I have what amounts to intermittent anemia, but I didn't realize it until I was an adult and moved out of my parents' house. The reason for this was that my mom cooked a lot of lentil soup in an old cast-iron Dutch oven, and the iron leached into the soup and more or less supplemented my diet enough that I didn't notice. Then I moved out, got a steel pot, and started having symptoms.

I explained this to my mom today, ending with, "And that's why there's a cast-iron Dutch oven on my Amazon list now." And this conversation ensued.

Mom: Do you want to take my Dutch oven home with you?

Me: No, Mom. You should keep that one. YOU cook with that.

Mom: Not THAT much!

Me: I probably got this condition from you, so no, I don't want you to have to stop supplementing your own diet. There's other cast-iron cookware in the world. I'll be okay.

Mom: Do you want my other one?

Me: I'm sorry?

Mom: The other one. The bean pot.

Me: What's the bean pot?

Mom: You know, the five-quart pot we cooked beans in when we went camping in the camper van. Gosh, it's been sitting in the back of the cupboard for (approximately 95% of my life). It's cast iron. You want it? You'll probably have to clean it.

Me: ...

Mom: ...

Me: ... are you a wizard?

Mom: I'm a mom.

Me: I withdraw my question. Yes, please.

So now I have a somewhat wizardly five-quart pot to clean up and my hematocrit is about to be very happy.

Hello!

**clears throat** Good morning! I am finally getting back here and hope to be much more regular in my habits. 

First, thanks to all who have been so kind to send me notes. :) I am alive and mostly okay and all that. I have a rather horrid tendency to “go tortoise” occasionally in my life, but this phase rarely lasts for more than a month at a time. This last time, though, it was different. I attribute the duration and severity and depth of my tortoise-shell experience to the following:

* My usual laptop ceased to function properly and, with it, all my usual “haunts” online. Email came through on my Kindle - but typing on that is INSANE for me and even when I tried to use my husband’s iPad Pro (!!) it wasn’t much better. And the other computer in the house isn’t *mine* and I have had issues with it. Sigh. Working on that.

* Alzheimers. Not me, my paternal unit. Some of you might remember I referenced this in an author’s note once upon a time, but this past Christmas was the first year he wasn’t *there* anymore. He’s alive and well, but not *there*, and that was kind of a blow. They call Alzheimer’s the Long Goodbye for a reason and I am coming to terms with it, slowly. 

* Publishing issues in Real Life. Between my former publisher shutting its door to a distributor bowing out of the picture, my entire writing life was jerked violently off its usual track and that was disconcerting enough for me to wonder if I still felt I wished to do it, anymore. After twenty years, you know? Maybe retire? But no, here I am. Bit by bit, getting back into the rhythms. Whew.

* Autism Mom stuff. My younger son is a teenager on the Spectrum and is at a time of life where a lot of the focus is on transitioning to adulthood, with all the stuff that entails for a Special Needs person. I am good with the educational system, but the Social Services system is not familiar territory, and that’s been stressing me out. A lot. My thanks to all the Autism Family Folk who have touched base and offered their nods of understanding. I am here for you, too, if you have this as a part of your life.

* SimCity. I am not kidding. In an effort to make a new connection with my husband of a quarter-century, I asked him about this game he was playing. And . . . OH MY. I had no idea it would become such a thing for my brain. My husband laughs at how much fun I have had with this thing, and it seems to have occupied the Need to Write parts of my brain that otherwise send me nightmares when I don’t write for days at a time. Yes, no nightmares for months. I have been astonished. But it is not productive. One can hide in one’s city, but it is not conducive to getting anything actually accomplished. (Except making Epic buildings and so on, yeah?) 

So, I am trying to get back into the patterns of my life again and hope to be back more regularly. In the HP Fandom, I have a story in the works that is about 14K in to a multi-chapter bit of relationship building. I have promised Katmom, my long-suffering friend and all around amazing chick, not to post it until the story is complete on my end, no matter how much I might enjoy the encouragement. lol But she has given me leave to post the prologue (it’s epistolary in nature and you know how fun that can me) if I want. That might happen.

TL;dr - Lots of real life stuff has been happening over the past few months, but I’m trying to get back to my usual thing. Thank you for all the reads and reviews and stuff on my FanFic stories. New stuff coming soon!
