- “dead of night” by niknak22 (a character study of kevin day, with kerejean hints and so, so much angst. kevin is a really interesting character and i love what niknak22 did with him)

- “say something” by willowbird (genuinely that whole series is awesome. andrew pov of neil struggling with trauma, going non-verbal and injuries, angsty but mostly wholesome.)

- “i wanna see you (be brave)” by arkastadt (matt’s pov of andreil developing… so beautiful. also, has loads of funny moments with the upperclassmen & shows their friendship)

kevin day is not “neil josten but taller” ok?

whether it’s kevneil, kandrew, kandreil. romantic or platonic. yes, these relationships affect him and how interacts, how he evolves. but he affects those he interacts with right back. like it should be. the adjustments should show. should matter. should be kind.

if neil and/or andrew–especially andrew–are mean, degrading, impatient, mocking, superior, frustrated towards kevin, simply because he is kevin, and kevin isn’t exactly that right back with them? the whole potential of a kevin-relationship was missed. pulverized.

kevin is not “neil josten but taller”–he’s kevin fucking day, queen of exy, son of exy, cult survivor, first and only ambidextrous striker, self-taught at that, and has led the palmetto state foxes to victory. he can be mean and ruthless and oblivious and hurtful and egotistical and a real fucking asshole. andrew’s that. neil is those things too. but they’re neil and andrew and kevin. their characters paint the colors with which their traits appear. they’re very evenly matched, that’s why they work so well together, but their differences make for a lot of it as well.

so unless it’s for the angst, the eventual happy ending, the character development, the relationship development, the healing, the therapy, the do-better… and *even* then…

don’t make neil belittle kevin. don’t make kevin the butt of andreil’s mean jokes. don’t make andrew compare kevin to neil. don’t make kevin palatable to andreil.

all three of them already fit together. nora’s shown us.

why would andrew despise kevin for not understanding the kind of communication he has with neil? and why would neil be the norm? before neil, there was kevin. and only kevin. he was the first for andrew. that can never be denied. and andrew would never forget. why would andrew build a relationship with a second neil? why would he isolate kevin with private, mean jokes with neil? why would neil make fun of kevin with exy? why would he get irritated with kevin for talking more than andrew? and why would all of that be for nothing, except establish a toxic base for the triad?

i don’t like it. it’s not two knives and a spoon. it’s three fucking knives. all equally sharp. all equally blunt. all equally handy. all equally hold-able.

three. fucking. knives.

Andrew finds a binder in new kid's duffel bag. Photos, newspaper clips, and every fucking thing about Kevin Day's life. He looks through this stuff, fumbles with delicately folded papers and thinks that he has something in common with Neil Josten.

If anything, Andrew is also quite obsessed with Kevin Day. He just wants to believe that Josten's obsession isn't maniac.

Nicky says Andrew is too greedy. He already has Kevin, so why does he need Neil? Andrew doesn't know. But days and weeks pass by, they share cigarettes and do night practices together and Andrew realises that he can't choose. He realises that he loves them equally. He loves them, but his love just his love just not like other's. He will take a bullet for Kevin, a knife for Josten, because he doesn't know anything better. He had already wanted to die for Aaron, he didn't consider staying alive after the car crash, but he woke up on the hospital bed, not knowing what to live for.

Why did he survive, if there's nothing to do in his life anymore? Aaron was safe now, but he hated him, and Andrew only knew how to die for someone, it was his love language. He doesn't know how to love someone in another way.

He is waiting for a moment to sacrifice himself for Kevin. Kevin has something to do with mafia and they just shoot, no hello's and no goodbyes. Andrew is ready to die and only hopes that Kevin would appreciate it. He gave him a promise and he will defend him by means of his own life.

Neil Josten is no better. He has something to do with mafia and something else. Andrew is waiting for a knife in his guts and he will not hesitate. If it saves Neil's life or at least give him a couple minutes, he will die for him.

Andrew knows that the day will come and there would be no way out. All he will regret about — he can't keep them safe any longer. He has one and only one chance, he can't die twice. He considers his life only to be valuable enough for giving it for them. Only once.

Andrew knows they will have each other. Neil and Kevin, always competitors and always friends, they will stay by each other when Andrew lays his life down for them. They will find strength to live this life, but Andrew never had this strength in the first place.

here’s the Kandreil thing i believe.

if Neil were to die in the events of AFTG, Andrew would go feral and seek cold, bloody revenge until every last person implicated, near or far, paid the price of his fury; and Kevin would willingly, devotedly, shamelessly follow him. over time, once the dust settles like the bodies in the ground, Andrew would heal, mostly thanks to Kevin’s devotion, loyalty, resilience and love, and in return Andrew would double, triple, quadruple down on his fierce protection of Kevin–though not control, never control–enough to seal their unshakeable bond and cement their precious, fragile yet endlessly devoted relationship. they’d heal, and not move on, but live on. together.

if Andrew were to die in the events of AFTG, Neil would call Nathaniel to the surface and pull every string he could get his fingers on to sate his thirst for traitor blood; and Kevin would stretch his charismatic persona act far and wide to get what they want, and get away with it, hands dirtied but records clean. they’d enable each other and push each other to do what must be done, any way they can, however far it goes, until the last guilty breath is exhaled and expiated. then they’d tend to each other’s wounds. all of them. lick and stitch and cover, sometimes, most times, caress, and build back up again, stronger, softer, loving. endlessly loving. and alive. together.

but if Kevin died… what would be left of Andrew and Neil? nothing. death in revenge would be mercy. the utter failure of Neil and Andrew when it came to Kevin, would eventually be the failure of NeilandAndrew. the wouldn’t stand each other, having lost their reason to go on. Andrew breaking his promise to protect Kevin by letting him get killed? Neil’s vow to have at least one of them make it, and for it to be Kevin? complete annihilation. i can’t see it. whether you imagine a romantic Kandreil or a platonic Kevin + Andreil, i simply cannot fathom Neil and Andrew surviving a world without Kevin. it is not possible. freedom isn’t freedom if it’s at the cost of Kevin. it’s just pointless, endless Hell.

and so however you want to imagine Kandreil, remember that Kevin is not the late add-on, the bonus, the third wheel, the burden, the expandable. Kevin is the pillar, the strength, the promise. the key. the reason.
