This man taught me how to stay hopeful, because I now know that hopelessness is the enemy of justice. Hope allows us to push forward, even when the truth is distorted by the people in power. It allows us to stand up when they tell us to sit down, and to speak when they say be quiet.
If we can look at ourselves closely, and honestly, I believe we will see that we all need justice, we all need mercy and perhaps, we all need some measure of unmerited grace.

“JUST MERCY” FILM  NOW SHOWING NATIONWIDE
Tumblr media
    By Naomi Richard
Just Mercy, a film based on the bestselling book of the same name, tells of the unforgettable story of Bryan Stevenson (played by Michael B. Jordan) and the case of Walter McMillian (Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx), who was convicted and sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit. The film released nationwide January 10, 2020.
The movie stars Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Brie Larson, Rob Morgan, Tim Blake Nelson, Andrene Ward-Hammond, O'Shea Jackson Jr. and Karan Kendrick.
A powerful and thought-provoking true-story, Just Mercy follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan moves to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson).
One of Bryan’s first and most challenging cases was that of Walter McMillian, who in 1987 was sentenced to death for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence. More disturbing is that the only testimony against him comes from Ralph Myers, a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes consumed with legal oppositions, political maneuverings and overt racism as he fights for Walter. Unfortunately, like others with similar passion, he finds the odds -- and the system -- stacked against him.
Over the next six years, Bryan filed multiple legal challenges and conducted several hearings, but the trial court refused to grant Walter a new trial. Bryan appealed the ruling and the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals ordered a new trial because the State withheld evidence of Walter’s innocence. Bryan filed a motion to dismiss all charges and the trial court granted it after the district attorney acknowledged Mr. McMillian’s innocence. While the movie condensed the six years of litigation, it mostly tracked the actual account presented in the book.

Red Carpet View was invited to participate in a call regarding this powerful film, with nearly 1,100 faith-based outlets from around the county. Bryan Stevenson, the original author, was a conference participate, along with Michal B. Jordon and Jamie Foxx.  Stevenson had this to say on what the movie release of his work means to him, “Right now, I’m believing things I’ve never seen. I never thought anyone would take interest. I cannot do the work that I do without faith. I stand with the wrongfully accused, the poor and I’m here to push back against injustice.”
Stevenson, the grandson of slaves, was brought up during the end of Jim Crow and in a segregated community.

Jamie Foxx explained why he chose his role in the film, “Michael B. Jordan! He’s my baby brother in the industry and I’ve loved his work for years.  By far to me, this is the most important film I’ve ever done because of Bryan’s work. He doesn’t fatigue. My answer to the role was an absolute yes because of what he’s gone through and his humility. The worst you could give anyone on death row is hope…Everything he [Bryan] has done has been shaped by hope and faith.]”
Michael B. Jordan encouraged the faith-based community to see the film, “Take others to see the play and host watch parties. “Go see it, Hollywood will look at the interest. We want to leverage the interest to bring more films like this to the big screen. We’re trying to get the story of injustice to as many people as possible, believing that change will ultimately happen. There is power in numbers!”

Writing A Character Of The Opposite Gender And A Different Race by Adam Davis via FilmCourage.com.
Film Courage: How do you know your film found the intended audience? Or maybe there is no intended audience? Maybe it’s just whoever likes the story? BROKEN CEILING has a female protagonist? It’s about a contentious workplace, it’s make-driven. Different things that this person is fighting against. Did you have you have a specific audience or anyone who is interested in a good story to find it?
Adam Davis, Writer/Director: We did have a specific audience. I don’t think that people who are really into sci-fi or horror would necessarily like it?
I needed to find the people that were into dramas. People who worked office jobs, day jobs, women, women of color (specifically) because it’s about a woman of color in a primarily white-male dominated workspace.
Tumblr media
Those were really the true core audience. And when we started seeing the engagement in demographics on Instagram, that is what we found. It was interesting because it was sort of a male/female split like 52% female. But very split between males and females. It was great that a female empowerment story had legs with male eyes who were interested in that.
Film Courage: You wrote the story as well?
Adam: Yes I did.
Film Courage: What prompted you to write it, especially from the female perspective.
Adam: The reason I need to tell the BROKEN CEILING story…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).

[Light spoilers]
The premise of Broken Ceiling is this: “When Angela Walker is passed over for yet another promotion, she decides she’s going to have to break through the invisible corporate barriers once and for all.” Well, color me interested. Being director, Adam Davis’ first feature film, (his award-winning short films include 2016’s No Touching starring Zoë Bell, Heidi Moneymaker, Jake Busey, and Doug Jones), he sure did set out to make a film that is timely and relevant in the present day. Shot entirely in a nondescript office in four days, this independently produced film speaks to toxic work environments and what happens when the dogged out, underpaid, under-appreciated, taken for granted and surely underestimated have had enough.
Tumblr media
What works the best here in this drama is the ability of the actors to work on and against each other in contained spaces. The best scenes are the cast in the conference room on a Saturday morning during the conference call. You know, that conference call that has everyone’s hopes and dreams (and their asses when it comes to their jobs) on the line. Regen Wilson is Ken Wolf (Fear The Walking Dead, VEEP and The Haves and the Have Nots), the boss or Ken, the great manipulator and soothsayer of all the right words at the right time. He is unabashedly loud and quick to anger with his direct reports over the tiniest inconveniences and smallest irritations. His relationships with the three other employees who join him this fateful Saturday are complex to where when they are revealed later down the line, you can see how he’d been playing them against each other. Wolf is convincingly the big dog in the yard and brash enough to make you remember it—until he isn’t.
Torran Kitts is Garrett, the young upstart—newer to the company and newer to the corporate world. He is bright-eyed, too eager and obviously a junior, but entrusted enough to be a part of this crew for this big deal happening. Later in the second half of the film when things get way more heated, Kitts has some unfortunately funny lines of dialogue while trying to defuse an escalating situation while he’s in shock. We see an interesting tag along but not quite buddy-buddy presence between him and his senior at the company, Tyler, played by Rane Jameson (The Spearhead Effect, The Monroes and NCIS)
But it is Angela, portrayed by Karan Kendrick (Hidden Figures, The Hunger Games, and the forthcoming The Hate U Give), who is the best part of this film. We see her almost wearing the office and her job like a second skin. She is assertive, knowing she deserves the promotion, the pay raise and the recognition. She craves the acknowledgement of all the work she’s put in and the cementing of a higher position in the company because she’s been Ken’s secretary for so very, very long (and has worn more than one hat while doing her job over the years).

'Just Mercy' One Month After It Came Out Review There is a moment late in Just Mercy when death row inmate Walter McMillan's (Jamie Foxx) conviction is suddenly overturned because the prosecuting representatives of Alabama suddenly decide to agree with the defense.
