Katakana for emphasis/difference
Earlier I was telling @earhartsease about the use of katakana not only foreign loan words but for emphasis/difference. I found a few examples in my Kanken training app, so I thought I'd share them here.
Tumblr media
Here the question is asking you to convert the syllables オギナウ from katakana to the correct kanji and hiragana combination. In this case, the katakana is used to supply the syllables but not the information in those syllables (not the character, with its embedded meaning, or the cutoff between the character and the hiragana that completes the adjective.
The correct answer here is 補う.
Tumblr media
Here the katakana アイウエ (a i u e) are used like an English multiple choice ABCD. (Correct answer ウ, U, because the compound 若者, wakamono, young person, is comprised of 2 訓読み, kun-yomi, or native Japanese readings).
And here's an example of me answering the type of question in the first example.

This is the other app I have installed to help me read kana. It's free and it teaches how to read and write kana and kanji. It can be installed from F-Droid or from Google Play store.
It's handy because things are customizable, and it tracks what you've learned so far.
So far, I chose the basic hiragana characters for my first list. You can choose the name of the list, the characters, and how you want to learn or review them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the reading exercise, it doesn't ask you to input romaji. It just asks you if you've read correctly or not. You can cheat on this, but what would be the point of that?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like it.

I start my third semester of Japanese in the fall and i have to learn 45 kanji by August 21st. The problem is that while flash cards help me to remember them by sight, it's not very helpful in recalling them to write them. @acuaticamber06 suggested since i have a photographic memory though, maybe pictures would help so I've been challenging myself to draw pictures using the kanji as a base and working in the on-yomi and kun-yomi as details so that not only will i remember what they are I'll also remember how to read them as well.
I decided to share this experiment in hopes that if it works for me, it'll work for others that might have trouble recalling them as well. It's more fun than staring at flashcards and it'll help you associate them with more than just random lines on a paper.

This was an idea I came up with while doing Kanji copy work, and the character '悪' (warui) in the Kanji dictionary I've been using just comes with a whole lot of example words, all of which are negative. Which was when I was like, "I can so imagine Atsushi quoting this at Akutagawa" Also one of the pronunciations is 'Aku' which while a different Kanji from the one used in the name 'Akutagawa Ryuunosuke', is still kind of funny. Hence 'malice' being pronounced as 'aku-i' and 'evil deed' as 'aku-ji'
Didn't really know how to draw Rashoumon, but I ended up going with dragon heads. Cause I feel like I've heard it described similar to dragons somewhere, and it was fun.
Also, kinda random but-
Writing Atsushi and Akutagawa shouting at each other is hilarious.
:D

Pitch, Please Pt. 1 [new series alert]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was launched on the Seitokai IG (seitokaisnihongo). Keep reading this post to get information that is written on the graphics (and the IG caption).
This is a new series that I've been working on for a bit! It'll be discussing pitch accent, dialects, listening comprehension, and anything else that may fall within that category.
If there's a particular dialect that you'd like for us to cover in this series, feel free to stick it in the reblogs, my inbox, my asks, on the Seitokai instagram, or the Seitokai discord server!
Without further ado, here is what the posts say above!
Pitch, Please! Let's talk about pitch accent.
What is it?
Pitch accent, known as 高低アクセント(kōtei akusento) in Japanese, refers to when a language uses pitch to distinguish between homonyms rather than stress/volume. For example: あめ, meaning rain (high pitch to low) vs あめ, meaning candy (low pitch to high pitch).
Pitch accent can vary by region and dialect. The previous example was based on standard/Tokyo dialect. However, the pitch accent is swapped with the Kansai dialect. あめ, meaning rain goes from low pitch to high and あめ, meaning candy goes from high pitch to low.
There are four (4) pitch accent patterns: 平板 (いばん), 頭高 (あたまだか), 中高 (なかだか), and 尾高 (おだか). These will be discussed in further detail in a later post within this series.
How to work on it?
Listen to native speakers (podcasts, news channels, videos, etc.)
Converse with native speakers (if possible)
Mimic the correct pronunciation
Be willing to ask for help and accept correction

四月 三日 2024年
今日は 水曜日です。食べた カ-レとごはん。(idk the kanji for rice yet)
Anyways, here's today's kanji practice ft. some sentences that are probably correct.
Aparentemente yo soy el tipo de persona que llorar en la ducha. Echo de menos a mis perros tanto que duele. Me siento muy triste ahora, y un poco de enfermo por eso.
Despite the emotional shitshow today has been, I feel very powerful with my ability to recognise and read all 6 kanji I have here.

Note
i saw your naoto post and deep dove your persona 4 posts (like a normal person). i am now asking what are your trans naoto discourse opinions
Scariest thing I've ever seen in my ask box
ahem
Personally idc what people headcannon a character's gender identity as (Especially one as poorly handled as Naoto giving you so many avenues for interpreting their Gender), just as general rule. Have fun with it, they aren't real people, Godspeed. As for my personal reading of Naoto as a character though...
So I'm not gonna deny that the specific way Naoto (specifically their shadow) talks about themselves comes across as transphobic. Shocking that a game that first came out in, what, 2008, isn't very good at talking about Gender issues. If/when P4 gets a remake they will almost certainly over hall the script for Naoto's arc (Thank god).
That being said I think Naoto's choice to crossdress her way out of misogyny is a way to show her social isolation and naïvety. Naoto expresses that she didn't have any friends until she met the Investigation Team and that she read a stupid amount of fiction from her grandfather's library. Crossdressing to do quote-un-quote men's work is something pretty confined to fiction, which was Naoto's only real window into the outside world (Other then the police force). Anyone with any real world experience could tell you that transitioning (or crossdressing) is not going to get you respect, especially in the police force.
I think Naoto's social link does a fine job of implying that pretending to be man was making her miserable, but I think it could have been more explicate about it. The spin offs however (Dancing and Arena specifically, if you bring up Persona X Detective Naoto in my presence I will reduce you to atoms) Really put a fair bit of effort into showing that presenting as a girl does make her happy! Her idealisation of Mitsuru in Arena, even saying that she was the type of woman Naoto wanted to become, does a lot to patch up the holes in her character.
Of course since these character moments are confined to spin offs a lot of people won't see them and only get her bad dungeon and mediocre social link.
Personally I like She/They nb Naoto!
