Pls tell me about velvet worms <3
A velvet worm is one of the only known cousins of the water bear (if you know what that is). It’s scientific name “onychophora” means hooked feet because like the water bear and its other family ancestor Hallugenia (that weird thing from the Cambrian period)
They only live in tropical areas around the globe because they they moisture to survive. They are predatory animals attack their prey and defend themselves with this glue type substance that is actually like a non Newtonian fluid. It comes out as a fluid but rapidly turns into a sticky mess once it hits something.
Velvet worms come in two main flavors Peripatos and Peripatidae which describe their physiology as well as their distribution.
Some species are known to be social like the Euperipatoides genus. All in all really pretty to stare at, actually hard to rear so they aren’t really in the pet trade fingers crossed 🤞 .
Their biggest threat is habitat loss, but some species manage to survive in urban gardens and areas.
Most of the info is from the top of my head, but here is a website with experts.

For @dadrunkwriting
Words: 498
Pairing: Pride x Hope (Solas x Felassan), Elvhenan AU
-:-:-
"The others believe you have lost yourself," said Hope behind him.
Solas tried not to sigh as he stares out at the ocean beneath this balcony. "The Empire has lost itself," he replied quietly.
"It's been a long time since I have heard that from you," said Hope. "Whatever the others say, I have not see you so...yourself, since the day you broke your chains on plains blackened by victory."
He leaned his back on the railing beside Solas and looked up at him, his long, black braid swinging over the side into the abyss. His violet eyes trailed up the length of Solas' body, from his hands clasped tightly, white with strain, on the railing, up to his pale and drawn face.
"Do not wear your masks for me, Solas," Hope said. "I see you beneath them. What you hide. What I love."
Solas's carefully serene expression wavered, and his many-colored eyes darkened with something like grief. But he resolutely did not look at Hope. "It is unwise of you to do so, and it is unwise of me to entertain such affection," Solas said, but his voice was as steady and dispassionate as if he had been reading from a script. "I am Pride, and you are Hope. It is not in my nature to think beyond the scope of my own abilities, and my limitations."
Hope scoffed, a disbelieving smile flickering onto his face. "Is that not exactly why you need Hope at your side?" he insisted. "Even if only from a purely practical perspective."
"I do not want to be purely practical with you, my Hope," Solas said, still without looking away from the waters below. His eyes swam with emotion as deep as the very same sea--depths that Hope had once known quite well. But now he found them inhospitable, and inscrutable.
He wanted to know why.
"Then why have you withdrawn, my friend?" Hope asked.
"Because I am afraid to need you," Solas admitted. "I am afraid to need you, and to use you, and to lose you."
His gaze at last strayed to Hope's face, and he offered the younger elf a sad smile. "Has the Pride of Elvhenan not destroyed so much already?"
"You know what I always say," Hope said, his voice quiet, but light. "We who have eternity have plenty of time to build something better than what we have today."
Solas inclined his head, his smile fading. "Without Hope, I will never see the ways forward," he said in agreement. "But I need you as a guide, my friend. Let that be enough, and protect yourself from my love. It will be better this way."
Hope, who was known for his eternal smile, frowned.
"Now that," he said, "is *against* my nature. I hope you will change your mind."
He touched Solas' elbow briefly, chastely. "But I am with you to the end, Solas. Lethallen."
"Ma serannas, 'ma'vhenan," Solas replied, and sighed again. "Ir abelas."
