What if Ariana Dumbledore had never been attacked by the Muggle boys?
Interesting question.
The thing is, I really don't know.
Let's Take a Look at This
It's unclear if Ariana's was an underlying condition that was brought to the surface by this trauma. In other words, we don't know if it would have surfaced later or if it was purely because of the attack and the attack alone.
However, were it not for this incident, Dumbledore's father isn't imprisoned for attacking Muggles meaning that Kendra's not a single mother. More, Ariana's not having incidents/issues right at that moment, meaning that she may make it to Hogwarts or certainly won't be locked in the house by Kendra immediately.
In the spirit of the ask, we'll say that Ariana's health complications never flare up and she gets to go to Hogwarts. The Dumbledores remain a relatively stable household that now has a working father/isn't in as dire straits financially.
However, Gellert still moves in.
Dumbledore and Gellert
While the Muggle attack undoubtedly motivated Albus's sympathies when it came to Gellert's ideals I... don't know if they're the sole thing to blame. Albus Dumbledore is a wizard who grows up in the wizarding world, he doesn't have that much exposures to Muggles at that age, and from what it sounds like while his family wasn't Dark (with a capital D per Rowling) they weren't exactly Muggle lovers either (even before the incident).
Albus could still very well be convinced by the hot boy next door that what the Muggles need is to be made into a serf class that their enlightened wizarding facist bretheren will rule over. That is, if he doesn't believe as much himself already at that point.
So, I still see Albus being very into his intellectual hot foreign neighbor and that Abeforth still finds Gellert creepy and weird. However, without Ariana, there's not as much stress between the two and it may not come to a confrontation or a confrontation in the house.
If it doesn't... Albus probably bails on Doge and goes on a graduation trip with Gellert instead. And I imagine without the death of his sister, given his feelings for Gellert, a lack of exposure to Muggles or even really Muggle-borns as he hangs around with Gellert, Albus would do more and more doublethink to convince himself this serf plan is amazing.
Something might happen to make Albus wary or change his mind, but it very easily might not. This means that something else will have to defeat Grindelwald at some point (I imagine he and Albus are poisoned by a rival, as such is the way with the elder wand in possession, there's then a fight for succession). Whether this is before or after they've abolished the statute of secrecy and made Muggles serfs is anyone's guess.

The mother, Kendra, had jet black hair pulled into a high bun. Her face had a carved quality about it. Despite the high-necked silk gown she wore, Harry thought of Native Americans as he studied her dark eyes, high cheekbones and straight nose.
He learned them at our mother's knee. Secret and lies that's how we grew up."
This is what we know of Kendra Dumbledore... My headcanon is that she was quite a harsh mother, loved her children and raised them well, but strict and cold all the same. Remember a lot of children that grow up to be the kindest beings also grew up in the coldest darkest households.
We also know that his father killed three muggle boys in an act of vengeance. Cold blooded murder. And Kendra being a muggle born witch makes you wonder a bit. She probably hates her heritage a bit after muggles destroyed her family, her love and her children. She clearly struggled even more so now being a single parent. And then we know that she was killed by Ariana. We see in Fantastic beasts, Obscurials lash out when threatened or dare say triggered. Makes you wonder why she lashed out on Kendra that day. Who knows. Maybe Kendra had enough, and seeing Ariana's worsening condition and suffering, wanted to end it before it got beyond her control. She couldn't help her back then... but maybe she can help her now.
And I believe that Albus agreed with her to some extent, deep down. He tried everything to save her nothing can reverse the damage done by those muggles.
Whereas Aberforth isn't as realistic or pessimistic, doesn't see his sister as anything but his sister, thus being her favourite.
But what would their family dynamic be like if none of this happened? I see that in most fics they are depicted as happy... the parents in love, the siblings are very close and healthy relationships with there parents. But I don't think that would be the case at all.
Firstly, Albus would most definitely have been outcasted/disowned due to his preferences for men.
Everything we know about his parents would strong suggest this, and the evidence lies in Aberforth Dumbledore. His behaviour and response towards Albus and Gellert's 'closeness' that summer speaks volumes. This is learnt behaviour from parent to child. Albus learnt to keep secrets from a very young age, from his mother's knee.
Conclusion is if Albus dumbledore's family had lived without tragedy, tragedy would find him anyway, and the villainous potential this character has will forever be in my mind. Maybe I should write a grindeldore fic about this.

It just kills me sometimes how much stuff Harry and Albus have in common...  and not just the easy stuff. Like yeah, they both wear glasses, they both have bird companions, they were both in Gryffindor... but there’s even more than that!
Both Albus and Harry are half-bloods, and specifically half-bloods whose father is pureblood (Percival, James) and mother is Muggle-born (Kendra, Lily). Both Lily and Kendra were either directly or indirectly killed by their own children. Both men first showed romantic interest in foreigners (Gellert, Cho). Both of them have best friends that are underrated severely either by the narrative/canon or by the fandom (Elphias and Ron). And both of them ended up owning a Deathly Hallow for many years.
Personally I love exploring their possible connection/bonding through talking about their mothers, who had such a big influence on both their lives and in such different ways, but we’re not short on material. ^^

Fic Rec
Title: A Dream of Winter by Delphi ( A Dream of Winter - Delphi - Harry Potter - Rowling [Archive of Our Own] ) Why you like it: A fantastic oneshot with Kendra Dumbledore at its center. What I loved about this is that it takes the dubious canon description of "Her face had a carved quality about it. Harry thought of photos of Native Americans he’d seen" and plays it straight to give her a compelling backstory. HP Leading Lady: Kendra Dumbledore Theme: Mothers.
FIC REC!
Title and author: A Dream of Winter by Delphi
Summary: Three glimpses into the life of Kendra Dumbledore. (An interpretation of the ambiguous description of the character in Deathly Hallows.)
Leading ladies: Kendra Dumbledore
What's to love: Oh goodness, what can't you love about this fic? The backstory of Canadian, indigenous Kendra shines through. There's so many references to the lore of the Dumbledore family (a bumblebee!). It's a lovely look into a mother's life, which would fit into week 2, Mothers, but a fic like this would also be perfect for week 4, Background Beauties.
(as of the end of April, we're at the end of the fic recs, but if you've got more, send them in the fall when next year's themes are announced!)

I imagine Ariana was incredibly brave, but due to her early childhood trauma, never really got to prove this to herself. Instead, her magic turned against her in her refusal to ever use it again.
Or; The tragically overlooked story of a very underrated character.
Tumblr media
Obscurial; is the person whose body is a host for the obscurus.
Obscurus; an unstable, uncontrollable dark force that bursts out and attacks, and then vanishes.
The obscurus is created as a manifestation of a young witch or wizard’s repressed energy (magic).

I wish we knew more about Kendra and Albus' relationship.
I knew my brother, Potter. He learned secrecy at our mother's knee. Secrets and lies, that's how we grew up...
Although Aberforth doesn't exactly paint a healthy family picture, he does seem to think Albus and Kendra was somewhat close. (Even though his opinions are very biased and coloured with bitterness)
Kendra used secrets and lies to protect her family. While Aberforth resented this Albus embraced that philosophy until the end of his life.
Maybe they didn't exactly have a lovey dovey relationship ( I always imagine Percival was the more affectionate parent) but I think Albus respected her and her resilience in the face of tragedies.
Which brings us to the question how did her death affect Albus?
Passing of a parent who has strong presence usually leaves people lost, unsure. This would be heightened with the fact Albus was left in charge of his two siblings. His own future falling into ambiguiuty beside his new responsibilities.
How much of this grief played into Albus' relationship with Grindelwald?
I have always found it incredulous how quickly the Albus Gellert romance moved. (They have known each other for like a month and they made a pact conjoining their souls.)
Dumbledore's life was turned upside down at the beginning of that summer. And I think he desperately clung into their love, their dreams and to this wondrous boy who told him they could do anything they set their minds to.
Summer of of 1899 is so bittersweet cause it's a fever dream brimming with tragedy.

I’m still quite fascinated by the Dumbledore family tree in Credence’s room in Nurmengard...SO MANY questions even when we are familiar with their backstory in the book already...
The notes around Kendra D. would prob be explaining tht she’s killed by Ariana. “Muggles” written next to Percival is explaining the reason he got sent to Azkaban.
But, who is the “??????” next to Albus? Is it supposed to be Credence as Gellert said “your brother abandoned you” in CoG? So Gellert never figure out which Dumbledore Credence is related to? Or he expects Kendra to have a hidden child more than Aberforth does cause he (and Albus) totally ignored him during that summer? lmao
Also, why is there a two-way mirror connecting to Hog’s Head...
And why Albus can easily appear in Credence’s room in Nurmengard in the BTS...(Well, I guess that’s why they deleted it)

Wild theory about the origin of the Deluminator
So, I've already shared this theory on twitter, I'm not sure if anyone else already came up with this idea, but I'd like to discuss this further and love to gather some varying opinions, new ideas etc. I'm absolutely certain it's not free from faults in consistency, but hear me out...
What if Albus originally constructed the Deluminator back in his resourceful teenage years, after dealing with extensive research on the "Obscurus" matter, for the initial purpose of providing a mean for the family to handle Ariana whenever she suffered one of her unpredictable (Obscurus) seizures? To protect her and their surroundings by temporarily carrying her into this mirror world where she wouldn't be able to harm anyone, including herself.
Additionally, it could've been a mean to control the Obscurus power in general by establishing "light" in it's darkness and bringing Ariana back into "reality" safely and above all gently. This might also explain why he used this exact tool on Aurelius.
Another consideration for additional pain and depression: Albus might've unintentionally taken the Deluminator to Hogwarts this specific summer... Therefore it wasn't available when Kendra needed to use it to soothe Ariana and protect herself.

I know I’m probably going to get roasted for this but I suffered from parentification as a child and I think a lot of the blame for how Albus and Aberforths relationship turned out lies with Kendra. When Percival is sent to prison Albus, whose ten, becomes the de facto head of the family and a second parent to Aberforth and Ariana. Then Aberforth takes up a carers role for Ariana despite only being a child himself. Where’s their mum in all of this? Why isn’t she looking after all her kids instead of giving them roles in the family that they aren’t equipped for?
Then we get Albus having to be on charge of two children when Kendra dies despite only being a child himself. Like, who lets a 17 year old be a guardian of two kids?! How was he supposed to pay for things or be able to get a job?? Where was Wizarding Child Services?! I think their sibling relationship got lost along the way with Albus having to parent the other two and Aberforth pushing against that because Albus isn’t his parent but also wanting his brother to remain in that parent role and not leave the family.
I have mixed feelings about this. I agree about the siblings being too young of having a single chance to handle the situation they had to face. They were bound to be emotionally compromised and traumatized. They were bound to have to sacrifice their childhood.
While it's easy to blame parents and they are supposed to protect their children, I don't have enough context. We know for a fact that he Dumbledores had an aunt called Honoria, but we have no idea if she was still alive at the time. I don't think that based on canon Albus became a second parent to Aberforth and Ariana. Based on what we know Kendra was taking care of them, Aberdorth was helping her take care of Ariana and Albus was contributing more rarely, but it's not like she had abandoned them. Albus was given the space to focus on his studies and to leave after school. Aberforth too was at Hogwarts for most of the year and while he hated what happened on Ariana he was always happy to help his sister. It doesn't seem like she forced them when she was alive.
Kendra was raising three kids as a single mother under very problematic circumstances. Ariana's situation was one that they couldn't reveal because the ministry would have cared to put her down instead of helping her. Realistically, I don't think she had many choices. We don't even know if they were eating from ready money or if she also had to work. She couldn't bring someone in to help, because she would be risking their lives and Ariana's exposure. She also swallowed her pride and allowed people to slunder her and imply that she was a shrew who discriminated, imprisoned and abused her daughter for not having magic.
Then there are several other problems. Her death was an accident. She was still young and her death was not something she or anyone else had anticipated. Then, in the eyes of Wizarding Law, Albus was an adult. It didn't matter if at 17 people are still to young to take such a burden. So even if there were Wizarding Child Services (which we know little about), Albus was legal and he would probably not have chosen that for the same reasons that Kendra kept them isolated. Albus mentions that Kendra gave up her life to care for Ariana. Aberforth kinda blames her for raising them with secrets and lies because he thinks it affected them, but he still acknowledges that Kendra did everything she could.
My point is that I don't think that Kendra was a perfect mother, but I'd say she was dealt a terrible hand and did the best she could under the circumstances. The situation is so complicated that I can't bring myself to point fingers within the family.

kendra & anyone
she’d been busy restocking the selection of tea that her shop held, not hearing the bell she’d been working her little heart out. it wasn’t until the other approached that she looked up shocked, mentally cursing herself for not paying more attention. “oh my! i’m so sorry i didn’t here you come in.” kendra admitted, standing and dusting off her apron. “how can i help?”
