Makena Coffee Estateは、Kirinyaga群 GariamaにあるJapheth氏が所有する家族経営の農場です���Embuの町から約20kmに位置し、ケニア山斜面の土壌に恵まれた場所で コーヒー生産に必要なすべてのミネラルを含んだ赤い火山性土壌を有しています。標高1750mという高地で、年間降雨量 1500mm、13-26°Cの涼しい気候が高品質なコーヒーを育んでいます。
収穫されたコーヒーチェリーは同日にウェットミルに届けられると、ハンドピッキングにより丁寧に選定されます（赤く綺麗に熟したチェリーを選定、未熟・過熟のチェリー 異物などは除去されます）。水洗いに使われる川の水は、浸透ピットを通した後 再循環されます。その後 コーヒーチェリーは二次処理のためドライミルに運ばれる前に乾燥処理がなされます。プロセス全体を通して最高水準の衛生状態が確保されたコーヒーは最終的に Karatina の中央ケニアコーヒーミルに運ばれます。
今回ご紹介するコーヒーはSL28, Ruiru11のピーベリーです。収穫量の5-20%のみに見られる 小さな丸豆ですが、より凝縮された 綺麗な酸質のコーヒーをお楽しみいただけます。是非お試しください！

Ndimaini Coffee Factoryは Karatinaの町の近くにある Gakuyu Fermers Cooperative Society (Gakuyu FCS)が運営管理する施設で、近隣の3つの村の 計1143人の小規模農家にサービスを提供しています。 赤い火山質の土壌に恵まれた土地で、それぞれの農家は1haの1/8 - 1/4程度の農場を所有しており、1ロットあたりは 同日に収穫された コーヒーの木 約250本分のチェリーからできています（通常 シェードツリーとして 併せてマカダミアやグラベルレアが栽培されています）。
Gakuyu FCSは 単にコーヒー生産を行うだけでなく、所属する農家に対して 農業資源の購入費用や子供の学校の授業料などを対価を前払いするカタチで提供したり、土壌品質改善等 技術的なトレーニングを定期開催するなど、さまざまな支援を行っています。取り組みの結果として、農業の成功と コミュニティの生活品質の向上 両面の実現を目指しています。
