A bit of an unconventional title for me: ya mystery novel The Cheerleaders.
I hated it.
If you want a subversion you’d better make sure it’s more interesting than the premise it would be subverting

REVIEW: The Darkest Corners by Kara Thomas
3/5 ⭐⭐⭐
This is a mystery book that's not your typical fast-paced YA stuff. It's more mature and character-driven, focusing on lies, truths, and the role of the media in crimes. At first, I have to admit it starts slow, but that didn't bother me much.
The story takes some time to set the scene and develop the relationships between the characters. Those complex characters and relationships end up adding depth to the story later on, turning it into more than just a typical "whodunnit?"
The story revolves around Tessa, who has been avoiding her dark past ever since she helped put a serial killer behind bars as a child. But circumstances force her to return to Fayette, Pennsylvania, where it all happened, and her past starts coming back to haunt her. There are twists and suspense throughout the tale, that show you can't trust anyone.
I didnt expect romance here, but usually there is some in a YA mystery. However, there is strong portrayal of friendship between Tessa and Callie, two teenage girls who've been through a lot together.
Truth and lies are recurring themes in the story, and the way they're presented keeps you questioning everything until the end.
Overall it was a good read, I enjoyed it. I think I just wanted / expected more of a classic YA mystery with all the fun that author Karen M McManus writes.

You can bury the past, starve it of light and oxygen, but it will still find a way to survive.

I am once again suggesting that Little Monsters needs a limited series adaptation where we have a montage of Bailey's growing obsession and resentment as Taylor Swift's Don't Blame Me plays in the background

Deadly Little Sins by Kara Taylor
Challenge #34 ~ “ A book with an academic setting or with a teacher that plays an important role.”
★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆
My opinion in three sentences:
Why do YA trilogies always seem to have a lacklustre ending? The characterisation, and as a result the tone, were rather muddled in this one, which gave it an entirely different vibe to the prequels (and not in a good way). To top it all off, the plot wasn’t as strong as the others either, and I couldn’t buy into the out-of-the-blue ending.
(Without spoiling anything) the best bit:
The loose ends were all wrapped. However bizarrely or unconvincingly, Thomas uses this final book in the trilogy to actually resolve plot points and conclude the series as a whole. In such a way, it proves satisfactory, and therefore as a way to close the chapter, I wouldn’t necessarily say “don’t read”, I’d just add the preface that it’s worth being aware that it doesn’t read like anything else in the series.
A warning for the book:
This felt rather rough around the edges, as if an early draft or one the author wasn’t fully invested in (something that happens to us all – we are only human). The protagonist was off, which in turn affected both the tone and the plot balance. The ending came seemingly out of nowhere, and there were several characters (including a love interest) mentioned a couple of times only to never return – something I’d usually expect to be resolved during edits, especially given the strong standards from books one and two edit-wise. In short, the storyline may round things off, but the quality of the writing overall rates rather poorly.

THIS BOOK LEGIT GAVE ME SHIVERS
Kara Thomas, you have written the best murder mystery I have ever read. Tied with a few others.
The cheerleaders is creepy and funny. a murderous high school drama. When i found out who the murderer was i couldn't sleep. because seriously what if my (nonexistent) boyfriend is the murderer?! its not even like its never happened now!
As for the whole 'five girls lied five girls died' everyone lies. and everyone dies eventually *coughs* dumbledore * So im not in love with that bit
it is super catchy thoughhhh.
Monica is epic

(I have both of these which i usually don’t do, but I’d read a chapter sampler of book one, and then had a brain fart, thought I’d read the whole book, bought book two and then finally realized “hey wait”...)

Batfam fanon stuff I hate
Asian Tim/Hispanic Jason from white people (Blasian Tim not included)
"Tim killed hundreds of people"
Cullen being one of Bruce's kids (have they literally ever had a private conversation. Have they met.)
Bruce being a business idiot and Lucius basically running WE for him
Cass being completely mute
Tim hating Dick and never forgiving him for the Robin thing
Damian never repenting, changing his personality and morals, and becoming close enough to Tim to proudly admit he's his brother
Dick not having any relationship to Kara Danvers (THEY. ARE. FRIENDS. WITH. ROMANTIC. TENSION.)
Babs being Cass's mom (I've talked at length about the sexist undertones here). Sisterly relationships are not "less important" than motherly relationships, and unless I'm missing something, I've never been able to find a single instance of Cass calling Babs her mom
BatJokes, Bru/Harvey, BatMask (specifically when the author has it canon in their AU that one of them seriously hurt his kids like in canon)
SlaDick. I just...don't like it. I really don't.
Jason and Tim never making amends (honestly don't know why everyone wants Tim to hate his siblings lol)
Duke innocent uwu boy
LADY SHIVA NOT FUCKING EXISTING
Edit: I was wrong about Cass not calling Babs mom, and someone corrected that. Thank you for correcting me, and I apologize for putting that on this list.
I still hate it very much, but its canon. So it shouldn't be on this list.
Also: these are personal opinions. I am not the arbiter of fanfiction. Write whatever you want forever I do not care. These are things I dislike. Don't take it personally.
