I'm literally crying because of the dbh ending I got... I thought I learned how to suppress my emotions enough to play this game after all the bad endings I've already gotten playing 100% through the flowcharts of this but no, no I definitely haven't

Oooof. Did a pretty big deviation (pun not intended) from my last play through, and damn if I’m not feeling conflicted.
Last game I had Connor go to the tv station roof, found Simon, wasn’t feeling like dealing with QTEs so he just stayed behind cover and Simon got shot to all heck. Instantly regretted killing off Simon, so I went back to check point and had Connor stay downstairs and interrogate the androids/find the deviant.
Soooo ~officially~, Connor got his butt whooped, managed not to die, then shot the deviant to avoid massacre. My whole heart-eyeing father/son relationship between Connor and Hank self got all d’aawwww at Hank being proud of Connor saving everyone. And Simon survived to get a reunion hug from Markus. Two things in plus column for me.
This time, I was tempted to do that again but also having seen clips of what connecting to Simon does to Connor, I was like yeeeeeah I kinda want to do that.......sorry Simon :(.
(Though I will say....I don’t think I’ll be sorry to not have his stance/advice on things. Like look dude, I’ve got Josh as angel on the shoulder, North as the devil on the shoulder.....you being all “nope, let’s not do anything” kiiiiiiinda made me wish North or Josh could slap him* and scream “pick a side, bitch!”.......still love the blonde sweetie though!)
(*though I guess Josh wouldn’t slap him....he’d probably try to talk him into having a firm stance on one of their sides.....all while North is like “hey, that’s cool, I can slap him twice for both of us!!” lmao).
So, his advice in latter parts of the story not withstanding, I am seriously regretting Simon being dead.....but also kinda not so regretting the gut punch and narrative power of traumatized Connor, and Hank looking at him all concerned dad like.....ooooof yes give me those dad!Hank feeels!
I’ve become trash for conflicted!Connor. Both outcomes I’ve done so far have definitely had that in spades. Fear of dying conflicted!Connor definitely has a bigger oooof right in the feels punch, especially with Bryan Dechart’s shakey voice line delivery, so now I’m conflicted and weighing pro & cons of whether the greater punch at the cost of dead Simon/no Simon and Markus reunion bro hug, is 👍🏼 or 👎🏼 for me. Hmmm.
I had also done another deviation earlier with Markus—last time he let Leo keep pushing him and Carl died, this time had Markus push Leo. Pro of first game—Markus crying over Carl and calling him dad, hooo boy was not expecting that punch to the gut. So, this time no Markus calling him dad....though it being replaced by the gut punch of Carl sad/worried/etc about Leo yet also still wanting Markus to save himself, plus picking the beg dialogue and Markus all “I don’t want to leave you” to Carl.....yup that was big impact. I’ll wait and see what kind of feels going down this path gives before deciding which side I like more.
I will say I am kinda liking the headcanoning on how that affects Markus actions more this way than before. No fighting back Markus+peaceful route felt very “I’m a good boy, always and forever, yessir”, whereas Markus whooping Leo+peaceful route is making me headcanon Markus like “I let my anger take over, it had a horrible consequence. I can never do that again” (not to mention kinda salty that Leo had no comeuppance and got away with lying and blaming Markus. Him getting his ass handed to him this time was definitely satisfying). And that’s kinda more interesting. But again, I’ll see how rest of story plays out on this path before deciding which I like more.
I haven’t done as much of big changes with Kara. Small change in Stormy Night where she got to Alice before Todd and they went out the window originally, this time she and Todd fought and she and Alice ran out the front door.
She was also sliiightly more “ends justify means” ish this time in Fugitives. Last time she stole wire cutters from the store and they got into the abandoned house/met Ralph. This time, stole the clothes from laundromat, used Alice as a distraction in store and stole money, and they ended up in the motel. So, meh, not too huge change on her side of things. Everything else so far I’ve played out the same. We’ll see if I decide to switch things up later. Downside is I do kinda miss not having met Ralph. He was an interesting character.
Im just realizing I’ve used the phrase gut punch, or variation of it, a loooot here lol. I kinda feel like that’s this game’s tag line.
