B-5 : Oscars 2023 Predictions - A Film fan's perspective (Part - 3)
We are just a week away from the 95th Academy Awards, a.k.a. The Oscars®. It will happen on March 13 at 5:30 PM IST. The celebrations of the Oscar season are at their peak. Amid the fun and excitement, here's a look at the final segment of the technical award categories and our predictions of the winners:-
Tumblr media
Best Sound
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Viktor Prášil, Frank Kruse, Markus Stemler, Lars Ginzel, and Stefan Korte
Avatar: The Way of Water – Julian Howarth, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Dick Bernstein, Christopher Boyes, Gary Summers, and Michael Hedges
The Batman – Stuart Wilson, William Files, Douglas Murray, and Andy Nelson
Elvis – David Lee, Wayne Pashley, Andy Nelson, and Michael Keller
Top Gun: Maverick – Mark Weingarten, James H. Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon, and Mark Taylor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prediction(s): All Quiet on the Western Front/Top Gun: Maverick
It's usually a war/military movie or a musical that wins the Sound award. Topgun: Maverick seems to be a strong competitor because of the Action-filled dogfighting scenes and final combat in the climax. Western Front is also a strong contender because of the battle scenes.
Best Production Design
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Production Design: Christian M. Goldbeck; Set Decoration: Ernestine Hipper
Avatar: The Way of Water – Production Design: Dylan Cole and Ben Procter; Set Decoration: Vanessa Cole
Babylon – Production Design: Florencia Martin; Set Decoration: Anthony Carlino
Elvis – Production Design: Catherine Martin and Karen Murphy; Set Decoration: Bev Dunn
The Fabelmans – Production Design: Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Karen O'Hara
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
From the 1950s to the 1970s, the sets well-exhibit the story of the King of Rock n Roll - from his home to the carnivals to the stadiums to the TV and recording studios to the lavishing hotels of Las Vegas.
Best Cinematography
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – James Friend
Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths – Darius Khondji
Elvis – Mandy Walker
Empire of Light – Roger Deakins
Tár – Florian Hoffmeister
Tumblr media
Prediction: All Quiet on The Western Front
It's because the camera work of James Friend captures the horrors of the First World War. The fighting in broad daylight is realistic and gives chills every time you see it.
Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Heike Merker and Linda Eisenhamerová
The Batman – Naomi Donne, Mike Marino, and Mike Fontaine
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Camille Friend and Joel Harlow
Elvis – Mark Coulier, Jason Baird, and Aldo Signoretti
The Whale – Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Anne Marie Bradley
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
Is it possible to make a movie on Elvis Presley without his puffed hair and sideburns? Hairstyles play a crucial role in his era of the 1950s-70s.
Best Costume Designing
Nominees:
Babylon – Mary Zophres
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Ruth E. Carter
Elvis – Catherine Martin
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Shirley Kurata
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris – Jenny Beavan
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
The film is all about colors, nostalgia, and costumes of the Presley years.
Best Film Editing
Nominees:
The Banshees of Inisherin – Mikkel E. G. Nielsen
Elvis – Matt Villa and Jonathan Redmond
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Paul Rogers
Tár – Monika Willi
Top Gun: Maverick – Eddie Hamilton
Tumblr media
Prediction: Top Gun: Maverick
The editing of the sortie scenes and the final aerial battle is what makes the Top Gun sequel the ultimate winner of the editing award.
Best Visual Effects
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Frank Petzold, Viktor Müller, Markus Frank, and Kamil Jafar
Avatar: The Way of Water – Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett
The Batman – Dan Lemmon, Russell Earl, Anders Langlands, and Dominic Tuohy
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Geoffrey Baumann, Craig Hammack, R. Christopher White, and Dan Sudick
Top Gun: Maverick – Ryan Tudhope, Seth Hill, Bryan Litson, and Scott R. Fisher
Tumblr media
Prediction: Avatar: The Way of Water
Cameron's film can become the first sequel to win the same award in this category. The beautiful visuals of the world of Pandora would surely take the trophy home.

Katyrina Kachinsky | Brush With Death
Main FC: Juno Temple Older FC: Annie Murphy Main Verse: Seattle Sexuality: Pansexual Occupation: Mortuary Cosmetologist (nights) & Floral Designer (days)
There’s never an ugly situation Katyrina (kat-ur-ina) can’t beautify. She always tends to see the beauty in the world (and in people, even when it’s not entirely deserved).
Katyrina’s mother was trafficked from Russia to America by the Sokolov mob dynasty with the promise of a job and good life. Instead, Misha found herself forced into a prostitution ring (which was disguised as a maid service). Katyrina never learned her father’s identity, though she suspects he was among her mother’s regulars. When she was five, they moved into a nice apartment, leaving the single-bedroom they shared with 20 other women). Misha stopped working--apparently, Katyrina’s father paid off her ‘contract.’ Every expense was paid for by a mystery beneficiary (Katyrina’s father), but they had to change their last name to stay hidden from the Sokolov family. Katyrina started school and met other children with normal lives and families. Misha taught her daughter to always take care of her appearance--that it was her strongest, most subtle weapon in life--leading Katyrina to develop an obsession with YouTube tutorials, beauty magazines, and influencers. Her mother never let her create posts of her own, though, wary the wrong people would see Katyrina on-screen.
The happiness lasted 11 years before the Sokolov’s finally found Katyrina’s mother--and had her shot.
Katyrina made sure her mother looked gorgeous, flawless, even in death. She preserved that image of her mother--stunning, as if preparing for an award ceremony or the wedding she never had--in her mind. One final, lasting image.
Katyrina ended up in the foster system for the last two years of high school. During that time, she started working as a nail tech to save up for college. She made the most of the experience and picked up Korean (as well as a little Japanese). She worked through college, though during her first two years as an undergrad, Katyrina remained unsure about her major. The image her mother in a casket kept returning to her mind until Katyrina realized the perfect job was sitting right in front of her. She decided then to become a mortuary cosmetologist, studied desairology, and minored in botany (her mother’s secret passion).
After she graduated, Katyrina started working nights at funeral homes as a freelancer. During the day, she worked as a floral designer, namely for big events and weddings. She often jokes that her two jobs allow her to balance high points in life with the lowest point of all; life and death.
Katyrina is bubbly and personal. She always wants to uncover a person’s hidden history, to dig deeper than the outer layer they showed on the surface. Katyrina sees each person as a diamond in the rough; you have to see past the coal to find the glimmering gem underneath. She views her clients the same way. Even in death, there’s beauty.
While working as a floral designer, she meets Kamille, one of the city’s most prominent wedding planners. She partners with Kamille for the majority of the engagement parties and weddings she works on. While working as a mortuary cosmetologist, a curious true crime podcast creator, Tala, sneaks into the funeral home. Instead of kicking Tala out, Katyrina befriends her. The two spend hours discussing the murder and became fast friends. When she’s permitted to, Katyrina feeds Tala pieces of information about interesting deaths she works on. Katyrina encounters a crime investigator while on the job as well. Eventually, Alaska introduces her to Blaire--another of Katyrina’s closest friends.
When she’s upset or angry, Katyrina’s eyes tear up; a response she can’t control. She can tell you the scientific name of every flower, as well as the hidden meaning associated with each blossom. She loves romcom movies and slasher films, though the later are sometimes so bad that she views them as comedies. Katyrina loves Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald (her mother’s favorite, which she plays while working on floral designs), along with Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, and Shawn Mendes (which she plays while working at funeral homes). She’s also obsessed with Tala’s podcast, Unsung Murders.
Katyrina loves froyo (topped with black cherries, chocolate chips, and white chocolate syrup) or Cherry Garcia Ben & Jerry’s when she’s sad. She eats Korean fried chicken on her cheat days (Wednesdays) and Korean tacos (which her coworkers got her hooked on). She tends to order lobster when she’s on a date, if it’s an option. Katyrina talks with her hands and gives the people she loves the warmest smile--but anyone who scorns her gets the coldest glare. She sometimes talks too quickly when she has an idea, and always sketches her bouquets when she’s brainstorming. Katyrina’s favorite flowers include crocus, irises, and lilac. Her favorite colors are bubblegum pink and gold.

A man in his 30s has been stabbed to death in broad daylight on a London street, marking the third murder to hang over the capital in a blood-soaked 24 hours.  Just before 5pm yesterday an 18-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were killed in separate attacks just 12 minutes apart, within 12 miles of each other, in south London. Three men were also found stabbed and slashed in Clapham around 3am this morning, but managed to escape with their lives. Police are yet to make any arrests following this afternoon's murder on Alton Street, Poplar, the 59th to rock the capital, but 14 people - including nine males aged between 16 and 19, and a girl aged 17 - were arrested last night in connection with the attacks.  Police and forensics officers at the scene in Tower Hamlets, East London after a man suffered stab injuries this afternoon and was pronounced dead A fleet of police cars pull up following this afternoon's murder on Alton Street, Poplar, the 59th to rock the capital Police are yet to make any arrests but forensics officers are working on the crime scene An air ambulance in attendance after a man in his 30s was stabbed in Tower Hamlets, London, this afternoon. A crime scene is now in place and officers have said they are planning to notify his next of kin. A spokesman said they are keeping an 'open mind' as to the motive for the stabbings.  Some 90 minutes later, a man in his 40s was stabbed in the chest in Edmonton, north London.   The victim suffered a single stab wound to the chest and was airlifted to hospital where he is in a critical but stable condition.  The incident happened at 3.30pm in North Square, Edmonton, north London.  Officers from Enfield are investigating the incident.  So far there have not been any arrests.  Scotland Yard confirmed they are seeking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the attack.  Anyone with information is asked to call Enfield police station on 101 quoting CAD5047/15JUN, Tweet @MetCC or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.  A man in his 40s was stabbed and critically injured in an attack in Edmonton, north London at 3.30pm today. The victim was taken to hospital where he is being treated for his injuries The first victim in 24 hours of blood-letting was stabbed on Deeside Road, Wandsworth, at 4.42pm on Friday, and died a short time later. Emergency services battled to save the boy's life but he succumbed to his wounds at the scene. The second boy was shot dead in a car park on Hartville Road, Plumstead at 4.54pm, some 12 miles away. A police tent has been erected near the scene in Deeside road. A teenager was stabbed to death just before 5pm last night Flowers were left at the scene in Deeside road this morning following the murder Three men and a woman have been arrested in connection with yesterday's Plumstead murder Then three men were found with stab and slash injuries at 3.22am on Bedford Road, Clapham. The condition of two of the men is unknown, but a third man has been reported as having non-life threatening injuries.  Murdered schoolboy's father says young people 'have not learned their lessons' The father of murdered schoolboy Damilola Taylor has said young people still have not learned lessons from his son's death. Speaking at a conference in central London on gun and knife crime, Mr Taylor said: 'Young people have taken life as if it's something to play with'. 'In our work in the past 15 years at the Damilola Taylor Trust, we have found that the problem that underpins the continuous surge in knife crime in the city of London is based on issues around family neglect. Damilola Taylor was found bleeding to death in a stairwell near his home in Peckham, south London, in 2000 'The family issue has often contributed to young people being neglected from home as a result of a dysfunctional home. 'Secondly, part of the discussion that has been emphasised here is that the problem starts in schools as a result of the schools not understanding the background of these children.' He also criticised Boris Johnson during his time as London Mayor. 'Boris Johnson at City Hall, he did his best and what he didn't understand, how to deal with the black community. 'He didn't know the difference between African and Caribbean, he didn't understand what is called the postcode community. He was asking, 'What is the postcode?' - because he wasn't on the ground. Damilola was found bleeding to death in a stairwell near his home in Peckham, south London, after being stabbed in the leg with a broken beer bottle by a gang of youths in 2000.  Flowers were left by members of the public at the scene in Deeside road this morning.  Last night's murders were the 57th and 58th to hit the capital since 43-year-old Adrian Murphy was stabbed in a block of flats in Battersea 11 days ago. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has been criticised for failing to get London's knife crime under control. The city already looks set to meet last year's killing record, where 132 people were killed in 2018.  It exceeded the count for the year before in early November 2018.  Police said that eight males, aged between 16 and 19, have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the Wandsworth stabbing and Plumstead shooting, and remain in custody at west London police stations. Two boys aged 16 and a 17-year-old boy were arrested following the Plumstead shooting alongside a 17-year-old girl.   They were taken to separate police stations for questioning.  In the early hours of this morning an additional four men were arrested in relation to the Clapham stabbing.  Two were taken into custody for violent disorder while one was arrested for carrying a bladed instrument and a fourth for possession of a taser. Police have been trying to notify both murder victims' next of kin. A post mortem will be carried out in each case.  Marina Paget, 22, who lives near the crime scene in Deeside road, Wandsworth, said: 'I walked past at 2.30pm and I didn't see anything, but when I came back from work at 5.30pm it was all going on. 'I walked past I saw what looked like the body on the floor covered in a bag and there were 50 people around, loads of people, two or three ambulances.' London Mayor has been under pressure to get attacks under control as the capital heads for another record year of deaths on its streets. During his state visit, Donald Trump criticised Khan's handling of the situation. Lashing out after the Mayor wrote a piece in The Guardian accusing the US President of using the tactics of a 20th century fascist, Trump said Khan should 'focus on crime in London, not me'. He also said: 'Khan reminds me very much of our very dumb and incompetent Mayor of New York City, de Blasio, who has also done a terrible job - only half his height.'  Officers pictured at the scene where three men were stabbed on Bedford road, Clapham, at 3.22am this morning during another night of bloodshed in the capital Four men were arrested in relation to the Clapham stabbing - two for violent disorder, one after being accused of carrying a bladed instrument and another for possession of a taser. A teenage boy was stabbed to death in Deeside Road, Wandsworth at 16.42 yesterday. A second teenage boy was shot dead at 16.54 in a car park on Hartville Road, Plumstead. On Saturday, three men were stabbed in the early hours of the morning, while a man was murdered at 2pm in Poplar. A man in his 40s was stabbed in the chest 90 minutes later in Edmonton Forensic teams examine evidence at the stabbing scene in Deeside road, Wandsworth A police tent near the scene in Deeside road, Wandsworth, after a teenager was fatally stabbed on Friday evening This morning TfL re-routed buses away from Bedford road in Clapham after it was closed due to the stabbing of three men A police officer climbs out of a van on Hartville Road, Plumstead. A teenage boy was shot in a car park just before 5pm yesterday afternoon, 12 minutes after the first attack in Wandsworth Just 12 minutes after the fatal stabbing a teenage boy was shot dead in a car park in Hartville Road, Plumstead, shortly before 5pm Speaking about the Wandsworth attack, superintendent Richard Smith said the events are a 'stark reminder' that carrying a knife can 'easily result in the taking of someone's life'.  'A young man died in the most tragic of circumstances and our thoughts remain with his family', he said. 'Officers will be patrolling the area throughout the weekend and are available to speak to residents if they have any concerns.' Appealing for information in relation to the Plumstead attack, detective inspector John Marriot said: 'The shooting took place not far from Plumstead railway station and I would urge anyone who was commuting to or from this station to speak with us. 'It was also sunny at the time and a number of people would have been enjoying the weather in the area of Plumstead gardens; I need you to come forward.'  A Met spokesman said: 'Police were called to Deeside Road, SW17 at 1642hrs on Friday, June 14 following reports of a stabbing. Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found a male, believed to be aged in his late teens in a critical condition. 'He died at the scene a short while later. 'A crime scene remains in place and police are appealing for anyone with information on what happened to call them urgently on 101 quoting CAD reference 5877/14June.' Detectives confirmed they are following a number of leads.  Scotland Yard warned local residents in Wandsworth and Plumstead that they will see a heavy police presence as a result of both crimes. Police told ITV News that a cordon will remain in place on Bedford road, Clapham, until it becomes clear whether the stabbings were fatal. A large crime scene has been established around the scene of yesterday's fatal shooting Forensic officers worked through the night at the scene of yesterday's fatal stabbing on Deeside Road, Wandsworth. A teenage boy was attacked at 4.42pm and died a short time later The Metropolitan police have warned that there will be a large police presence in the area following the attack Six men were arrested by officers in connection to the stabbing last night in Wandsworth Mayor of London Sadiq Khan released a statement condemning the murders.  He said: 'I am sickened to hear that two young lives have been ended within minutes of each other in Wandsworth and Greenwich. 'Our overstretched police are working around the clock to keep Londoners safe. They need our support to end this scourge of violence. 'I am in close contact with the Metropolitan Police and locally elected representatives. 'Anybody who has information about what happened either in Wandsworth or Greenwich should do the right thing and call the police, either on 101 or anonymously, through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.' Tooting MP Rosena Allin-Khan said the murder on Deeside road was 'heartbreaking' and 'absolutely tragic'.  'My heart goes out to the family of this victim after this absolutely tragic incident," she wrote on Twitter. 'I spoke at length with people on the Aboyne Estate tonight, anyone with concerns can contact me - I'm here to listen. 'Sending love to the Tooting family tonight - this is heartbreaking.' Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, pictured yesterday at a service of remembrance for Grenfell condemned the murders and called on anyone with information on the killings to contact police or Crimestoppers immediately Sorry we are not currently accepting comments on this article. Welcome to Part Three of 15 Years of Mysteries! The Mystery Book Club (at my local library) kicked off its third year of reading with a tie in to a local community initiative.
In the late 1990s / early 2000s, several communities across the United States created “If all of {city name} read the same book” initiatives to promote reading and discussion. Syracuse’s version, CNY Reads One Book, launched in 2001/2002 with A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines in conjunction with Syracuse Stage which mounted a production of the stage play of Gaines’ work in February/March 2002.
For the 2005/2006 season, the CNY Reads One Book program selected Miriam Grace Monfredo’s North Star Conspiracy. Monfredo’s first novel, Seneca Falls Inheritance, is set against the backdrop of the 1848 Women’s Rights Convention and was an Agatha award nominee for Best First Mystery Novel in 1992. Her second novel, North Star Conspiracy, incorporated the Underground Railroad and abolitionist movements as part of the story.
We were fortunate to host the author for a lecture (followed by a Q&A) at my local library as part of this initiative, and naturally our Mystery Book Club was ready having picked the book for our inaugural read of 2006.
January 2006 Special Event selection
North Star Conspiracy by Miriam Grace Monfredo
Synopsis:  Librarian Glynis Tryon is drawn into the Underground Railroad movement as she investigates the death of a freed slave in this second book of the series.
Thoughts:  An excellent, well researched historical mystery set in Seneca Falls, NY. Glynis is an engaging sleuth.
  February 2006 selection
Death by Chocolate by Diane Mott Davidson
Synopsis:  Goldy Bear is dealing with an abusive ex-husband, a moody teenaged son, and a fledgling catering business. On top of that she witnesses the death of a handsome local shrink. Only she isn’t sure it was just an accident.
Thoughts:  This second book in the Goldy Culinary Mystery series was well-written and entertaining. Not having read the first book prior to this one didn’t have much impact on enjoying the story.
  March 2006 selection
Death by Darjeeling by Laura Childs
Synopsis:  Theodosia Browning left behind the cutthroat world of advertising to return to her roots and open a tea shop in Charleston, South Carolina, but it’s not long before she’s solve less than genteel murder cases. In this series debut, Theodosia caters a home and garden party that ends with a guest dead and clutching an empty teacup. It’s up to Theodosia to clear her reputation and find a killer.
Thoughts:  The novel introduces a cast of colorful characters in a charming setting. It’s a solid debut and mystery plot. Best read accompanied by a cup of tea.
  April 2006 selection
The Amber Room by Steve Berry
Synopsis:  After the death of her father, Rachel Cutler sets off on a journey to uncover a secret history and a lost treasure.
Thoughts:  I remember this being a rather exciting read with lots of interesting historical tidbits.
  May 2006 selection
The Madman’s Tale by John Katzenbach
Synopsis:  A former asylum inmate faces dark memories of the time he was incarcerated, recalling visions of serial killer.
Thoughts:  While a great example of the “unreliable narrator” troupe, this book somewhat misses the mark. Part of this stemmed from a muddled narrative. It’s a better story about the struggles of mental illness than a mystery.
  June 2006 selection
Long Time Gone by J. A. Jance
Synopsis:  J.P. Beaumont investigates a half-century-old murder that may have ties to a more recent slaying involving the ex-wife of Beaumont’s former partner.
Thoughts:  I liked this book, but again, this was well into the series’ run so I felt a disconnect to the character’s history and background circumstances.
  July 2006 selection
The Villa of Mysteries by David Hewson
Synopsis:  The body of a girl is found along the banks of the Tiber River at an archaeological dig. The corpse appears to have been involved in an ancient Dionysian ritual, but this death doesn’t date back to ancient times. Italian detective Nic Costa and his team are assigned to investigate. When the daughter of a British tourist is kidnapped, it becomes a race against time to solve the case before she becomes the next victim.
Thoughts:  Reading this police procedural was a lot like watching a cop drama show. Many of the characters had their own subplots. At times (especially early on), the story seemed a bit disjointed, but it all came together satisfyingly in the end.
  August 2006 selection
The Sultan’s Seal by J. B. White
Synopsis:  In the waning days of the Ottoman Empire, magistrate Kamil Pasha investigates the death of an Englishwoman that may have political ramifications.
Thoughts:  This debut novel is an intriguing historical mystery that takes readers to an under-used time and place in the genre.
  August 2006 Special Event selection
The Poe Shadow by Matthew Pearl
Synopsis:  A Baltimore lawyer delves into the mystery of Edgar Allan Poe’s death. To help him solve the case, the lawyer tracks down the real-life model for Poe’s famed detective, C. Auguste Dupin.
Thoughts:  I’d previously read Pearl’s The Dante Club which featured Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, and J. T. Fields. These literary giants are working on the first American translation of The Divine Comedy, but the project is imperiled by a killer who appears to be mimicking the scenes from the Dante Alighieri’s work. While Pearl’s sophomore effort isn’t as solid as his debut, the blend of fact and fiction make for an engaging read.
  September 2006 selection
Steeplechase by Jane Langton
Synopsis:  In the 18th and final book in the Homer Kelly series, historian Homer Kelly and his wife, Mary, search for a lost church that has ties to a Civil War era feud.
Thoughts:  This was a disappointing read. The expectation is that it’s a murder mystery story. It is not. This novel fits more firmly in the historical fiction vein. The storytelling is actually fine, but those looking for a detective story won’t be satisfied by the modern day hunt for a lost church steeple.
  October 2006 selection
Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
Synopsis:  Sookie Stackhouse is gifted or cursed depending on what you think precisely, but she can read your mind literally. Of course when a serial killer is targeting women who are dating vampires, reading minds can sure help. Oh, vampires? In Sookie’s world they exist, and she’s started dating one. Unfortunately, that makes her the killer’s next target.
Thoughts:  A little horror or the paranormal make for a great October read leading up to Halloween. And yes, this series debut novel has all the hallmarks of a classic mystery. The whodunnit aspect of the novel was just as satisfying as being introduced to Sookie’s world and the books and TV series, True Blood, that followed.
  November 2006 selection
A Field of Darkness by Cornelia Read
Synopsis:  Madeline Dare followed her heart to marry ruggedly handsome Dean, a farmboy-genius investor. Now Maddie’s stuck in the post-industrial wasteland of Syracuse, NY, while her husband spends weeks on the road perfecting the railway equipment innovation that might be their only chance to escape.  When a set of long-buried dog tags link her favorite cousin to the scene of a vicious double homicide, Maddie, drawn by the desire to clear her cousin’s name, uncovers a startling web of intrigue and family secrets that could prove even more deadly.
Thoughts:  I liked the mystery here (based on an actual local case) and the depictions of some of the characters. What I didn’t like was the constant bashing of the locale. We get it. The main character hates Syracuse!
  December 2006 selection
For the Love of Mike by Rhys Bowen
Synopsis:  In this three-time award-winning mystery, Molly Murphy goes undercover in the garment industry in 1901 New York City. She’s landed two cases: searching for the missing daughter of an Irish aristocrat and investigating a case of industrial espionage.
Thoughts:  Our group liked the first book so much (see the 2005 selection list), we decided to read the second!
***
And those were the selections for 2006. Another mixed bag of genre types. The reason for two selections in August was part of a cross promotion for another book club at the library meant to appeal to fiction and mystery genre readers alike.
In 2004, I began a book discussion group focused on the mystery genre. In the 15 years since, the Mystery Book Club has read more than 150 mysteries, suspense thrillers, and a few true crime tales. Follow along as I take you through the years in a look back at “15 Years of Mysteries.” Stay tuned for part four.

Cardiff 2-1 Huddersfield: A late goal from Junior Hoilett nicks three points for Neil Warnock’s side
Cardiff 2-1 Huddersfield: a late goal from Junior Hoilett nicks three points in front of Neil Warnock against the managerless Terriers
Joe Ralls opened the score for Cardiff City hosts for half-time
Trevoh Chalobah equalized a brilliant solo goal in the 50th minute
The late Junior Hoilett winner came in the 88th jubilant spark scenes

Mark Hudson will always be remembered as a legend from Cardiff City after catching the Bluebirds for promotion to the Premier League in 2013.
But Huddersfield & # 39; s new caretaker head coach suffered misery on his return to the capital of Wales in the first game of the Terriers since the firing of Jan Siewert thanks to the late winner of Junior Hoilett.
This would have been a Premier League match last season, but both parties were banned from the top flight and had a bad start to their championship campaigns.
Joe Ralls of Cardiff hits the hosts in the front right at the end of the first half
Ralls drives away to celebrate after the Bluebirds in front
CARDIFF 2-1 HUDDERSFIELD MATCH FACTS
Cardiff City (4-2-3-1): Smithies; Peltier, Morrison, Flint, Bennett; L Bacuna, Ralls; Whyte (Vaulks 90), Tomlin (Hoilett 76), Murphy; Glatzel (Bogle 76)
Unused substitutes: Day, Vassell, Nelson, Brown
Posted: Bennett
Targets: Ralls 42, Hoilett 88
Huddersfield Town (4-2-3-1): Grabara; Hadergjonaj, Elphick, Schindler, Kongolo; Hogg, Chalobah (J Bacuna 77); Van La Parra (Campbell 85), Mbenza (Diakhaby 74), Pritchard; Grant
Unused substitutes: Schofield, Kachunga, Brown, O & # 39; Brien
Booked: Elphick
Purpose: Chalobah 50
Referee: Jarred Gillett
Attendance: 21,821
Trevoh Chalobah canceled the Cardiff opener by Joe Ralls, but Huddersfield is now in the drop zone thanks to Hoilett rising from the couch to win it.
Cardiff gave a first Cardiff league start since December 2017 to Lee Tomlin – who is open about his mental health problems – one of the four changes to his 3-0 hammering at Reading.
Huddersfield also made three, but there was no room for Steve Mounie when he went to Besiktas.
Home wing Josh Murphy had his first chance, but his glorious long-distance effort was tipped over by Huddersfield goalkeeper Kamil Grabara
Cardiff's £ 5.5 million summer that Robert Glatzel signed a Tomlin ball over the crossbar despite being only a few meters from the goal.
It summarizes the low confidence of both parties. On the other hand, Rajiv Van La Parra found the net match after he was played by Alex Pritchard.
Like Glatzel, he should have done better.
As Reading had done, Huddersfield easily bypassed the Cardiff press, and after Karlan Grant suppressed nuts to Sean Morrison, Jonathan Hogg forced Alex Smithies to make a great rescue.
Huddersfield & # 39; s Trevor Chalobah & # 39; s scores with an excellent left-wing individual effort
Chalobah, lent by Chelsea, celebrates following his equalizer
Cardiff had a head of steam before the break and eventually broke the deadlock when Aden Flint & # 39; s knockdown fell to Ralls who just hit his weaker right foot in the 42nd minute. Glatzel and Joe Bennett came close to doubling Cardiff's lead for the whistle.
Huddersfield led the game to the start of the second half. In the 50th minute, Cardiff Chalobah left too much room on the edge of the box.
It is expensive because the former Ipswich man found the bottom corner with his left foot with helpless Smithies.

Stay away, fools
Dazz & Brie dance on the grave of their past mistakes.
About a minute into the 1989 video for "Love Shack" by The B-52's, Fred Schneider bounds past a sign that reads "SHAQUE D'AMOUR: Stay Away Fools, Love Rules" and into a shimmying, shaking dance party that involves pastel martinis, projectile wigs, red fringe and goats. It was that video that sprung to mind when, at a house show Dazz & Brie played this summer, my eyes scanned briefly to the large wooden dresser on my right. It was quite literally rocking back and forth, tilting in sympathy with the 50 or so folks jumping up and down in a historic Stifft Station house that was clearly not built to withstand that degree of boogie.
"When people come to our shows and they wanna be uplifted," vocalist Kabrelyn "Brie" Boyce said, "we put all our energy into it." And maybe it's because some of that dresser-drawer-tilting energy has been bubbling up for a while; Dazz & Brie played a grand total of six shows in 2016. In 2017 thus far, they've played around 50.
"It's a little bit of a blur," multi-instrumentalist Dazzmin Murry said. I asked whether it's been logistically difficult to mobilize a sextet — Dazz & Brie's outsized band, The Emotionalz — for that marathon of performances. "There are six of us, six personalities," Murry said, "but it's been easier than I'd imagined it would be. Everyone was just so willing," she said, and noted that ringers like Tray Cowan and Samarra Samone have stepped up when a band member or two wasn't available.
I cornered the duo into naming a few favorite venues and shows, and they obliged: the White Water Tavern, Low Key Arts' Hot Water Hills Festival in Hot Springs and a show in the swank new Murphy Arts District in El Dorado. On stage, the band's anthems are clever and buoyant, and the diligence the ensemble applies to both songwriting and rehearsal shines through. Boyce's vocal melismas soar effortlessly, Murry and Darius Blanton swap between drums and keyboard and bassist Kamille Shaw shows off a singing voice that would easily make her lead vocalist in any other band. The group's got a well of vocal and instrumental resources the bottom of which I'm not sure we've seen yet. Because of that, musical possibilities that might be off limits to other groups open up: the SWV-esque chorus to "Old Tee Shirt," for example, or the layered countermelodies on the reggae-influenced "Can'tchasegirls." Or the part where the bass player whips out a flute. Overflow is inevitable: Shaw has been showcasing her own set at a series called "Sushi & Chill," guitarist Gavin Le'nard has his own project (check out his steamy single, "Three," on Soundcloud), and the immensely gifted "backup" (air quotes here) singer, Hope Dixon, essentially the band's not-so-secret weapon (Exhibit A: "Reign Dance"), opened a show for the larger group with a solo set in September.
If they're worried about things getting stale — and they are: "We never play the exact same set," Murry said — it doesn't show on stage. The vibe is warm, collaborative and elevated, and by now there are enough patrons that wail along with "Indigo" that a packed performance can feel euphoric. "I wanna dance on the grave of my past mistakes," they sing on "Reign Dance," and you get the feeling that catharsis is happening, collectively, right then and there.
There's some irony in the fact that Dazz & Brie's two albums begin with the word "can't," an idea conspicuously absent from the duo's ethos. A lot of the band's sudden success was "just thinking this into existence," Boyce said. "If we can get our minds there," Murry added, "we can get there."
About this time last year, in a video leading up to the release of 2016's "Can't Afford California," Murry and Boyce recall a nightmarish Dallas recording session with a self-obsessed, hypercritical sound engineer, and they paint it as the point when they decided they'd self-record and distribute their first record. "After that session," they said, "we were like, 'OK, we're gonna go and buy our own equipment and nobody else is gonna make us feel bad about our art.' " Murry and Boyce aren't likely snarky enough to say it, but I will: I hope that sound engineer finds himself in the teeming, blissful crowd at a Dazz & Brie show someday, and I hope he goes home kicking himself for having told these women what they couldn't do.
Stay away, fools
