolf: This is probably not gonna live up to the original, but still nice to be reminded of how good this story is.

Yuru Camp Season 3: Oh god what did they do to the character designs

ON THIN ICE

Blue Archive: Not gonna lie, solely watching this for the waifus. We'll see how long that keeps me.

A Condition Called Love: So I maaaaaay have been a bit too harsh on A Sign of Affection last season.

The Many Sides of Voice Actor Radio: Well... at least the Whisper Me adaptation is pretty decent, right?

What to expect from spring 2024?

Let's talk about anime. Last spring was an intense one for anime fans, but what can we expect this year?

TV shows

First, we will discuss the new titles, and then we will briefly mention the new seasons of the old ones.

Kaiju No.8

Action, adventure, Sci-Fi

The new title of Production I.G studio ("Haikyuu!!", "Moriarty the Patriot", "Vinland Saga" and a bunch of other great titles)

Giant monsters are attacking Japan (where else could this happen). The defense forces kill these kaiju, but the main character, Kafka Hibino, is not one of them. He has another job, he is a cleaner, he cleans up kaiju corpses after battles. However, very soon he gets a chance to realize his childhood dream and join the defense forces, but unexpectedly begins to turn into a kaiju.

I expect at least an average title from this studio, so I will wait.

Gods' Game We Play (Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru.)

Comedy, Drama, Ecchi, Fantasy, Romance

The anime studio LIDENFILMS (Tokyo Revengers, Insomnia After School, Call of the Night) is an adaptation of a light novel.

The gods had too much free time and instead of finding a job, they created an intellectual game to test mortals. They did not think about the name for a long time - "Game of Gods". An ex-goddess is looking for a true gaming pro to challenge the supreme Gods.

Go, go, Loser Ranger! (Sentai Daishikaku)

Action, fantasy, shounen

The new title of the little-known Yostar Pictures studio. The original source is the manga.

Earth was being attacked by aliens, so the humans assembled a squad of Power Rangers to stop them. After an attack on the decision-making centers, the top aliens were destroyed and the humans made a deal with the others. Aliens are allowed to live, and they have to pretend every Sunday that they are attacking Earth. And so, every week for thirteen years, the aliens invent a "monster of the week", and people kill it. But this show did not suit everyone. During the 999th battle, one of the aliens decides to attack for real, but fails. Then this alien comes up with a brilliant plan. Using his cosmic ability, he transforms into one of the Rangers and infiltrates the organization to destroy it from within.

Haruka Sakura is a sigma-male, so he doesn't want anything to do with weaklings. He enters a school for hooligans, known for the fact that everyone fights there just for fun, because he wants to become a local authority. However, it turns out that the students of this school are not just hooligans, they help and protect the residents of the city.

An ordinary Japanese office worker (who else could it be?) was reborn. Of the skills, he was given only the appraisal skill, in magic and swordsmanship he is a complete 0. Another isekai.

Whisper Me a Love Song (Sasayaku You ni Koi wo Utau)

Drama, music, romance

The title is about girls, love and music.

Taio Asano lost his entire family in a car accident and became a sigma. However, he has a childhood friend, Mutsumi Yozakura, whom he of course falls in love with. There is only one problem, Yozakura is a family of spies and Mutsumi's brother wants to kill Tayo. The main character joins the Yozakura family, becomes a spy and gets a life, and we get a family spy comedy.

I'm really looking forward to the release, because it's an anime based on the manga by Inio Asano (the author of "Goodnight PunPun"), although I don't know how they'll fit everything into movie, so I'm a little afraid of being disappointed.

The alien threat loomed over Japan (they could get used to it). The characters are high school girls who live life in the conditions of the end of the world. They grow up and begin to understand that real demons do not come from other planets.

I highly recommend it to everyone who liked PunPun.

Kurayukaba and Kuramerukagari

Kurayukaba and spin-off Kuramerukagari are original feature-length anime films.

Kurayukaba is a mystery film - with a romantic atmosphere of the Taisho era and powerful gadgets - about a detective Sutarou who solves a mass disappearance and steps into the underground world known as Kuragali.

Kuramerukagari is a story that unites people and the city. A coal mining town full of small excavators, it is widely known as "Hakoniva". In this city, which changes every day like a maze, there is a girl named Kagari who runs a mapping business and a boy named Yuya who dreams of escaping Hakoniva. Later, these two, along with the unique inhabitants of the city, face a conspiracy that shakes the whole city. The fate of "Hakoniva" depends on Kagari's drawings on the map.

Grotesque, Godzilla-like monsters called "kaijuu" have been appearing around Japan for many years. To combat these beasts, an elite military unit known as the Defense Corps risks their lives daily to protect civilians. Once a creature is killed, "sweepers"—working under the Professional Kaijuu Cleaner Corporation—are left to dispose of its remains.

Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man, is unsatisfied with his job as a sweeper. From a young age, he has aspired to join the Defense Corps and kill kaijuus for a living. After a few failed attempts, however, he gave up on his dreams and resigned himself to the mediocrity that provided a decent paycheck. Nevertheless, when an ambitious, 18-year-old recruit named Leno Ichikawa joins his cleaning team, Kafka is once again reminded of his desire to join the military.

Let me just list some of the sequels from returning anime (or continuing from the winter: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (season 3), Mushoku Tensei (season 2 part 2), Demon Slayer (Hashira Training arc), Konosuba (season 3), Urusei Yatsura (season 2) The Duke of Death and His Maid, My Hero Academia (season 7), Tsukimichi (season 2 continued), and two that our staff are particularly looking forward to—season three of both Sound! Euphonium and Laid-back Camp.

That’s not to say that there aren’t a plethora of new series as well, many of them based on manga or light novels we’ve reviewed, some very highly like Unnamed Memory, A Condition Called Love Gods’ Games We Play, Mission Yozakura Family, and possibly the most highly anticipated new series of the spring, Kaiju No. 8. The assumption (perhaps better termed “hope”) is that these adaptations will do justice to their source material. But for others, we’re going in blind. Wild cards like WIND BREAKER, Re:Monster, Mysterious Disappearances, A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics, Jelly Fish Can’t Swim in the Night, and Train to the End of the World—some of which are originals—are sure to surprise us, hopefully in a good way!

Other shows we’re looking forward to are long-dead productions made alive again as part of the recent trend to resurrect classics, including Black Butler -Public School Arc- and Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf, which has already gotten chatter on our social media timelines. There are also other assorted series premiering, like Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again, yuri series Whisper Me a Love Song, The Many Sides of Voice Actor Radio, and so much more!
