I’ve been watching a lot of videos on the NieR games over the past days and got reminded how much I love them, so I felt like drawing Kainé again.

There is a lot of valid criticism to be had with the way Nier: Replicant treats Kainé being intersex, but i do think despite that I come away from the game extremley compelled by a lot of it.
I don't know, there is just something very powerful to me seeing a story like Nier tackle the things it does in Kainé's Dreams. It's a brutal, extremely upsetting depiction of transphobia and hate, to a degree that it's is activley difficult to read all the way through.
Despite that, though, it's boldly and unflinchingly sympathetic towards Kainé. It puts the player very directly in the shoes of someone experiencing these things front and centre, and makes it clear exactly how awful it is to live with this type of thing. How dehumanising it is.
Then, after all of those awful things, it presents us with her grandma. someone who is completely accepting, and we see how much it means to her. How much someone loving you with no holds barred can do for someone.
It was shocking to see such a real and resonant piece of writing, directed so specifically from a popular, non-indie title even today, nevermind one originally released in 2010.
As noted, i do think that there is a lot of fair things to say negativley about how this game handles the topic in general, and even with Kainé's Dreams, but this was for me an extremely compelling piece of fiction within an already really great game.
