#kanto trade evos
routine vibe check: what’s the best starter pokemon and why are you right (pictures and long paragraphs of evidence welcomed and appreciated)
Gonna get a good grade in vibe check, normal to want and inevitable to achieve because I have objectively correct Pokemon opinions and will block naysayers
OKAY LET'S GO
I decided to do, like, a top 5 list or something, because I'm bad at picking a single favourite of stuff. And then even that overwhelmed me, so I found one of those tier ranking list sites and produced this:
Tumblr media
It was done in less than a minute, so if I wanted to get really picky, I don't know if I would be fully wedded to it (not sure if maybe Sceptile should be one higher) BUT it did help to highlight the important ones.
So!
5. Bulbasaur
It's. Just. So. Nice.
Like you can find cooler, more beautiful, cuter, fancier... there's a whole bunch of ways for a Pokemon to be great. But you will never ever find a nicer Pokemon than Bulbasaur. It's so lovely. Look at it. Look at its face.
Tumblr media
I can't put it higher, because the rest of the line is fairly bland in terms of development. It's good and logical and fun, don't get me wrong, but Ivysaur and Venusaur just look like bigger versions with More Flower and Less Cute rather than creatures in their own right. To be honest, if it weren't a starter requiring a three-stage evolution, you could do away with Ivysaur. Something I don't like about a lot of lazy three-step lines is that the middle step just looks like a transitional mid phase rather than a Proper Creacher, like they were artificially inflating the Pokemon number count. Meanwhile it took us until Paldea to get a Girafarig evo that would actually make the giraffe tall. Madness.
However my first ever Pokemon was a Bulbasaur I called Daffodil, and I have traded him forward onto every single successive generation since. He is, quite literally, my First Ever Pokemon. I love him desperately. I still have him. Not many people still have their First Ever Pokemon. But I do and I love him. So, Bulbasaur gets the fifth spot.
4. Snivy
Again, a victim of the Banal Transitional Middle Evo, but both Snivy and Serperior are incredible, and as Meatloaf took such pains to tell us, two out of three ain't bad.
Tumblr media
But Snivy! It's so snooty! I was super lucky with mine, too, because I beat the 12.8% odds and got a female, and I loved her. Normally the initial baby starters are designed to be cute but Snivy has SO MUCH PERSONALITY, she's great. And the design of Serperior is utterly gorgeous. She keeps the expression, but rather than the Animal Crossing-style snooty-cute vibe of Snivy you get this thousand yard withering stare of an empress whose servant (you) has just turned up dripping mud in her throne room and asked her for money. Her green and gold colour scheme is exquisite. Her filigree design, including her high collar, give off the air of wealth and sophistication befitting her immaculate pedigree. And all this! In a simple snake. Incredible design work, 10 out of 10, no notes.
Tumblr media
Begone, you miserable peasant. Have him boiled.
3. Torchic
Now I'll be real with you, lads, but Pokemon design hit its stride with Hoenn and then got better.
It's partly a fashion thing, of course - you look at some of the Kanto designs and they are remarkably 90s, because that's when the franchise launched. Others are clearly a product of what the 1990's were capable of producing in pixels on an already over-stretched cartridge medium. Like we like to clown on Red and Green/Blue now, but my god, those game designers performed a miracle with Pokemon. Every single square inch of space was used to make that game, and complex designs weren't going to cut it.
(With that said, there is still no excuse for Dragonite.)
And then Johto came about and its Pokedex sucks ass. It's mostly new evolutions for existing Kanto stars, useless babies to inflate the dex number, or poorly thought out single-evos like the inexplicably short Girafarig and the unacceptably dreary Dunsparce (our greatest thanks to Paldea for fixing both of those).
BUT THEN CAME HOENN (trumpets intensify)
And we get habitats! Biomes! A different regional climate, gifting us a brand new area of Pokecology! And therefore a brand new flush of creativity in Pokemon design across the board; less dated, and more inclined to be unique rather than a rehash of Kantonian stuff.
Which brings me nicely to this lad:
Tumblr media
Now, I mean. Just look at him. Fucking hell. Cute starter stage, check. LOOK AT HIM FACE
AND THEN he became, at the time, a brand-new unique typing: Fire/Fighting. I realise that is now the norm for like, half of the Fire starters, but that's because of Torchic, actually. He was super popular. In fact if you ever play Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and you do what my husband and I like to call a Mynci Dave run (use one Pokemon almost exclusively, meaning it gets all the experience points and therefore over-levels to a terrifying degree, allowing you to sweep the game; so named after the noble Primeape we first did this with, Mynci Dave), Torchic is the PERFECT Pokemon to choose, because almost everything is weak to either Fire or Fighting in that region.
Anyway, Combusken is, again, kind of mid (although props for the inverted colour scheme and the fact that it actually does look like a teenager.) But Blaziken, on the other hand... Blaziken is a six foot ninja chicken with wings for hair whose Pokedex entry describes it as able to leap tall peaks in a single bound, a feat it achieves after strengthening its legs by hoofing Geodudes down mountains like they're fucking footballs
Tumblr media
Also an impressive bulge.
My first was called Gilgamesh, and he was fucking great. For a long time, this mad lad was my actual favourite Pokemon, not just starter. Brilliant. Love him. Five stars out of three. King.
2. Fuecoco
It would probably surprise you to know I've not actually used one. I chose Sprigatito, and I do really like Meowscarada, actually. But pretty anthro cat boys have been done in Pokemon quite a bit at this point; cats, dogs and rabbits are over-represented in terms of Poke-taxa. Possibly this is another reason for a toad, a snake and a chicken being 5, 4 and 3 so far (ooh, basilisk ingredients, I've just realised.) They're new and unusual! I like an Eeveelution as much as the next person, but they're a whole family of cat-dog-rabbits, like.
However.
Nintendo has tried its hand at Pokecrocodilians three times (Feraligatr, Krookodile, Skeledirge), and they have gotten so much better at design each time that the three of them are basically a scale proxy for ongoing design improvement. Look, I've made a diagram:
Tumblr media
EXCEPT
(Strap in)
This one is that rare thing: a three step line that deserves to be a three step line. Let's talk Fuecoco first:
Tumblr media
SO CUTE. It's charming, it's charismatic, it's adorable.
It also has hints of its evolutionary end goal, but not like an undeveloped middle evo. It likes singing. The white face hints at the eventual calavera, and it looks a bit like a lil chilli pepper - a ghost pepper, probably in reference to the eventual Fire/Ghost typing. But the colours and shape right now also look a bit reminiscent of a babygro, because this thing is a cute starter. Lookit them teefs. That tuft. Its lovely smile. Beautiful.
And then, at the point you expect it to turn into just the awkward teenage version of the adult, instead we get Crocator:
Tumblr media
Oh boy. Oh there's so much to say. Okay okay:
The region it's from is based on Spain, but this thing is incorporating Hispanic elements from across the board. It's a mariachi in a sombrero, except the sombrero also looks kind of like a ring of Mexican marigolds and kind of like a Catalonian Easter cake called Mona de Pascua that has an egg (or egg-shaped confectionary) in the middle. Body shape and markings look kind of like a piñata. The white face is now on its way to a calavera, with the cheek and nostril markings more defined. And it sings, with its open mouth (also how crocodiles release heat, appropriate for a Fire type) and signified by the mariachi theme.
THAT IS A LOT.
And then it becomes Skeledirge. A Fire/Ghost crocodile.
Now the obvious design here is the calavera and the  Día de Muertos theming, which is part of it. But there are also many examples of crocodile figures in Spanish folkloric ghost stories: the Catalonian Cocollona, the Lizard of Magdalena from Jaén, or the Drac de Na Coca, or even the Cuca - that one is Portuguese, but turns up in both Brasil and the Iberian Peninsula including in parts of Spain. It's got a Gaudi vibe (like Barcelona). It's got an alebrije vibe (like Mexico).
And the bird! Nile crocs have a cleaning symbiosis with Egyptian plovers; it also sits at the tip of the snout where male gharials have a sort of bulbous bit to help them make sounds (the singing thing).
But this is what the bird does when Skeledirge uses Torch Song:
youtube
It becomes a microphone, then grows in size and attacks the opponent in Phoenix form. Phoenix: Fire/Ghost. Resurrected from the ashes.
Quite simply, your fave could never.
5. Rowlet
My god. (My god)
Tumblr media
gasp
Look at this lovely creacher. He is so round and so soft and so lovely. He looks like that baby Yoda meme. He looks like that cat that someone's landlord said they would make an exception for because he looks very polite. Look!!! At his lil bow tie!!! He is a smartly dressed young man and he is kind and he is... well, a bit vacant behind the eyes. A himbo, if you will. But he is all the better for that. What a lovely owl.
He looks a little like a barn owl, perhaps, and those were imported to Hawai'i, where Rowlet is from. But I think he looks a little like a Pueo owl, and given that he will eventually be a Ghost type, that seems right - pueos are one of the physical forms assumed by ʻaumākua in Hawai'ian culture, as I understand it.
And then, hang onto your tits, lads, because this is another banger - THE MIDDLE EVOLUTION IS ITS OWN DESIGN!!! (confetti cannons)
I said earlier that boring middle evos are like just awkward teenagers of the adults. Here, I present to you, a very deliberate Awkward Teenager, in Dartrix:
Tumblr media
IT'S A DANDY
I love him I love him I love him
He plays with his fringe and if you touch it without permission he has a tantrum. God, he's so charismatic. Also, that fringe further suggests the pueo - they have pronounced outer rims around their facial disks like that. Look at his bow tie and tail coat. So smart and handsome
This one is so good that it could be the final evo. This is actually my issue with the Delphox line - Braixen is amazing, and then it becomes the bland boredom of Delphox. Braixen should have been the final stop. Here, Dartrix is much the same - good enough to be a high-quality end goal.
Where they differ is that Decidueye is better again.
Tumblr media
IT SHOOTS ARROWS MADE OF ITS OWN QUILLS
Also, fun fact - This line is the only starter to change secondary typing. Dartrix is part Flying; but on evolving a second time into Decidueye, it switches to Grass/Ghost. In this evolution, it's definitely mostly a pueo, so the ʻaumākua reference is IN, but actually barn owls also have their associations with the dead in various cultures.
The crown of feathers around its head are also reminiscent of an ayaigasa - a hat worn by Japanese samurai archers. And yet! AND YET!
It still has its lil bow tie look. Bigger now, more of a cravat; but there it is.
A perfect Pokemon, and a perfect evolutionary line. No notes.
Anyway, thank you for this chance to waste three and a half hours writing this essay

okay i just talked to every NPC in veilstone because it's been a long time and man sinnoh's NPCs are peak, at least out of the 2D games i feel like they provide the most humor and the most random lore tidbits and stuff. i love this region. i'm going to talk about it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
first off sinnoh is full of little things like this. random dialogue/flavor text that ties back to the mythos of the region. i love how widespread the sinnoh myths are
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm also obsessed with when there's two NPCs that link together like this. you talk to one and you move on and then you talk to another and you're like oh! lmao. by the way the rage candy bars being here is cool because sinnoh is canonically connected to johto through the sinjoh ruins and the rage candy bars are from johto, which means they're imported and sold here. in general i'm obsessed with the locations in pokemon that have special treats associated with them, like the pewter crunchies of pewter city in kanto, or the lava cookies from lavaridge in hoenn. iconic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
btw don't worry lady literally everyone sucks at making poffins. unless you have four players it's pretty much impossible to make poffins that are better than the storebought ones. good luck getting four people with rare berries who are good at the minigame to play with you, ESPECIALLY in 2023 jesus christ. the basement poffins are OPTIMAL
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway in speaking of linking NPCs, these two - i wonder if the dialogue in the french version of this game is turned into english? they did that for lt. surge's french pikachu trade, the french versions of HGSS make the pikachu english instead lol. but anyway as usual it's very fascinating to me how much pokemon loves to drop foreign language in its titles, and fittingly i know a lot of people with english as their second language got interested in learning english from a young age due to wanting to play pokemon. how many kids do you think got interested in french because of dialogue like this. the girl even implies what the meaning of his words is
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
veilstone isn't short on game hints either, useless to me now as an adult longterm pokemon player who knows all this stuff already but still really cool to see. if sinnoh is your first time playing pokemon, those hints on trade evos and stuff are always appreciated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
of course, funny dialogue too that got a wheeze out of my nose, not uncommon for pokemon NPC dialogue SDKFSFDK some of this shit takes me so offguard it's like extra funny
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like GIRL ISN'T THAT WHAT A PARASOL IS FOR????
edit: my DUMB ASS (lighthearted) has been reminded that parasols are for the sun and are NOT an umbrella equivalent. okay she makes more sense now LOOL
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also LOOKER JUSTIFYING HIS GAMBLING :skull emoji: this shit is taking me out. see this is useful because it's like oh galactic is really all over this city huh. not only their massive building but they have their logo in the fucking slot machines, they probably have some amount of ownership over this place like team rocket did over the celadon game corner. but also it's funny because SDFSDFK
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OH AND MAYLENE'S DAD IS JUST... HERE? generic NPC. generic sprite. no name. he's just here. maylene's dad. you know, one of the gym leaders. help girl
anyways i'm aware i basically just posted most of the dialogue in veilstone city verbatim but I JUST THINK IT'S INTERESTING! I MISS WHEN POKEMON GAMES WERE FULL OF DIALOGUE LIKE THIS AHHHH i have more to say about the galactic lore but i'm running out of image space and i need to use the bathroom and get some food so i'll post about that a little later

Hey, A YouTuber Put Together Trade Codes For SV
Uhhhh...  Austin John Play I guess?  IDK, it was being shared on Twitter is where I saw it lol.  Seems like the same was done for BDSP?
Basically, you enter the 8-digit code and hope to get matched with somebody who’s got the opposite offering, the 8-digit code is the same for both X for Y and Y for X so you might end up with X for X happening or Y for Y--if so just quit out and try again.  The codes are for starters, version exclusives, and Ditto to try and swap for the Masuda Method (again, just quit out if the summary of the other Ditto says it’s the same language as yours).  (Video describing this is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqeuYcwF1xU)
Images and text version of what’s in the images are both below the cut for length, also be advised the second image (and thus text summary) contains name spoilers for certain endgame Pokemon but does not show their images.
updated to include both DLC code lists.
Updated again to include different codes I've found in use--I would assume the community in general decided to change how they were formatted to account for all the Pokémon added in the DLC and for ease of numbering. This does, however, mean that some codes are a crapshoot between "are you getting a partner using the original lists or the newer lists which assigns different pokemon to the same codes previously passed around".
To make use of these codes, enter the 8 digits as your Link Code. Keep in mind that, aside from trade evolutions, these generally are "any pokemon of this evolutionary line" so you might see somebody offering an evolved version rather than the basic pokemon.

I don't have a great ending place here but despite not thinking I'd have much time I forgot how quickly midgame Johto goes.
First off, I decided to fill the holes in ny tean with Logan and Puffpuff.
Tumblr media
Forretress is gonna be a tank. Doesn't learn great stall moves in this gen, not until I can pop over to Kanto and get Toxic from Janine but that's okay; his Attack isn't actually that bad, either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Puffpuff's job is to learn elemental punches for coverage. Her Special Attack isn't great, but I'm hoping her HP will give her the bulk she needs to survive long enough to take advantage of the Super Effective coverage, especially when I get to Claire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, I gave Pinkie a Bitter Berry to cure Confusion from Dynamic Punch and, whilr Chuck's luck was ABSURDLY good (he must have hit like 6 Dynamic Punches) Pinkie resists them well, and Zarovich picked up the slack when she got too low.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not much to say about Pryce. A newly evolved Adam and Pinkie swept with like 20 total damage taken between them. Pryce is not hard, but his level cap (31 following Chuck's 30 but Jasmine's 35!) meant I needed to tackle him next.
Tumblr media
Then not much to say here, either. Cravel is close to evolving (UPR made the Gen I trade evos happen at level 37 IIRC) but even as a Graveler, she smashed the Magnemites and Pinkie one-shot Steelix.
Progress is being restored but JESUS CHRIST early gen learnsets suck. New team members from this point forward are being decided based on who gets a STAB move above 40 base power before level 45 as much as type diversity or stat niche.

top five pokemon ?
( you're SO COOL btw )
YOU'RE cool!! i have been in such a pokemon mood with all these scarlet & violet announcements, greavard is so so cute and i can't wait to see if it has an evo!
nidoking has been my number 1 favorite for so many years, i had one on my team in my crystal game and it just kind of became a tradition to catch one in each of my games. nidoqueen is cool too but not top 5 i don't think
bulbasaur... the lad. i always picked bulbasaur in kanto and my brother would pick charmander. and venusaur is a super cool evolution and poison is my favorite type!!
walrein has been a favorite of mine since i was a kid because i had one in my ruby game that got stolen while i was at school. for some reason he was named carpetsack and he was my beauty contest champion. i shiny hunted an alpha shiny walrein in pla and named him carpetsack, i'm so pleased
scolipede, just what a cool design! big horse bug! my brother once traded me a random venipede named ugly slug and i put him on my final team so i've got a soft spot for them
suicune, my favorite legendary. i really love all of the legendary dogs but i'm basic, suicune is the best. lowkey always related to eusine, i felt bad for him!

Since I didn’t manage to get any Sandshrews during Global Go Fest 2023 (my main reason for buying the $20 ticket) it looks like that’s gonna be my first shiny I’ll be looking to trade my spare shinies for, once I get my Live Dexes figured out.
It’s either finding someone to trade with who’d like to exchange two Sandshrews, or one Sandshrew and one Sandslash (Kanto, I can hunt Alolan in USUM) or I pay like $80 cad for a copy of let’s go Pikachu just to hunt them lol
The Oddish line (except Bellossom) may be my second trade shinies, but I’m waiting on Oddish research day first to see what I can get.
I have the ability to find every other Kanto shiny through games I have with decent odds (USUM, ScarVi, and Legends). If anyone is interested possibly in shiny trades in the future I’ll be making a post with all my friend codes and I’ll pin it. Right now, for these two the timeline may be as long as the Scarvi DLC release as if they’re added there I’ll prefer to catch them myself. I’m going Gen by Gen so I’ll be focusing on Johto mons once I’m done Kanto and so on, but even if I do get most of my shinies myself I’ll still want to give my spares to people who want them instead of sending them into wondertrade. As long as you’re not picky about what game they come from (I currently have six spare Squirtles one from Let’s Go Eevee and five from GO for example). I do have someone who gets first dibs on any of my spares but they’re particular with their Pokémon whereas I like every one.
This is mostly just a ramble to myself but if you may be interested in the possibility of future shinies keep an eye out for when I gather up my friend codes. I’ll also have spare non shiny legendaries and trade evos to give too, I’ll also probably pull a few boxes of Feebas up from ORAS as well since it became super rare again after those games.

You know, I find it rather dumb that Pokemon HG/SS didn't allow you to get the evolutions that required you to level up in a specific area, forcing you to trade from Sinnoh. I get if they didn't want them in Johto to be consistent with most of the Gen 4 evos being unavailable until postgame, but they could've at least had them in Kanto. Power Plant could've been for Magnezone and Probopass, Moss Rock could've been in Viridian Forest, and Ice Rock could've been in Seafoam Islands.
Hahaha yeah. It feels par the course for remakes back then.
Like in FRLG it don't matter how much Golbat loves you, that evolution to Crobat aint happening until you get national dex because... reasons? Arceus up there slamming the B button for you.

Alakazam mega’d so Machamp could Gmax.
I do like that they’re balanced with one each. And Golem managed to get a regional variant. Balance for most of the Kanto trade evos.
Meanwhile, we have GENGAR, who got a Mega, a Gmax, AND is now on Ash’s team. Because, you know, Gengar wasn’t popular already. Smug smirking ghost knows they got that popularity too. Stupidly adorable twerp.

i really enjoy how the manga presents these new game features as mysterious unknown phenomena but equally shows how rapidly people adapt to these findings.

While I was remembering about the Galarian Slowpoke line, I realized something about 'mons that had an evolution added in a later Generation
Using Slowpoke as an example, generally to make a distinction between "normal" and regional forms, the "normal" versions will usually be referred to by the region they were introduced in, so Kantonian Slowpoke
But what about Slowking? It was introduced in Generation 2, the Johto region, but it's an evolution of a Pokemon introduced in Generation 1, the Kanto region, and in FRLG, you can evolve Slowpoke into Slowking [albeit only after you get the National Dex from Prof. Oak, and this applies to all post-Gen1 evos [or, I think it does, I don't know if trade evolutions are a special case], which is really baffling for 'mons like Crobat because your Golbat will start evolving and then just randomly stop because ???]
So is "normal" Slowking Kantonian, or Johtonian?

I’m getting into the world of ROM hacking with the end goal of updating the SoulSilver engine with the Pokemon Crystal storyline... which doesn’t sound super hard so hopefully I can do it

im annoyed that you can't transfer Pokemon caught in other games outside of Let's Go into said games, even if they are Gen I pokemon. I was hoping to get the shiny charm cause im missing all the trade evos and the version exclusives.
Also there was supposed to be a GTS? Or was that just a rumor. Right now it's a little weird that you can transfer any Pokemon to Pokemon Home only to have a majority of them locked down and unable to go to games. FYI you are only allowed to transfer Kanto and Alola starters to Sword/Shield.
Well at least i completed my Galar dex finally.

Pokemon Changes I’d Make
I’ve come up with some changes I would make for Pokemon after scouring the internet and because I had an idea of only numbering pokemon biological lines instead of each pokemon individually. 1) to save on numbers, and 2) I can put Pichu next to Pikachu without messing with the National Dex order which divides pokemon by region, so an entirely different system than mine, which divides by biological line in order of discovery of one of it’s members.
under the readmore, I will go through the list of most significant changes that I would make if I were in charge of pokemon
0) Numbering Pokemon by Family Line instead of Individually in Pokedex
Basically it’s what it says, it would look like this on paper:
001 = Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur = Grass/Poison
002 = Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard = Fire/Flying
003 = Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise = Water/Steel
oh yeah, btw, Blastoise is Steel type because Duh (don’t care if Empoleon did it, Fire. Fighting. That is all.)
001 Bulbasaur Ivysaur Venusaur 002 Charmander Charmeleon Charizard 003 Squirtle Wartortle Blastoise 004 Caterpie Metapod Butterfree 005 Weedle Kakuna Beedrill 006 Pidgey Pidgeotto Pidgeot 007 Rattata Raticate 008 Spearow Fearow 009 Ekans Arbok  010 Pichu Pikachu Raichu....
So basically like this all, all the way down the list for each Pokefamily
1) Ditto, Mew and Mewtwo have the same numbered family line.
I know none evolve into the other and only Ditto can breed, but Mewtwo is canonically of the same dna as Mew. Mewtwo is a genetically modified singular unqiue instance of a Mew. Original games go so far as to straight up saw Mew gave birth to Mewtwo.
Ditto being related to Mew and Mewtwo genetically is also a strongly held fan theory that I believe in, and well, this is called the changes I’d make to Pokemon if I could, and this is what I’d do
(Though Ditto would of course be move ahead to end of the Main Kanto group to be with Mew, rather then moving Mew and Mewtwo back)
2) Nidoran (F) and Nidoran (M) are now a single pokemon called Nidoran.
Their gendered forms are now the same thing as Meowstics, with male and females having drastically different sprites.
I know that F and M Nido’s also have different moves and stats and that’s important to preserve, and I say, this is fine to keep as well. Pokemon change their stats, moves, typings, abilities, all the time for TEMPORARY forme changes, heck even held items. Rotom, Deoxys, Genesect, Burmy/Wormadam, Aegislash, Shaymin, Castform, fucking Cosplay Pikachu etc If those things can change for temporary forme changes, they can be different for permanent gendered forme changes like Nidoran. I don’t see any conflict there.
Then female Nidorans evolve into Nidorinas, and male Nidorans evolve into Nidorinos.
Also Nidorina’s and Nidoqueen’s can breed because it’s stupid that they can’t.
3) Male Miltank eggs just become Tauros.
There’s no reason for Miltank and Tauros to not work like Illumise and Volbeat. This is a biological dex also, so just like Illumise and Volbeat are considered the same biological family, so are Miltank and Tauros. Miltank appears with Tauros in it’s slot.
4) Plusle and Minun are a pair/in the same family group, and can produce eachother’s eggs, but not exactly determined by gender.
Two of the same type breeding will give a Plusle
So Plusle+Plusle or Minun+Minun = Plusle
Two of the opposite type breeding will give a Minun
So Plusle+Minun = Minun
They otherwise keep their gender ratios and breeding group, so they can also breed with other pokemon, and the baby will be of the mother as per usual rules.
5) Oranguru and Passimian also share biology, but also in a non gendered way like Plusle and Minun.
Basically, either can be male or female and can breed with other pokemon, and have children based on the mother in the usual way.
But if an Oranguru and Passimian breed together, no matter which is female, If the offspring has higher attack than special attack, it becomes a Passimian. If it has higher special attack than attack, it becomes an Oranguru.
This is partly because I think it made sense given their lore and designs, and also because I thought it’d be a neat throwback to the gender determination system of the original crystal game, but in this case it determines species/abilities/lore etc
then if the attack and special attack tie, it just becomes whoever the mother was as normal.
6) Sigilyph gets demoted from being a unique pokemon, to merely a Forme change of Unown, akin to Wishiwashi’s schooling forme, but different.
I never really liked the idea of Unown evolving, but also knew it was related to Sigilyph, somehow, just didn’t really know how.
then Sun/Moon came along and along came Wishiwashi and it’s unique forme type. With the way Unown have always been portrayed to always school together like that just like in the Entei Movie, it was perfect!
When an Unown is at low health, in order to protect itself, many more Unown school together around it and psychically merge itself into a stronger being, in order to fight off the attacker.
So unlike Wishiwashi who starts out as many and weakens to being a single one, Unown starts out single, and upon a suitable threat, psychically calls upon its brethren for help as a last ditch resort. Unown also warp reality itself as they please, so it’s not outlandish to say a bunch of them could merge themselves together into a single temporary physical forme.
So thus the name Sigilyph is forever removed. It’s model just becomes a Guardian forme Unown.
7) Phione also loses it’s name/gets demoted to being a forme change of Manaphy like Sigilyph.
The Phione sprite/model is simply the Warm Seas forme of Manaphy, while the OG Manaphy sprite/model is now the Cold Seas forme.
There’s no reason why it couldn’t have been this in the first place. Phione has no reason to be a separate pokemon from Manaphy, it just doesn’t.
How it changes forme in-game can have something to do with the weather/terrain changes because idc.
8) Carbink evolves into Diancie.
This one, I’m unsure if I should remove Diancie from being legendary, or just make it so the item that evolves Carbink into Diancie is a one use only key item and you can’t get more/trade more/use it again.
But it’s one of the two, I think the one use key item is probably best though. No legendary deserves to be demoted (excepy Phione, but its fine because I merged it with Manaphy) and to keep Dianice special, the item must only be able to be used once, can’t get traded another one by any means.
9) Adjustments to pokemon evolution lines:
I have no justification for these other than I want them. Nothing crazy, just sticking some lines together, you may or may not disagree, this is fine also.
Dusnparce evolves into Drampa.
Linoone evolves into Zangoose.
Arbok evolves into Seviper.
Luvdisc evolves into Alomomola.
Minior evolves into either Solrock or Lunatone by Sun/Moonstone of course.
All Eevee evo’s are by evolution Stone
Flareon - Fire Stone
Jolteon - Thunder Stone
Vaporeon - Water Stone
Espeon - Sun (Dawn) Stone (Really these should just be the same Sun stone..)
Umbreon - Moon (Dusk) Stone (ditto as above. but Moon stone)
Glaceon - Ice Stone
Leafeon - Leaf Stone
Sylveon - Shiny Stone
10) And then, Pokemon Type Matchup changes.
This should probably be it’s own post, but fuck it, I can give the quick rundown
Rock and Ground type get merged into a single Earth type.
Sound type gets introduced to keep same number of types and because it’s long past due.
All type colors are as follows:
Tumblr media
All other types get some re balancing in terms of type matchups
So, each type has 6 factors:
A type that they are good at attacking (Effective), bad at attacking (Futile), and totally ineffective towards (Useless)
and, types that they are good at defending against (Resist), bad at defending against (Weak), and totally immune to (Immune)
I re-balanced each type to make sure they have no more than 5 in each of those categories, without changing what made each type so unique and useful (attempting anyways) but it was easy enough, it was really more about removing extraneous resistances that didn’t really need to exist, which naturally removed a lot of ineffectivess, and then splattering a few actual effectives around.
Does this unintentionally make some types stronger purely because they have high base stat attacking moves?
Yes. but that problem shouldn't be solved by making types weaker, it should be solved by giving all the types effective attacking options. That way, all the types feel good and effective to use. I think it’s better that way, especially because it encourages the system of “using your favorite pokemon to win” and giving a lot more equally viable options for battle, instead of having a small few stand out from the crowd and trample everyone.
First I’ll explain Earth and Sound as they are new:
Earth Type is This:
Effective: Fire, Electric, Poison, Sound
Futile: Grass, Earth, Bug
Useless: Flying
Resist: Fire, Poison, Earth, Sound
Weak: Water, Grass, Steel, Ice
Immune: Electric
Earth is Ground and Rock combined (more like Rock enfolded into Ground but eh, some parts of Rock are still there)
Earth pretty much takes Ground’s strengths at attacking/defending, but takes Rock’s weakness against Steel. The thought being “Well, I had to merge them somehow, Ground is very powerful and needs some balance, need a good weakness, and the idea of a shovel shoveling Earth and tearing it up with manmade tools seemed to make sense”
kept the immunities and uselessness to keep that balance intact, removed references to Normal and Fighting since Fighting has nothing to do with Earth really, and Normal types often live/burrow in the ground so could be good or bad.
Gave an effectiveness against Sound since the earth absorbs soundwaves and weakens them.
Sound Type is This:
Effective: Flying, Steel, Psychic
Futile: Earth, Water, Grass
Useless: Sound
Resist:  Flying, Steel, Psychic
Weak:  Earth, Water, Grass
Immune: Sound
Sound is interesting and a bit unique, due to it’s ephemeral nature, the types it is effective against, are also the types that it naturally resists. As are the types it is ineffective against, are also the types it is weak to
Sound travels best through the Air, Flying is here standing in as an “Air/Wind” type, and the idea is that Sound powerful enough to attack just CUTS right through Flying types.
Sound is amplified by echoes, but Steel is especially prone to that, Steel basically helpless to do anything except amplify Sound, strengthening it, but just like vibrations strong enough to maim, are strong enough to shatter, the things that echo the loudest are also the things most prone to being torn apart by vibrations.
and then Psychic is simply because of how Sound is the number one way to interrupt concentration, and no amount of mental prowess can fight against that. It fits into Psychic’s weakness all being common fears, by screaming being the most common response associated with fear, and also sudden loud jumpscare noises.
Sound is weak to Water, Earth and Grass, and also is Futile against them for similar reasons across the board, bodies of water, wood, ground, boulders etc all absorb and disperse soundwaves very well without damaging themselves, unlike Steel which amplifies Sound.
Then finally, Sound is totally immune to, and useless against, itself. Sound is Sound is Sound. If there’s loud things happening, more loud things just add to the chaos and the volume. Sound cannot overpower itself, only add to it’s own strength.
The Pokemon that were Rock/Ground are now Pure Earth type, those that were Type/Rock or Type/Ground are now Type/Earth. Other than those conversions no changes were made to make something Earth type that wasn’t already once Rock or Ground type.
As for Sound type, something to make note of, is that “Sound” encompasses more an idea of “Music” or “Rhythm” where both singing and dancing but also shockwave and vibration are encompassed into “Sound” type, to allow for a base in both special and physical moves, and to encompass all expression of Noise.
So, the following are now Pure Sound Types:
Whismur, Loudred, Exploud
Spinda
Chingling, Chimecho
Audino
Cincinno, Mincinno
Eevee evolution that’s pure Sound, Probably Melodeon or Vocaleon or Harmoneon (Evolves upon using Noise Stone)
The Following are Primarily Sound type with a secondary Typing:
Igglybugg, Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff = Sound/Fairy
Ludicolo = Sound/Grass (Noise Stone, not Water Stone)
Kricketot, Kricketune = Sound/Bug
Chatot = Sound/Flying
Woobat, Swoobat = Sound/Flying
Meloetta = Sound/Psychic or Fighting
Noibat, Noivern = Sound/Dragon
Pikipek, Trumbeak, Toucannon = Sound/Flying
Jangmo-o, Hakamo-o, Kommo-o = Sound/Fighting
and then the following are Primarily one type, but with a secondary Sound type:
Bellosom = Grass/Sound (Noise Stone, not Sun Stone)
Politoed = Water/Sound (Noise Stone, not king’s rock)
Voltorb, Electrode = Electric/Sound
Happiny, Chansey, Blissey  = Normal/Sound
Munchlax, Snorlax = Normal/Sound
Yanma, Yanmega = Bug/Sound
Misdreavus, Mismagius = Ghost/Sound
Snubbull, Granbull = Fairy/Sound
Poochyena, Mightyena = Dark/Sound
Ludicolo = Grass/Sound (Noise Stone)
Ralts, Kirlia, Gardevoir = Psychic/Sound
Skitty, Delcatty = Normal/Sound (Noise Stone, not Moonstone)
Electrike, Manectric = Electric/Sound
Wailmer, Wailord = Water/Sound
Spoink, Grumpig = Psychic/Sound
Vibrava, Flygon = Earth/Sound
Bronzor, Bronzong = Metal/Sound
Tympole, Seismotoad, Palpitoad = Water/Sound
Maractus = Grass/Sound
Klink, Klang, Kinklang = Metal/Sound
Litleo, Pyroar = Fire/Sound
Primarina = Water/Sound
Oricorio = Fire or Psychic or Electric or Ghost/Sound
As for the balanced type matchup, you can see them all in this picture here:
Tumblr media
you read it like the Type on the left is attacking the Type at the top
so, Fire (Left) attacks Bug (Top) and it’s green! So Super Effective and etc.
I won’t explain it all, because I feel like the chart is pretty self explanatory
aaaand, I think that’s all the changes I’d make to Pokemon itself.
I might come up with more later, but these are thing I want to see in Pokemon

Explore the all new Alola, now filled with Ultra Beasts and more mysteries! Your partner this time is none other than the sweet little Lillie and the other Aether members, who return from Kanto after a failed attempt at restoring Lusamine back to her normal self. Lillie's starter will be the one that has a type advantage over yours, a-la classic rival style. Her parties include Starter, Alolan Vulpix, Zeraora, (Wishiwashi/Bounsweet/Salandit), an Ultra Beast and Nebby.
Features:
Zeraora, Marshadow, UBs and many other NEW POKEMON such as Alolan Voltorb and Machamp are now available in the wild.
The mythicals now have similar stats to those of a regular Pokemon, making them not OP for regular playthrough.
All gen1-6 starters are now available at Route 1. While their second evos are available outside of Po Town.
Almost all regular Pokemon are available in the wild. And some of them, for example,
Combee, Cherubi and Wimpod, now have better movesets and stats. Oh, Cherubi is now a Grass/Fire type too.
By recreating the extreme condition in the Ultra Spaces, you can force certain Pokemon to evolve into Ultra Beasts!
Also, all Pokemons who require trades or held items to evolve now evolve mostly via level ups!
