coryyyy!! 2, 16, 35, 57, 93, 110, 117 from the book ask game <333
hi maya thank you for stopping by /ᐠ - ˕ -マ all but one of these recs are written in english; the last one, compañeras, is written in a mix of spanish & 'spanglish'.
2. a book with a blue cover
i was so ready to say my husband by maud ventura for this but it turns out that??? the cover! is not blue. only the title is. so. with that said i'll go with all's well by mona awad.
i wasn't too sure about reading this at first but i had read and loved bunny by this author, so i figured i'd give it a chance despite my hesitation regarding the topic. glad i did, i'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. it could have been higher, but the ending was... well i don't want to spoil it if anyone is reading it/wants to read it, but it was definitely a very awad-esque ending in that it was neutral and honestly? a bit unsatisfying.
we follow a vengeful actor turned theatre director with debilitating chronic pain who slowly over time loses her sense of empathy as she gets lost in her anger. very, very unhinged. i saw dominique defoe say that it was disturbing to dive into a feminine rage book that wasn't set in a fantasy world where a lack of morality could be smoothed over by the greater good; all's well is a modern contemporary with real world problems. lots of references to two shakespeare plays (which you could probably tell by the title anyway lol).
my usual advice to ppl when they go to read a mona awad book is to have something fun and light to read after because rarely will you be happy with the 'resolution' in her writing.
16. a book you'd recommend to your younger self.
listen. little me was a pretentious fuck lol. i was walking around reading plato's the republic in middle school. i read electra by sophocles for the first time when i was like? 13 i think. both great reads but i really could have benefited from some less heavy material back then. something comforting and silly. with that said, and taking into thought what was already published by that time, i would say any of the lizzie mcguire books.
35. a book featuring the found family trope.
i actually don't read much found family outside of fanfiction but ig six of crows by leigh bardugo. i haven't touched that book since it was published but i remember really enjoying the dynamics between the characters, particularly kaz and wylan. i was also shocked by the huge improvement in the quality of writing compared to her shadow and bone series which i ended up never finishing.
57. a book you want to hit your head with
(assuming this means in a frustrated way) i'll go with the secret history by donna tart. it took me over a week and a half to finish that damn book. for reference normally i can finish a book of that length in two-three days. it was so slow. in over 100 pages the only thing that happened was the main character was able to get into a class he wanted and one of the female characters cut her?? finger?? foot?? smth. it wasn't a life threatening injury either.
the pacing was unbearable but the atmosphere made up for it. i spent some of my formative years where the book is set in the beginning so i did enjoy that aspect, and once i got over half way through it really picked up in intensity but yeah. it's a modern classic for a reason but i think in the future if i want to read a classic, i'll stick with dostoevsky.
93. a book featuring an unreliable narrator.
(the secret history also fits this but since i used that for 57) i'll say we have always lived in the castle by shirley jackson. if you haven't read a book by jackson before,,, do so. immediately. she does NOT disappoint.
this book is about two sisters taking refuge in their family manor together after almost their entire family is killed via poison. the townspeople, naturally, point the finger at the sisters and their surviving uncle but are unsure which one of the three committed the crime.
the narrator, 18 year old sister mary katherine, is very childish (to the point that ppl forget she and her sister aren't children). very much a story of sisterhood and trauma and a house is haunted by the living.
110. your favourite psychological thriller.
i can't think of anything off the top of my head so i'll just suggest the one i'm going to read at the start of the new year: a flicker in the dark by stacy willingham. I've heard excellent things about this book. the main character's father was convicted of her murder two decades ago, and while he's behind bars, someone with the same motive---or perhaps the actual killer all along---starts kidnapping young girls again.
117. your favourite anthology.
this really depends on the genre for me but the first to come to mind is one i recently read: compañeras, which is a collection of oral histories, short stories, poetry and essays by and about lesbian latinas.
my own experience with being a bisexual latina woman made this an especially meaningful read to me. in our culture, you don't really discuss your sexuality with your family if you aren't straight. there's a lot of shame in it. i had it a bit easier, given i didn't grow up around many other latines; so the cultural shame wasn't as prevalent for me outside of family. but it was still there.
being a hispanic/latino queer still very commonly results in being disowned once you come out or are outed. i remember when i spoke to my abuela about it (after having already come out) she nearly drove us into a tree.
this collection digs deep into the shame and familial and cultural expectations put on latina women, and it dives into how confusing and lonely it can be to learn about your identity in a household where you can't speak about your experience with the people meant to guide you (elders).
this anthology was also originally published in the late 80s by the latina lesbian history project! and even all this time later, we still face many of the same issues with oppression and family disownment and expectations that the women were talking about in this collection.
a lot of this was written in english, but some were in spanish & spanglish so if you don't speak spanish and want to read this you will have to look for translations for some of the content.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Show opens with the end of the "Tails I Live, Heads You Die" episode from Season Two. We see the collapse of the building with the Satanic cult, and the Coin of Ziocles left buried. Then cut to present day. A construction crew is excavating the site and workers come upon the skeleton of Sylvan Winters and the coin. To avoid work delays, they dump the remains and tell no one. The coin falls on to the ground.
At night, two cops in a car are waiting on another man. They plan to rob him, being tired of working hard for nothing. They see a car pull up and hurry over to spy on the man. This man pulls a briefcase out of hiding, full of drugs. The others accost him and want to know where the money is. He says it is hidden. The two men, Goreman and Briggs, argue and the other, Koslow gets away, shooting Briggs. Goreman then shoots Koslow, who says Goreman can't kill him since he's a cop. Goreman sees the coin on the ground and tells the other man to call it, let the coin decide. But it is the Coin of Ziocles, so a beam shoots out into Koslow's head, killing him. Goreman is surprised by this and picks up the coin.
Cut to credits.
We open on Johnny, sadly looking at a picture of him and his dad. Jack comes down, him and Micki are off to evaluate some antiques Micki asks if something is wrong and Johnny mentions he used to fish with his dad this time of year. Micki and Jack try to comfort him and offer support.
At the police station, his superior is going over Goreman's report of the shoot out that led to his partner Brigg's death and Koslow's weird burn. The chief tells him to take a few days off, but Goreman says no. He asks if any cases previously had marks like the one on Koslow's head, and the chief mentions the cult from a couple of years ago.
Jack and Micki arrive back as Johnny is watching the news report about the shooting. When the anchorwoman mentions the ram's head mark on the drug dealer's head, Micki drops the statue she brought home. Her and Jack are shocked, Jack tries to say it might not be the coin, but Micki knows it is and runs upstairs. A confused Johnny asks what's up and Jack fills him on the coin of Ziocles and what it does. And that it killed Micki. He also tells how they got Micki back and thought the coin was buried for good.
In the police file room, Goreman looks for a file for "Hewitt" and sees a photo with the ram's head.
Jack goes to check on Micki, who is sitting on her bed. She says she's scared. Jack says he is, too. She's afraid the coin will kill her again, but Jack says they have to go after it. Micki says no, she's paranoid the coin is out for her personally.
Goreman is at home, reading the file and all about the Coin of Ziocles. He learns the coin can kill and raise the dead. He goes to the morgue. He unzips a back, seeing a horribly disfigured body. Then he finds Briggs' body and places the coin on his forehead. Briggs awakens and Goreman welcomes him back.
Jack, Micki and Johnny arrive at the site where the building the cult had been, now the construction site. Jack goes to look around. Micki has a flashback of when the Coin was used to kill her. She freaks out and Johnny asks what it was like to be dead. She says she was cold and it was empty and Satan was waiting for her. She can't stay, telling Johnny she'll meet them back at the store before running off.
Goreman has Briggs at his apartment, telling him they can use the powers of the coin to bring Koslow back and find the money. Briggs is a bit off, sort of super pale and dazed. Goreman says they will kill Rita, the hooker who tipped them off, then use the coin to resurrect Koslow. Briggs is still acting weird.
Jack tells Johnny the cops won't let him investigate the area where the shooting happened. He then tells Johnny they should keep Micki out of this as much as possible. Jack wants to go to the police station to find out more, but since Johnny's dad had friends there, he offers to go.
At the station, Johnny talks to the Sarge, who knows him. Johnny asks about the shooting, and Goreman overhears. Johnny uses the computer when the Sarge leaves to find Goreman's address.
Back at the store, Jack tells Johnny to be quiet, Micki is napping. Johnny tells Jack what he found out and that Briggs' body has disappeared. Micki comes down, overhearing this. Johnny says maybe it is okay, maybe Goreman just wanted his partner back. Micki is aghast, and Jack tries to tell Johnny it doesn't work that way. Micki runs back upstairs and Jack goes after her.
Goreman and Briggs put on their uniforms and head out to find and kill Rita. Johnny arrives outside the apartment, and sees the men get into their car. He recognizes the now-alive Briggs from the paper. He follows them.
That night, Goreman and Briggs pull alongside Rita and tell her to get into the car. She is reluctant, so Briggs grabs her and tosses her in the back. Johnny watches and again follows as they drive off.
The cops take Rita to an out of the way spot and she's afraid they are going to assault her. Instead, Goreman tosses the coin in the air and when it lands, the beam shoots out, killing the woman. Johnny watches, shocked. Briggs takes Rita's body to dump. Johnny runs up and tackles Goreman. The coin falls and Johnny grabs it. Goreman shoots at Johnny, but he gets away.
Back in her room, Micki is writing to Ryan. She misses him and is scared. Jack comes to check on her. She says maybe the letter will help Ryan understand when she's dead. Micki is worried it won't be long before they are both dead at the hands of a cursed antique. Jack tries to comfort her. Johnny comes up but doesn't want to interrupt, so he goes back downstairs. He looks at the photo of him and his dad.
Later, at the cemetery, Johnny looks at the coin in his hand then begins to dig up the grave of his father. He eventually does, opens the coffin and places the coin on the dead man's forehead. Vince Ventura awakens, confused as to what is going on. Johnny tells him they need to get out of there.
In their car, Briggs and Goreman are going to find Johnny. Goreman heard Johnny at the police station and he thinks Johnny would take the coin to the cemetery to revive his father.
Johnny has taken his father to the place they used to go camp and fish at. Vince is acting a bit odd, which Johnny notices, but shrugs off, since he's just happy to have him back. Johnny goes to make a call at the lodge.
In the cemetery, Goreman and Briggs find the dug up grave and open coffin and head to find Johnny.
Micki comes downstairs, and Jack says Johnny's machine has a message that he went fishing. The phone rings. Johnny tells Jack he's on a lead for the coin. Jack tries to tell Johnny it is too dangerous, but Johnny hangs up. Micki is now worried they'll lose Johnny like they lost Ryan. Jack is frustrated. Micki tells him he doesn't know what it was like to be dead. Jack tells her to get on with her life, she's not dead now. Micki is just afraid, but Jack says they have to stop them.
Goreman and Briggs break into Johnny's apartment, then look for clues to where they went. They play the answering machine and see the fishing photo with the lake name and know where to go.
At their campsite, Johnny listens to his dad talk. Vince is acting very off, talking to Johnny about life and the universe. Johnny says he missed his dad, but Vince asks where Johnny's mother is. Just then, Goreman and Briggs arrive and threaten a confused Vince. Johnny pulls the coin and threatens to use it. He gets his dad in the car before the cops start shooting. Johnny dives into the car but drops the coin. He speeds off. Briggs and Goreman argue and Briggs shoots and kills his partner and gets the coin.
Jack and Micki arrive at Johnny's apartment and are worried about the mess. But then Johnny arrives, with Vince, which shocks Jack and Micki. Vince is confused and Micki realizes what Johnny did. Johnny tries to explain but Jack is angry, yelling at Johnny, who tells them to leave. Jack wants the coin, but Johnny says Goreman has it again. Jack and Micki leave, but not before Jack tells Johnny to stay out of everything they do from now on.
Jack and Micki go to the cemetery. They find a dug up grave and a parked car. They look around, but Briggs comes up behind Jack, hitting him with a shovel and sending him in to the open grave. Briggs then pulls the coin as a Micki stands horrified, remembering her death once again. Briggs gets ready to toss the coin, but Johnny speeds up and hits him with his car. Johnny tells his father to run as he goes to Micki. But Briggs is back on his feet. They run, the cop gets in his car and chases them through the cemetery. After a close call, they run again, but Briggs catches up. Micki falls into a grave. Johnny tries to lead the cop away, but Briggs keeps shooting at him. Then he goes to the open grave and sees Micki, trapped. He is again about to toss the coin when Johnny hits him, knocking him into the grave with Micki.
Johnny tries to get Micki out, but she sees the Coin and goes for it, struggling with Briggs. She grabs the shovel and attacks the cop with it in a frenzy. In tears, she picks up the coins and Johnny helps her out. Jack stumbles up and Micki rushes to him. She's says it's all over, but Jack sees Vince and says it isn't. Vince is confused, wandering about. Johnny tries to explain but his father doesn't understand. Johnny tells Jack he can't kill him, but Jack says he has to. Vince says they will talk again someday. Johnny reluctantly tosses the coin, which kills Vince. Johnny goes to him, sobbing, as Micki and Jack watch.
Another day, Jack asks Micki how she is doing. She says okay, but she's not sure about Johnny. Jack tells him to remember his father how he used to be. Johnny says he shouldn't be there, but Micki says he belongs with them. They will always be there for each other. The three embrace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My thoughts:
Quite the episode. Very glad they did a sequel episode to the Coin of Ziocles. It was such an important antique that actually killed one of them, so never revisiting it would have been a missed opportunity.
I liked how justifiably freaked out Micki was. Of course she would be paranoid of this item, it killed her. Also like how Jack is very gentle with her at first, but as Johnny gets wrapped up in his own nonsense, Jack begins to lose it. All makes sense.
And Johnny. Not the first time we've had him wondering "why not?" with a cursed item. He doesn't yet have all of the experience with the horrors the items bring, so it is interesting to see this idea tackled. He is right, Jack and Ryan used the Coin to revive Micki, so why not his Dad? He might be wrong, but we can definitely understand his motivations.
The cops were really horrible guys. With the way Briggs and Vince act when they are revived, I get the idea the dead come back as more intense versions of their alive personas. Briggs was a bad cop, revived his downright evil. And Vince was a good dad, and now he is a philosophical zen dude. So, when the coin was used on Micki last year, did she come back a little more … Micki? Braver, stronger? Curious, anyway.
Glad Jack came around to sympathize with Johnny at the end. He was really angry there for awhile!
Wonder what the cemetery grounds keeper though the next day?

The ringer 2005
Tumblr media
The Special Olympics committee eventually agreed to endorse the film, the film makers having given them final say on the script. The film took seven years to get made due to its controversial subject. Funk portrayed one of the debt collectors, while Ventura lent his voice as a motivational speaker on tape. Professional wrestlers Terry Funk and Jesse Ventura's cameo appearances came about due to their friendship with director Barry Blaustein, who met the pair whilst filming wrestling documentary Beyond the Mat in the late 1990s. Lynn already forgives him because Stavi told her why Steve pretended to be developmentally disabled. Glen and the others trick Lynn into coming to the theater, so Steve starts to apologize. Six months later, Steve has quit his job and is working in theater, helping produce a play with the friends he made during the Special Olympics, as well as Stavi, who got his fingers reattached. Uncle Gary still ends up winning his bet, since the condition was that Jimmy would lose. He then gives his medal to Thomas, who had come in fourth. During the medal ceremony Steve admits that he isn't developmentally disabled, reveals his actual name, and that he doesn't deserve his medal. As Steve decides to pack up and leave for his ruse being exposed, they tell Steve to stay, since they want to help Steve save Stavi's fingers and they hate the egotistical, arrogant champion Jimmy and want to see him lose.Īt the final competition, Steve doesn't actually win his friend Glen does, with Steve coming in third behind Jimmy. During this time, six of the other contestants bust Steve after seeing through his ruse, so he tells them about what happened with Stavi. Despite initially being disgusted at pretending to be mentally challenged, Steve goes along with it for Stavi.ĭuring the competition, Steve falls in love with Lynn ( Katherine Heigl), a volunteer for the Special Olympics. Gary, assuming that Steve will easily defeat the legitimate contenders, bets $100,000 that reigning champion Jimmy Washington won't win the gold medal. Steve, who competed in track and field in high school as well as being in the drama club, reluctantly enters the Special Olympics in the guise of a high functioning young man with a developmental disability named Jeffy Dahmor. His uncle Gary ( Brian Cox), owes $40,000 in gambling debts and suggests that they fix the Special Olympics in San Marcos, Texas in order to solve both of their financial problems. Steve must raise $28,000 within two weeks to pay for the surgery to re-attach his friend's fingers. Stavi gets three fingers cut off in a lawn-mower accident, and reveals that he doesn't have health insurance. Steve fires Stavi ( Luis Ávalos), but hires him to work around his apartment. His first duty is to fire his friend Stavi, who is the janitor. Steve Barker ( Johnny Knoxville) hates his job but after over two years of working, receives a promotion.

'When you know the notes to sing...’:  Julie Andrews’ Eleven Favourite Nursery Rhymes (1952)
In 2003, the US-based global publishing giant, HarperCollins, announced with great fanfare that it was launching a new children’s book imprint, The Julie Andrews Collection. It was the publisher’s first ever celebrity imprint and one where the celebrity was not (just) an author but the commissioning editor in charge of selecting works by other writers and endorsing them with a personal imprimatur (Lodge 2003). Literally, as all titles in The Julie Andrews Collection were to feature a prominent Mary Poppins-like umbrella logo which, as Harper Collins director, Katherine Tegen explained, ‘is a way to give a seal of approval to books that Andrews deems worthy’ (Critchell, 2).
The launch of The Julie Andrews Collection marked a symbolic high-point in the market trend of celebrity-authored kiddie-lit in the early-2000s. ‘Star authors flood the market with children’s books’ trumpeted the headline of one 2003 news story, noting how ‘the celebrity pen seems to be in overdrive these days’ with the publication of children’s books from a host of famous names as disparate as Jerry Seinfeld, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jesse Ventura, Spike Lee, and Madonna (Finholm 6E).
Andrews was no Julie-come-lately to the celebrity child-lit phenomenon. Penning her first children’s novel, Mandy, in 1971, and her second, The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, in 1974, she was something of a market pioneer. As Bird, Danielson, and Sieruta (2014) note, ‘Julie Andrews….mark[ed] the beginning of the modern era of the celebrity children’s book’ and ‘ushered in the very idea of a successful celebrity picture-book author’ (182-83).
Leaving aside the vexed question of literary merit, it’s not difficult to gauge why publishing houses have been so keen to enlist celebrity authors of children’s books. In a fiercely competitive market, a recognisable celebrity name ensures media attention and, with it, boosted sales. ‘Celebrity sells,’ notes Jeff Gunn (1999) in an early assessment of the trend, and ‘any book by a celebrity, even a children’s book, can move lots of copies in star-struck America’ (YT-3).
It’s a commercial strategy not unlike that used in celebrity advertising where entertainment stars and other popular figures are used to market everything from movies and television shows to perfumes, clothing, and carbonated beverages. Marketers claim that celebrity endorsement is most effective when there is what is called ‘brand alliance’ or a representational synergy between the celebrity’s image and that of the advertised product (Gunter 2014).
Julie Andrews’ close association with some of the most popular family films of all time and her broad trans-generational appeal offer a pretty optimal ‘brand alliance’ for a children’s publishing company. As Katherine Tegen of HarperCollins explained when announcing The Julie Andrews Collection: ‘Very few people know how to entertain children like Julie Andrews does...The public associates good taste, quality and charm with Julie’ (Critchell, S2-2).
Decades before she launched this eponymous book imprint, Julie Andrews was already leveraging her celebrity in the service of ‘brand alliances’ with publishers. In February 1952, when Julie was a juvenile star in Britain, she lent her name and face to a high profile cross-marketing campaign with the popular British magazine, Woman’s Companion. As part of its February 2 issue, the magazine offered a special 12-page insert booklet titled Julie Andrews’ Eleven Favourite Nursery Rhymes as a promotional give-away. Sporting a beatific cameo of a radiantly smiling young Andrews framed by three-tone illustrated figures from classical English nursery rhymes, the booklet traded centrally on Julie’s popular image of the time as ‘Britain’s youngest singing star’ and her association with family-friendly entertainments on stage and radio. The promo featured prominently on the front cover of the magazine and was widely advertised in newspapers and other outlets.
When Julie did the Woman’s Companion promotional tie-in, she was 16 years old and fast moving beyond the sweet-little-girl-with-the powerful-voice image crafted during her early years. The fact she was being mobilised to peddle children’s nursery rhymes has been interpreted as a sign that ‘the public still tended to think of her as a child’ and she was having ‘a difficult time making the transition to more grown-up roles’ (Arntz and Wilson, 22). The point is well taken and there is certainly evidence to support such a reading, not the least being the girlish styling of her star portrait.
It shouldn’t be overlooked, however, that Julie Andrews’ Eleven Favourite Nursery Rhymes was included not in a children’s magazine but Woman’s Companion. Dubbed ‘the wives’ own weekly paper’, Woman’s Companion was a hugely popular mid-century British magazine geared to adult women and their ‘widening sphere of interests as mothers. wives and workers’ (Hackney 294). In this context, Woman’s Companion frequently included promotional booklets designed to value-add to women’s domestic labour and personal lives with subjects such as knitting, cooking, hygiene, beauty, and parenting.
In this case, Julie Andrews’ Eleven Favourite Nursery Rhymes was being directed to women as a resource for use in domestic childcare. These were eleven songs, complete with music and lyrics, that could be played on the piano -- in an era when such things were still commonplace in the middle class home -- for the entertainment and education of the household’s youngsters. That the booklet came with the personal imprimatur of ‘lovely’ Julie Andrews --who certainly knew a thing or two about music and childhood -- gave the project an added aura of celebrity-endorsed expertise. It is a dynamic explicated by Julie herself in the blurb on the front cover:
‘I do hope you will like the Nursery Rhymes I have chosen for you-- I loved them when I was small, and now I often sing them for Chris, my youngest brother. I hope you will have lots of fun sharing them with your family. Love from Julie Andrews’
No longer ‘small’, Julie now sings these songs of domesticated childhood in her symbolic guardian role of ‘big sister’ and extends the music to other households in the pursuit of family love and bonding. It’s an assumption of celebrity-mediated musical tutelage that foreshadows -- with almost uncanny prescience -- the singing nanny trope that would, decades later, become such a foundational element of the Julie Andrews screen persona and, in turn, enable her auxiliary career as a beloved and trusted celebrity children’s author.

To be born a Kennedy on Catalina Island was the greatest privilege or so little James Edward Kennedy has been told ever since he could listen, over and over again. Surely it had its perks, but the constant pressure to become and be the perfect son Edward and Katherine always wanted, was always there, even when he was just a little boy. The weight lifted slightly when his little brother Marcus was born four years after him and once more when the Kennedys had their last child, a daughter they’d call Elizabeth. Now the siblings all received the same amount of attention, which was the best thing to happen to a seven-year-old boy, who finally felt like the child he actually was. At least when there was time to play and be a kid in the midst of piano lessons, learning how to eat food the proper way and the after school private tutoring.
When it was time for school, the Kennedys weren’t surprised that James easily became the smartest kid in his class. With the amount of money spent on only the best tutors and speech therapists, it was the least he could’ve achieved. Not only did he have the brain, but James also showed an equal interest in being active and participate in school sports. Given his nature, he tried to do and learn everything at once, wanted to be good at everything at the same time and it even worked… for a while. Soccer on Mondays, swimming on Tuesdays and football on Thursdays and Fridays. His whole schedule was packed with the things he enjoyed to do and as long as he was happy, his parents had nothing to worry about. Honestly, they didn’t have to worry about their oldest much at all, at least not until he began attending high school.
Ironically, James decided his education was worth more than being active in that many different sports, as soon as he started high school. Well, his parents decided it was time he picked out one and focus more of his time on his studies. Almost naturally but also reluctantly, he picked football, knowing he would be able to make the most out of it. With this, his structured daily routine changed and with a lot more time on his hands, James had a lot more free time to explore life as a high schooler; and it was nothing like the kids of his parents’ friends always described it to be. He wasn’t bullied by other students, he was actually quite popular as soon as he started playing football for the school’s team. Popularity came and so came the girls, up until James met the one who’d change his no-girlfriend rule. While it was known that none of her relationships lasted very long and he was foolish to believe she would stick around for longer with him, he still tried. But trying doesn’t mean it actually worked out. To be honest, dating her was exhausting and for someone like him, way too much drama. Their liaison lasted for six months before it came to an end and he swore, he’d focus on other, more important things.
His mother was devastated by the news, knowing his now ex-girlfriend came from a ‘good’ family just like theirs. When James eventually started dating again, Katherine made it clear that it wouldn’t work out for them. A Kennedy dating anybody who wasn’t hand-picked by her was considered a tragedy amongst the family, who all instantly took Katherine’s side. Whenever he tried going out with someone he liked, his mom found a way for their relationship to end and after a while, James just stopped dating altogether. It wasn’t like he needed to be in relationships to get girls… his popularity helped heaps, but he wasn’t happy with the arrangement. Katherine Kennedy wasn’t someone you’d like to mess with. She had influence where other people didn’t even realize you could have any sort of say over. So when his ex-girlfriend, the one he’d been glad to be separated from, stood on his doorstep, James knew to never question his mothers pull again. Too exhausted to continue trying to defy his mother, he gave in and began dating her again.
Time went by and although he wished for it to be different, James realized he’d probably never fall head over heels in love with the beauty that was his girlfriend. Graduating from high school a year sooner than his girlfriend it was, thankfully, time to say goodbye. The family business had always been his grandfather’s greatest accomplishment and something he was and could be, terribly proud of; it was the natural thing to follow his dad’s footsteps and go to Yale. He began filling his schedule with school activities to his best abilities, picking up tutoring for other students and joining the football team there as well. Anything to avoid coming home. It didn’t seem like his girlfriend at home was missing him terribly either. Still, to fulfil his mother’s wishes, James proposed right after her graduation, going against everything he believed and ignoring how wrong it actually was. Even with the distance, Katherine wouldn’t let the relationship fail a second time. He doesn’t know how he did it, but after graduation from Yale in his mid-twenties, they got married.
Soon after and without a honeymoon, the couple left for Barcelona, where some relatives were managing the Kennedy Resort. James found his way around quickly and did his job well. Surely his father pushed him to do better from time to time, but he knew what it meant to be disciplined. To be honest, James liked spending his time in the office or anywhere within the resort more than at home. When his grandfather passed, James barely had the time to grieve the loss: his new responsibilities basically started right away. He never stayed in one place for longer than two weeks at most and if he did, something had gone terribly wrong. The fact that James didn’t have time for his wife anymore, didn’t bother him at all. Their conversations became even less and with his training completely done for, James was now fully involved and invested in the business. He has no idea when, but somewhere along the line, the calls, texts and visits eventually stopped altogether, and yet, the news of her infidelity reached him quick.
Building an empire: that’s what James was supposed to do. A cheating wife, who frankly wasn’t after more than his money, didn’t fit into the plan anymore. His grandfather had always supported the idea of putting the business first and there wouldn’t be a Kennedy legacy without Harold Kennedy’s wise decisions. The decision to divorce his wife was one James didn’t even have to think about, while every other angle and detail needed to be thought through to a T. James quickly realized that his work was now his entire life.
It took James years to feel settled enough to come back home to Catalina. Jetsetting had long lost its appeal and now he longed for nothing more than to have one place he could call home. With his ex-wife now out of the picture, the move back home was an easy decision. Finding someone who’d do the dirty work from now on was equally easy: being the CEO of the Kennedy Enterprise gave him more opportunities to finally be who he wanted to be. Nonetheless, there was always more work. Here on Catalina Island, there was the Casino, the first-ever opened Kennedy Resort and a couple of other business and real estate pieces James had to manage. At the same time, coming home feels like a vacation from his usual busy life.

location: the brunch club setting: late morning
Tumblr media
nothing beats a stressful early morning than some good food, or so she thinks. when katherine arrives at the establishment, she finds the place almost filled to the brim, with barely any unoccupied tables left. well, she supposes she could go to another restaurant for brunch, but she’s really not in the mood for the cuisine the other places in ventura offers. plus, she rather not go too far from her workplace. and so she decides to stand at the side and queue for a table, a wistful look smearing her face.

Among the Stars-
The Lowe/Mezera/Kumar Family and 10 things about each of them. @radioactivepeasant and made with @sangled‘s picrew.
Tumblr media
Chase Lowe- Death Sendura
1. He was the first free Lowe. His mother had bought her freedom before mysteriously getting pregnant.
2. He had an apprentice back during his time as a Venti. He doesn’t know where Callisto Epil is- just that she ran off with the bounty hunter he hired after she left the Ventura to keep an eye on her.
3. He met Fiona during his first assignment.
4. He ended up naming the conspiracy after his mother Katherine.
5. There is a group of doctors who are willing to fight whoever made his suit- it was made to keep him alive but in agonizing pain. Kate figured it out first and immediately marched off to design him a new suit.
6. He’s not sure what the twins would be like if he raised them and the idea is honestly terrifying.
7. He thought Fiona was pregnant with a boy. If she was still alive, he knows she would be telling him “I told you so” for years.
8. He’s one of the tallest characters.
9. He  calls himself heartless but definitely isn’t
10. His life was made of near-death experiences.
Tumblr media
Fiona Mezera, senator of the planet of Avalon and Chase’s secret wife.
1. She thought she and Chase were going to have a girl.
2. She had a huge sweet tooth.
3. Lara was the one to figure out that Pasque gave her lifeforce to the dying Chase.
4. Weaving was a favorite hobby of hers.
5. She probably had a knife in both boots.
6. Her tomb is a sacred space on Avalon.
7. She was close to her parents as well as her younger sister Ariadne. (At the present moment, their father is dead and Ariadne is tending to their elderly mother.)
8. She probably would’ve been a leader in the Resistance.
9. Swimming was her favorite sport.
10. Her love languages were gifts and physical affection.
Tumblr media
Clara Kumar, adopted princess and ambassador/senator of Vixia Prime.
1. On the basis of ‘she’s taller and the white hair makes Kate look younger’, most people think Clara’s the older twin.
2. Her favorite color is green.
3. She gets upset whenever people point out how much she looks/acts like Chase Lowe. King Kumar was her father, thank you very much!
4. She’s lesbian.
5. It’s a kind of personal mission to help Kate pick out a favorite color/food.
6. She and Sendura once took a road trip when she was younger to solve the mystery of a murder.
7. She and Damien hate each other. She thinks he’s cold and heartless and he thinks she’s spoiled and bossy. This doesn’t change when the conspiracy starts or when he starts courting Kate.
8. Traditionally, on her homeworld, people wear their partner’s color. Even with Clara starting to wear more blue, it took Kate to explain it to Lara.
9. She has what you can call a British accent.
10. She’s the character who keeps pulling out weapons, even from places that don’t make sense.
Tumblr media
1. Despite what Clara might say, Kate isn’t blind to her father’s faults.
2. Remember Elizabeth and Will’s wedding in Pirates of the Caribbean? That was what Kate and Damien’s wedding was like. (In their defense, the two had talked about getting married and both thought they were going to die in the situation.)
3. She found a flight simulator when she was young and fixed it, and used it to practice flying before she bought a ship used for atmospheric flight.
4. She and Sela Bellini do have a romantic history.
5. She’s friend shaped!
6. She’s biromantic
7. She doesn’t know what her favorite color/food is because she grew up in a world composed of snow and lava- which means not a lot of options for either.
8. All the formal wear she owns is either her mother’s stuff her aunt and granny sent to her or the bare parts of the Empire’s uniform.
9. Because of growing up on Snow World- Lara’s words- Kate can’t sleep unless she’s under a lot of layers.
10. Because of, again, reasons stated above, whenever she gets sent to new worlds for Resistance or conspiracy business with other people she ends up clinging to the person she’s most familiar with because it’s all so new and there’s people and things she hasn’t seen before!
