Extinct species #5
Kangaroo Island Emu
(Dromaius novaehollandiae baudinianus)
The Kangaroo Island emu or dwarf emu was restricted to Kangaroo Island, Australia and was much smaller in size than the mainland emu. It became extinct in about 1827 due to hunting and habitat loss from burning. They fed on berries, grass and seaweed and could run swiftly and defend themselves by sending harsh kicks forward.

I wrote a short fic last night, Tangerine Summers It was based off a colour prompt over on @vgtracy - tangerine. Why it ended up where it did, I have no idea.
But this is the video that I was writing from (from memory, I hunted it down today) - warnings for bushfire and real events. This is a video from Kangaroo Island, South Australia, about 120kms south of where I live. This was part of Australia’s Summer of Fire 2019-2020. The Island is Australia’s second largest Island and HALF of it was burnt to the ground (including my sis-in-law’s brother’s home). At least two people died and so much was lost.
I saw this video around that time and it both artistically and scientifically fascinated me (along with a bucket of terror). I’ve been to KI, we have rellies on KI. I know the bushland and watching these plants pass the truck, I can identify many of them. I’ve seen them in spring and honestly, it hurts.
However, the presence of the fire is somewhat fascinating in its terror, how alive it is and what these firefighting volunteers are facing is far beyond what I am capable of doing.
But this is what it looks like INSIDE the fire. The truck is driving towards the fire front, so if you don’t want to watch all of it, skip to about six or seven minutes in as the fire strengthens.
This is what I put poor Virgil in last night. It is another world. It really is HELL.
