KT. For many tea lovers, discovering a fresh cup of tea that is different from any other is part of the thrill. Especially with that first sip. The next time you are travelling on NH 75 from Mangalore to Bangalore, or the other way, and are passing through a small town called Kalladka, keep your eyes peeled for a rather worn down restaurant on the highway - Hotel Laxmi Nivas. It doesn't matter whether it's late in the morning or early evening, make sure to take a pit stop here. If not for anything else, ask for their house speciality - Kalladka Tea, or KT as it is popularly known as. Don't expect any 5-star experience when you step in. Instead, what greets you is old world charm. A small, dimly lit restaurant with wooden tables and benches. So what goes into that glass of KT that cheers? At first glance, it's one fourth layer of potent tea decoction that sits atop thick milk. It's served in an old style glass cup, which in typical South Indian style, is then placed in a small stainless steel bowl. A steel spoon is conveniently provided too, to stir this delicious brew. Even though the ingredients are the same, part of the kick is the presentation itself. Of course, the amount of sugar and consistency of milk also help make this truly, a cup that cheers. Though it's been served for over 30 years, its origin is still a bit of mystery, even to its present manager, who happens to be the grandson of the original owner. As for all you coffee lovers, don't despair.
