Finished watching Kipo last night and did some doodles bc I’m procrastinating

The whole ‘cure’ thing really threw me, that was darker than I expected it to go. Very effective way to have significant casualties without technically killing off a bunch of characters, you know? They’re still dead, but you don’t have to say the word or show a corpse. 

(The waistcoat-Wolf is a result of me trying to balance how bad I wanted her to wear a suit for prahm with how she’d definitely not want anything that could get in the way of free movement, plus her Clothes Source was Hugo.)

also, random thought, but all you need to do to realize definitively that the whole “mary sue” thing is bullshit is to watch Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.

because according to all those mary sue litmus tests and bingo boards and stuff, Kipo Oak is the definition of a mary sue. she has a colorful design, she plays guitar and piano, she can turn into a giant pink cat and literally everybody except one person loves her by the end. and despite, or i would even argue BECAUSE of all that, she is one of my favorite characters in anything. because she is a fun and likeable character in a fun and lighthearted show that is ABOUT making friends and solving problems by being nice.

the point is, don’t worry about making your oc too cool and powerful in case people call them a mary sue. nobody who matters cares about that. well-written mary sue type characters are awesome. if your story is well written and interesting, people will like it regardless of if your main character has crazy powers and rainbow hair or something. and even if your story isn’t well written, you should still write it. because writing it will help you get better at writing, and because no matter how bad it is, it still has value because it’s art you made.

AU where Emilia keeps her silly little habit of Using Children As Weapons Of War, and via various reasons I haven’t figured out yet (probably coercion, maybe via Wolf and Benson or her parents), she gets Kipo to become a child soldier.

Kipo is forced into jaguar form most of the time, and used for raids and attacks on whoever Emilia sees fit. Whenever she isn’t in jaguar form she’s exhausted and sore from the strain on herself.

Emilia at first tries to have some control. Tells Kipo it’s for the better, says whatever she thinks will make Kipo more pliant. Time goes on and she realizes Kipo doesn’t care. She doesn’t care about or believe the lies. She isn’t stupid, she knows what she’s doing and it hurts.

But what choice does she have?

"atsushi is literally the fucking guy ever. at the start of the story he thinks he has to earn the right to be alive because the idea that hes useless was so ingrained into him as a kid but in the more recent arcs hes healing and getting better in a really meaningful way its so good. on at least 2 occasions hes found another person with similar struggles having to do with their purpose for being alive and he helps them as muchas he can and its SO GOOD. The paralells...... for non story reasons hes a little cat :) thats reason enough i think he might keep losing his leg but he can TAKE this W!"
