i can’t stop thinking about the parallels between lena and morgana.
on the one hand, you have lena, who was told over and over that simply because of who she was- her last name- that she was a villain. she was destined to be bad. and she wanted so desperately to be good but struggled so hard with the darkness inside her. she had times where the darkness won. but she also had kara. kara never wanted her to feel alone. always believed she was good. she could be better than what everyone thought of her. so, ultimately, lena overcame her darkness.
on the other hand, you have morgana. she grew up believing that magic was unequivocally evil and it poisoned everything and everyone it touched. and then she finds out she has magic herself. she’s scared. she wants to use magic as a force for good. but she can’t possibly tell anyone. she tries to confide in merlin- the one person who could make her feel less alone and show her that yes, magic CAN be a force for good. but merlin does nothing and instead continues to let morgana feel alone and ostracized. he stood by and allowed morgana to let her fear and hatred consume her instead of showing her the light. and as a result, morgana fell so far into her darkness there was no coming back from it.
i am going INSANE over the fact that the only real difference between lena and morgana is that one of them wasn’t alone and the other was. ALL YOU NEED IS SOMEONE TO BELIEVE IN YOU AND ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

The only thing keeping me from finishing A Court of Thorns and Roses (yes, the first book. I’m late to the hype) is the fact that Feyre could fail or have Tam or Lucien killed and that will wreck me… I have like 30 pages left and could finish it tonight but I’M SO SCARED

Guest: I have the digital key, but could I get an actual key too? Me: Sure thing. It won't be for your room, though. And I'm not telling you which room it's for, you'll just have to make your way through the hallway guessing at the doors.

if i somehow haven't been clear enough: i am pro-choice. my blog is pro-choice. if you do not think that roe vs wade being overturned is a flagrant disrespect of the autonomy of people with uteruses, extra specifically low income and POC, gtfo my blog. this isn't something we can agree to disagree about, it is right versus wrong and freedom versus oppression.

i think the most somber realization ive had in recent times has to do with that one quote, it's either from a poem or a public art piece, that reads something to the effect of "there's love for those in the next world, but not for us" (<- not a perfect quote, just as best as i remember it)
i remember when i first read it i wholly rebuked it; "what do you mean there's no love for us in this world? sure it's not perfect but we just need a bit more time to make it so, we're nearly there" it made me so angry, the suggestion that we're not a part of that next world. but i get it now. how could i not, now? look at the shape of the world we live in, look at the grave injustices committed in the name of preserving power.
that's not to say that we don't have any love at all. of course we do, we can't help it. we love ourselves and we love each other. some of us do, at least. and we need that love and we need hope in order to galvanize us, to bring forth rage and righteousness that might spur us forward to confront current evil in the name of future change. change is uncomfortable and painful— we need love and hope to buoy us along.
it's just that what we call love isn't perfect, yet. an imperfect fragment of the real thing. it's the closest we have to the real thing, so we call it love, but it's an approximation. its only in the next world, after we've undone all the buckles of cruelty in this one, that we might see what real love, unfettered from the weight of hatred, truly looks like.
and it's sad, of course. when you're little, you have all the stars in your eyes. the next world is in the palm of your hand— you'll be one of the many in your generation to see things become truly good. and then you realize how far reality is from that perfect destination. this world, the way it is structured to preserve power and domination over all else, over goodwill and genuine care, has to die first before the next world settles. and it's sad, not because these things aren't horrible, but because this is the world we live in, and we can't help but want for it to be good. the same way we look back at atrocities in the past and are glad that that version of the world is but a ghost in history is how the future will look back at our time too. rightfully so, at that. but it's still our time and our world, and it's sad that it couldn't be the "next" world where we can enjoy love and peace in its truest form.
i call it a somber realization because it is not a hopeless one. it's sad for all the reasons i described above, but it isn't hopeless. the same way our the previous generation hoped that the world we would experience would be one that eliminated all sources of strife is exactly what we will hope for the next generation. of course, hope is what moves us to confront the current state of things so that we might usher in that new world. hope is what drives us to goodness. it's difficult to be good, to fight for good, to claw away at current evil in the name of the goodness it selfishly refuses. so we have to hope that braving all that difficulty is worth it. and it is worth it, even if this world has to die first.
there's love for those in the next world, but not for us. but the only way that next world comes into being is if i, now, desperately work to bring it forth. so i will, in the vain hopes that i might get to see a peek of what love in the next world really looks like.
