august 11th : popsicle
Lucy twists her head from side to side and rolls her shoulders, trying to dispel the tension she holds. It has been a long week – and it is only Wednesday. After the discovery of three dead marines on Kailua beach two days ago, the team has been flat out trying to find out who is behind their murders.
Lucy scrunches her nose and wipes the sweat from her brow, then re-reads the witness statements on the screen in front of her. The air conditioning is working hard to keep her cool in the middle of the latest heatwave that has hit O’ahu. Lucy is used to hot Texan summers and is coping better than most – and certainly better than Kate.
Speaking of, Lucy hears the front door swing open and a loud sigh as Kate appears in the kitchen.
“That’s it, I’m transferring back to D.C.”
Lucy smiles. It is not the first time she has heard this from Kate.
“They say it’s going to cool down after the weekend.”
Kate grunts in reply as she opens the refrigerator and sticks her head inside, moaning with delight as the cold air cools her down. She grabs a can of soda and then pulls out a popsicle from the freezer drawer.
“Want one?”
Lucy shakes her head, no, so Kate keeps it for herself. Pushing the drawer closed, she kicks off her shoes and pads across the apartment, only pausing to press a kiss against Lucy’s forehead.
“Hey you,” she says softly.
“Hey.”
Lucy watches as Kate goes to the couch, places the soda and popsicle on the table, and pauses to strip herself of her shirt and trousers. Lucy feels her breath hitch in her throat at the sight of Kate in her underwear. The familiar butterflies flutter in her stomach and she can’t keep her eyes off her girlfriend as she stretches her long legs along the cushions and leans her head back against the armrest. She has been enchanted by Kate’s beauty since the day she met her and that feeling has never gone away – and she hopes it never will.
Kate reaches for the popsicle and removes the wrapper, sighing happily as she puts the frozen lolly in her mouth, her tongue gliding over the ice.
Oblivious to the effect she is having, Lucy’s teeth sink so deeply into her bottom lip that she nearly draws blood. Giving up on work, she slams her laptop shut and walks over to the couch, stealing the last of the popsicle from Kate’s hand.
“Hey!” Kate grumbles, sitting upright to try and take it back.
Lucy sees her opportunity and climbs into Kate’s lap, straddling her hips.
“Lucy, it’s too hot,” Kate whines.
Lucy puts the popsicle in her mouth and covers her lips with the sticky syrup, then kisses Kate.
“Then let me cool you down.”
She repeats her action, but this time she presses her lips to Kate’s neck, cooling her pulse point.
“Better?”
Kate hums happily, her earlier objections gone. “Don’t stop.”

(I know it's the 15th... life was busy last week and I was away for the weekend, so there was a delay in writing this up. 😊)
