HE'S . im really not good at explaining but oh my god . his self esteem is in the gutter, he constantly lies (compulsive) to please people and/or get rises out of people, he's so… stimulus-seeking and reckless but in a way that's played off as smooth or cool but really at the root of it is a huge disregard for his own safety or life. he sees himself as worthless and unlikeable fundamentally, and is constantly drowning in deceptions and manipulations to appear as the Best version of him that everyone will like the most (or, alternately, provoking and upsetting people/making them hate him on purpose to distance himself and Control The Rate At Which Rejection). so much so that he has an entire song about how much he hates it and feels out of his control (Yobanashi Deceive). he's so so performative and there's HUGE themes of having an unsteady sense of self to the point that most of his iconic imagery is black and white twofaced masks . and at least in my hcs/memory he lies so much that he barely knows if he himself is real anymore or just a fabrication to his core. he has close relationships but mostly it's just with his two siblings and even then he is kind of distant and not well understood by them.

like kgpr's fall from popularity makes me so sad bc it didnt fall off bc it had finished, it fell off bc of executives rushing the franchise along, that led to bad writing choices... like i said, kgpr 'ended' in 2014 with mca showcasing a good ending, but the manga, a key component in even understanding mca's storyline, was only ever finished in 2019. which by then kagepro had already lost a lot of popularity. like....

like it didnt have to be like this :( they couldve taken their time with this. bc, ppl really liked kagepro back then... its hard to state just how immensely popular kagepro was during its peak, in like 2012-2014. it wasnt super mainstream popular like aot or anything, but it was the most popular niche thing at the time. if you knew vocaloid, then you knew of kagerou project. like people take mca for granted nowadays, but do you understand just how significant it is that an extremely indie novel music project thing was popular enough to receive an anime? and also, how jin was one of the earliest producers to make vocaloid songs featuring characters that werent the vocaloid themselves, and how he got so much hate for it at first. and did you know headphone actor was like, a demo song for IA? it was made with IA before IA was publicly released, yet managed to go viral. it was the first IA song to get a million+ views, even before IA was released. and also how ayano's theory of happiness mv holds the record for one of the fastest video to hit a million views on nnd, in less than 5 hours or smth...

like.. kagepro was Big. Bigggg. people loved this story, and they loved these characters. it was taking pixiv and nnd over by storm... like you had to be there to understand just how much people loved novel 5. bc novel 5 was released during kgpr's peak, during Mekakucity Records era, and before the anime. people were losing their minds over the plot revelations tying everything together, and it was the best selling light novel for that month too i think... kano shuuya fanart was everywhereeee. this is how much people liked kagerou project. but this buzz and popularity coincided with the releases of music videos and the anime. and instead of spacing out the production of those two medias, they were all rushed out in such a short amount of time 😞 its just very sad to me, bc you can tell just how passionate jin and sidu and all the other ppl who worked on it were about this project. jin really had a story he wanted to write, and it was a story that many, many people wanted to read about. but so many people dont pay attention to it anymore, or understand it (and to no fault of their own, with how convoluted kgpr had to become to fit in everything), even though it isnt completed... and the mekakucity reload anime is in copyright limbo. its all very sad 😞😞😞😞

Shintaro kisaragi:

Gotta go with Kyle mcCarly here, shintaro is a shut-in who's a complete goddamn nerd, so it only makes sense the nerdiest sounding dub actor actually voices him---he has voices Characters such as Hyde Kido, and shinji matou, along with a few more roles.

Seto kousuke:

Ngl, i have NO idea who would dub seto. I think Chris patton would work, but don't quote me on that If a mekakucity reload dub actually happens. He's voices Characters such as sousuke sagara, and rentaro satomi.

Hibiya amamiya:

This one...was a pain in the ass to actually think of. Per say, i always wondered how hibi would actually sound in the dub, because if they give him a female VA who's pulling off the kid voice way too well---everyone will probably skip the (possible) dub of mekakucity reload for hibi's annoying ass voice. Yuri lowenthal, or Todd haberkorn *could* work for him, but that's if they pull off the higher pitch voice just right. Yuri as yosuke hanamura was pretty damn good, so i don't doubt he couldn't do it.

And the white marshmallow fatass himself, konoha:

It's most likely gonna be Johnny Yong bosch, let's be real. This man is such a popular VA in the dub scene, voicing Characters like Jonathan joestar, tohru adachi, and Ichigo kurosaki, to just name a FEW. Trust me, this guy has been in so many damn dubs it's nearly impossible to NOT find him anywhere.

That's about it for me---might do the kagerou chiccs if this gets enough attention, again, don't quote me on all of this, this is just a big "what if".

ill only talk abt this once so it doesnt bear repeating again and again and again in my fruitless mind but that fucking.....TWEET... where jin says kano would become a cop in the future. a cop. a cop.... yes i think jin is a pretty good writer in spite of various plunders (unfunny misogyny-tinted jokes + lack of a proper ending), but all things considered i think he made a great narrative especially considering how overworked he was like the sheer amount of works churned out by jin and sidu in like a 7 year timespan is not a pretty picture. but still.. A COP.... kano fucking shuuya becoming a cop as an adult.... yeah thats a plunder. obvs jin as the creator understands his character the best (THEORETICALLY) but like this is an instance of idk differing politics or whatever. bc in what world would a child who grew up wary/fearful of welfare states intervening in his family issues become a cop. a child who hid and kept his powers a secret with his friends because they were fearful of possible detainment. a child who runs away to live in some abandoned warehouse instead of contacting authorities when their father figure endangers them. AND also idk how well-developed this aspect of kgpr is but like i think its subtext that saeru-possessed kenjirou had other people working under him so like kano wouldve been privy to the amount of corruption present in systems as well.... if his time at the facility with kido and seto wasnt enough already to show him that. You had woken up on the right side of the bed. The 35 minutes after you woke up were filled with simple joy. No sudden exhaustion, no stale coffee. In fact, you were quite certain today would be a great day.

With gentle ease and quick steps, you navigated through your house and completed your morning routines. With a soft hum, you flung open your closet doors and felt your mood dampen.

There, right in the center, of your school uniform was a stain. You ran your fingers over the stain and wondered what it was. Spilled coffee, mud, or something as silly as spilled ink? Nevertheless, you needed to either clean the stain or grin and bear it.

A quick glimpse towards your alarm clock, and it changed from being late to school or go with a stain. You shook the discomfort from your head and changed into the uniform, ignoring the gross feeling it left on your chest.

Somewhat less happy, you continued onto school. You were eager to finish the day and return to your boyfriend.

But the further the day went, the worse you felt. A car drove through a puddle and splashed you with day-old rainwater, then your classmate accidentally dropped your book, and so on and so forth...

Despite each issue you faced being relatively 'minor' in the scheme of things, you were upset. You dragged yourself to an apartment. Pushing the door open, you collapsed onto the carpet and tried to breathe.

"Huh? Who left the door open?" An all too familiar voice came from the hallway. You raised your head and watched the boy enter. "Ah, (Y/N)!"

For a moment, a split second, time seemed to freeze. All it took was a moment, a split second, for his grin to sink low on his face and his yellow eyes to lose their playful gleam. One moment, a split second, and he was by your side.

"What happened?" His voice was soft - odd you had thought Kano is never quiet - and his hands lingered inches above your arms, his fingers twitching fighting an internal battle between wanting to give comfort and wanting to give you space.

"I-" you forced yourself to speak while you sat up, "I just-"

He kept direct eye contact with you as he removed his jacket and draped it over your shoulders, "Would you like to see a show?"

You sniffled and wiped the tears that were blooming in your eyes, "A show?"

His eyes lit once more and he smiled, "The best show there is."

"I... okay. What show is it?"

He stood and winked at you, "Just stay here! I'll be right back!" He hurried out of the doorway and you waited in silence for a moment, before a black cat stumbled in. The way it waved its tail reminded you of waves rolling away from shore. It paced about the room before sitting right in front of you.

You considered the cat with a keen eye, trying to figure out why it appeared here. Slowly, you raised your hand and scratched the cat’s chin. It purred softly and crawled into your lap.

With a soft smile, you looked into the curious yellow eyes of the cat. "You are strange, Kano." You whispered. The cat smiled and raised its paw to your hand. "However, you were right."

The cat beeped questioningly at you.

You smiled and kissed its ear, "This is quite a great show. You are a fantastic actor, Kano."

Filled with satisfaction and pride, the cat leaned into you. Though his acts of physical affection were always done through a mask, you never minded too much. All you could think of now is how small your worries seemed.

Kano made sure to pamper you the rest of the day, and after a long day of terrible movies, half-done manicures, and lots of venting, he walked you home. It was late, and he often stopped to gaze at the stars.

"What is it?" You asked him.

He smiled softly, "It's nothing. Just... I think Ayano would be happy."

You looked into his eyes, his bright yellow eyes, and for a moment, a split second, you swore you could see a tear slip down his cheeks. For a moment, a split second, he turned to you with a sad smile and spoke in a tone you'd never heard from him before.

"Ahh, (Y/N), I didn't tell you earlier but... you did a good job today."

Under the soft moonlight and twinkling stars, you felt tears fall down your shocked expression and you drew him into a tight hug. He hesitated before resting his hand on your back and leaning into the hug.

"Uwaaa, you're so cute, I can't handle it!" He laughed, and when your sobs turned into gentle laughter, he felt his shoulders relax.

"Way to ruin a moment." You jokingly punched his arm as you pulled away.

"Ah?! You're so cruel!"

The two of you walked to your home, playfully bickering as you went, and when you were tucked in bed you smiled in the dimly lit room.

Maybe it wasn't such an awful day, after all.
