Sokka noticed it during the small moments, when no one thought he was looking.
One thing about Sokka, though; he always looked out for his baby sister.
They’d all grown up together, the two of them and his best friend, Aang. Of course, that was a topic of heated debate between the siblings; who was actually Aang’s best friend. They often tried to one up the other just to get a rise out of the other. Nevertheless, the three of them were usually always together.
Katara and Aang spent most of their alone time together, though. They just spent a lot of time together, in general. The same way that he and Sokka did! Except…
It wasn’t the same. Not exactly.
The older brother didn’t think much of it at first. Katara had always been physically affectionate and doting, so the frequent hand touches and hugs really didn’t alarm him much. It was Katara’s way of showing support; more often than not accompanied by encouraging hope filled phrases.
That’s when he noticed the hair tugging.
The lot of them were all older now, studying their own various interests at the illustrious United Republic University. The first time he saw it (or rather, cared enough to take notice of it), Katara had dragged him and the rest of their friend group into a study session a few weeks before midterms. The Gaang started in the library but had, eventually, been shused out. Aang suggested moving their “study” session outside since it was such an unseasonably warm day in Republic City. Katara’s sour expression dropped the minute the airbender turned towards her for her approval. It was technically her study session they’d sabotaged and Sokka would be lying if he said he hadn’t felt the teensiest bit guilty (but only a little bit).
Anyway, the Waterbender was suddenly all shy smiles and giving in giddily as she peered up at Aang through her lashes, tucking a loose curl behind her ear. The arrow tattooed man grabbed Katara’s unoccupied hand and led the rest of them out into the massive quad area of their school. Of course, no one else but Sokka would notice the way Katara continued to play with her hair throughout the rest of the day.
Then, the giggling. Oh Spirits, the giggling.
The two of them would often laugh and joke at Sokka’s expense (much to his extreme annoyance). And, really, it wasn’t out of the ordinary for Katara to find Aang funny. He was a funny guy! That everyone could agree on, best friends or not.
This kind of giggling that Katara was doing, though… it was like she was laughing about a secret to herself; whether or not whatever Aang had said was actually funny.
Once, during winter break, Sokka caught the two of them late at night around the fire pit. He hadn’t interrupted them but he’d seen it nonetheless. They’d all stumbled home drunk from a pub crawl in the ever-expanding city in the part of the South Pole they called home. Sokka thought they’d be knocked out by now (they were all pretty drunk); the only reason why he was up was to use the restroom. It seemed that the two of them managed to sober up a bit to speak coherently enough to each other.
But not enough to be mindful of personal space, apparently.
He saw Aang whisper something in her ear, softly gripping the thighs that draped across his waist. Before he could even finish his sentence, his sister was giggling uncontrollably; leaning into the airbender and burying her nose into his neck. Sokka shook his head and stumbled as quietly as he could to the bathroom.
Nothing gave Katara away more than the blushing, though.
Or, maybe it was the cheek kissing that sealed the deal?
No, no. It was definitely the long, lingering stares combined with the “discreet” lip biting that did it.
Sokka couldn’t help but roll his eyes at how obvious those oblivious idiots were.
Yes, Big Brother saw all and could recall plenty of times where he caught the two of them tap dancing over the line of “just best friends”. Whether it was the blushing, the touching, the sighing or just general lovesick oogie teenage awkwardness, Sokka had seen it all. There was only so much two people who were attracted to each other could do without actually speaking or acting on said attraction. Besides, Sokka had been around for a few of Katara’s crushes now. If it wasn’t obvious to her or anyone else, it definitely was to Sokka.
Katara was in love with Aang.
The only problem was that it was obvious to everyone except Aang and Katara.

Seal of Approval
For Kataang Smut Weekend//Theme: Caught in the Act
@kataang-dungeon
Aang held himself very still, which under the circumstances, was no easy feat. His breath left him in a soft hiss between tight lips as Katara said in a voice that was barely audible:
“Should we … should we leave? Or wait for him to leave? Or …?”
“I ... don’t know. Yeah, let’s just wait. Just a minute. A few minutes.”
Aang had often noticed the small mole right at the nape of Katara’s neck. It was dark and somewhat the shape of a three-quarters moon. Usually, when he was able to see the mole as well as he could now, he was balls-deep inside her from behind and able to kiss the little beauty spot rapturously while Katara moaned beneath him, squirming against fingers that were playing with the slick tab of flesh between her thighs.
And, in fact, there wasn’t much different now. He was indeed balls-deep inside Katara, one hand braced on the marble pillar that had, to this point, been part barrier, part support, and the other preparing to steal around Katara’s hip and make its downward journey.
Aang took a deep breath. His legs were trembling now. He feared that if he didn’t make some sort of decision, his body might decide for him, one way or another.
And things had started off so well!
Aang had had no illusions, and also no real enthusiasm, when he’d been summoned for yet another “crucial summit” in the Earth Kingdom capital city. Generally his meetings with King Kuei were extremely dry and stretched out for hours upon hours -- not necessarily because the Earth Kingdom monarch had much to say -- but because his advisors, which seemed to grow in number each time Aang visited the palace, would go on and on about obscure points of Earth Kingdom law before ever getting to the monkeyfeathering point!
But this time had been different. First off, Kuei had suggested that Aang bring Katara along. Katara had officially become a Master Waterbender and was helping to establish centers of waterbending instruction in Cranefish Town, the rapidly industrializing area where they’d decided to put down roots for the time being. With their busy schedules, it had become more of a challenge for them to spend appreciable time together, so a working trip to Ba Sing Se had been welcome.
Secondly, the meeting had actually gone quite smoothly, for a change. Aang had been impressed with how well King Kuei had handled the head of the Hu Xin Provinces, who claimed that his prerogatives were being infringed upon by other former Fire Nation Colonies.
Lord Liang Huian, flanked by his aides, had come into the meeting frowning. Even his long mustaches looked like they were drooping in disapproval. But King Kuei and Li Shan, the Earth Kingdom’s Minister of State, had immediately worked to soothe His Lordship’s ruffled feathers. The old curmudgeon had listened attentively to the suggestions as to how the Provinces could better integrate themselves with its neighbors and had even cracked a smile or two.
Then a short recess had been called. Aang, finding Katara waterbending out near the fountains in the main courtyard, had persuaded her to stroll with him round the palace, simply wanting to wind down from the early meeting. They passed an empty presence chamber and suddenly Katara’s mouth was at his ear, whispering a suggestion of her own on how best to unwind.
And suddenly they were in the chamber, braced by a convenient pillar of white marble, his leggings around his ankles and Katara’s dress hiked to her waist. Katara faced away from him and embraced the stone column while he feverishly plunged into her, muffling his moans in her shoulder as he felt Katara’s body tremble and himself getting closer and closer to the edge.
And suddenly there was another sound that didn’t come from either of them, which brought things to a screeching halt as both of them, startled, peered around the marble column to see what had made the sound.
… And saw Bosco, King Kuei’s tame bear, confidante, and constant companion, staring at them from the doorway. He blocked the entry almost entirely with his furry bulk, his mild eyes curious.
“Uh …” Aang’s voice was low. “Maybe we should say something? Bosco responds to words, we know that.”
“Something? Something like what?!” Katara’s voice was wavering. She’d been really close, Aang realized. “What do we say? ‘Um, Bosco, could you go away for a minute? You see, we were both about to come, and …’”
Aang snickered at the matter-of-fact quality of Katara’s response, but then he groaned. Laughing had an interesting effect when one had a part of their anatomy buried to the hilt inside the love of their life.
“Aang, d-don’t do that,” Katara said with a groan that made his whole body flush, “unless you want me to ... to explode all over you …”
He mouthed a curse into the air. Wa this really his life? The Avatar who had stopped a war, saved the world and won the heart of his best friend, was now actually being cockblocked by a ... bear?
Aang cleared his throat and poked his head fully around the pillar to make eye contact with Bosco.
“Bosco! Hey buddy …” His voice was a little unsteady, but he smiled, hoping that might help put the animal at ease. “Um … do you mind giving us a minute? We, uh, we’ll be out in a second.”
Bosco’s response to this was a tilt of his head, his jaunty hat managing not to tumble to the floor.
“Bosco? Buddy?”
Aang bit back a moan. He could hear Katara panting and she was starting to tighten around him. In very short while, both of them would be too far gone.
“… P-Please? Just a … just a few minutes …? I promise you that’s all we need.”
The bear blinked and then stood briefly upright. For a terrifying moment, Aang thought Bosco was about to actually come into the room.
But he didn’t. A great paw went inside the Earth Kingdom-green garment he wore and slowly came out holding an object. With a muted roar, Bosco dropped the thing on the floor in front of him and then turned to amble down the corridor and was soon out of sight.
“Uh, what is it Bosco left there?” Aang asked squinting, his head straining forward.
“It looks like … a fish.” Katara sounded amazed. “It is a fish. A dried sunfish. What do you think that’s about?”
“Not sure,” said Aang, resetting himself so that he had better leverage and pressing close to her once more.
He grinned at her yelp of delight and the increased trembling of her legs when he began to move again and his fingers finally found their mark.
“But I think we’d better not look a gift fish in the mouth!”
(*****)
“I think that was a satisfying conclusion, Avatar Aang, don’t you?”
“Hmm? What do you … oh the meeting!”
Aang smiled, slightly embarrassed at being caught unawares.
“Yes, I think so. I’m glad that Lord Liang Huian was agreeable to the terms you suggested,” answered Aang. “Maybe he’ll reconsider keeping the Provinces from joining with the other former colonies that are being annexed into Cranefish Town.”
“He actually complimented me on the cut of my robes when in the past the best he’s had to say about me was that I probably wasn't ‘such a fool as I looked,’” said King Kuei sardonically. “So anything’s possible.”
Aang smiled in sympathy. Lord Liang Huian really was kind of an ass.
He had been back in Kuei’s main audience room, daydreaming a little about the conclusion of his and Katara’s little “break,” while the king’s secretaries had brought out scroll after scroll for Kuei to sign.
Being a waterbender as well as an airbender, earthbender and firebender definitely came in handy, but it was lovely seeing a Master Waterbender at her work. Before he’d gone back into the talks, Katara had bent the fluids out of their clothing so expertly that no one would have ever known that they’d done anything more than take a stirring walk around the grounds.
Grounds … Aang sat up straight as something came to mind. Oh yeah …
“One thing, Your Majesty.” Aang turned to King Kuei with a puzzled smile. “Katara and I were, um, closely examining the beautiful pillars in one of your antechambers. Bosco saw us and he threw a fish on the ground. Usually, he’s devouring fish, not dropping them. Is he all right?”
Kuei looked interested. “Really? Was it a sunfish?”
“As a matter of fact, it was,” said Aang. “A dried sunfish.”
“Ah yes!” The Earth Kingdom monarch nodded. “He has been doing that lately when he sees something that draws his interest. Sunfish are his favorite food and dried sunfish are a particular treat he likes. Leaving them behind is his way of showing approval of whatever it is that’s caught his eye.”
King Kuei’s eyes shone knowingly behind his small glasses.
“You and Master Katara must have been examining the pillars in a very ... unusual manner to have caught Bosco’s attention in that way. Generally he ignores anyone who goes into those chambers.”
Aang’s face flamed hot. King Kuei’s betrothal to an Earth Kingdom noblewoman being announced in a few weeks made Aang consider that after decades under the thumb of his evil councilor Long Feng, the Earth King might have started discovering some of the many pleasures of life he’d missed out on all those years – including ones that might presumably involve the use of stone columns.
“Er, maybe. We noticed that, um, they’re very well made,” said Aang, rubbing the back of his neck and finding an interesting spot on the patterned floor to focus on. “And that’s nice that Bosco … um … approves.”
Kuei tried to hide a smile, and failed pretty miserably at it.
“As do we all, I think, Avatar Aang. Now, perhaps we can discuss what you and Master Katara would prefer for dinner tonight as my guests of honor?” He lifted his eyebrows. “His Lordship has already weighed in, but I think we can agree that dried sunfish are out. We wouldn’t want Bosco getting the wrong idea, hmm?”
Aang couldn’t help but laugh. The man had a point!
