HIGURASHI SOTSU EPISODE 14 THOUGHTS
Ok so, most people think that Sotsu sucks.
I...kinda agree for the most part. At the very least, it's nowhere near as good as the original Answer Arcs, in that we're just watching the same events from the POV of Satoko and the Infected without learning anything we didn't already know, and the stuff we do learn isn't that important to the story.
There are some things I like about it, like Mion's motivation, despite her arc being a rehash of Meakashi-hen, is different from Shion's, in that instead of taking revenge on people who (she believes) wronged her, she just wants to stop all the death and corruption in the village.
I also like the fact that Mina and Teppei have apparently learned from their past sins and are trying to be better people this time around, implying that Satoko's time looping is creating positive changes to the timeline as well as negative. They die, of course, but still.
There's the reveal that Keichi died in Tataridamashi-hen, and that it was Satoko, not Teppei, who attacked him, implying that Ooishi was not the only one infected with Hinamizawa Syndrome at that point.
There's Not-Featherine, or Eua, as she's taken to being called, being an absolute troll as usual.
And of course, there's Episode 14. The Confrontation. The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny.
It's stupid. And awesome. It's stupidly awesome.
But it could have been better. Here's how.
For the most part, Rika and Satoko's argument boils down to -
"I hate studying!"
"Study more!"
And I get why the dialogue is the way it is. It's showing that, once again, the girls are not communicating properly with each other. They're not listening to what the other is actually saying, and at this point they're both far too angry to do anything other than scream at each other and beat the shit out of one another.
However. there are some points that I wished they'd included that I think would make the fight more poignant:
- Rika can ask Satoko why she wants to stay in the village. Not why she wants Rika to stay, why she wants to stay. After all, why would she want to stay in a village that took her parents and brother away from her, that ostracized and scapegoated her for years, that watched her be abused and did nothing to stop it? What did she just conveniently forget all that?
Satoko can fire back that of course she didn't forget. She'll never forget. But unlike Rika, who just wants to sweep it all under the rug and pretend it doesn't exist, Satoko recognizes that there are good things in the village, things that made her life worthwhile. That made Rika's life worthwhile. And she's determined to make Rika remember that.
- Rika can then invoke And Then What? Say that Satoko succeeds, and she gets Rika to stay in Hinamizawa forever. What, does she think they're just gonna play club games for the rest of their lives? Their friends won't be students forever. Sooner or later they'll all be adults who will want to leave and live their own. Is Satoko gonna trap and torture them like she did her? And if not, then why her? What made her different from the others? Why were the others allowed to live outside the village but not her?
Satoko fires back that it's because she LOVES HER, YOU IDIOT! She doesn't care what happens to the others, as long as she has Rika.
(Or alternatively, Satoko could fire back that she could ask the same thing. Out of all the main cast, Satoko is the only one not happy with the happy ending. From her perspective, she's been given a bad hand. Her brother, her Nii-Nii, is still in a coma and may never wake up. Mion has graduated and Shion, her Nee-Nee, is nowhere to be found. Keichii and Rena are close to graduation themselves, and the club isn't the same as it was. Rika and Satoko's house was destroyed in a storm, the schoolhouse is being torn down. Pretty much everything that made Satoko happy is being taken away from her. And now Rika, the person she loves more than anyone in the world, even more than her own brother, is leaving her behind. She asks why, out of all of them, after everything she'd been through, is she the only one not allowed to be happy.)
And this makes Rika fight back even harder, makes her more resolved to kill Satoko. Because if that's her idea of love, than Rika doesn't want it. This confirms to her that the Satoko she knew and loved is well and truly dead, and if she wants her freedom, she'll have to take it by force.
And all the while, Eua is laughing her head off at all the drama.

higurashi gou spoilers, rambling
god I feel bad for Rika though
I can’t help but wonder if it was suicide for her too but also
She did think it was the same story-- type of world-- so of course she focused on Keiichi more, huh? at least as far as we saw
...but just like then, the worlds end up ever so slightly different... but just enough... to where the answer to what she knew, that could of helped in Onikakushi, didn’t work... because it wasn’t just Keiichi.
ough
also I wonder if these are all gonna be something-decieving? Demon-deceiving, cotton deceiving next... which. That’s taking the spot of Watanagshi, yeah? Which was Shion but... Keiichi perspective...
I can’t help but wonder too. Onidamashi ended up getting aspects from some of the other arcs too-- especially since Rena was also afflicted here... the hospital, that lady... ...what was with the clinic being renovated...?
and ALSO, that filter on the keichii and Rena fight-- did it really go down how it looked? The static, and all... it makes me wonder what else wasn’t right...
God though, I kept thinking ‘...that’s his paranoia imagining that, right? it has to be, right?’ but. no. it’s hard to explain away the actual injuries h ahaha god
man. mannnnnnn.

Higurashi Gou Ep. 5 Thoughts
Spoilers for both 2020 Higurashi, 2006 Higurashi, Higurashi Kai, and the manga. These spoilers will become more pronounced the more episodes I watch, You have been warned.
The start of a new arc! How exciting? I have to admit I thought it was interesting that they didn’t try with an opening murder scene this time. Definitely keeping us in the dark about this one. Still, I liked the set up with having Rena call Keichii, I can see how people who never watched the original would be extremely put off by that. Good job! I also like that so far all the arcs start the way a familiar one does but then changes, first slowly then by the end of the arc definitively, at least, that’s how I think this is going!
I have to admit it was a bit weird for Rika to be so obvious in her hints, it felt a bit game NPA like, rather than Rika’s acerbic comment in Kai that it would always be the same cause Keichii would give the doll to Rena. Not as good, but I can deal with it. They need to set up after all that the arc is different than the Cotton Drifting Arc of the original. Other than that really I have no complaints.
I like that both Keichii and Rena assume Shion and Mion are the same people in the beginning. As well as the reference to Rena being so outwardly perfect, so what does it mean when people usually defy your expectations? Just a little bit of the beginning of tension building. Speaking of which I actually really like where the episode ended this time. The definitive proof of how tight knit Hinamizawa is is super important to the show over on and it felt very glossed over in the original anime and manga, although that also could’ve been on purpose.
Ultimately I don’t like the original Cotton Drifting question arc as well as the answer arc (the fingernail scene better be in this anime) and it is only the first episode, so I don’t really have too many thoughts. The opening is growing on me I will say, although it still screams thriller more than horror to me. I also can’t wait to see how tf this arc is gonna end. So… yeah! Let’s see how this goes!

Ok so... I was at work and one of my coworkers took my phone. Safari was opened and the first thing he saw was Shingo being fucked by Keichii in front of a mirror.... He then said “do you read gay porn?” With the most horrified expression ever, and my answer was “So what?”. Guess what he did after that 😂😂
He asked you to send him suggestions for manga to read and to send him the link to read Kuroneko because he got hooked on the spot and was only horrified by the realization that he had lived his whole life without yaoi and didn’t know how sad it was before he saw that page? Yeah, thought so *nod nod*

Binge-Watching: Higurashi Day 1, Episode 1
Welcome to my binge watch of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, in which I binge through the show and post my thoughts as I go along! Today, to mark the start of my blog, I just watched the first episode, to give myself a taste of what’s in store. And if the first episode’s anything to go by, I’m in for quite an interesting time.
It seems like we’ve got five central character so far. Keichii, I think is how it’s spelled, is our POV, a city boy who recently moved into the country and feels a little out of place. It’ll take a bit to get everyone else’s names, but they all definitely left an impression. I’m a huge fan of group camaraderie when it’s done right, and Higurashi really sells how well these kids know each other. I especially like how comfortable they are taking the piss out of each other: too few anime really recognize that teenagers and kids are kind of naturally combative, even in a playful sense. Another strong benefit of this is that Keichii isn’t a completely milquetoast nothing of a main character, as he could have so easily been. He’s just as funny and sarcastic and, well, animated as everyone else. This is good, because when shit inevitably hits the fan later on, I am definitely gonna be more concerned for his well-being than if he were just, say, another Yuji Sakai.
The animation is particularly interesting, because on the one hand, it’s clear this show was really made on a budget. The character designs are weird and chunky and don’t always move fluidly. However, Higurashi is surprisingly adept at working within these limitations to maximize expressiveness. The comedy bits where the characters are bouncing off each other are all really strong, utilizing quick and exaggerated poses and motion to make up for the lackluster designs. I particularly liked that one moment where Rena goes all wiggly while talking about the “Kenta” doll buried in the trash heap. In addition, the use of simple, washed-out colors and shading for the backgrounds helps give the entire world an eerie, slightly off-balance atmosphere with minimal effort, a clear sign of a design team that knows how to work with what they’re given.
As for the plot, it’s still very much in the early set-up phase, so not too much of the mystery has revealed itself yet. However, I’m definitely intrigued to find out what happens next. Who was the man murdered during the dam construction? Why was he murdered? Why do the girls seem to be so unwilling to talk about him, or even acknowledge his existence? What does that weird camera guy know?
And most pressingly, what happens to turn this group of friends into a pile of corpses lying dead at Keichii’s terrified feet, as evidenced by the opening scene?
I don’t have any of the answers and I have no idea where we go from here , but I an definitely looking forward to finding out. See you all tomorrow, in which I hopefully watch more than one episode!

Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou – 08 – The Safest Place
Tumblr media
Suddenly, not long after talking to Keiichi, Rika is missing. The class calls her name around the school grounds. Keiichi prepares to search the outhouse, but Mion asks him to search the roof. Then Mion suddenly grows agitated, declaring she has to “put an end” to Oyashiro’s curse.
Mion calls out Rika, one of the heads of the Three Great Families, for coming to carry the curse out. She’s is shaking the ladder so much it seems likely Keiichi will fall and hurt himself or worse, but their teacher Chie snaps her out of her agitation and sends them both home for the day.
Tumblr media
It isn’t long before Mion invites Keiichi to her house, certain there’s something he has to say to her. Sure enough, he breaks down and confesses to entering the ritual tool storeroom. Mion already knows this, but now that he’s confessed, she feels she can trust him now, and asks him to trust her in turn as “the only one on his side.”
That’s because there are “some” in the village who believe anyone who disturbs that storeroom should be “punished”. She leads Kei deep into the bowels of Sonozaki family’s personal underground dungeon, torture chamber, and safe room, then locks Keichii in a cell…for his own protection.
Tumblr media
She tells him she loves him, which is why she wants him to be safe while she…takes care of business. If she doesn’t come back, she tells him to say it was she who took him prisoner and locked him up. But especially when he watches Mion pull a giant revolver out of a drawer before she leaves, he can’t and won’t stay put.
He manages to bust himself free from the cell door, and the security monitors show a team of suspicious people in construction jumpsuits amassing on Sonozaki property. The safe room door proves far tougher, and Kei ends up knocking himself out trying to force it. He briefly wakes up to find himself on a gurney, with Ooichi looking down on him.
After Kei is discharged from the hospital, Ooichi meets with him again to give him some rather extensive bad news. The detective dispenses with any sort of tact and even seems to cruelly relish delivering the report, even laughing about the mess: there was a well in the Sonozaki’s dungeon.
Tumblr media
At the bottom of the well were the bodies of Sonozaki Oryo, Kimiyoshi Kiiichiro, and Shion. Below them were the skeletal remains of at least three others. Rika was found in the septic tank of the outhouse Kei was going to check but didn’t because of Mion. As for Mion, she and Satoko were found in the Sonozaki mansion, dead from gunshot wounds to the head. Rena’s fate isn’t mentioned, but I assume she’s still alive.
Keiichi manages to survive thanks to Mion, with whom he finally came clean with his sins. But it was too late to save anyone else. The clues all point to Mion killing everyone involved in the rituals—including herself and her twin—in order to end the vicious cycle of Oyashiro’s curse.
Whether she ultimately succeeded, who can say. Kei is now all alone (aside from Rena), with a host of difficult questions that will probably never be answered. In any case, this is the end of the second arc. If we’re going by Rika’s final words, this “loop” ended in abject failure; another Bad Ending. Perhaps the third time will be the charm. Then again…perhaps not!

Taking Responsibility
(RP with @five-guns-days Doctor Who/Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Crossover)
The small apartment felt empty without his girlfriend...Ex-girlfriend. They weren’t allowed to be together anymore, the politics of the village disallowed a Sonozaki and a Houjou to be in a relationship like that after what Satoko’s parents did. Which is why he... Saburo didn’t want to remember it. He had paid for his foolishness and stupidity in full, in the hopes that Satoko would be unharmed if he took responsibility for what happened. Everything was back to normal, for the rest of the family. It wouldn’t be normal for Saburo for a while, as next in line as head of the Sonozaki family, he still had a few things to do as well as medical treatment. Saburo winced as the bandages made contact with the phone, recieving a text from Kasai. The wounds were still raw and agonizing, the bandages had to be kept on until they scabbed over in case of infection. He didn’t want the Doctor to know what had happened, the outcome wouldn’t be good if he did. Finally packing his remaining clothes into his yellow bag, he gingerly picked it up with his sore fingers before walking out the door, locking it with his key. It was a beautiful and hot day in the village, the sort of day that made him want to eat mochi ice cream and go exploring in the forest with Rika and Mion. The green-eyed teenager began walking, wearing more traditional attire, a light kimono and sandals since it was hot. He gave Mion a hug and said goodbye, the memories of last night coming back to him painfully.
“Saburo... You are one day going to be head of the Sonozaki family. We can end this now and forget about it if you do what is required.” His Grandmother said, sitting in her wheelchair as two men brought in a nasty looking contraption, Saburo eyeing it fearfully. “Do you know what this device does?” Mion asked her brother, Saburo looking at her, clearly frightened. “W-Why would I know what it is?” He replied, his breathing becoming faster and shallower. “It’s a device for ripping off fingernails. You must rip off all 10, 9 for each other member of our family. Then tenth is to take responsibility for Satoko Houjou.” Mion replied calmly, Saburo looking at her in horror.  “Mii-chan... Please... I’m sorry...” He replied, terrified at this revelation. “I know you are, but you must prove it and take responsibility for what you did.” Mion said, trying to keep her brother calm. “You’re not going to harm Satoko if I do this, right?” He asked, looking at the other members of the Sonozaki family, getting no answer before putting his arm down as Mion strapped it on, Saburo inserting his little finger, trying to control his shaking hands as he slammed his fist down on the lever and screamed in pain as it tore the nail off. “I...” He gasped, trying to control the pain through gritted teeth, inserting his ring finger next, hitting the lever again but only breaking the nail, screaming all the same. “I can’t... It hurts so much...” Saburo gasped through the pain as he was grabbed by two large men, a black hood placed over his head and he screamed as they finished what he had started. At some point, Saburo had passed out from the pain, awaking on the bed to find Mion bandaging the last finger, tying it securely. “I didn’t take responsibility, did I?” He asked her, Mion looking at him. “Grandmother believes you took responsbility, as do the rest of the family. It’s forgiven.” Mion replied, giving Saburo some codiene before letting him sleep.
Saburo nodded to Rena and her Father, wanting to avoid uncomfortable questions that he didn’t want to answer. Turlough said something about looking around Hinamizawa, but Saburo wanted to get back to the TARDIS, where he was safe. He avoided eye contact for the most part and quickened his pace a little, hoping he didn’t run into Keichii-kun or anyone he knew as he took the key from around the gold chain on his neck and opened the doors, stepping inside and immediately being greeted with cool air, enjoying the sensation as he saw the Doctor working on the console. “I’m back.” He said, putting his free hand in his pocket and holding onto the yellow bag holding his stuff tightly, hoping his bandaged fingers wouldn’t be noticed.
