Note
Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💗
omg i love this okay um
ngl i had to think rlly hard abt this! in no particular order
"help me remember (the ghosts of my past)" (FF.net | AO3): inspired by your amazing "teach me how to live my life (because I can't remember how)" of course, my first real attempt at sitting down and trying to tackle Aang's cultural loss post-Rift trilogy and idk it just holds a very special place in my heart as a POC struggling with feeling connection to my heritage/culture
"Not Your Fault, Never Your Fault" (FF.net | AO3): another (a)angsty one tackling both Aang and Katara's traumas during and post-series, the first non-KW fic i really enjoyed writing and was/am proud of
"Kataang Week 2022: Wait For Me" (FF.net | AO3): Kataang being historically impatient but waiting for each other bc they're worth it <3, KW 2022 as a whole is definitely some of my favorite stuff that I've ever written
"Kataang Week 2022: Just Friends" (FF.net | AO3): good old modern AU friends to lovers Kataang
"KVB 2021: Yin & Yang" (FF.net | AO3): an extremely self-indulgent introspection for me on how and why Katara and Aang work so well together, written for the 2021 Kataang Valentine's Bash
thank you so much for the ask!!

Pangu - in which being the Avatar is a burden as heavy as the weight of the world, but as long as Katara is alive, she swears that Aang will never have to carry it alone. Written for Kataang Week 2023 Day 2: Injured.
[Spiderverse]
a thin thread of trust, broken - a study of Gwen, trust, and how it binds her to the other Spiders.
[Crossover AUs]*
The Dishonored Blade (Avatar: The Last Airbender x League of Legends) - in which Zuko must bear the sins of his past during the annual Fire Nation Spirit Festival.
The Darkened Path (Avatar: The Last Airbender x League of Legends) - in which Aang must choose to either let go of his past or be consumed by his regrets.
see the sky and sea (and remember me) (Avatar: The Last Airbender x 大鱼海棠 | Big Fish and Begonia) - in which Katara brings a mortal back to life through magic, but at costs not even she could’ve imagined.
The Last Wind-Breather (Avatar: The Last Airbender x 鬼滅の刃 | Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) - in which Demon Slayer siblings Katara and Sokka find a boy trapped in ice; little do they know that their lives are changed forever. First fic in my Demon Slayer AU series.
*These are not true crossovers, but niche AUs that mixes the worldbuilding + plot of two separate medias. The first media in the parantheses is always the “main” world, with the same characters. The second is the version of AU I will be using.

Zuko: He's Just Better Than Aang🤷🏾‍♀️
Frankly, I think Zuko in season 1 was more altruistic than Aang was during the entire series. Yes, it was the season where he was arguably at his worst, but it's also the season where he risked his life to try to save the man who had tried to murder him. He still had the injuries he sustained in the attempt, and still, Zuko tried to save him.
Meanwhile, Aang didn't go out of his way for anyone. The times he did "try to help", was more about his reputation as Avatar than actually wanting to help in those instances, and he gave up as soon as it got too hard. Remember The Great Divide? Zuko went with Sokka on a suicide mission to try and save Hakkoda. Aang wanted to run off and go play the day after Hakkoda risked his life to save him. Let that sink in. The father of the girl he allegedly "loves" has been captured trying to save Aang's life, his friends are distraught, and Aang can't muster up the empathy to sit with them to plan the next move. Not even to get in Katara's good graces. But I'm supposed to believe that Katara would realistically choose Aang over Zuko? Like...

Katara: Oh, that's such a pretty flower! Zuko: It's dragon lotus. It's one of my favorites. Katara: Did you get it for Mai? Zuko: er…No. Flowers aren't really her thing. Some guy was giving them out on the street to celebrate the end of the war, and well… Katara: I should see if I can get one then. Zuko: He's probably gone by now, but here, you can have this one. Katara: It's yours, though. I can't take it. Zuko: Please do! Uncle always says that the greatest aspiration of any flower is to adorn a pretty woman. Er…that is…I didn't mean to say that… Not that you aren't pretty, I'm just not…you know…it wasn't a come on Katara: trying not to laugh Don't hurt yourself, Zuko. I get it. I'll take the flower. Thank you! It smells wonderful! Zuko: In the Fire Nation, women wear these in their hair. Katara: Oh? Tucks flower behind her ear Like that? Zuko: Yes, but I think it'll be more secure in your bun. May I?….There. That's perfect. And Uncle was right

I saw one of your post from a couple of weeks ago where you mentioned you are a Christian. How can you support abortion?
Well, first of all, pro-choice isn't pro-abortion. I just want to make sure that's clear. I don't think anyone is pro-abortion for abortion's sake. Second, I chose to be a Christian. I had to study and pray and get advice and really weigh my decision before I got baptized, and it was months before I finally made my choice (and I have a few friends who took years to make that decision). There's a lot that I do or don't do because I'm a Christian and I hold the bible as my standard, but I had a choice in the matter. Now, I am abstinent because I believe sex is for marriage, and I only date men who agree. But not everyone in this country is a Christian. Not everyone chooses abstinence or celibacy. Not everyone wants a child. Not everyone should have children. None of that is my business.
Who am I to force the standards I chose onto someone who didn't choose them? And who am I to force a life-altering decision on someone after I was given so much agency on my own life-altering decision? I truly believe that banning abortion will do more harm than good in the long run, especially if these nuance-free pro-life radicals actually succeed in criminalizing contraceptives and birth control, and in completely getting sex ed taken out of schools. Which is looking likelier by the hour.

Here's the thing that gets me about the whole "Zutara is anti-feminist" take. Their relationship in canon is platonically supportive after they reconcile. Before that, they met as enemies in battle, yes, but there was nothing inherently sexist in how Zuko interacted with Katara, especially in comparison to how she was treated by her own friends and allies, and even her own brother.
Romantic Zutara is completely fan-created (canon chemistry notwithstanding), and a large portion (if not most) of the creators, as far as I can tell, identify as women. In those fan creations, Katara gets to be a world leader who is loved by a supportive man who adores her strength and is there for her in her weak moments. Zutara the ship is at its core very feminine. Also, except for making the romance overt instead of subtextual, that's pretty much how Zuko treated her in canon after they became friends. Compare that to what Katara is reduced to in the actual canon, and it's hard to understand why anyone would think that of the two ships Zutara is the one that is anti-feminist and bad for Katara.

My #1 post of 2022
You know, I often lament the fact that Katara lost out on a supportive partner who respected and trusted her when Zutara didn't happen, but Zuko lost out, too. He lost out on marrying into a family that would have given him the love, encouragement and support that they gave each other. Hakoda, Sokka and Bato would have taken such joy in introducing Zuko to the SWT customs that were handed down from father to son for generations. Hakoda would have absolutely given him as much advice as he could as a leader in his own right balancing the duties of chiefdom and family. Kanna would have grown to love this uncertain boy king who didn't think it was a humiliation to help her around the home. He missed out on having a wife who would back him up and advise him as he figured out how to be the leader his country needed. No matter how bad things got in the Fire Nation, he would have had a tight-knit family support group to make sure he got through it.
When you take a step back and look at all the ways Katara and Zuko would have filled in for what the other was missing, I get annoyed all over again that all that parallel and convergent development was set aside for pairings that were somehow the blandest and most toxic that anyone on that writing team could have come up with. It is so clear that Zutara was supposed to be endgame and they got robbed for Bryke's pet ship.

2022 Writing Year in Review
Yeah, I know it's 2023 already. I'm just now finding a smidge of time to get to the asks/ask games/etc. that I've gotten bc the holidays have been so busy. Thank you @benwvatt and @chocomd for the tag!
1. Number of stories posted to Ao3: 13! one of those was started in 2021 though with the last chapter of it posted in 2022, so 12 fics (+ one chapter) written entirely in 2022
2. Word count this year: 105,816 according to ao3
3. Fandoms I wrote for: Avatar: The Last Airbender/Avatar: Legend of Korra (which I tag most of my adult kataang stories as, especially if they include cloud-babies or spice, to be safe, even though I know it is between the two series. But tagging adult kataang as only AtLA seems to invite the pedo-accusations, despite the fact that we KNOW Aang and Katara grew up and had babies together which means they did the deed at least a few times, but ya know... that's a rant for another day.)
4. Pairings: Aang/Katara
5. Stories with the most:
Kudos: Unspoken, Undeniable (rated T)
Bookmarks: Growing Pains (rated E)
Comment threads: UU and then GP, because they are both multi-chap stories. After that, though, it was Free as the Wind (rated T) which is still *technically* 2 chapters although I only decided to split it in two at the last minute since it was so long for ease of reading. It is more of a one-shot in my head still.
Word count: UU, definitely, at 44,409 (51,354 if you include the epilogue)
6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): Probably UU, because it was the first ever intentional multi-chap that I planned out, wrote out, and finished, all in the span of this year!
7.   Work I’m least proud of (and why): Probably Silence and Sparrowkeets (rated T). I wrote it for kataang week theme quiet moments/healing, and while I still do like a lot of elements of the story that I incorporated, it just falls a little flat for me for some reason.
8.   Share or describe a favorite review you received: Some of my favorite reviews this year have been from @kataangisforlovers and @chocomd, because they always manage to see the underlying themes I'm pulling in or the things about the AtLA world that I'm trying to expose (often having to do with canon racism). I cannot express how much I have valued their input, both on ao3 comments and behind the scenes.
9.   A time when writing was really, really hard: omg, so many times. I have had a harder time separating from my daily life stressors in order to immerse myself in my writing. Part of that has been guilt over what I *could* be accomplishing instead of writing. And I have been more productive irl. There were also a few times where fandom drama really felt like it was imploding and I wasn't sure I *wanted* to write anymore. And interaction has definitely been lower this year. Overall though I still have things to say about kataang and their relationship and their family and Aang and Katara as individuals with a lot of trauma, so I keep writing when I can.
10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: Absolutely hands down the entire second chapter of Free as the Wind. I've said it before, but I did not ever want to go there as an author. It's been done so many times and there are too many cultural elements that I was afraid of misusing or appropriating or being accidentally insensitive about. So I did NOT want to write that ever ever ever. But once I started with the "sneaking off" prompt, thinking it was going to be a sweet and probably a little spicy little one-shot, the characters took me in an entirely different direction and I wound up writing myself into a corner where that was the only way out. I'm still half waiting for an angry comment or dm one day, telling me how I messed it up.
11. A favorite excerpt of your writing:  It's long, but I love this mashup of dialogue and introspection from chapter 5 of UU:
“I could sense them still looking at us,” he explained in a whisper. He turned them out of the palace walkway and they continued down the streets of the Inner Ring and out towards their home. “I’m sorry if that was too much, I just wanted…”
“No, it wasn’t too much at all,” she interrupted, trying desperately to quell… whatever it was that was making her body tingle and her heart race and her mind spin. She felt her heart dropping down to the soles of her feet at the realization that this was all for the press. You need to get your feelings back under control, she scolded herself. This was pretend and you know it. “I didn’t realize they were still watching us—good catch.”
“Earthbending,” he said simply and shrugged.
“I know,” she said, feeling incredibly awkward. How was she going to go back to being just his friend when they were alone, now? To go back to not expecting him to kiss her hair or wrap his arm around her or press his body so deliciously against hers…
They finished their walk back to the house in silence. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it was different. She wasn’t sure where they stood or what he was thinking, and she was afraid to ask. He walked her to her door, and things started to feel almost normal again when he leaned down for a hug. “Thanks again, Katara. For everything,” he murmured in her ear. She shivered.
“Anytime, Aang. Goodnight,” she said as she walked into her room and closed the door. She exhaled heavily and pressed her forehead against the ornate wood, not knowing that Aang was doing the exact same thing on the other side.
12. How did you grow as a writer this year: I think I learned to show more, and to be more descriptive of the scenery and surroundings. I'm still working on it, but I think I did better than last year!
13. How do you hope to grow next year: I hope to be able to add more metaphor, symbolism, and overall meaning into said descriptions. I am also hoping to branch out and write out of my comfort zone a bit (maybe something that is not kataang/aang/katara centric? Maybe original fiction? WHO KNOWS). I was hoping to use fic-writing to kind of run the rust off the rails of my writing skills and get back to writing original fiction or creative non-fiction, which had been my life's dream and something I studied for a bit in school, but that takes a kind of bravery and vulnerability I'm not sure I have in me, yet.
14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):
@coyotelemon was my beta for UU and absolutely pushed me to grow in ways I could not have without her help. The number of times she had to write "PAINT MOAR" in the comments of my googledoc because I had completely left out the details, and the number of ideas she came up with when I was stuck show the sheer impact she had on this work, and I could not have done it without her <3
15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: Absolutely. Ties That Bind (rated G), my Katara Week piece for the prompt "Katara and her family" included a lot of elements of parenting and connecting with family that I have experienced in my own life. But pieces of my life show up in all areas of my writing.
16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: I don't think I have any *new* wisdom. Just keep reading, keep writing, and keep experimenting with those elements you love from your favorite stories. Don't be afraid to research and take risks. And find your people who will help you and cheer you on when you're feeling discouraged.
17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: I'd really like to write that kataang/cloud-babies mixed race fic. I have bits and pieces, but as I've stated before what's really holding me back is research. Fingers crossed!
18. Tag some writers whose answers you’d like to read: I know it's 2023 now, but if you're so inclined... @coyotelemon, @shameaboutthedilettantism, @anervoussapphic, @itsmoonpeaches, @juicypersimmon, @cats-and-metersticks, @northerngoshawk... or anyone else who wants to do it!

2022 Writing Year in Review
thank you for the tag @northerngoshawk!! 💕
1. Number of stories posted to AO3: 18
2. Word count this year: 172,404 words! we could get really technical and subtract the word counts for the fics i technically wrote in 2021 but typed/posted in 2022, but that’s a lot of work i don’t feel like doing lol
3. Fandoms I wrote for: ATLA, Law & Order, MCU (+ Venom), Monk, and Medium. not sure i want to know what that says about me...
4. Pairings: petermj (mcu), allison/joe (medium), kincoy (claire/jack from l&o), zukaang (atla), tylara (atla), mjflash (mcu), and kataang (atla). a nice mixture!
5. Stories with the most:
Kudos: Walls (my mj&flash friendship fic) comes in first with 114 kudos
Bookmarks: Walls comes out on top again with 29 bookmarks!
Comment threads: this thing of darkness (i acknowledge mine), my mjflash + venom!flash fic, has the most comment threads by far with 47, the result of a small but loyal following of readers who made my day every time they commented 💛
Word count: by a hair, The Wrong Note (my monk x medium crossover) has the highest word count at 37,630 words! this thing of darkness (i acknowledge mine) has 37,011 words
6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): im proud of all my works for different reasons! today i shall spotlight my children will listen series, consisting of two waterbending-centric fics narrated by kanna and katara respectively; both stories explore cultural loss and intergenerational trauma. i’d never written companion pieces prior to that point, so im proud of how i was able to construct those parallel narratives! i also had a blast reworking one of my favorite shel silverstein poems to weave throughout the story
7. Work I’m least proud of (and why): ?? this is a silly question. fanfic is my hobby, im not writing it for journal publication. onto the next one!
8. Share or describe a favorite review you received: literally Every review i got on the children will listen series; i had no idea how impactful those fics would be or how many people would relate to it, but im so glad i ended up writing and publishing them! i also have to shoutout ocean’s review on time apart, time together (the tylara fic i wrote for her bday 💛) bc she truly Understood that story through and through, and i am equal parts delighted and relieved that she did (since it was written for her 💕)
9. A time when writing was really, really hard: i mean, im a college student. i almost never write fic during the semester, lol. i Literally haven’t written fic since,,,, august 2022. (technically i could have written some fic these past few weeks BUT it’s the holidays so i’ve been spending time with family + revising my research paper + loosely working on some original writing)
10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: BRUH all of my law & order fics surprised me 😭 come on, babe (why don’t we paint the town?) contains Thee sexiest scene i’ve ever written; find a flask (we’re playing fast and loose) is written SOLELY from jack’s pov (a 50-year-old white man, how low have i fallen); and it was more than worth it (my kincoy magnum opus) was my first foray into nonlinear storytelling. all in all, 2022 was quite an experimental year for me!
11. A favorite excerpt of your writing: i’ve talked to death my favorite excerpt from it was more than worth it, so instead i’ll spotlight an excerpt from if memories could fade away (my mj birthday fic):
Ned sticks his tongue out at her, and MJ responds in turn before opening the door anyway, because he’s Ned and she’s MJ and it’s always been just them, the two of them, eight years going on eighteen.
“Damn, girl, you live like this?” Ned says as he enters, watching where he steps so he doesn’t trip over one of her many piles of everything—textbooks, clothes, journals, old CDs too scratched to use that will soon become the basis of MJ’s next art project: voices we no longer hear.
She remembers getting each CD, starting with Let Go on her tenth birthday, back when she lived in New Orleans and always kept her curly brown hair in symmetrical cornrows or cropped at the base of her neck because of the suffocating humidity. She remembers taking each CD and ripping the music to her computer so her dad could move it onto her tiny red MP3 player for the long, long ride to Queens that began the next day. She remembers two CDs breaking during the drive and one CD breaking when they arrived because she threw it at the wall of her empty new room, angry, so angry she’d been ripped from her home like music from a shiny silver disc and it wasn’t fair, it wasn’t fair—
“You see, guests usually stay downstairs,” MJ teases, pushing aside a pile of clothes so Ned has room to sit on her bed. She takes a seat at her desk, spinning the chair around to face her dearest friend. “If I’d known you were planning to invade my personal space, I might have considered making my living arrangements more presentable.”
Ned snickers. “Considered, and then not done a damn thing about them?”
MJ winks at him. “You know me so well.”
Ned has known her so long, known her messy room, known her impenetrable walls, known her since she was thrown into a new school in a new city expected to make new friends when Michelle knew even at ten that would never happen, not that year, because 5th graders had already chosen their loyal companions five, six, seven years ago and there was no room for a Black girl to fit into a white noise machine that already hummed along without her.
Her parents sent her to school anyway. She must not have been persuasive enough.
MJ MY BELOVED!!! 🥺💛 i enjoyed playing with sentence length/rhythm and metaphors/similes in this fic, and i think this excerpt in particular captures that experimentation
12. How did you grow as a writer this year: hmmmm well i tried my hand at some action sequences in this thing of darkness (i acknowledge mine), which probably counts for something. and like i already mentioned, it was more than worth it was my first foray into nonlinear storytelling (and a lot of people told me they enjoyed it!) + if memories could fade away involved stylistic experimentation. in other words, i think i grew as a writer simply by letting myself try new things, from how i told stories to what content i included within them!
13. How do you hope to grow next year: i just want to write more, honestly. the more i write, the more i can try, and hopefully the more i’ll grow! to be more specific, i want to try my hand at some sci-fi/near-future dystopian original stories (à la kazuo ishiguro’s klara and the sun)
14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): probably ocean and ambi! they always put up with my fic-related ramblings, are wonderful to bounce ideas off of, and by virtue of their existence (and enthusiasm) remind me why i love writing fic in the first place 💛 in terms of non-tumblr influences, haha, reading the promise by damon galgut was a GAME CHANGER for me. third person omniscient with no quotation marks?? the entire story is an allegory for post-apartheid south africa?? a stylistic and thematic MASTERPIECE. i can only dream of writing a novel with such artistic daring
15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: lol this thing of darkness (i acknowledge mine) is packedTM with shakespeare references and milton jokes; if memories could fade away explicitly mentions one of avril lavigne’s albums (seen in the provided excerpt); won’t you hang a picture? references nancy drew; and Walls involves a whole project about the picture of dorian gray. when narratively appropriate, i never hesitate to sneak in my own interests 😂
16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: write for fun! write what you love! don’t be afraid to experiment! listen to the incredibles soundtrack while you write! read, read, read! write with a cat on your lap! never delete anything! write when you’re inspired and write when you’re not! if it brings you joy to create, then what you create is good enough!
17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: honestly, i want to focus on my original writing and my research more, so i may not have as much time for fic. that said, i hope to write:
a sequel to this thing of darkness (i acknowledge mine)
the next part of my mcu medium!au
ml fic in general
atla fic in general
time will tell!
18. Tag some writers whose answers you’d like to read: i know a lot of people have been tagged for this already, so apologies if im bombarding you or if you’ve already done this! i’ll tag @justoceanmyth, @ambivalentmarvel, @seek--rest, and @shifuaang :)

Arrows and Braids
Rating: G
Word count: 1872
Genre: Mostly fluff, with very mild hurt/comfort
Story summary: When Katara gives Aang a haircut, they both remember what they had given up. Missing scene oneshot.
————–
Aang was staring at a pair of scissors in his hand when Katara walked over.
“What are you doing with Sokka’s scissors?” she asked.
He hefted the shears, the blades of fine Fire Nation steel a respectable weight in his hand. They had also been expensive. Fortunately, the wealth of coins from Toph’s scams had more than covered the cost. But every time Sokka pulled out the shears to trim his wolf tail, Katara never failed to slide in a jab about how they wouldn’t need to ration their food so much if he had gotten the cheaper scissors instead.
“My hair is growing out, and it’s making my ears itch.” He scratched the top of his ear. Talking about his ears somehow made them even more itchy. “My forehead, too. And the back of my neck.” He scratched at each spot in turn. “Everywhere, really.”
“If you want, I can cut your hair for you,” Katara said.

Without Water
Written for Kataang Week 2022 @kataang-week for Day 6: Quiet Moments/Healing Techniques
Rating: T for descriptions of physical injury (but nothing too graphic)
Genre: Hurt/comfort, Kataangst
Story summary: Katara struggles to heal Aang after he is struck down by lightning. Five times she can never seem to do enough, and one time she discovers she is everything he needs. Or, the story of how the ordeal of healing Aang almost breaks Katara before she learns how to hope again.
————–
The first thing Katara did when she set foot on her father’s ship was to look for water.
“Make sure you always have water on hand,” Yagoda had once instructed her. “For without water, a healer’s bending is useless.”
She had given up Aang to her brother’s care when Appa landed them at Chameleon Bay. She didn’t want to leave him, not when he was in such a vulnerable state. But she had to leave him if she wanted to save him.
Katara found the barrels of drinking water, half of them already drained dry. The man in blue-dyed furs who was stationed by the barrels—to guard the water, no doubt—glowered when her eyes widened at the sight of liquid glistening between the barrel rims and lids. But before he could utter a word, she had siphoned the water into a bucket and dashed away.
Drinking water had to be rationed until the next rain, and Katara had taken more than her fair share.
Everyone can stand to be a little thirsty, she thought as she ran. Aang needs this water more than any of us do.

Close to You
Rating: G
Word count: 1703
Genre: Fluff with a side of hurt/comfort
Story summary: Katara seeks out Aang when she has trouble sleeping. Missing scene oneshot, set after The Runaway (S3 E07).
————–
Aang was no Toph, but he felt Katara walking over before he saw her.
He could hardly see her, anyway. Their campfire had burned out, and the moonless night had cast the land into near-total darkness. Only the faint glow from the stars provided any light to see by. Even then, he could only make out vague shadows and silhouettes.
So he relied on his feet. Lying with his soles flat against a bristly carpet of grass, he listened for vibrations in the earth. Everyone had their own pattern of movement. He could feel Toph tossing in her sleep and Sokka snoring—well, that part he could hear, too. But the vibrations that he recognized without a doubt and listened to the most belonged to Katara.
She came to a halt several armlengths away, clutching a bundle under her arm. “Hey, Aang? Are you still awake?”
“I’m still awake,” he said, sitting up. “What’s up?”
“I can’t sleep. Do you mind if I…talk to you for a bit?”

In The Sun
Rating: G
Word count: 1724
Genre: Pure Fluff
Story summary: When Aang convinces Katara to dry off in the sun after waterbending practice, a tickle fight ensues. Missing scene oneshot.
————–
Katara launched several balls of ice into the air, and Aang neatly shot down each one with bursts of water from his own hands. He beamed a satisfied smile as the last ball splashed back into the pond.
“That was some great work, Aang. Why don’t we call it a day,” Katara said. She climbed out of the pond, water dripping from her bare arms and legs, and sat down on the grass.
Aang joined her as she wrung the water out of her thick mane of hair. She lifted her hands to bend away the remaining moisture when he closed his hand around her wrist.
“Wait. I have an idea,” he said when she gave him a questioning look. “Why don’t we dry off in the sun?”

Drag You Down
Rating: G
Genre: Drama, romance, angst
Chapter: 1 of 16?
Story summary: After breaking up, Aang and Katara go their separate ways. But when unexpected events throw them back together, they have a hard time moving on—even if moving on is what’s best for themselves, and for each other.
First line of this chapter inspired by @kataang-prompts
————–
“I wish I had never followed you out to the balcony that day,” Katara said.
Aang stopped breathing. His chest constricted, her words like shards of ice piercing his heart.
He knew this day was coming. He didn’t want to believe it, but he knew.
They stood on the docks of Hai Bian, the main port city to the east of Ba Sing Se. The southbound ship that Katara was about to board creaked as it rose and fell with the gentle waves of the bay. She was looking down at her hands, twisting her fingers together, a nervous habit of hers. A brisk autumn breeze blew the braided loops of hair into her face, and she brushed them to the side just as she had done so many times before. She caught her lower lip in her teeth in that way she did when she was trying not to cry.
“I wish we had been friends from the beginning. Nothing more.”

Special thanks to Mod Atarah ( @penguinsledder ) for the lovely gif!
What is Kataang Week?
Kataang Week is when we, as a corner of the fandom, celebrate the ship Kataang! The prompts for Kataang Week 2021 were selected through four rounds of voting over the last few weeks and all prompts were submitted by Tumblr users.
Cool, when is it?
Summer Kataang Week 2021 starts on Monday, July 26th - a little over six weeks from today - and ends on Monday, August 2nd.
How do I participate?
The most common ways to participate are by creating art or writing a fic and posting it online. Some people try and create something for every day while others only fill one or two prompts.
As always, we want to reassure you that it’s perfectly okay not to do every prompt! We just hope to have lovely pieces to share on each day.
But I can’t draw or write!
That’s totally fine - there are more ways to participate! You can sing a song, create a graphic, write a poem - just about anything really. You can also show your support by reblogging and liking other people’s contributions.
What are the prompts?
The following will be the running order for Kataang Week 2021:
Height Difference - Monday July 26th
Blending Cultures - Tuesday July 27th
Missing Scenes/Post-Canon - Wednesday July 28th
Role Swap - Thursday July 29th
Healing - Friday July 30th
Tease - Saturday July 31st
The Sea & The Sky/Soulmate AU - Sunday August 1st
Free Day - Monday August 2nd
*Missing Scenes and Post-Canon, as well as The Sea & The Sky and Soulmate AU were tied with votes, so instead of flipping a coin/deciding on my own, I am including both tied prompts as options. You can incorporate one or both prompts for each day. And I am also doing this because I see no advantage to any additional rounds of voting and further delays.
**And as always, there is a Free Day at the end of the week.  You can use this day to post anything you’d like!  It can be a prompt that didn’t receive enough votes or something you’ve been wanting to work on, anything goes!
How should I tag my work?
The easiest way for us to find your work so we can reblog it to this blog is by using the tag “kataang week”. Using “kataang” and “kataangtag” also help. You must tag one of the three in your first five tags otherwise it doesn’t appear in the search.
Sometimes even properly tagged posts may not appear when we search the tags, so if you do not see your content reblogged, please let us know.
Once we’ve reblogged it to this blog we add our own tags (a prompt tag and a user tag) for easy organization.  This means we can find all the work for one prompt or all the work from one user in one easy click (this also means that if you have changed your username since participating last year you need to let us know so we can update your tag!).
Can I post my stuff other places online too?
Of course you can!
Why six weeks?  Is that enough time?
Traditionally, we like to provide our content creators seven weeks (for the seven prompts) to create quality content. Kataang Week is also traditionally held in the last week of July.
Delays in voting and preparations were caused by a myriad of reasons this year, but ultimately falls entirely on me (Mod Dan) and I apologize for not having everything ready for the seven week mark.
If you are unable to complete a prompt in time, please do not fret.  You can alert this blog by mentioning it in your post (ex. @kataang-week ) or messaging one of the mods and your content will still be shared even if it is a week (or a month - or sometimes more!) late.
We also like to post WIP for Kataang Week and encourage everyone else to do so as well - we reblog it here for motivation!
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, don’t hesitate to send an ask. Don’t forget to reblog this as well to help spread the word!
Good luck, Kataangers, and happy content creating! :) - The Mods

What Happens When You Assume
Written for @kataang-week
(I know, I know, it's late because my life kind of got consumed by the Olympics)
Day 6: "Tease"
Words: 1,081
Read on AO3
Read on FF.net
Summary: Katara finds out about a piece of Aang's past that she doesn't care for at all.
********
Katara slammed the door shut and nearly collapsed from exhaustion, leaning against the door to catch her breath. It only took a few seconds for her to start to calm down. The frozen block of ice at the bottom of the world would always be her home, but this house in Ba Sing Se that she shared with her friends and boyfriend had still become a refuge for her.
As she felt more at peace, she smiled to herself as she thought that word. Boyfriend. It had been months since the end of the war, but she still had trouble believing that she had gotten such a happy ending.
"You okay?" she heard the boy in question ask, and she opened her eyes and saw him looking at her from the doorway to their living room, his face full of concern.
"Oh, nothing new," she waved him off, "just the usual reporters and scholars wanting to know everything. Even when I don't wear Water Tribe clothes, I'm probably the only girl in the city with this skin tone, so it's not hard to get recognized as the Avatar's girlfriend."
"Well, as much as I love the whole world knowing you're my girlfriend, I'm sorry that it gives you so much trouble," said Aang sadly.
"Don't start that, you're more than worth it," said Katara, giving him a kiss. "Make it up to me by brewing me some tea."
"Way ahead of you," he said proudly.
They went into the kitchen, where a pot of tea was already sitting on the table. The rest of the table was taken up by piles and piles of books and scrolls that Aang was studying: the entire history of the last one hundred years of the Earth kingdom. Aang was determined to stop being caught off-guard during negotiations by some deeply important piece of context that made his suggestions unacceptable.
"In case you've forgotten already, I fought against an evil empire with you," said Katara playfully, "So I think I can handle a few biographers wanting every detail of the Avatar's life."
Aang frowned as he started pouring them tea. "You know, I would hope that there's still important things about my life coming. Seems a bit early to start writing my biography."
"Well, a lot of these people aren't interested in anything important, silly," Katara laughed. "They're more after gossip fuel. Does the Avatar have any annoying habits? Is he tortured and broody from the war? What's his favorite food? How was his first kiss?"
"Well I'll show them broody, if they keep sticking their nose into stuff like that," Aang grumbled, pouring his own tea.
"Oh, rest assured, I'll tell anyone who asks that it was dazzling," said Katara lovingly.
Aang snorted as he went back to reading his scrolls. "Well, I wouldn't say that, there's no need to lie to them."
Katara huffed indignantly, "Oh, excuse me, Mister Avatar, were my kissing skills not 'dazzling' enough for you?"
"Oh no no," he said quickly, still not looking up at her, "Our first kiss was amazing, once I stopped comparing kissing you to dying. My first kiss ever was a lot more embarrassing."
Aang reached for his own cup of tea and took a sip. The loud slurping sound drew his attention to how oddly quiet the room had gotten. He looked up at his girlfriend and flinched backward when he saw the look on her face. Her mouth was gaping open and her eyes were flashing dangerously.
"What?" he asked, confused.
"Are you kidding me!?" Katara shrieked. "You're not just messing with me? The cave really wasn't your first kiss?"
Aang just blinked at her for several moments, before he broke into a disbelieving grin. "I...never said that it was?" he chuckled.
"This isn't funny!" said Katara, jumping to her feet. "When exactly were you planning on telling me this!?"
"Well I'm telling you now, it's never come up before!" said Aang defensively, putting up his hands. "What did I do to imply you were my first kiss?"
"You didn't have to do anything!" said Katara, rolling her eyes. "That's the natural—"
She suddenly stopped herself and bit her lip. Aang's eyebrows shot up and he gave a smug smirk.
"What was that?"
"Nothing."
"No, no, go on, finish that sentence," Aang teased, crossing his arms and sitting back. "You assumed that you were my first kiss, because who would actually want to kiss me, if not to just escape a magical cave?"
"That's not what I—"
"And of course if the beautiful and popular Katara hadn't had her first kiss by then, then surely short and dorky Aang wouldn't have, since you're so out of my league."
"Shut up!"
"If only all those fans and biographers knew the truth," Aang lamented sadly. "People think that the Avatar is this spiritually pure being, but to my shame, I used my extensive romantic experience to take advantage of an innocent, naive Water Tribe girl—"
He was cut off by a jet of water hitting him in the face, soaking him and filling his open mouth.
He spat out Katara's bending water and raised his eyebrows at her, as she continued to glare at him with her arms crossed.
"Really?" he asked pointedly.
"Don't tease me," said Katara quietly, pouting her lip, but Aang could tell she was trying not to laugh.
He sighed, stood up, bent the water off of him, and wrapped his arms around his girlfriend's waist.
"Would it help to know that my first kiss was only because of a dare?" he asked. "She caught me after a game of airball, her group of friends giggling behind her, and she just grabbed me and pressed her face against mine in front of half the Southern Temple."
"Oh, poor you," said Katara, rolling her eyes.
"Let me finish," said Aang. "I was so shocked that I launched myself into the air, landing in the bisons' feeding trough, and knocking her back into a fountain. She ran off with her friends crying. Nobody would let me live that down for months."
Katara didn't meet his eye, but she snorted in laughter and draped her arms over his shoulders. "Okay, yeah, that does make it a bit better."
"So, tragically, you weren't the first girl I ever kissed," Aang sighed, "could you settle for being the last girl I ever kiss?"
"Hmm. Deal," Katara whispered, and got a head start on it.

Kataang week day 1: height difference
I’m really excited to start off kataang week with one of my favourite aspects of their relationship!
One of the best parts of there relationship is the fact that both of them get to experience being the tallest and shortest one in the relationship:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the fortune teller, Katara says that she would like a tall husband
Tumblr media
Which in the end she does get since Aang end up being the tallest of the whole gaang
Tumblr media
However I like to think that Katara couldn’t help but feeling a bit disappointed when Aang finally passed her. I feel like she would of liked and gotten used to being the tallest in their relationship.
Anyways I think it’s really nice that Aang and Katara grew together. They got to experience both sides of the relationship which many couples don’t really get to do

Safe Harbor
Summary: After everyone has safely returned from their own battles, Katara realizes she's been having trouble sleeping if she's not near Aang and decides to confont her fears with a late-night talk. Written for @kataang-week day 5 prompt: healing.
WC: 1.7k | ao3 | ffn
The sky was dark around the Fire Palace as Katara tossed and turned in her overly large bed. She was relieved to have her brother and friends back safe from their own battles, and after an afternoon full of healing and hugging and even some tears, she was exhausted, but she was still struggling to find sleep. It had been this way for almost a week, if she were honest with herself. Ever since Aang had disappeared before the comet.
Katara sighed as she sat up in her bed, giving up for the time being, and pulled her robe over her shoulders. The floor was surprisingly cold when her feet touched down, despite the near-suffocating heat in the air. She quietly turned the knob on her door and poked her head out, checking for guards. They still made her a little nervous, even if Zuko assured her that any remaining staff was on their side, now.
Finding nothing but silence in the empty hall, she slipped out of her room and padded across to the room she knew Aang was staying in. She could still see candlelight flickering under the door, and breathed a sigh of relief that he was still up, too. During their travels, they had often sought each other out in the middle of the night, either due to nightmares or just to talk through things that had happened during the day, and she hoped he wouldn’t mind her showing up now. Despite the awkwardness that had grown between them since their kiss on the Day of Black Sun, and then again on Ember Island, he was still her best friend. And deep in her heart she knew he was more than that, too. Maybe talking with him would help.
She knocked on his door as quietly as she could while still hoping he could hear her. Before she could finish her third knock, the door was opening, revealing a tired but smiling Aang on the other side.
“I felt you coming,” he said quickly, when he noticed the quizzical look on her face at his almost immediate response. “Earthbending…” His hand was on the back of his neck and her mouth pulled into a smile of its own accord. Spirits, he was cute when he did that.
“Is it… is it okay if I come in?” Katara asked, glancing down the hallway again to make sure nobody else was coming.
Aang’s face reddened a bit--or was that just a trick of the candlelight? “Oh! Oh, yeah. Of course!” He opened the door wider for her to enter, and then shut it quietly behind her, leaning his back against it and looking anywhere but at her.
Katara placed a hand on his, which was still resting on the door handle, and smiled encouragingly at him. He finally met her eyes and returned the grin. She had always been able to bring him out of whatever emotional turmoil he was in, even those times, like now, when she was the cause of it. When their eyes connected it was always just the two of them, in that moment. She took his hand off the door and gently laced her fingers through his, pulling him towards the cushions that were in the center of the room. She noticed his room was much more spacious than the others she’d seen, but Aang deserved it, even if he would never want or ask for special treatment. He deserved so much more than that.
“I missed you so much,” she whispered, pulling him into a quick hug before sitting down on the plush red cushions. She knew she was blushing a bit, but for some reason it no longer bothered her. “I… I haven’t been able to sleep since you left.”
Aang’s eyes widened to an almost comical degree as he sat down himself, and she would have laughed if she didn’t feel like she was bearing a part of her soul to him that she hadn’t fully explored herself, yet.
“I just… I think I got used to us sleeping all together while we were traveling, but it was more than that, too. After…” She took a deep, steadying breath. She needed to get this out without dissolving into tears. She needed him to know. “After Ba Sing Se, I was so scared I would lose you again. And… when you were unconscious I stayed in your room every night, and then we were all camping together again in the Fire Nation and at the Temple and… and I think I got used to being able to hear you breathing. I think I needed it. To know you were okay. But then you were gone, and…” she couldn’t help the sob that broke through there, but she didn’t need to. Not anymore.
Aang’s arms were around her and she was finally able to let the tears flow freely. He had never, ever judged her for expressing her feelings, even when everyone else seemed to think she was going too far. The safety and overwhelming love she felt in his arms was something she hadn’t felt since her mother was alive and her family was happy together; since she was young enough to be unaware of the horrors of war. It was like his hug was squeezing the various pieces of her heart back together, where they were meant to be all along. Like he was healing her.
“I love you,” she whispered, when she had finally caught her breath again. She kept her face pressed to his shoulder. She wasn’t sure if she could look at him yet; she felt so exposed. But she also felt… lighter somehow, now that it was out in the open. He was her safe harbor in the storm of her emotions. So many times she had brought him calm, but now he was doing the same for her. “I know the world needs you, but I want you to know that I need you, too. And I don’t… I still don’t know what this is--what we are--but I… I know I can’t be without you again. I just want to stay here, in your arms, forever. I feel so safe.”
Aang’s head was reeling from all that she had just admitted to him, but he was trying to will his mouth to speak. He knew the soft circles he was tracing on her back weren’t enough to convey what she meant to him, but for some reason all the words were stuck in his throat, with his heart, which had floated up there when she told him she loved him.
Finally, just when she was beginning to think she’d said too much, he found his voice again. “You can stay here as long as you want,” he said, pulling back to look at her watery eyes. He kept one hand on her shoulder and the other lightly bent her tears from her face with a smile. “I love you, too, Katara. I’ve been trying to tell you for so long, but…”
“I’ve known,” she interrupted him when she saw his eyes turn from her and the worry lines start to appear as he crinkled his forehead. “I’ve always known. And… I’ve always loved you, too, even if I didn’t know what this feeling was, at first. I was just so scared of losing you.” Her hand came up to cup his face and his eyes swung back to hers like magnets. They had always been connected like this. She wondered if they had been connected from the moment she was born, or maybe even before. But she knew without a doubt that she was destined to find him; to help him; to love him. That she would always stand by him, whether as a friend, or as something more.
“Is it… is it okay if I sleep here?” she asked, a little hesitantly, despite her earlier admission. “I can just stay here on the pillows, and you can sleep on the bed, if you’ll be more comfortable. I just… I just need to be near you, tonight.” And maybe every night, she thought, but she kept that to herself for now.
“Here,” Aang took a moment to adjust the cushions around them into a little nest, before laying back and pulling her to him. She rested her head on his chest and listened to the soft thump-thump of his heart. The sound was like the glue where his earlier hug had been the clamp; her heart felt whole in places she hadn’t realized had been broken, before. She sighed and melted into him, then turned her face up to meet his stormy eyes, trying to discern what he was thinking. She didn’t see any of the apprehension or awkwardness that had been present for weeks, so even though she couldn’t read his thoughts, she still felt overwhelming relief.
Aang smiled again before pressing a quick kiss to her hair. It was the first time he had done something like that; usually Katara was the one to initiate all their physical contact, but where his words had failed him tonight his actions seemed to be enough. He saw her eyes close as a contented calm painted over her face.
There would be time for them to sort out everything, and for him to find the right words, but for now… she loved him. Katara loved him! And he’d finally told her the same, after months and months of failed attempts. Even if this was the extent of their relationship--sleeping next to each other and sharing the deepest secrets of their hearts--he would be extremely happy.
His chest felt warm and fluttery and his cheeks were beginning to hurt from smiling, and there may have been some happy tears welling in his eyes, but he didn’t care.
She had always been there to heal him, both physically and emotionally, from the various pains and griefs that he seemed unable to escape from. He hoped that he had been able to offer her some of that back, tonight. That they could continue to heal each other from whatever came their way. Forever.
