I do think it’s smart how The Game Awards is a mix of award show and next-up showcase, both celebrating past and current work while hyping up what’s to come, and the pace keeps it fresh. But good god, they need to find a better balance by now. I do enjoy a good reel of trailers sometimes, but the event is getting bloated with them while the actual awards get shunted. Half the categories are just Geoff Keighly rapid-fire reading off nominations and awards with no room to celebrate them. It feels so uncaring and pointless, antithetical. No highlight reels or acceptance speeches, just a flurry of names so they can bring in more ads. Plus, acceptance speeches were noticeably given ridiculously short cut-off times this year. It’s an insult to everyone there and their hard work.

Cut back on the trailers, give the awards breathing room. Make it a mix, sure, but find the balance. Let the award show actually BE an award show.
