Kids kinda stop picking up on accents after about 3 or 4 years old and Bruce is usually depicted as being at the very least 8 when his parents died, that being said I think it would be really funny if Brucie Wayne had a sort of British lilt, not quite an accent but definitely an inflection, that he got from Alfred. Batman is stone cold American tho. His kids are still trying to figure out which one is the real accent because he switches back and forth so fluently.

2012 Splinter’s origin is so fucking wild my dudes. Like, imagine, you’re a martial arts master, you settle down with your wife and child, and your best friend just. Absolutely cannot be Normal about it. So he comes and burns your house down. Shit. Fuck. Now you’re a widower and you’ve lost your child. What do you do? Well there’s nothing left for you in Japan, might as well go to America. So you go to New York. You’re grieving, but with time you start to heal, but you’re still feeling a bit of that empty nest and you need something to take care of. Alright, time to get a pet. So you go to the pet store, and you could get a normal pet like a cat or a dog, but oh man those freshly hatched turtles are really cute, and you like a challenge. So you leave the pet store with your new Emotional Support Turtles when you hear some shady shit going on, and you’re nosy as fuck, so you follow, with your Turtles. And then some guys who talk weird attack you and you get slimed and suddenly you’re a six foot tall rat and the pets you just bought that morning are an awful lot like human infants. What the fuck. How is this your life. Live in the sewers for the next 15 years.

Public Domain cartoon characters from Golden Age comic books

Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit going (mostly) into the public domain is a pretty big deal. In the next ten years a lot of animation from the 1930s will wind up in the hands of all artists who want to use them. But did you know there's a huge amount of cartoon characters from the 1940s that are totally free to use? It isn't just cartoons that starred on the silver screen that have fallen out of copyright. (Of course, I'm using the word "cartoon" somewhat loosely...)

See, when US copyright law was revised in 1976 and went into effect in 1978, works created before 1964 were required to have their copyright renewed before the end of 1980, or else they would become public domain. Hundreds if not thousands of Hollywood movies and other types of media had been made by studios and publishing companies that went bankrupt and were completely dissolved decades prior to this new law. This included the cartoons made by studios such as Bray, Van Beuren, and many others- but it also included comic books.

If you weren't a big comic book company like DC or Marvel, chances are you shuttered your doors sometime in the 1950s or early 1960s. And during the 1940s, with the rise in popularity of Looney Tunes, Woody Woodpecker, Tom and Jerry, and Droopy, comic book publishers were printing tons and tons of comic books starring wacky, slapstick-oriented animal characters. Most of these titles went out of copyright, and there are lots of fun and interesting characters to be found in them.

One of the most historically notable is Supermouse. When the first Mighty Mouse cartoon premiered, he was called Supermouse, but what they didn't know was that Pines comics had already taken the name, and successfully sued for copyright infringement even though they were both parodies of Superman.

One of the most interesting titles I've come across is Funny Films. The conceit of the series is that these are actually cartoons you can watch in a movie theater, except it's a comic book. A bit confusing, I know.

The end result is a series of fourth wall breaks so absolutely thorough in their scope that the fourth wall really doesn't exist anymore, barring actually jumping out of the page (or your computer screen) and blowing up your living room. They talk to the audience, jump out of the screen, and even show up late for the cartoon to start. This is of course the bookends to a whole bunch of slapstick gags and goofy dialogue.

Another interesting series, especially if you're a fan of Archie, is Hi-Jinx. They basically took the premise of teeny-boppers in high school and made them into funny animals. Most of the stories have something to do with swing music and dancing.

And although they're crudely drawn, one of the more unique character concepts is Pussy Katnip, found in various titles scattered across the mid-1940s, usually buried amongst a bunch of more normal stories with ordinary human characters. Pussy Katnip looks like one of your classic film noir glamorous beauties, except she's an anthropomorphic cat. Think Minerva Mink but feline. She may appear to be a femme fatale at first, but she's actually a crimefighter. To do this she chugs a mysterious beverage that gives her enhanced strength and intelligence. She's sort of a mystery-solving superhero.

Her appearances are random and kind of hard to find. Here are the titles of the ones currently circulating online: All Your Comics (1944 issue) All Top Comics (one-shot) All Good Comics Everybody’s Comics (1944 issue) Green Mask v1 #11 Ribtickler v1 #1 All Great Comics (1945 issue) Book of All-Comics Green Mask v2 #2 Rocket Kelly #2 Zoot Comics #1

Often these comics, especially in the early '40s, remind me of the artwork of underground comics of the '70s- not quite rubberhose, not quite Looney Tunes. The kind of thing you might find on a punkabilly album cover.

And ocassionally you'll come across characters with a suspiciously familiar name:

One thing to watch out for is the occasional Donald Duck knock-off, some more obvious than others.

So if you're like me and you're too impatient to wait for Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to fall out of copyright, and you want to do something more unusual and unexpected, there are dozens and dozens of comic books with silly, wacky characters that can be utilized in your own original stories, cartoons, and what have you- and you can monetize them too!

I want a hunger games miniseries remake done by showtime. Make it as dark and gritty as the books were. Like, remember back in the 2010s how photoshopped Katniss was in the promos? Remember all the makeup brands doing collabs so You, Too! Can Look Like a Tribute! A Citizen Of Panem!!!! Look Like Effie Trinket!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone made jokes about how when peeta and katniss get together their ship name is peeniss. But how katnip actually L O V E S gale. A HEMSWORTH. there was no actual like emphasis on the fact that these are literally children. Slaying. Each other. Like victors, who were sixteen at the MOST had to resort to under-the-table sex work, and were abused by adult predators who were willing to put up insane amounts of money to take advantage of small, traumatized children. But we talked about the love triangle!!!! The braids!!!!! Omg peeniss!! Girl boss on fire!!!!

No. We need a miniseries that do the books justice and show how terrifying they are. I need the series to gut me like a fish the same way the books do.

Watching Porky the Rain-Maker and Sweet Si*ux back to back is so interesting because I really get to see what Avery had that Hardaway and Dalton didn’t. Obviously the latter short’s racism is the main issue, but even if you replaced the cast with, say, talking goats, it wouldn’t be very good. I always knew Avery was a comedic genius, but seeing one of his classics remade by lesser directors really made that more obvious to me. Maybe I’m being a little harsh on H+D but they’re no Avery.

VERY MUCH SO YEAH!! i felt the same way and that’s definitely why i wanted to put such a heavy emphasis on the comparison aspect in that review. as you said, it isn’t even limited to just the racism (but that sure helps!); there are many parts of the remake that i wish just straight up stole and didn’t alter because they would have been better off as a result (like the watermelon boiling gag. i guess the melon deflating in the remake is to show that the water evaporated but…)

the “don’t lean on the platform son ya bother me” gag and ending both being misinterpreted i think especially go to show the general lack of understanding—the remake’s equivalent of the platform gag feels flat out cruel and mean-spirited when the original is more witty and quick (and as i said in the review, Porky’s nonplussed reaction ensures the audience doesn’t feel uncomfortable; the joke is the priority, not the feelings) and the remake’s ending being everything Avery was making fun of in the original is very funny LOL

YOU ARE CORRECT ON BOTH. to be blunt, Hardaway and Dalton suck and Avery does not. i’m convinced Ben Hardaway is more responsible for these problems—it’s probably not nearly as black and white as i just made it out to be, but Cal Dalton directed a handful of shorts with Cal Howard and overall they were MUCH better. it sucks that 2 out of the 3 are riddled with deplorable stereotypes, but they made Katnip Kollege which i think is one of the best shorts of the ‘30s; likewise, A-Lad-In Bagdad does have a funny scene where a talent judge shoots two vaudevillians to death ON SCREEN and is very well executed, and Porky’s Phoney Express has some interesting filmmaking maneuvers that stood out to me (like a full on iris out and iris back in transition in the middle of the short, usually they just used a transparent iris wipe so to see the full on opaque, black iris out and back in i think is a really fun little anomaly.) Cal Dalton was 100% a much better animator than director, but when he wasn’t with Hardaway his shorts didn’t have the same problems as they do when they were together

Porky the Rain-Maker is definitely on the cruder side because it was a cruder time period for the studio, but it is so successful in its simplicity (and the gags actually being funny helps too.) Tex was very meticulous about his filmmaking and it’s part of why he burnt out so quickly—and why we’re sort of wading through the travelogue era in the current point of these reviews, because they were quick quota pleasers—but his simplicity and CONFIDENCE is so commendable. in some of his shorts (usually at MGM) he will go as far as to make a character repeat the premise of the plot/conflict MULTIPLE TIMES so the audience understands what is going to happen without a doubt. Deputy Droopy does this and it’s one of his greatest cartoons, again honing in that winning combo of simple plot + funny gags + funny execution. simplicity usually equates confidence; Ben Hardaway was NOT a confident director and it absolutely shows in his very meandering filmmaking style

It’s almost impressive the degree to which TMNT 03 does not want to commit to their world building being either magic or science. Magic is real except when it’s not, it’s just other dimensions and aliens and other planets but also demons and sorcerers are 100% real and necromancy is achieved several times throughout the show but only through the use of science and also there’s chi which is not magic and is something everyone has but also it gives you superpowers and also the turtles and Splinter might be telepathic but only with each other or they could just be supremely mentally disciplined, we’ll never tell you.

It’s annoying when Avoki isn’t home when Katerah wants them to be. Which happens a lot. She spends all this time getting to their place and they just aren’t there. Alekos will say they’re working but won’t tell her where and they don’t even know when they’ll come back! Annoying.
