how Tuesday, September 6, 2022 is going for this lot

Ayumu is at school today, and finally getting settled into sophomore year. Her classes include French, Chemistry, Trigonometry, Literature (all Scholars—above Honors at her school), P.E., and AP World History.

Chiara is also at school today, at the University of Edinburgh. Most of her classes are art- and literature-based, of course. The bandages on her head come from the impressive introduction of her head into one of the poles holding up the volleyball net during practice the previous day.

Chunying is at school today, what a shocker. She is in her third year of senior secondary school, or however it works in Taiwan. Nice.

Liz! Where you at today?

Holy shit, what a shock!

Elizabeth is in her final undergraduate year at Ohio State University. Lots of history classes and research papers keep her busy, not to mention, her promotion to Training Department Manager at her McDonald’s.

Eriko is at home, studying the games of the 1953 Zurich Interzonal Chess Tournament.

Erin is playing football with some friends from school.

Fernando is sitting at home, debating whether or not he should purchase some video poker training software.

Giacomo is sleeping in, since he has no classes to attend today.

Judyta is looking at Stack Exchange to figure out where she’s gone wrong with her code for her homework assignment.

Katarina is sitting bored at work, with no orders to process at the moment.

Kazimieras made some friends in Chelsea yesterday, and today he has a hangover. There was a Kanté jersey draped over his face when he woke up.

Madeleine and Vittoria are in Salzburg today, wearing black and red, to support AC Milan in their game against Red Bull Salzburg.

Madeleine’s just about had it with the annoying slot players at Palace Station today.

Peter is at football practice. His coach and friends were quick to let his brother Allan join them, which both are happy about.

Rafael is feeling lazy today and plans to spend most of the morning in bed.

Reina is taking her daily walk downtown.

Sara is taking a look at the stores in the Galerías Santa Anita, a mall in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, the southwestern suburb of Guadalajara.

Mission to the Unknown

An Earth rocket has made an emergency landing on the hostile jungle planet Kembel, when crewmember Cory reveals himself as a Space Security agent investigating the potential of a Dalek base on the planet. Indeed, the Daleks are readying a meeting with a group of alien representatives to form an alliance in order to conquer the universe. Hunted by Daleks and the deadly Varga plants they've brought from Skaro, can the astronauts get word back to Earth before either one catches them?

We're all familiar with Doctor-lite stories, especially in Nu-Who. The likes of Love and Monsters, Blink, Turn Left. Well, this is not only Doctor-lite, but Doctor-less. This is strictly Daleks and their allies and quarry. And it does a good job. The Daleks are planning something HUGE, they won't give anyone the faintest chance of even thinking about stopping them, and the story even has some body horror as someone infected by a Varga plant is forced to watch this thing growing on them, and consciously lose their mind to the urge to kill, before they finally become a Varga. Not bad for what's effectively a prologue, not bad at all.

As for the recreation I watched? Well, it's fantastic. Andrew Ireland and his crew at the University of Central Lancashire really did a superb job recreating the look and feel of a 60s episode. The fact that they even managed to get Nicholas Briggs to voice the Daleks, doing his best impressions of Peter Hawkins and David Graham is amazing too. If I have any criticisms, it's just that the picture quality is a bit too clean, you can tell when the Daleks are toys, and the actor for Malpha really hamming it up with his broad Northern accent is a bit jarring. Did he sound like that in the original? I have no idea. But beggars can't be choosers, and the fact that this lost story has been recreated at all, and so faithfully, is truly something to celebrate.

Now, unfortunately, we do run into a real problem with the next few stories. This is where the available selection begins to really run thin. Almost all the next few stories have been completely wiped. No Myth Makers, all but 3 episodes of The Daleks' Master Plan (the follow-up and pay-off to Mission to the Unknown), and no Massacre of St Barthomolew's Eve. It's a real shame too, we lose so much with these stories being gone. We lose Vicki's departure, Katarina and Sara joining, their deaths in The Dalek Master Plan, the return of the Monk, the sheer scale of Master Plan (twelve episodes! TWELVE!) and Dodo joining the crew. Seems a bit absurd to me that the likes of The Reign of Terror and Galaxy 4 survived the BBC's purging, but The Dalek Master Plan didn't. I COULD watch the 3 remaining episodes, but I'm loathe to jump right into such a huge story with no context or ending, so, regrettably, I'm going to have to skip it.

on october 31st, it started as a rumble: a low sound deep within the earth. the telephone poles and street signs began to sway. the ground shifted and opened up: a jagged split down the middle of main street, three feet wide and fifty feet long, revealing a black void beneath.

buildings cracked and crumbled. the huntsville bank lost a third of it's structure; the shelves in the library toppled and crashed into each other; pete's garage collapsed completely; the playground in the park slid to an angle.

the earthquake destroyed all the booths and stalls for the festival. a fire broke out in one of the haunted houses. a pipe burst, spraying the street with water. destruction and devastation reigned down upon main street.

it lasted a total of five minutes before the ground and dust settled and people were able to take stock of what just happened. Mayor Natasha rounded up the police and fire departments, sending them on a search and rescue to ensure everyone was recovered in some form or another and to put out the fires and check that every door with a protection rune remained intact.

shock and horror gained traction over the course of the next several hours, as reports came in. three individuals were killed and dozens were injured. Sunflower Parsons was declared missing, as her body was not recovered and no one could remember where they saw her last.

the list of deaths were posted the next morning: Minnie Garcia, Sammie Thompson, and Zoë Clark.
