Book Three: The Giving Tree
“Sir Cheese, sure ka na ba rito?”
Surprising, hindi lang kami ni Jazmin ang nandito ngayon sa iisang table sa library. She was with Bamboo, isa rin sa mga estudyante ko sa Humanities and Art Appreciation. She’s nice, she has a toothy smile and sweet voice.
It was a children’s book.
It was weird, maybe? Kasi nasa college na sila. They were sophomores, and Jazmin was taking my subject kahit naghalo na ang year niya as third and fourth year.
“The Giving Tree,” pagbasa ni Bamboo sa title, “by Shel Silverstein.” Maganda ba ’to?”
“It’s okay. Magkaka-insight kayo diyan.”
“Bhe, assignment natin ’to. Talagang madadamay ka.”
Si Jazmin muna ang nagbasa. Si Bamboo tuloy ang inurirat ako kasi alam na nagbabasa lang din ako ng non-academic book.
“Sir, di ba, anak ka ni Sabrina Dardenne?” curious na curious na tanong ni Bamboo.
Matipid akong ngumiti saka tumango.
“Ooohh . . .” Namilog ang bibig niya at napatango-tango pa. “Ang pogi mo, sir. May kapatid ka ba? Beke nemen . . .”
Most of the time, sa daddy side ako. Wala naman silang expectations sa ’kin maliban sa huwag akong magda-drugs.”
“Grabe naman sa huwag magda-drugs, sir. Pero may point naman.”
“Yeah, malaki ang point.”
“Walang pressure, sir? Kasi parang dito lang yata kayo sa uni. Tagong-tago pa. Tinatago nila kayo sa public?”
“Huy, hindi, a.” Napailing agad ako. “Wala namang pressure. Hindi ko rin kasi masyadong ine-expose na anak nila akong dalawa unless kailangan.”
“Pero ang ganda ng lahi n’yo, sir, ha. Ang expressive ng mata n’yo. Ganyan ba talaga kayo tumingin sa tao?”
“Paanong tumingin?”
“Yung parang in love na in love kayo sa kausap n’yo.”
“Pfft!”
“Once there was a tree . . . and she loved a little boy,” pagbasa niya sa unang passage.
For sure, kailangan kong basahin ang lahat ng inputs nila about the book.
“Children’s book ba ’to? Bakit ang lalim ng hugot?”
“Natuwa ka ba sa story?” tanong ko kahit natatawa pa rin.
“Sir, hindi ’to nakakatuwa.
Parang same sa parable of the prodigal son. Yung kahit nilayasan na siya ng anak niya at halos maging failure na ’yon sa buhay; pagbalik sa kanya, tinanggap pa rin niya nang buong puso.”
Naituro agad ni Bamboo si Jazmin. “Ay, agree ako diyan, bhe.” Tumango-tango pa siya. “Siguro kung parent’s perspective ’to, kahit nakakabuwisit, tatanggapin ko na.”
Actually, I want them to understand how unconditional love works, and how selfishness of an individual affects the whole perspective. And why happiness and contentment matters to an individual.
There’s something beautiful about love na masarap i-reciprocate, and we tend to get angry for someone na alam nating inaabuso na pero binabalewala lang kasi nga mahal nila.
We get mad because we see love on one side and injustice on the other. We get angry because we expect it to be returned, but the person who loved more received nothing in return.
Bamboo’s anger has a point.
But Bamboo’s perspective came from a romantic viewpoint.
Some parents will give up everything for their children. It’s unselfish love over selfishness.
“Hmm.” Nagkibit-balikat ako. “It’s a clear way of showing na kapag ang tao, naging self-centered, nakaka-damage sila sa ibang tao na naturally a giver. Kung lagi mong iisipin ang sarili mo at hindi mo iko-consider ang mga taong nagmamahal sa ’yo, baka hindi mo na mapansin na ikaw ang umuubos sa kanila habang minamahal ka nila.”
“Grabe sa hugot, sir. Ang tanong ko lang, kung nainis ka ba, haha!”
“Hindi naman siya nakakainis. Depende siguro kung paano mo siya titingnan. May klase pa ba kayo?” Tiningnan ko silang dalawa.
“Ako, sir, meron,” sabi agad ni Bamboo. “After lunch, may NatSci pa ’ko.”
“Ikaw?” tanong ko kay Jazmin.
“Mamaya pang 3, sir,” matipid na sabi niya. “Dito muna ako sa library.”
Napatango-tango naman ako. “Okay. Dito na lang din muna ako sa library.” • Bamboo's character by @EithneAoife

Mosaics & Magpies - a year of Edmonton Public Art
Tumblr media
(Detail of Calder Community Mosaic by SpaceMakePlace Design (Rebecca Bayer & David Gregory - photo Doyle C. Marko)
The city of Edmonton is more vibrant thanks to a swath of public art installations over the past year. The Edmonton Arts Council public art and conservation teams were busy as they worked with artists from across Canada to place the final touches on artworks at Calder Library, ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞ , Rossdale Linear Park, South Haven Cemetery, and Borden Natural Swimming Pool. In addition to new work, the conservation team took on more than 20 special projects, including cleaning bronze sculptures in two city parks, restoring the Norman Yates mural from the old Stanley Milner Library, and cleaning up Spectators for the Castle Downs Arena.
Tumblr media
(Images from #YEGCanvas 2017-2018 clockwise by Elsa Robinson, Vanessa Ryl, and Kasie Campbell)
#YEGCanvas 2017/18 showcased 45 new works by local artists around the city on billboards and the LRT line.
Tumblr media

Perhaps the biggest public art news story of 2018 is the completion of ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞ - Edmonton’s Indigenous Art Park. In development since 2013, the park was introduced to the public with a snowy opening ceremony on September 15. More than 75 people gathered at the site within Queen Elizabeth Park to celebrate the artists, artworks, and the spirit of collaboration that informed every stage of its development.
ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞ is the result of a partnership among the City of Edmonton, Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations, Métis Nation of Alberta, and Edmonton Arts Council with substantial direction from Indigenous artists, Elders, knowledge holders, and community members. The park features contemporary works by six Canadian Indigenous artists that express “the stories of this place.”
The artists are: Amy Malbeuf (Rich Lake, Alberta), Tiffany Shaw-Collinge (Edmonton, Alberta), Duane Linklater (Moose Cree First Nation, Ontario), Jerry Whitehead (James Smith First Nation, Saskatchewan), Mary Anne Barkhouse (Nimpkish Band, Kwakiutl First Nation), and Marianne Nicolson (Dzawada'enuxw Nation). Candice Hopkins was the park curator.

In addition, some yet-to-be revealed works were installed at the Edmonton Valley Zoo and Dermott Park, while artists Sergio Serrano and Alexander Stewart will complete their artwork at Capilano Library early in the new year.
Read on for some images and descriptions and stay tuned in 2019 as new artworks are revealed!
Tumblr media
(Calder Community Mosaic - Rebecca Bayer & David Gregory, photo Doyle C. Marko)
Calder Community Mosaic fuses an ancient art form with 21st century techniques. The artwork is made from more than 7,500 triangular stained glass tiles. It measures 4.8m X 2.4m and sits in the Community Room at the Calder Library.  The mosaic is visible from the library’s forecourt and welcomes all visitors in the universal languages of colour and geometric pattern.
Tumblr media
(One of the two mosaics that make up Ripples on a Pond by William Frymire at Borden Natural Swimming Pool - photo Aspen Zettel)
The artwork Ripples on a Pond is composed of two mosaics created by William Frymire. The colourful artworks resemble small ponds and feature three native Alberta aquatic species – the Western Painted Turtle, the Leopard Frog and the dragonfly. All are interdependent species susceptible to human modification of our natural environment, and key indicators of pond health. The mosaic’s illusion of a shallow pond conveys this message in a playful and fun manner while underlining the natural filtration of the pool’s ecosystem. Realized in a postmodernist style, this mosaic is a contemporary take on an ancient art form.
Tumblr media
(mamohkamatowin (Helping One Another) by Jerry Whitehead photo by Brad Crowfoot)
Many nations, Indigenous and settler, helped shape the history of this place, amiskwaciy – “beaver house” in Cree. The theme of helping each other is inherent in mamohkamatowin, artists, artisans, and students came together to figure out the technical aspects, layer the mosaic tiles, and help bring the turtles to life. As they worked, shaping and adhering tiles, students from amiskwaciy Academy engaged with elders and knowledge holders who carry on the tradition of telling stories of this place. mamohkamatowin is a symbol of all these elements, and represents the stories of this place.
Tumblr media
(mikikwan by Duane Linklater - video still by Conor McNally)
mikikwan is a concrete reproduction of a 9,000-year-old buffalo bone hide scraper from the archives of the Royal Alberta Museum. The artist chose the bone as his source material because of the many meanings, ideas, histories, narratives, languages and cultures embedded within it. The finished sculpture will memorialize the work of Indigenous women and the relation of that labour to the land. The sculpture also pays respect to the importance of the buffalo itself to the people living in this place, the communal aspect of its use, and its destruction with the arrival of Europeans on the Plains.
Tumblr media
(Reign by Mary Anne Barkhouse - video still by Conor McNally)
From the echoes of trumpeting hadrosaurs traversing the valley floor, to being buried under a kilometre of ice, this territory has witnessed radical change over the years. It has been home to hunter and hunted alike, be it Albertosaurus and Edmontosaurus, or coyote and hare. The plants depicted have their own history as important to both body and soul. For those that have gone before, for that which has sustained and for those that have survived, Reign pays respect to the healing and adaptive nature of the land and to the original inhabitants of this territory.
Tumblr media
(iskotew by Amy Malbeuf - video still by Conor McNally)
iskotew is a sculptural representation of the word “fire” in nehiyawewin (Cree language) syllabics: ᐃᐢᑯᑌᐤ. The colours chosen are based on colours that are seen in both historical and contemporary works as to illustrate the congruencies and survival within Indigenous cultures. The vibrancy of the colours are also congruent with the vibrancy of our cultures and languages. The nehiyawewin word for woman, iskwew, is derived from the word fire, therefore; iskotew connotes the sacred abilities of women, and the often unrecognized labours of Indigenous women who contributed to creating the place now known as Edmonton.
Tumblr media
(Preparing to Cross the Sacred River by Marianne Nicolson - video still by Conor McNally)
Preparing to Cross the Sacred River references and acknowledges the natural formation of the North Saskatchewan River Valley banks, wildlife, and shared stories and traditions of Indigenous peoples. The stone slabs form a wall or “lookout” etched with images of “this place.” The artwork, which features sandblasted patterning reminiscent of beading styles, symbolizes the need to reconnect with ancient and sacred Indigenous beliefs to uphold our relationship to the land and protect the planet. Such activities must be built upon the foundation of ancient stories that tell how humans came to be in this place and how they must act within it.
Tumblr media
(pehonan by Tiffany Shaw-Collinge - video still by Conor McNally)
This installation is inspired by the idea of pehonan (Cree – gathering or waiting place)  and the oral traditions of Indigenous people as well as the many stories told of this area. It offers a space for teaching, storytelling, or performance. Conceptually, it references the oral roots of this place, and the ways in which stories change depending on proximity to the source. “The furthest back seat (at the top) references the deep past. It’s farthest from our reach when you are at the base, but when you are sitting at the top you have the greatest field of vision with perhaps the greatest perspective. When you sit on the lowest seat you are closest to the future, but not able to see to far into the distance.”
Tumblr media
(One of the four sculptures that comprise The Magpies’ Nests by Chai Duncan & Kevin Sehn - photo Doyle C. Marko)
Rossdale Linear Park is a slice of nature in in an urban setting. The Magpies’ Nests considers the complex interactions between humans and nature as well as the concept of “home”. The welded steel nests on top of four plinths relate to structures found in Edmonton. The pyramid references the Muttart Conservatory; the cube stands in for local industrial buildings relating to ideas of innovation and productivity; the pentagonal prism, or house -shape, represents dwellings found the surrounding community; the sphere represents the magpie’s own expertly built domed nest.
Tumblr media
(Night shot of Veil by Brandon McGillicuddy & Jeffrey Riedl at South Haven Cemetery - photo by Doyle C. Marko)
Veil  is a large fabric-like lattice of airy line work appearing to billow from the South Haven Cemetery Service Building’s rectilinear geometry. The artwork’s delicacy and flow elegantly compliments the design and materials of the building it inhabits, and is empathetic to the sensitive context of the cemetery. The imagery evokes medieval Vanitas, or memento mori paintings, which reflect on mortality, the vanity of life, and transient nature of existence. Cloth, or empty clothing, is used to represent absence and loss. Veil represents loss in a non-religious way.

#PHnews: Online arts and crafts store opens opportunities for single mom
MANILA – Florisa “Polleng” Marquez, 31, handles financial accounts on a daily basis. But when she’s not dealing with money and investments, she’s encouraging others to develop a new craft to get through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Marquez, a single mother, finds therapeutic value in doing arts and crafts. When she realized she would have to raise her daughter by herself, she decided to paint her way through her sadness. It didn’t occur to her until much later that her inclination towards the arts would eventually help her boost her finances.
She opened her online store “Art ni Polleng” in 2018 to inspire art-based interventions as a means for coping with stress and dealing with trauma of abuse.
“Gusto ko po ma-inspire din yung mga katulad kong solo parent na mag-put up din sila ng sarili nilang pagkakakitaan para huwag silang magse-self pity dahil kulang sila or mag-isa lang sila (I wanted to inspire solo parents like me to put up their own business so they won’t engage in self-pity because they feel lacking or because they’re alone),” she said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency.
This, she said, is especially true at a time when pandemic-related lockdowns have brought an increase in abuses against women by their partners.

“Dun nag-start yung mga babaeng sinasaktan physically kasi di sila makahiwalay dahil wala silang sariling income (That’s when women start to experience physical abuse because they’re scared to leave their husbands since they don’t have any source of income),” she added.
Her shop offers all sorts of crafting items guaranteed to elicit feelings of calm and happiness among her clients including ready-to-paint plaster letters and figures and do-it-yourself casting kits with prices ranging from PHP150 to PHP300.
“Puwede mo ipagawa ang name mo tapos ipapadala namin siya sayo ng walang color. May kasama siya na paint at paint brush. Ikaw na yung bahala mag design at color. After nila makulayan ‘yun puwede mo na i-display (You can also have your name made and we’ll send you the letters without color. The set includes paint and a paint brush. It’s up to you to paint them. After you paint them, you can also display them),” she said.
Last month, she also introduced combs and hand-held mirrors made of resin with dried flowers or beads that are pretty enough to be given as gifts or to keep for yourself. The prices range from PHP130 to PHP180 depending on the size and design.
Clients can also avail of resin name plates with dried flowers or beads. Each nameplate comes with a stand and fairy lights to make anyone’s home twinkle with charm.

Calendars and calling cards
Long before she jumped into the arts and crafts business, Marquez started selling personalized calendars and calling cards. From designing the layout to printing, Marquez does everything by herself.
Currently, she can print 50 to 100 calendars a day using an Epson printer. She dreams of putting up her own printing shop one day.
“Gusto ko magkaroon ng printing press na mas malaki. Kapag mas malaki yung machine mo, mas marami kang mapo-produce na orders (I want to open up a big printing press. If you have bigger machines, you’ll be able to produce more orders),” she said.
Would you buy a calendar that features photos of your pet on every month of the year? (Contributed photo)
Marquez makes it a point to offer new layout designs to stimulate sales growth and explore new markets.
She also emphasized the importance of always making room for improvement and listening to her customers’ feedback.
"Halimbawa may customer na nag-suggest na ‘Ay hindi masyadong maganda yung ganitong part’, puwede mo pag-aralan kung anong ma-i-improve mo sa product para mas gumanda pa (For example, a customer says ‘This part doesn’t look too good’, you can study and find ways to improve it so it becomes a better product),” she said.
Art therapy
Marquez believes that one doesn’t necessarily need to have special talents to reap the therapeutic benefits of arts and crafts.
“Sobrang therapy po ang arts (Art is very therapeutic),” she said.

She is proud to say that her business not only allows her to make traditional crafts, but helps her pass her skills on to the next generation to keep her art and craft alive.
Marquez said that she’s happy to share her love for arts and crafts with her 11-year-old daughter Shainne Llorize.

While admitting she doesn’t get to sketch and paint as often as before, selling craft items continue to give her a sense of fulfilment.
“Dun ka sa gusto mo para kahit napapagod ka, masaya ka pa rin. Para palaging maganda ang output ng mga products mo (Follow your passion so that even when you get tired, you’re still happy. It’s going to help you make sure that you offer the best products),” she said. (PNA)

Zines as Testimonies
Victoria Mae Cuevas
“In zines, everyday oddballs were speaking plainly about themselves and our society with an honest sincerity, a revealing intimacy, and a healthy “Fuck you” to sanctioned authority—for no money and no recognition, writing for an audience of like-minded misfits,” Stephen Duncombe stated in the 2nd edition of his book Notes from Underground: Zines and the Politics of Alternative Culture. Unlike usual books found in typical book stores, zinemakers challenge social practices and traditional ways of publishing. The zine’s being independently published not only makes it accessible TO everyone, but also welcomes the idea of different creative and experimental forms. They can also help raise awareness on social issues that are often ignored by mainstream publishers and media.
Some zines that I have read confront political issues through satire, comics, and collage. Others play with different kinds of paper, materials, and paper sizes to emphasize its sociopolitical message.
Para sa Alaala ng Yumao Nating Ama by Magpies is a photobook that collects family pictures with President Rodrigo Duterte’s face edited into them. At first look, I thought the photos were real. The zine looked sincere, until I’ve read the messages written at the back of each photo. The messages take the form of tributes to a deceased father, and in these tributes the children remember Duterte as a vulgar and misogynistic father, revealing the current political issues in a humorous manner.
Another zine that archives national issues is Freedom by the students of Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA). The pages are collaged newspaper cut-outs from Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, and Balita, with articles about the unjust death of Kian Delos Santos, corruption, maltreatment of farmers, twisted accusations, and various crimes around the country, especially highlighting human rights violations. Words were either messily scattered or layered upon the folded booklet. It was the output of a creative writing elective class where each student was given a whole piece of paper and photocopied front pages of newspapers. Considering the method, the outcome was surprisingly good. The zine combined news articles with illustrations, found poems, and calls, allowing the students to express their opinions on pressing issues.
Magpies’ How to Make Satan Proud: A 30-day Guide to Breaking Divine Laws confronts censorship and the government’s ways of suppressing freedom of expression, including through its arts initiatives. The zine engages the readers in a game, by providing a to-do list. The zine questions the reliability of standards, laws, and legalities in relation to current issues on general arts. How to Make Satan Proud dares not only to interfere with the system, but to suggest alternatives to the system too. Despite its solemn black and gold cover, the text inside the zine was written informally. But they aren’t rants, they are facts. In one page of the zine, it says, “[k]aya powerful ang indie scene kasi pwedeng magdaldal tungkol sa kasalukuyan at kasalukuyan lang”. In another, “[a]min ang panahon na ‘to. Kami ang magsasalita.”
Aside from the three zines that were mentioned, there are others that also speak out about sociopolitical issues such as Samahang Layb’s The Life of Duterte, and Mac Andre Arboleda’s The Face of a Marcos Apologist. Zines like these can be found in venues like BLTX, Komikon, and Zine Orgy which happen regularly.
Testimonies are powerful because of the witnesses’ statements regarding their view of the evidence. Zines contribute to public memory as personal testimonies of the zinemakers' untouched truths. It is the public's right to access these testimonies, as zines are communicative of the author's opinions on and understanding of our society's current concerns. Remembering these testimonies allow us to perceive and understand these concerns in a much wider and deeper way. As citizens, it is a must that we are aware of current affairs no matter what generation you belong. Zines can serve as a platform for the youth to connect with young creators. As Stephen Duncombe wrote in the same book, “[z]ines weren’t the capricious rambling of isolated cranks (though some certainly were), but the variegated voices of a subterranean world staking out its identity through the cracks of capitalism and in the shadows of the mass media.”

Home Entertainment Consumer Guide: November 29, 2018
7 NEW TO NETFLIX
"Buybust" "De Palma" "Green Room" "Into the Forest" "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" "Krisha" "The Workshop"
7 NEW TO BLU-RAY/DVD
"2001" (4K)
For a very long time, it felt like if you had a DVD player, it was required that you also owned two films, The Wachowskis' "The Matrix" and Stanley Kubrick's "2001." Now the tide is slowly shifting from standard HD Blu-rays to 4K ones and a legion of great, essential films are being remastered for the new format. Some of the 4K remasters feel almost like afterthoughts. You could barely tell the difference between an upscaled Blu-ray and the 4K release, so why bother the double dip into your wallet? However, there are some titles that simply look made for 4K, and one of those films is "2001," now available with the best technical presentation it's ever received. The depth of the field and the complexity of the audio mix have never popped quite like this, and that's coming from someone who has covered this film on DVD, Blu-ray, and seen it in a theater. This is the best it's ever looked.

"The Big Lebowski"
It may not have the visual depth of field as "2001," but another one of Roger's Great Movies hit 4K this month, likely to coincide with the launch of Joel and Ethan Coen's "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" on Netflix. And while you probably remember most of the memorable lines from the "The Big Lebowski," you might have forgotten how much this film pops visually, making it a great addition to a 4K collection.

"Blindspotting"
As the year comes to a close, there have been a number of Sundance hits popping up on year-end lists like "Leave No Trace" and "Sorry to Bother You," both winners at Gotham, National Board of Review, and the Independent Spirit Awards. One of the forgotten films appears to be the Opening Night film from this year's Park City event, Daveed Diggs' and Rafael Casal's excellent dramedy about a young man in Oakland who witnesses a police-involved shooting. Although that description doesn't really get at what this film accomplishes. It's smart, hysterical, and emotionally raw. A decade from now, Daveed Diggs is going to be HUGE, and people will look back at this film like they look at "Do the Right Thing" (a clear inspiration) now. And they'll wonder why more people weren't talking about it in 2018.

"Candyman"
The way the internet and my odd career works, I've ended up writing about "Candyman" several times in the last few weeks, assisted by this excellent new release from Scream Factory. It's one of the best horror movie Special Editions of the year, with tons of special features, including new interviews with the cast and crew, but it's the movie itself that will startle you. I'll admit that the teenage me had kind of blown it off as just another boogeyman movie, but there's a lot going on here regarding race and urban legends, elements that I virtually guarantee you the Jordan Peele-produced sequel announced this week will emphasize. This is the best thing you could be the horror fan on your holiday list.

"Crazy Rich Asians"
There are scant few actual movie phenomenons any more. Most of the movies that make a fortune at the box office are more product than art. Don't get me wrong, I love "Black Panther" and "Incredibles 2" but their box office success was as guaranteed as the sun coming up tomorrow. A film that truly exceeds all pre-buzz is rare. We got "A Quiet Place" early in the year, but the real box office story of 2018 is probably "Crazy Rich Asians," a film so successful that it's even being predicted for some guild citations and maybe even an Oscar nomination or two. As if there was any question as to whether or not an Asian ensemble could anchor a blockbuster, it's been answered with over $220 million worldwide and counting. People love this movie and it's been encouraging to feel like that love is more than just a calculated response to a known commodity and more of an embracing of a previously-unheard voice reaching a mass audience.

"The Meg"
Oh how I wish I could wholeheartedly recommend "The Meg." As a fan of the Statham Era of the "Fast and Furious" movies and someone who considers "Jaws" one of the best movies ever made, the idea of "Transporter vs. Shark" had me pumped from the minute I first saw the preview. But this is a half-hearted "Sure, if you have nothing else to do" more than a strong thumbs up. The more I think about it, the more stunned I am how often this movie goes wrong. First, it takes itself WAY too seriously. A movie like this needs to be tongue-in-cheek, allowing Statham to show how he can blend action and humor like has in the "Fast" movies and "Spy." There's arguably no one better than him and combining the two, and yet "The Meg" rarely allows him to do so. By the time the shark is getting to beach goers, you'll be bored. And I never thought a movie about a giant shark that starred Jason Statham could be boring.

"Pixar Short Film Collection, Vol. 3"
The third edition of short films created by the geniuses at Pixar should make for a great gift this holiday season...but only for people who already have the first two. This is easily the weakest collection overall, even if it does have a few highlights like the gorgeous "Piper" and "Lou," the two best on here by some stretch. As someone who loves Pixar and short films, my family has watched all three volumes, and this is the first one that they almost checked out of. It doesn't help that a LOT of the ones included here aren't the theatrical kind (like "Bao" or the dreadful "Lava") but mini-movies included on Blu-ray releases, quick tie-ins to films like "Inside Out," "Monsters University," and "Cars 3," which Disney collectors almost certainly already own.

NITAG to decide on inclusion of athletes in vax priority list
#PHnews: NITAG to decide on inclusion of athletes in vax priority list
MANILA – The interim National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) will decide on appeals to include in the Covid-19 vaccine priority list Filipino athletes and other delegates who will be competing in the Tokyo Summer Olympics and the Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi this year, a Palace official said Wednesday.
Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles made this remark after the Philippine Sports Commission requested Covid-19 vaccines for athletes once available “given their required qualification competitions held in various parts of the globe.”
“Sa [NITAG] po natin binibigay yung mga sectors na gusto natin ma-prioritize and it’s up to that technical advisory group na i-collate yung mga requests and recommendations for prioritization and sila yung nagbibigay ultimately ng guidance sa vaccination cluster kung paano yung prioritization (We will relay to the NITAF sectors we want to prioritize and it’s up to that technical advisory group to collate those requests and recommendations for prioritization and they will ultimately give guidance to the vaccination cluster on prioritization),” he said in an interview over state-run PTV-4.
While the NITAG had previously released a more expansive priority list, Nograles said new sectors seeking to be included will have to go through the same process of review by members of the advisory group.
“Although meron nang napag-usapan na priority list of sectors, pero siguro yung mga pagpasok ng ibang sectors ay kailangan dumaan din sa proseso ng pagde-determine ng NITAG (Although we already have a priority list of sectors, others sectors that want to be included need to undergo a process which will be determined by the NITAG),” he added.
Nograles said the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) may “weigh in” on the NITAG’s decision, but would usually give full trust and confidence to the final verdict.
“Siguro yung IATF ay puwede naman mag weigh in ang IATF kumbaga. Pero kumbaga merong sariling vaccine cluster kasi ‘yan e under kay Secretary [Carlito] Charlie Galvez. At kami kasi sa IATF, parang nagbibigay na kami ng full trust and confidence doon sa vaccine cluster na ‘yan (Perhaps the IATF can weigh in. But it belongs to its own vaccine cluster under Secretary Charlie Galvez. And we at the IATF, we give our full trust and confidence in that vaccine cluster),” he said.
Last Tuesday, Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, chair of the Senate Committee on Sports, appealed to Galvez to include national athletes and coaches in the priority list.
"Bandila ng Pilipinas at dangal ng lahing Pilipino ang itatanghal ng ating mga atleta sa mga palarong ito. Dapat lamang na bigyan din natin sila ng sapat na proteksyon (Our athletes represent the Philippine flag and honor of the Filipinos in these competitions. It is only proper to give them enough protection as well),” Go said.
Go also said this is not merely about competition but is also a source of livelihood for athletes and other sports professionals, especially those who come from poor communities.
He said Galvez responded positively to the appeal, adding that they are studying how the competing athletes can be prioritized alongside, and without prejudice, to other sectors that have been identified as a top priority for vaccination, such as front-liners and those belonging to poor and vulnerable sectors.
Currently, national athletes are preparing for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics where they hope to bag the country's first gold medal. They will also be participating in the 2021 SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam to defend the Philippines' championship title, and the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games to be held in Thailand in May next year.
On Tuesday, Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino said business tycoon Enrique Razon Jr. will shoulder the inoculation of the Tokyo Olympics-bound athletes.
Razon, the owner of International Container Terminal Services Inc. and Bloomberry Resorts, earlier said he will bring in 20 million doses of Moderna vaccines. (PNA)
