She was beautiful.

It wasn't the first time that Mikey had seen her, wasn't the first time that he'd befriended the time traveler known as Renet. However this time around there was something.....different about her.

Perhaps it was the smile, full of life and sincerity and beaming.

Or maybe it was her chipper personality, the kind that dragged those around into her cheer and brought smiles onto their faces.

Or perhaps it was her eyes. A beautiful shade of brown that was full of kindness and determination to get the job done.

Mikey didn't know exactly what it was about Renet this time around. Didn't know what it was that drew him in like a moth to a flame. But here in his current life, Mikey found himself falling hard and fast for her. It wasn't often that the orange turtle fell in love. Many lifetimes that he'd lived he'd never been so gone for a woman. The only one he could remember, was from his first life.

Her name was Kala.

She'd been......incredible.

Kind hearted and full of spirit. A bit rebellious in nature and she was as tough as nails but the beautiful smiles and shining eyes had him falling hard for her when he'd first met her. Then he died, only to be reborn once more in a different body but with the same name. He remembered waiting for Kala, hoping that maybe he'd see her again.

He never did.

He made it a personal choice to stay away from anyone who could be a romantic interest after that. And for several lifetimes he'd been successful in it. But then Renet fell into his arms, and he was struck with that familiar warm pang in his chest. The familiar throb of his heart as it skipped a beat at her smile, reminding him so much of Kala sometimes that the wonderful feeling was painful as well.

Mikey knew that it was a bad idea. Falling in love with someone, when there was no guarantee that he'd ever see them again in his next run. It was a painful experience. To be haunted by smiles and chiming laughter belonging to someone he at one point saw himself having a future with. If he wasn't stuck with this curse, wasn't stuck with these memories of pasts that he once lived, he would marry Renet in the future. When he'd grown into a man and could stay by her side. If he hadn't been reborn he would have married Kala too in that first lifetime. Would have built that white picket fence life with her by his side. But he didn't have the luxury, hadn't been blessed like his brothers and friends to forget about those phantoms that left him scarred with his heart.

"Michelangelo, are you coming?"

Renet's voice, gentle and concerned brought Mikey to the present time. To the current moment that he was living, dressed as an elf in an D&D style setting. Surrounded by his older brothers who were looking at him in worry at him zoning out. Especially when they were trying to find April. The blue eyed turtle shot Renet and his brothers a small smile, the mask back in place.

"I'm coming, I just got distracted by the trees is all. They're incredible!"

Mikey chimed in enthusiasm, straying his loved ones away from his earlier mood. It worked as his brothers let it go, Raph's grumbling filling the air and Donnie and Leo's exasperated yet fond sighs accompanied the red clad turtle's half hearted ranting. Mikey went to follow behind them when he felt a hand gently slip into his. Baby blues snapped up to meet Renet's chocolate brown, a smile coming onto her angelic face. With a gentle tug, she began to lead the two of them onwards giving his hand a reassuring squeeze. Mikey felt his throat tighten and his heart stutter as he tentatively squeezed it back.

It wasn't a good idea to do this, wasn't a good idea to entertain something that was so tangible and yet so forbidden in a way. Knew that by the end of this, he'd be left with the shattered pieces of his heart once again in the next run. Haunted by the rose tinted memories of Renet just as he was with Kala.

But maybe......he could pretend that he could have this.

Maybe.........

Maybe he could forget about the looming tragedy, the unwritten sorrows that await for him in the next life. Just for a little while he could enjoy this moment.

see, here’s the thing. my feelings about fandom’s old platitude of how ugh, wouldn’t it be MUCH better if love triangles were resolved by joining everyone in a polytriad?!? aside (triangles have a point, so that is hardly fit for every single one. also messiness is fine. hell, a good triad storyline could be messy as fuck and the better for it, why is it always proposed as a “peaceful” resolution)... that’s just not what Sense8 did with Kalagang + Rajan.

maybe they intended to develop an ot3 from the beginning or maybe not, and maybe if they’d had more time to develop it properly it could’ve been better, or maybe not. but imo, it lacked the set up of a love triangle in the first place.

I’m of the mind that a lot of love triangles are pretty obviously staked in one of the part’s favour from the beginning, on a Doylist level. you can easily see the pattern they follow (spoiler: it’s often misogyny; although sometimes other kinds of bigotry appear to spice things up!). but on a Watsonian level there’s supposed to be... more.

the thing is, with the show’s set-up, what we had is this: Rajan was the appropriate man. the catch. the rich, politically well-connected man Kala has more in common with and everyone and their mother is pressuring her to marry. everything about him is perfect on paper! and yet. Kala isn’t feeling it. there’s no *spark*. she’s going through the motions (even future father in law saw it and tried to cancel the wedding!).

Wolfgang could not be MORE inappropriate for Kala. they couldn’t be more different. worlds apart, in more ways than one. absolutely inconvenient when everything about Rajan is studiously so.

but when she sees him? FIRE. pure, pure fire. they’re drawn to one another despite how mismatched they seem at first sight (until you dig a little deeper). the passion is of the charts and as much as they might try sometimes, they just can’t stay away. when one is in danger, the other loses their SHIT.

if this was a set-up where Kala, Wolfgang, AND Rajan were all central characters, you could get away with calling this a love triangle. but the reality is that Kala and Wolfgang are main characters, and Rajan is a few steps down that ladder.

so is the result a love triangle? or... is this a set-up that screams “Kalagang are the EPIC, FOR THE AGES TRUE LOVE, and Rajan is the obstacle that must be overcome: a man Kala is marrying out of a sense of duty at beast, and simple inertia and boredom with her own life or inability to direct it at worse”?

and I know the show was praised to hell and back for NOT following up on this, and instead going with something ~quirkier and unique, more unexpected; for “subverting the audience’s expectations”. that can be a good thing! although it still irks me how a lot of the praise seemed to be about how Rajan wasn’t villified to prop Kalagang. that’s a good thing for Rajan’s character and the optics that would’ve resulted in such a choice (in a show that was already spotty regarding race, let’s be honest).

but a.) despite the fact that, yes, “husband mistreats or disappoints wife” is a trite, all too common phenomenon in our world, that doesn’t mean it’s inherently bad to tell such a story, or that it can’t be done in a compelling way, and these conversations always acted like it was so. and b.) Rajan being a good man does not mean getting married to him and staying married to him were good choices for Kala. love isn’t a debt you incurr in when someone’s kind to you and/or fundamentally decent to others.

the resolution of this story seemed to hinge into, “love is not finite. there is plenty to spare, and we need to expand our minds when it comes to it”. that’s a lovely sentiment, but with these three it didn’t quite land for me the way it did with other dynamics. and each time I rewatch a little I walk away with a poorer impression of it. it doesn’t quite *click*; the pieces don’t fit together. and I don’t think lack of time due to the cancellation and a rushed finale are solely to blame for that. like, yeah, it’s cute, it’s funny (Rajan’s actor is pretty great at all that); it’s quirky. but I don’t find it effective.

the set-up of Kala’s own feelings is at the epicenter of it. and I just... can’t actually buy they changed in nature. she grows to care for Rajan, to respect him and appreciate him and see him as a honourable man. but “you can love many people equally, if not in the same ways” falls completely flat here, because the difference in her feelings for Wolfgang and her feelings for Rajan are a matter of both quantity and quality. it’s a different love, and a lesser love for it; it’s being built up like that from the start. she’s so lukewarm about Rajan, especially in comparison to how she feels for Wolfgang, that it’s borderline painful and definitely awkward to see. even the way the camera shoots them vs. Kalagang scenes is wildly different, empathising the mundanality of one pair and the ~~epicness of the other.

tl;dr, my problem is that, at no point during the show, do I believe Kala has romantic feelings, let alone some with true depth, for Rajan. which means seeing them set up as a triad (or even a balanced V-shaped relationship with occasional threesomes lol) just... doesn’t convince me. at all.

I've written something where Rajan is kidnapped before his trial, I'm writing something about Rajan thinking about Wolfgang as his husband. And I've got a weird AU idea about soulmates, like Kala and Rajan know their soulmates and marry and then suddenly Kala feels something else and it's Wolfgang who has been blocking his soulbond so she wouldn't get hurt by his life, and he doesn't realise Rajan is his soulmate too. Obvs they go to find him, a bit of a rescue mission. I don't know, it's odd in my head but I like how it feels?

And yes, I am a total perfectionist in fic writing! I've been writing for decades and sometimes I get stuck on a single sentence and I have to ask my hubby 'no context, but does this make sense?!' The man is a saint!

Ooh, lots of action, nice! The soulmate au sounds awesome, I'm kinda excited about it! Just a passing thought, but it'd be fun to read about a rajalagang wedding.

It's so sweet that your partner's helping with your writing! ^^ Does he write too? I'm very lucky, my fiancée is a writer as well and she's very creative so when I need to figure out a plot I bounce ideas off her x) (I correct and translate her writings in exchange so it's okay if I steal ideas XD)

It’s an odd question. A bit tamer than the ones he’s normally asked by the shrouded members of Wonderland’s populace.  It’s rather plain in fact and he has to think. He’s been learning about human food ask of late so there’s to consider. There is also Windarian dishes he had when he lived there for those three short years - but everything was much too hot and he honestly didn’t find anything he attached to very much beyond the bread that Raiya-vahree would bake. 

“Makea Meloni.” he sounds with a grin on his lips.  “It was an extremely sweet fruit that was deeply purple on the inside. I believe the humans would have referred to it as a melon. We didn’t get it often because it only grew up high in the mountains and only in the coldest months of the year. I miss the taste of it honestly. I have yet to find anything that compares. Even in all of Wonderland I have yet to find anything that even comes close.” 

Still he smiles as he continues to think.  “Sateenkaari kala is another. A fish that lived in the lake at the base of the mountains. It’s scales were reflective and they would shine in every color. It was a mild taste but I enjoyed it. My people pulled much of our food from the waters so fish were quite a common thing for us. It paired well with most things.  Much like makea meloni  I have yet to find a taste that is comparable to Misterica’s seafood.” 

There’s a pause and his lips spread out more so than they already were and his eyes shine. 

“But I must say in recent days the humans have introduced me to something they call cheesecake and I have to admit I’m infatuated with it. It’s such a clever little creation and it’s taste is quite heavenly. I have found of the human’s food I love this cheesecake and a drink they call Hot Chocolate. They put small sugar clouds in it and they call them marshmallows. I must say I love them as well. 

So I suppose when you really get down to it. I just - I really love sweet things.  I would have ate the sweet gel straight out of the sokerin varsi if Mother would have let me get away with it, but the one time I got caught she was very cross with me. ”

Question do you ship Leosagi, Leorai or others?

Ah! Well tbh-

03 Leorai and 07 Leorai I ship them, mainly because I'm a huge sucker for the forbidden lovers from different sides of two opposing parties troupe. Leorai also applies for the other types of media where they're not related. As long as they're not related then I like the ship.

12 Leorai absolutely not due to obvious reasons. This also goes for Rise Leorai cuz again for obvious reasons. Absolutely do not ship these variants of Leorai and I'll die on this hill.

Leosagi......hmmm.....well tbh........

I don't....really ship them. At least romantically. Like yes it's an adorable ship and I love the fan art people make but I just like the thought of Leo having a friend cuz honestly he deserves to have that. He deserves to have someone he can confined in like Donnie has April or Raph has Casey ya know? So it's strictly platonic in the Leosagi department for me.

I also ship Mikey and Renet from the 12 series as well as Mikey and Shinigami from the 12 series, cuz they're adorable as all hell and work well with one another in both pairings, as well as Mikey and Kala cuz omg how can you not (dude they carry little photos of one another help-).

Ramona absolutely in both the 12 series and 87 series cuz they're literally perfect and complement each other perfectly. April and Casey in basically every version that there is, cuz yes, literally been my OTP since childhood. April and Donnie and Casey from the 12 series (it can go as either an OTP or OT3 for all three of them). And finally I love the ship of Leo and Lotus Blossom from the 87 series it's super cute.

Oh also Leo and April from the 12 series cuz they're incredibly cute and I simply love the chemistry between them it's just so good.
