Random Thought: Why does all "90's Anime style" fanart just look like Sailor Moon?
Okay, obviously not all fanart looks like it. But if you were to type in "90s anime style" here on Tumblr or DeviantArt at the time of this post, it at least seems to be the majority stand-in for 90s anime aesthetic, right? Especially in the characters' eyes.
Don't me wrong, this is not a knock against Sailor Moon. It is a great anime, and the collective character designs by Kazuko Tadano, Ikuko Ito, and Mari Tominaga among other staff are iconic. So iconic that Tadano was brought back as the character designer for the latest Sailor Moon movies. That is quite the staying power.
But let's be fair, there are plenty of 90s anime out there that can also be used as inspiration. So, here are the names of 11 character designers alongside some gifs of shows/projects they worked on in that role. Some you may not know but you've seen their work, and others you probably know for their distinct art style or association with a franchise.
Things worth noting: First, the years listed here with some anime may reflect when the artists' work started airing, rather than when the anime itself actually started. Some folks listed here enter their projects mid-production in other roles, while others are in the role from the start. Second, each entry will list 1 or 2 projects aired/released during the 90s, but it will be noted if the artist's role continues beyond that with certain franchises. Lastly, these artists are listed in no particular order, so no "top 11" hierarchy. With that said, here's our examples:
Hisashi Eguchi (Roujin Z[1991], Sonic the Hedgehog CD [1993])
2. Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru(Dragon Ball franchise (Z [1993-96], GT [1996], Daima [2024]), Digimon franchise [1999-2002, 2019-2023])
3. Kumiko Takahashi (Cardcaptor Sakura [1998-2000], Birdy The Mighty[1996])
4. Takahiro Yoshimatsu (Trigun[1998], Slayers franchise[1995-97])
5. Atsuko Nakajima (Ranma 1/2[1989-1992], You're Under Arrest[1996])
6. Sayuri Ichiishi (Pokémon[Pokémon design: 1996-present, human character design: 1996-2017])
7. Atsuko Ishida (Magic Knight Rayearth[1994-1995])
8. Masaya Onishi (Yu Yu Hakusho[1993-1994])
9. Toshihiro Kawamoto(Cowboy Bebop[1998-1999], Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team[1996])
10. Hiroshi Osaka(Gundam franchise[Mobile Suit Victory Gundam: 1993-1994, Mobile Fighter G-Gundam:1994-1995])
11. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto(Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water[1990-1991], Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise[1995-1997, 2007-2021])
Might've leaned a bit more on the Shonen side of things than Shojo, but I hope you can see my point😅. There are tons of 90s anime out there with their own unique feel and aesthetic. These are only 11 names that I found.
For anyone drawing 90s anime style fanart, I hope this has given you some inspiration, and I encourage anyone reading this to look up your favourite anime on Anime News Network's encyclopedia and see who's responsible for helping bring your favorite characters to life on screen and what other shows they've worked on.

Sailor Moon Anime Continues With Sailor Moon Cosmos 2-Part Film in Early Summer 2023
After the release of the Sailor Moon Eternal anime films in 2021, fans were waiting for the last arc to be re-animated in the updated Sailor Moon Crystal. And now that wait is nearly over with the announcement tonight that the Stars arc will be adapted into a two-part film titled Sailor Moon Cosmos. The first trailer and visual for the duology confirmed the new staff members and returning cast from the Sailor Moon Crystal franchise.
Tomoya Takahashi (Gatchaman Crowds assistant director) will be directing both parts of Sailor Moon Cosmos at both Toei Animation and Studio Deen. Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) is writing the screenplay, while Kazuko Tadano (Sailor Moon seasons 1 and 2) returns once more for the character designs. Yasuharu Takanashi (Sailor Moon Crystal) is producing the music again for the films, with Yumiko Kuga from Studio Jack (Deaimon: Recipe for Happiness) as the art director on the films.
Sailor Moon Cosmos will be adapting the "final battle" from the original manga series by Naoko Takeuchi, which was previously adapted as the last arc of the original Sailor Moon anime dubbed "Sailor Moon Sailor Stars." The two-part film continues on from the Sailor Moon Eternal two-part film, which was released in early 2021 in Japan and on Netflix on June 3 around the world. Eternal continued the Sailor Moon Crystal TV anime series, which is streaming here on Crunchyroll, which describes it as such:
Based on Naoko Takeuchi’s legendary manga series, Sailor Moon Crystal retells the story of Sailor Moon as she searches for her fellow Sailor Guardians and the Legendary Silver Crystal to stop the dark forces of Queen Beryl.

Sorry, but what's the difference between Rei's hairstyles?
This post got very long
Naoko has like 3 ways of drawing depending on when she’s rushed, habit, or when she has time, and just her style changes throughout the years.
In older art like the Prototypes and Tankoban and majority of Arc 1 and 2, Rei’s hair was pretty straight and wide, her bangs swoop to the side like Makoto and Minako but covers majority of her forehead and ears. There was a rogue strand of hair from time to time, sometimes Rei’s hair is in a part, sometimes it’s not
This is what Tadano used when designing SM Classic, Naoko has more free reign to change Rei’s hair cus it’s a manga but since anime is well, animated, the other 90s CDs were all kind of stuck with the designs Tadano left them with.
Tadano
Tominaga
Itoh
(This is Sailor Stars settei but this is Itoh’s style)
Tamegai
Tamegai’s style in Stars is a little special cus he yeets most of Tadano’s style out the window and uses Naoko style at the time for the most reference, even the settei for Eternal Sailor Moon is strikingly similar to the one Naoko made.
anyway;
Naoko’s early style, early 90s.
Later on Rei’s hair gets more “round” and curves inward similar to Ami and it’s not as flat (most of her hair drawings end up losing that straighter look) and Rei’s bangs usually ends in a big ol puff. Usually when she’s rushed Naoko draws everyones hair in that kind of way. I wanna say you see this style around Arc 3 and later on.
Shinsoban takes this later style but is just basically softer and cuter, same for Kanzenban but that tries to go back to the roots and makes Rei’s hair a lot straighter and flatter compared to everyone else. The bangs now open in a part. There is the occasional rogue strand.
Crystal is tricky cus you need to know where Sakou gets the inspiration from. Which is Kanzenban and inside the manga (where Rei’s hair comes out in the puff more often than the covers and splash pages), and then you gotta know the later designers; Takahashi and Tadano take from the previous style.
Like the 90s, the CDs of Crystal were all kind of stuck with the designs Sakou left them with while they add their own spin to it
So Sakou as we all know takes from Kanzenban but also from various forms of Naoko’s style during the years. And Tadano and Takahashi just follow suit so there’s not much difference between Sakou and Takahashi outside of artstyle. . While the artstyle may have changed, the designs really haven’t. So Takahashi still draws Rei’s hair strands coming inward, like Sakou, so I feel Tadano might do the same?
There’s a very boxy style to Sakou’s designs, more use of squares than circles.
Takahashi
(Sakou)
The art we see in the game art is that Rei’s hair seems to be taking inspo from the 90s more-so with the bangs covering her entire forehead, how it curves backward like Minako, instead of inward like Ami and the lack of a part, the shape being more Itoh or Tamegai based, this game style feels very 90s style but late-in-the-series 90s style. I can’t pinpoint it exactly… but since we have Sakou and Takahashi together to compare I can’t see the Crystal style besides the zigzag highlight on every strand (Sakou defintely, Tadano and most of teh 90s anime’s zig zag highlights took up the hair in a rectangular way) and the color.
Oddly enough now that I stare at it, it kind of reminds me of Fukano’s style, maybe even Tominaga??
There’s definitely more 90s in this design more than Crystal, imo

Lyrics :
i could never find the right way to tell you
have you noticed i've been gone?
cause i left behind the home that you made me
but i will carry it along
mm it's a long way forward
so trust in me
i'll give them shelter like you've done for me
and i know i'm not alone
you'll be watching over us
until you're gone
when i'm older i'll be silent beside you
I know that words are not enough
and they won't need to know our names or our faces
but they will carry on for us

Hugtto Precure: Final Thoughts
Leave me here while I continue to bawl at the movie. SO MANY BABIES!!!!!
Kawamura is back at it again with the character design, but with Junichi Sato as director, I knew this wasn’t gonna be a typical formula for this season. Although, I noticed a lot of parenting aspects going on throughout Hugtto. Well, Sato, you think I wouldn’t notice, but I did.
-----------------
I DID NOTICE A LOT OF SAILOR MOON REFERENCES. Two in particular.
Dr. Trauma and Ruru reminded me a lot of Hotaru Tomoe and her father in Sailor Moon S. However, I wonder if anyone noticed the whole...Black Moon arc aspect. Hear me out.
The whole Hugtan meeting Hana and the finale ending where Hana becomes a mother to someone who LOOKS like Hugtan, reminds me a LOT of Usagi and Chibiusa. When George had Hana and Hugtan alone in the final episodes...all I could think of was that moment where Prince Demande tried to keep "Sailor Moon” for himself via kidnapping. Like seriously, Sato?!
Oh, but the baby thing that keeps coming up in almost every episode, I keep recalling something much...more personal. Followers of mine who knew me since 2011, YOU MIGHT KNOW WHERE THIS IS GOING.
Episode 21 of the original Sailor Moon series.
The scene with Hiromi, Kazuko, and Asatou. Asatou had a child with him. HMMM, I WONDER IF THIS WAS ANY INSPIRATION FOR HUGTTO SO MANY YEARS LATER.
(Nice try. I’m not stupid, Sato.)
--------------
Okay, enough rambling off-topic with all the references. Let me just get to the point.
Hugtto! Precure, surprisingly, had a great premise going on. The theming of destiny, the future, and notably, PARENTING was a unique yet risky attempt. I’m very skeptical with how time-travel is handled, but at no time did I notice any inconsistencies or anything off-putting. Now, I do want to mention one little nitpick. I feel like as soon as Amour and Macherie stepped into the picture, things got weird. For about an arc or two, I swear the EmiruRuru craze refuse to cease, but I didn’t let it bother me much. Other than that...
Yeah, I seriously loved it. The group dynamic was tight with Hana being probably the coolest modern leader thus far. Hugtto! has decent to stunning animation sequences (there are a few episodes that had the best animation direction).
The tie-in season movie, for a crossover to celebrate 15 years, LEFT ME SATISFIED. I was DEEPLY moved with the message of memories and OH THE BABIES!!!!! The animation was beautiful and the CGI was breathtaking. My gosh did I keep looking at the backgrounds and think “HOW DID THEY PULL THIS OFF WITH 55 FUCKING CURES INVOLVED?!”
It is without a doubt I fully enjoyed Hugtto! Precure for breaking boundaries, such as the positive messages, the heroism, FREAKING CURE INFINI, and Hana Nono in general.
You don’t have to tell me twice. GO CHECK THIS OUT FOR YOURSELF!
----------------------
Thus, only one more Precure season to go and I’ll finally catch up (until HealPre finishes). Join me in April for the FINAL PRECURE WATCH. We’re going to SPAAAAAAAAACE!!!
Takahashi returns for a third!? Let’s see if it exceeds my expectations, because Suite and Dokidoki were decent. Plus, I LOVE ASTROLOGY. Will Star Twinkle convince me enough to rank it to the stars?
Until next time, here’s hoping senpai notices you. KIRAYABA!!!!
