Bette Kane relationships that are important to you? Ideas for new supporting characters that would suit her?

For my headcanon reboot, I'm sourcing opinions. I have an idea of what kind of character I want Bette to be (she's been several different things in the comics), but am much hazier on who I want her to interact with and have strong, long-term relationships with.

She's the former Tennis star who left the gig early (leaving money on the table) because she got bored of it after a Golden Slam. Was going to have her study sports medicine at UCLA, then become an orthopedic surgeon (she's pretty much amazing at anything she attempts). She's been playing tennis competitively for years, so would have millions, but not tens of millions, of dollars at this young age. But if you really like, I guess she could keep up tennis instead.

For the record, in this universe Kate Kane debuts as Batwoman in her late 20s, and Dick is only 4 years younger than her. If I keep Bette the same age as Dick (as I was planning to), then Kate as mentor doesn't work for me.

I was thinking about a Titans West sort of thing with Mal and Karen and maybe later Don Hall and Holly Granger. I'd like at least one more member, though, so Bette isn't a third wheel before Don and Holly arrive and after Hank leaves (when Don "dies" - it's a whole thing). Of course, if she's continuing to pursue a career in tennis, this could be less of a thing.

Hank's in D.C. and Gar in New York at this time, so that puts the out as her daily companions.

I love the idea of characters (especially non-team characters) having civilian supporting casts - ordinary people - around them. But I'm not too good at inventing characters.

Normally I split this type of post in two, one with characters I've already read and loved and one with characters I want to read in the future. But I haven't read too much DC, and BDS is still calling for a boycott against Marvel while the Captain America 4 movie plans to contain Sabra, a character who is Israeli propaganda personified, and I don't want to promote any Marvel characters while that is going on. So, we have a DC only edition. The only characters in this list that I've read at least one full book for are Connor, Duke, and Virgil, so I apologize if there's any incorrect information.

if you actually think about it, this year has been amazing for the members of Titans West.

Bette came back as Flamebird (DC's Legion of Bloom) with Titans West getting revived with Hank, Dawn and Karen (much to their chagrin)

Charley, Mal and Karen gaining main supporting roles in World's Finest: Teen Titans, with this being Charley's first speaking role since 2008 (Countdown to Adventure).

Lilith becoming the deuteragonist of Power Girl's ongoing

Duela having an adaption of her Pre-Flashpoint iteration in Gotham Knights compared to Batwoman which used her N52 one

Gnarrk getting revived as part of the Sanctuary victims in One Minute War

Mal's family- do you have headcanon for them?

I love civilian supporting casts for people. I even really like some relatives that aren't always around, but the hero sees occasionally and gets along with. And we know Mal had a sister, but, so far as I know, we never saw her again. Full disclosure that I haven't read many comics in a while, specifically avoid Events, and anything that looks dark and gritty, so I may have missed her.

Anyway, I have ideas for them, but I'd love to hear everyone else's idea, too. Just for fun, just to share - I'm certainly not actually writing anything (not gifted at coming up with plots and I hate to do bad things to characters I like, so I never come up with anything).

So, I guess the first issue is their financial status. As I've previously mentioned, Karen actually patents her solar panels and battery in my universe, so they end up rich, rich, rich. And Karen is "family first" - she made sure she and Mal had enough to keep them the rest of their lives first (they've been poor and don't want to be again), then they take care of their immediate family, then extended family, then they start on charities.

But I do understand that having everyone rich can be very boring. For me, it's just that the super-genius heroes and villains realistically should be able to be and so that's the route I went. I don't blame anyone for not doing that. Not only for not having so many characters so rich (ironically, I'm making Bruce Wayne much less rich than he currently is, BTW), but also not the change the world in the way some of these techs would.

So while I had Cindy go to graduate school and get a literature PhD and then get a part time instructor's job with no benefits, that would obviously be a very poor choice if her family was strapped for cash. Whether or not she could afford tuition depends on how strapped they are and what year she's in (because of timeslide). And, of course, how many hours she has to work for other reasons.

While she certainly doesn't have to get postsecondary schooling, I would strongly avoid a bad ending for her. I don't like the "bad influences/environment turns her down a bad road" path, because her brother is awesome and he had the same environment. And I don't want anything horrible to happen to her, because I don't like depressing stories.

What about Mal's parents? How often does he see them? What's their relationship like? How do they feel about him being a superhero? Do you have jobs in mind for them? How old do you think they were when he was born? Are they still together? Does he have aunts and uncles and cousins?
