Quote
I wonder if this is how everyone is destined to live: hopping from familiar space to familiar space until all the familiar spaces turn into one big blurry memory of nothing in particular.

Candidly Cline by Kathryn Ormsbee
Tumblr media
Today's sapphic book of the day is Candidly Cline by Kathryn Ormsbee!
Summary: "A must-read for fans of Julie Murphy and Ashley Herring Blake, this queer coming-of-age story from critically acclaimed author Kathryn Ormsbee sings with heart, warmth, and hope.
Born in Paris, Kentucky, and raised on her gram’s favorite country music, Cline Alden is a girl with big dreams and a heart full of song. When she finds out about a young musicians’ workshop a few towns over, Cline sweet-talks, saves, and maybe fibs her way into her first step toward musical stardom.
But her big dreams never prepared her for the butterflies she feels surrounded by so many other talented kids—especially Sylvie, who gives Cline the type of butterflies she’s only ever heard about in love songs.
As she learns to make music of her own, Cline begins to realize how much of herself she’s been holding back. But now, there’s a new song taking shape in her heart—if only she can find her voice and sing it."

Severely underrated book
It’s not an award winner in many categories
But there is something so nice about it, it touches on many things and does something different but comforting
More to come on The Lucky Few by Kathryn Ormsbee

Forgotten YA Gems is now on Discord! Join us for discussions!
We’re a Goodreads/Discord group that reads YA, NA, or MG books that are at least five years old. While not necessarily “forgotten” (as many of them have lovely fanbases here on Tumblr), we focus on backlist books that aren’t getting the same attention as new releases. Feel free to join us to vote on monthly reads, participate in challenges, and talk about books!
This month's reads are The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, The Goblins of Bellwater by Molly Ringle, and Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Kathryn Ormsbee.
Have you read it? Is it on your TBR? What did you think?

Middle School Monday: Growing Pangs by Kathryn Ormsbee & Molly Brooks
Katie is worried about how things will be different when she goes away to an overnight summer camp for the first time, and about her relationship with her best friend, Kacey. Katie’s “buzzing thoughts” are represented by bees that talk to her, and tell her rules like how if she pulls the zipper on her backpack three times, then nothing bad will happen at camp. When she gets to the camp, several things make her anxiety increase, like discovering that she’s going to be sleeping on the top level of a bunk bed. When Katie starts to make new friends she’s happy at first, but Kacey is jealous and complains that Katie is spending too much time around other people. Even when they return from camp, Kacey acts the same way, and accuses Katie of not caring enough about their friendship.
Will both of these girls be able to work together to save their friendship, or have they grown too far apart?
This graphic novel covers lots of familiar topics like friendship and families, but it also explores issues like what it’s like to be homeschooled and dealing with anxiety and OCD. Give this book to older kids and younger teens who are looking for thoughtful and engaging stories about friendship, mental health, and the challenges of growing up.

I reflect, not for the first time this week, that the twenty-first century is a screwed-up place to be. How is this even a normal human interaction? Back in the old days people waited weeks, even months, to receive letters, and that had to suck. But on a regular day, when they were out and about having normal chats, no one had to wait in crippling suspense to see if their conversation partner would deign to answer them. If said partner remained unresponsive for a full three minutes, the only possible explanation would be that they’d had a stroke, not that they’d heard the question and didn’t want to answer for another few hours.

a sapphic lit primer 🌸
also known as, an opportunity to insist you read my favourites
if you’ve ever found yourself wanting to read more sapphic books, but not quite sure where to start, let this be the post for you! if you’re looking for even more sapphic books, i hope you find something in here too.
there are a few books on here i’ve not read, that i wanted to include to raise awareness of them, more than anything. those are marked by *. as such, you will probably also see a fair few more well known books and authors missed off (but i promise i know about them!).
this is not meant to be at all exhaustive! it’s a collection of sapphic books that i’ve read and would rec, meaning there are still tons more out there. & you can find some of those more at @sapphicreadsdb, readsrainbow (which i co-run with @tenderpotter), sapphiclitbot on twitter & my list of every sapphic book i’ve read.
as ever, this was meant to be a relatively short post. haha.
(i promise i did put links on this post, but for some reason those aren’t working on the blog page. dashboard version seems fine, i think.)

Any youtuber romance books?
Hmm, Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Kathryn Ormsbee (ace m/f YA) would qualify, I think, and Chef's Kiss (adult f/nb), too, though YouTube is more of a springboard IIRC. There's gotta be more... anyone else know?
