The Kate Smith Hour was a popular radio program that, like many in the 1930s, broadcast live, with a live audience. These people are waiting on line outside the CBS Theater, hoping to get in, September 29, 1938.

Hey, all. Sorry I've been quiet lately, I have been dog-sitting the last couple days and as a result have spent the time ripping Christmas records to MP3 with a portable setup.
If you are not interested in the details, scroll on.
Vinyl of the moment is Kate Smith's album "O Come All Ye Faithful", 1959 (but this is a 1970s Pickwick stereo rerelease), in pretty good condition. Usually I keep my turntable's preamp off because it distorts the hell out of things but having the recording level up to 90 wasn't doing the sound justice so I turned it on. That allowed me to turn the recording level down to 3(!).
Yeah, the switch is under the record mat. I am using Audacity as my audio editor and it seems that when the album was remastered for stereo they separated the instruments and backing singers from her voice. Note the different waveforms for each channel.
There are inevitably plenty of pops though it's not that dusty an album so I use the Click Removal feature; problem is the settings because where I normally keep them was removing half of the male vocals. I did a little looking up online for what would be optimal and changed them to 150 threshold and 40 spike. This managed to cut out the pops without compromising the voices.
The results were something close to CD quality. If I had been running the turntable through my stereo to further tweak the sound it would have been wider due to Bass Boost, but I didn't bring it with me because it would have been a hassle to unplug from the speakers. 😉 I put fades at the beginning and ends of each track, and saved each track as 256kbps.
Next album to rip:

Rocky's Cover-Up
On April 28, 1933, just two days before the RCA Building was to open to new tenants, artist Diego Rivera added a portrait of Vladimir Lenin to the mural he was painting in the building’s lobby.
Feb. 24, 1934 cover by Garrett Price.
When Nelson Rockefeller asked Rivera to replace Lenin with a portrait of an “everyman,” Rivera refused, stating that he would prefer to see the whole mural destroyed…
