Novel Nuggets - Still Catching Up
So many outstanding reviews to write. Here are just a few more. I was not expecting to love The Blood Trials by N. E. Davenport as much as I did, but holy hell did I. It was my favorite book read in March. In The Blood Trials, Ms. Davenport creates an exciting story that also teaches the dangers of inherent racism. I love Ikenna and her loyalty, as well as her determination to succeed; I…

Dungeon Meshi!!!!!!!! Here's 3D print files for Marcille's staff; it's a pretty basic piece that's easy to print and assemble and designed at a low resolution so you can spend all your time slathering it with texture.
Tumblr media
If you want a printed kit, those are up for preorder here and should be shipping within a couple weeks.
(We'll have a finished one at Katsu because of our beloved @shaburdies dusting her 2019 costume off!)

Brad Downey 2008
Kidult 2011
Occupy Oakland

Motion Capture Suit from CATS Cosplayer: @loganarei  (IG)
Well my wife and I love cats the Broadway musical. And we had a pretty decent sized group for a cats cosplay group for Katsucon 2020. Right before the pandemic. I had an actual cosplay of Old Deuteronomy and my wife was Etcetera. There were maybe around 10 of us in the group.
I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be hilarious if someone just went in a mocap suit and said they were a random cat from the terrible 2019 movie. So I decided when I got sick of being old Deuteronomy (it was large and very very hot), I could be that cat. I just bought a zenti suit and some ping pong balls. Wasn’t sure if I was even going to end up doing it. But I decided to while I was at katsu. I put it together in the hotel. My wife made a sign. I went out on the floor and people laughed. I love it. I love walking by and hearing it click in people and they start laughing.

Next on the road to Katsu and my second Witch costume is Umbreon.
I made her in 2019 and planned to have her at Katsucon 2020. But then, on the last day, I ended up having a medical emergency and had to leave the con early 🥲
So, it's time for take two!

Charles Note: Eating meat again
I haven't eaten meat in 15-20 years, short of the few times some schmuck mixes up our Taco Bell order and I get a bite in before realizing.
Our first trip to Japan, I tried to avoid not only meat, chicken, beef, pork, but fish, and if you consider that meat, there's meat in nearly everything. Dashi, the soup stock used in everything from miso to ramen and even things you wouldn't expect to contain or benefit from the flavor of fish, and bonito, a dried fish flake used to top and flavor various dishes, is everywhere. I tried to avoid it, short of eating like a monk or exclusively going to Westernized vegan restaurants, it's very difficult, and saying you "don't eat meat" won't exclude fish products or sometimes even chicken. I also missed out on a lot of good food. In our future trips, and when eating Japanese food in the US, I let fish slide.
When we were last here in 2019, I wanted to try wagyu beef but committed to waiting "until our honeymoon." In the time it took for COVID to come and become less of a huge concern and more a fact of life, I have learned about other unique food opportunities that might push the boundaries of letting a little meat slip in.
I started taking supplements to adjust my stomach to eating things I don't typically eat. Our first night, Miranda wanted to eat at a ramen restaurant we have tried before, but I gave her my pork chashu. This time, I ate it.
Tumblr media
Then, on our second day, I had on our map a convenience store and restaurant that serves prepackaged katsu (cutlet) sandwiches with Ultraman branding. I have tried to replicate katsu without meat before, and while the taste wasn't something I can do without, the sandwich itself was very good. Japanese bread is always incredible, and you could put tonkatsu sauce on anything and make it better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We went with a friend and her family to the restaurant used as a shooting location in Shin Ultraman, which in the film was shown to be a typical izakaya, or Japanese style pub. In reality, we had a multi course family style dinner which included beef and tofu hot pot. This was probably closer to the "first real meat" experience I was expecting. I am not sure it was something I couldn't do without, but I want to keep trying things. I am interested to try a few more unique dishes once I have an understanding of what real meat tastes like again.

Sunday)

S (Sunday S)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
週刊少年サンデーS(周刊Sunday S)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sunday/GET THE SUN!)

Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sunday Webry)
Tumblr media Tumblr media

The use of fire extinguishers for protests goes back ca. 10 years. Fire extinguisher graffiti comes from gangs in LA, then was used by graffiti writers, popularized around 2007, mostly in NY and Paris (Nug, Psy, Toam, Katsu, Kidult, Krink) and then in Berlin with Just and Thrill, but also actions like Brad Downey making the Berlin windows of Lacoste green in 2008, then it spread through the internet, started to be used in protests like Occupy Oakland 2011, Student Protests in Italy 2013, antifa marking fascist fashion stores in Berlin ca. 2012, further anticapitalist protests in Italy, particularly in Milano, in the following years (like the No Expo protest 2015). Since 2019 it is picked up in the climate protests, by Extinction Rebellion, Just Stop Oil and now the Last Generation/Letzte Generation.

Today marks the two-year anniversary of Virgil Abloh’s tragic passing. On paper Virgil was an Illinois-born artist, architect, and fashion designer but in reality he was so much more. A world changer. Abloh shifted a whole generation through his catalogue of work and contributions, always being “open source” about his work, and leaving behind artifacts such as his “Free Game” resource or his iconic talks in order to spread knowledge and open doors for others. A true student, turned teacher, turned master that found a way to unite the various disciplines into one cohesive cultural fabric.
As quoted in VOGUE, Virgil was greatly inspired by his Nintendo days in the late 80s. Screenshots and video from the OFFKAT video game experience, which was released as part of the collaboration between Abloh’s fashion label Off-White and legendary graffiti writer and artist KATSU. Also pictured is his 2019 all-green Lower East Side pop up which featured his signature model-mannequin playing on a tonal PS4.
LONG LIVE VIRGIL 9/30/80 - 11/28/21 ✨✨🕊️✨✨
