BTR REWATCH MINI POST

Big Time Rush Season 1, Episode 8: “Big Time Break”

While I will not be covering this episode in full (I do have some gifsets from it, though), I do wish to ramble a bit about Kendall and Katie, because they've got some great moments together in it.

So. Shows that portray close and healthy sibling dynamics. Makes me insane, right? Right. Siblings who love and look out for each other. When each one manages to be The Protector of the other in some way, regardless of age difference. Brilliant stuff.

And for a show that so often relies on absurdity and just plain off-the-walls humor, it manages to have depth as well, if you're looking for it. Which I am. Why else would I have created this blog but to analyze this delightful series?

Kendall and Katie may possibly be one of my favorite fictional siblings. From the very first episode, there's such a strongly established bond that you can sense even though they really don't interact that much. You see it in the way that Kendall immediately (happily) complies with Katie's request to hear the "Giant Turd" song and when Katie is going on about how often Kendall sings—including when she can't sleep at night.

I won't go into all my thoughts and feelings on the Knight family situation and how a lot of who Kendall is was likely forced upon him when he became "man of the house," but...those thoughts are there. Might explore them at a later date in another post or in a fic, but anyway! As you make your way through the first season, their relationship solidifies more, and you see the warmth. The way that they look out for each other, and the fierceness with which they love each other. Katie is an independent, tough cookie, but she's still a little kid who sees her big brother as a role model and needs his guidance. And Kendall, being the guy who always tries to be there for others and set a good example, does a wonderful job of looking after her while also knowing when to step back. In a lot of ways, he's a combination of brother, father-figure, and friend, which I have OTHER thoughts about (because that is a lot of weight to carry around at 16).

Focusing in on "Big Time Break" though, Kendall's storyline deals with him still wanting to get to know and befriend Jo, even though she has a boyfriend. At one point, Katie overhears Jo on the phone and discovers that Jo doesn't have a boyfriend at all; she's been pretending to have one for fear of romantic pursuits interfering with her career. Perfectly understandable to want to prioritize in life, of course, but Katie is not happy to hear of the deception.

Jo has been LYING to her dear big brother?? Now, she could just sit back and not get involved. After all, Kendall and Jo are older and have their own confusing, teenage lives. It'd be okay if she wanted to shrug and let them figure it out themselves. It doesn't have to be her business.

But Katie Knight can't do that. She goes right over and pulls Kendall from his conversation in a way so very fitting of her character.

This is another aspect of their dynamic that I really like: Katie's complete lack of fear to take charge when needed. Kendall isn't listening to her? She just rolls her eyes and drags him by his ear. Katie Knight, expert on gettin' things done.

She then lets Kendall know that he's been getting played "like a fiddle." Not wanting Jo to be suspicious of their conversation, she cleverly advises Kendall to turn and give Jo the "my little sister is crazy gesture," to which I must include another gif because I love Kendall's execution. He's got the best expressions.

They end the conversation with Katie essentially challenging Kendall to do the right thing, which, in her mind, is to confront Jo and get the truth out of her.

And I love this for two reasons. 1. Katie's vaguely threatening reminder that she looks up to him and 2. They have an adorable handshake! When did they come up with this?? It's so sweet, and I love them.

Lol, so much for a "mini post," but oh well. Kendall and Katie are wonderful siblings, and it delights me. I'm glad they didn't go the route of them being the type of siblings who are always bickering with each other or who ignore each other/generally just don't care. Give me siblings who love each other, who get invested in each other's lives, and who have silly little secret handshakes.

Cheap Thrills

Summary: When the boys go on tour they return to find things different from before and a Katie who hadn't told them the whole truth.

When Katie got the call that she was accepted for the part she was ecstatic. I mean sure she hadn’t planned on pursuing an acting career ever since her short time in commercials but it was always good to have something to fall back on.

Because she wasn’t giving up on majoring in business no matter how good she is at acting she learned that from her big brother Kendall and his singing career but how hockey has always been his dream.

She wouldn’t admit it if anyone asked but ever since she was small she always looked up to Kendall. He was her big brother. He always knew what he wanted, even if that meant putting his dreams aside to help his best friend.

The show wasn’t bad, she would admit that. She had her doubts at first about a medical teen drama when Camilie referred her to the job. It sounded like something she used to watch just to make fun of how cheesy it is but Katie could honestly say she’s enjoyed her time working in the show and she’s made some awesome friends with the co-stars.

Unlike the story of the show and how the character Dash, a teenager who has cystic fibrosis is close best friends with Katies character's ex-boyfriend Leo. She was close friends with him in real life and she thought he was great company fulfilling the role of pranking in her life after the boys left on tour.

She liked all her co-stars but Stro and Zoe had easily fit into her life over just a small amount of time and she didn’t know where she would be without them.

Pulling her t-shirt over her messy bed hair, Katie smiled widely in the mirror. The boys were returning to Palm woods today after a four-month-long tour and she’s been bouncing off the walls for the last week she was surprised her mother hasn’t exploded yet.

Katies thinks it is because mama Knight just as excited as her.

Slipping out of her room and into the empty lounge she called out for her mother a couple of times. “Mom?” Although it was odd, Katie shrugged it off; it was rare that her mother left without telling her. She probably left a note.

Not getting an answer she entered the kitchen planning to get coffee before she did anything else she was definitely not a morning person. Reaching up on her toes trying to grab her mug. She didn't know why the coffee mugs had to be placed so high especially since it was just her and mom living there.

“Ah- “ Her fingers brushed against the mug's handle.

“Got it!” She yelled when she felt the mug in her hands. Despite turning eighteen months ago her height didn’t look any different than when she was fifteen. She barely grew from when she and the boys moved away from Minnesota.

A familiar voice called from behind making her jump slightly because she thought she was home alone.

“Baby sister”

Turning around Katie realized Kendall was standing in front of her she didn’t think he’d be back until later in the day wasting no time she lunged at the blonde making him chuckle.

“Big brother” She knew it was silly to call him big brother after all these years they both were adults and weren’t so long apart in age only a measly three years but she couldn’t resist with everything around her changing it made Katie feel nice knowing something would always be the same.

The three guys and her mom stepped inside the 2J apartment behind Kendall all holding their luggage and a few complaints from a certain someone about how they had to carry their luggage when they were famous now. Which Jennifer quickly shut down.

The brunette set his duffel bags down on the wooden floor with a thump. The apartment didn’t look any different besides it looking so organized but what would you expect with four mentally stunted men away? No one to start a fight or break anything.

But then his eyes led him back to the two hugging inside the kitchen with a nostalgic smile. “I’m glad to see you missed us too,” He said teasingly knowing it would annoy Katie.

Running inside Carlos pushed past him and almost shoved Logan down to the floor to get to the yellow swirly slide. James smiled amused listening to Carlos rant about how much he missed it.

Letting go of her brother she walked over to James who now towered over more so than before. That wasn’t the only difference; his hair was spiker instead of the pretty boy look he had for years.

Not that she thought he was pretty or anything.

Deciding to have a little fun she looked the man up and down with a mischievous grin on her face before she spoke with a bit of cheek. “What’s there to miss?” He dramatically gasped at the short girl. Despite his face, he was having trouble not smiling at her. Maybe he should try acting.

He knew that would only make her continue teasing but it was reassuring to know she hadn't changed. Katie was still the most sarcastic, demanding, and scariest woman he ever knew, and that included Ms. Knight and Kelly.

Delighted in herself in the ability to still get a rise out of him she pressed her body against his chest with a thud hugging him. Forgetting about his thoughts about Katie for the moment James wrapped his arms around her shoulders after the shock hit that Katie Knight was hugging him James knew he had to institute his revenge.

“I knew you liked me” Lowering his voice to an almost flirty tone he whispered close in fact too close to her ear causing a chill to run up her spine and a light pink to cover her chubby cheeks.

But his words were only said with the motive to annoy her.

Katie knew that. She and James developed a relationship complicated at that they got along but only for the teasing and banter to tie them together but no matter what happened they both would be there in a matter of minutes if the other called.

Rolling her eyes. “And.. now the moments are over,” She said letting go and walking the other way as James chuckled and grabbed his bags heading to his room to unpack. He knew he won this time but would she win their next encounter if there was going to be the next time?

Kendall looked at his retreating sister and his best friend in confusion. “There was a moment” He repeated as James laughed harder from in the halls.

Time passed quickly and the sun began to set as the six caught up over things they missed in each other's lives like how Carlos and Stephanie were talking again. The boys groaned when the girl's name was brought up Carlos had been nonstop talking about Stephanie after seeing her at the concert.

Not that they weren’t happy for the guy because they were especially after the first breakup between the two but I guess Love truly does find its way.

Katie wasn’t surprised to hear about Camille and Logan or Jo and her brother rekindling their love. With the boys gone she had to find new people to talk to in palm springs and Tyler and Buddha Bob only allowed her so much company.

“We should go out to eat for dinner” Kendall suggested earning agreement from the rest of the guys turns out that staying on a tour bus meant most of their food was microwaveable.

Ms. Knight almost shrieked suddenly remembering another important event of the day. She had been so caught up with the boy's arrival it slipped her mind. “Oh dear the first episode of Katie's show is being premiered tonight”

Katie threw her arms up behind Kendall signaling her mother to stop; she hadn't told Kendall during their calls because she honestly didn’t think she would get the call back about getting the role.

Furrowing his eyebrows confusingly he hadn’t heard any mention of a show or audition to him or from his mother before. “What show?”

“Your acting?” James repeated after Kendall. He never thought Katie would pursue any showbiz career he remembered hearing about the couple of commercials she did but that was just to get into the palm wood springs school.

“That’s so awesome!” Carlos cheered, causing a small smile to spread on her face. She could always count on Carlos to be supportive.

Shrugging her shoulders she slipped back into the couch playing with the strings of her hoodie. “It’s just this small part and I didn’t tell you because I didn’t think I would get the part”

Nudging her shoulder with his James smiled encouragingly. “I bet you doing great I mean they did call you back” .“Yea I guess you're right” Nodding her head lightly it did make sense and if she was ever to do such a bad job they would always fire her. They had no reason to keep her and lie to her.

James rolled his eyes a small huff leaving his lips teasingly but a grin widened on his face as he looked at the small brunette. “I know I’m right”

“Don’t go overboard” Her face twisted from annoyance to an amused smirk. “We don’t want to inflate your big head”

Everyone was in the same places from before on the lounge but holding snacks and beverages now. Kendall paused what he was doing when a sudden horrible thought came to mind. “As your brother, I have to ask this show doesn’t have any mature scenes right?” His nose crinkled at the thought, almost making Katie snort; he acted like such a child sometimes.

The girl put her hand on her chin pretending to think.

“Well..”

The four guys looked at the girl startled and maybe a little scared as her mother bit the inside of her cheek holding back a chuckle she sure has missed all of her kids under one roof even if chaos is sure to be involved.

Since Katie wasn’t an adult when she started the role, her legal guardian and of course her Manager had to look over the contract so Ms. Knight knew there wouldn't be any risque scenes.

“That isn’t funny” Kendall rubbed his hand down his face, a small groan coming out of his mouth.

“Ok ok in all seriousness there isn’t anything bad in this episode” She reassured Kendall before he could do anything dramatic like fainting which he looked close to doing.

“In this episode?”

Ignoring her brother’s whines and Logan who picked up on her wording she was buzzing with excitement to watch the episode and see it for herself so she clicked the remote.

As the show slowly ended and the credits began Katie turned off the tv waiting to see what everyone thought whether it was boring or downright bad when everyone began clapping easing her nerves. “You did great, baby sister,” Kendall exclaimed, patting her head like she was a child.

Katie glanced around the room smiling at all the appraises from her family when she realized James was the only one who hadn’t said anything. She looked at the man next to her, a small frown on her lips hopefully hidden by the dark.

Because Katie Knight did not frown or cry over any boy no matter if this was James his opinion meant nothing to her. “C’mon James, was I that bad?” Accept it did his opinion meant something to her.

James looked as though he was entranced. Katie looked like an actor he would have had a crush on back in Minnesota; he could vividly imagine a poster of Katie hanging on his wall like a normal teenager. “It’s like you’re a natural at acting” He murmured under his breath causing her to look at him confused.

Trying to change conversations he admitted he didn’t like the two male characters who were getting close to Katie or Emma but it's the same thing. Chucking a piece of Twizzlers into his mouth he looked over at Carlos. “I don’t think I like Jordi or Leo though”

“Yea I didn’t like Kara she was pretty mean,” Carlos said oblivious to James' reasoning for disliking two fictional characters.

Finding Carlos adorable but she still wanted to stand up for her friend “Hey! That’s my friend” Katie chucked one of James Twizzleres at Carlos's head admitting a “What?Why?” from both of them.

Ignoring the two sulking men Kendall looked at his sister in surprise he knew his baby sister had met some famous people both from palm springs and because of the band but to think she was starting to form her strings within LA was mind-boggling. “Wait so you’re telling me you know a famous actor”

Katie looked at her brother waiting to see if he understood what he just said but she just sighed rolling her eyes. “Kendall we’re all famous”

Somehow the boys continued to forget besides James that they were famous now and not just because of a Big time rush the four were beginning to find their careers for when the glory of BTR was finally all over.

Logan was set on going to medical school online classes only got him so far and Carlos surprisingly was showing an interest in acting mainly for the stunts but he was good at it lastly James he stuck with what he knew singing and modeling determined to make his mark in Hollywood.

“We’re a long way from Minnesota” Logan muttered like the day they stepped foot into palm wood springs and their life’s changed forever. For better or worse she wouldn’t want it any other way. Katie couldn’t be more thankful to her four hockey-headed best friends.
