Does anyone know where this one Bangel fanfiction is? I first read it on the "Scribes of Angel" site, but every time I've looked for it there since I can never seem to find it.
It's an AU where Buffy didn't have to kill Angel to close Acathla. She just needed some of his blood.
So, I think she stabs him with Kendra's blessed sword and throws the sword in the portal, which closes it (this whole thing might somehow knock Angel out, but don't quote me on that part).
But Buffy still runs away to L.A., because, I mean, her mom still kicked her out of the house, she's still wanted for allegedly murdering Kendra... she still had to deal with all that Angelus stuff, and Angel thinks she had tried to kill him when she stabbed him (because she didn't have time to explain. Though eventually she does).
Angel ends up tracking Buffy to L.A., and the two of them end up living in crappy apartments together. It's of course not all rainbows and sunshine for them, though. Like, they have all the Angelus angst to deal with, for one thing. They think the curse is still a thing (though in this fic, Willow got rid of the loophole when she re-cursed Angel, but they don't know that for the longest time), and it's just hard being in close quarters with each other in general, in some ways: with him being a vampire and her a yummy smelling human/Slayer.
Buffy keeps taking awful daytime jobs to support them, but they don't stay any place for too long. (And there's one scene where Angel gets into an altercation with one of Buffy's bosses who had treated her like shit.)
Buffy's mom and the Scoobies basically think that Buffy succeeded in stopping Angelus from summoning Acathla, but that Willow wasn't successful in re-souling Angel and in revenge for her stopping his plans, he kidnapped her (something Buffy hadn't at all thought they'd think).
The Watcher's Council assassins get involved...
And there are probably other things I'm forgetting to mention that would explain this story more thoroughly, that would help you all better know what fic I'm talking about.
But it was a really amazing story, that I was happy to read the few times that I got to. And I would love to find it again, if anyone can help. Thank you so much :)
I also think this fic's rated "M," but don't quote me on that.
Edit: Yay! The awesome fic has been found by the dear Liam-Summers. Hooray!

A BUNCH OF MEMORIES : from march to april.
MARCH: the return of the flowers
Spring equinoxe : monday 20th march 2023.
Is it just me or March seems like a perfect month to reinvent yourself? The rainy days, at least the cold days, are over and Mister Sun is making its comeback. Flowers are blooming, you tend to not take your big coat anymore and you just feel a little bit more freer. At least, that’s what I think.
Here’s a recap of what makes me happy this month :
CINEMATIC UNIVERSE :
✧ the adaptation of Daisy Jones and The Six and especially Warren
✧ Rory Gilmore in her uni era
✧ Luke Danes
✧ The Whale
THIS MONTH SOUNDTRACK :
✧ Missing London - lostcrewboy (and for the fact, i was searching this song since my london trip in 2019)
✧ Why - Dominic Fike
✧ the SOUL playlist on Spotify (especially This Life by Kendra Morris)
✧ Liberta - Pep’s
✧ Many Times - Dijon
✧ the album Here comes everybody by Spacey Janes
BOOK I READ :
✧ Funny you should ask - Elissa Sussman
MEMORIES :
✧ seeing the Tap Factory show with my family
✧ seeing my mom happy
✧ being in peace with myself
✧ sushis
✧ spring
✧ naps
✧ celebrate the birthday of my friends
✧ potatoes
✧ eating at Don Camillo (which is a wonderful italian restaurant with the best pizza i’ve ever eat)
LAST BUT NOT LEAST : having my driver’s license (finally, thanks the universe)
A BUNCH OF MEMORIES : from march to may.
APRIL: my birthday month
"April is named after the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. The Romans called this month Aprilis, which may derive from the verb aperire meaning “to open”, referring to flowers and fruits opening."
April or the month I turned twenty (which is a pretty big thing for me). Twenty : a round number, a good number. Things turned out so great and I'm happy, truly happy. Flowers are blooming, we are living again.
CINEMATIC UNIVERSE :
✧ cars
✧ les trois mousquetaires
✧ watching Disney movies with my mom and my little brother
✧ All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
THIS MONTH SOUNDTRACK :
✧ letter to an old poet - boygenius
✧ "always an angel, never a god", not strong enough - boygenius
✧ WILLOW
✧ gracie abrams
MEMORIES :
✧ the surprise party my mom threw me
✧ the birthday gifs of my friends
✧ going at Disneyland Paris with all my family
✧ my Edgar allan poe candle
✧ my bracelets
✧ flowers
✧ the little chocolates my mom hid in my backpack
✧ the zoom calls with my favorite professor (we talked about books a lot)
✧ the idea of love
✧ the idea of peace
✧ studying at the Royal Holloway University of London next year
✧ going out with my friends and drinking red lights
thank you (for whoever is going to read my post about my little life).
and remember : you are loved.
all the love, Selma.

Hey so I’m asking this of a couple cool looking Buffy blogs because I just finished the show! I was wondering if you could tell me what you think about the ending? I’m having mega mixed feelings and I’m just looking to read some opinions about the finale and see how the fandom feels about it.
Hey! Sorry I just saw this! But I personally loved the finale. I thought that the whole episode felt really... idk big? And important? And like the stakes were really high? It almost felt like a movie. Which in general I think is really hard to pull off, and I think a lot of supernatural-y shows try to do that and it never really works. So I liked that aspect. I also liked how it brought it all back to the slayer always being alone - something we saw from the beginning of the series - that there is only ever one slayer, she is alone, she is young, and that was something that was done in part to be able to control the slayer more easily and so they could have enough power to beat back the demons but not enough to become a force on their own. And I loved how Buffy basically said 'screw that rule' and made all the potentials slayers, so that she wasn't alone anymore, the slayer wasn't alone, she could work together with others like her and they took the power for themselves. (Granted, Buffy did work together with her friends etc. whereas other slayers didn't, and there was her and Kendra and then her and Faith, but that's a whole other thing to discuss).
I loooved the ending of the episode - I mean it made me sad to see Sunnydale destroyed so I guess that was one of the parts I wasn't super happy about - but I think it did make it feel very big and final as well. But I love when Buffy looks behind her and sees the open road behind them - infinite. And the last few lines, and how it ends with 'what are we gonna do now?' and then she starts to smile, we see just the beginning of a smile, not a whole smile. And I love that. She's not the only slayer anymore, there are so many others. She doesn't have that immense burden on her anymore - of the whole world being on her shoulders and really hers alone. She can even work together with them and help them. She's been told since the beginning that she is alone - and she has to some degree always felt alone too because as much as her friends love her they'd never really 'get' it. And Kendra was short lived (unfortunately) and Faith wasn't exactly a model slayer so she couldn't connect with them too much - although she did really start to with Faith in the last season (not that she didn't in the third season, that just kinda felt negated a bit when Faith went 'evil' but again, a whole other discussion).
Anyways I love that image of her starting to smile at the end and all the hope it holds. And then other little things like I love Spike's role - although I'm always like 'if that light amulet thing started a few minutes earlier we could have avoided a lot of deaths...' but oh well I guess. I love Faith's role too and the 'hold the line' thing. And that moment that Buffy and Giles have when he says he thinks herp plan is bloody brilliant. Oh I also love the music in the episode, it helps it to feel cinematic . And that moment where Buffy says 'I want you to get out of my face' - and earlier in the episode when she has that little moment where she just says 'I just realized something... we're gonna win.' Or something like that. Like, she was trying and fighting and everything before - but she didn't think they'd actually win until that moment. And how it was the first evil throwing that whole 'one slayer in all the world, she alone...' in her face that she's heard so many times and it was that that made her think - why do I have to listen to that, why do I have to stick to that? I love that last moment of the scoobies in the hallway - and how bittersweet it is, because we can feel how they've grown apart. Oh! And 'Slayers, every one of us. Are you ready to be strong?' There are more moments I could mention but I'll stop now (willow moments, anya, etc. etc. etc.)
I could go on about this episode but I've already gone on for wayy too long and it's honestly been a bit since I've seen it. And I haven't even really mentioned how it fits into the rest of the season. I don't really know too much about how the fandom feels about it - I think people generally like it? Or at least did in the past but it feels more mixed now.
Those are just some of my thoughts on the episode and sorry for just rambling on there - but I'm happy to talk about it more! Also I'd love to know what you think of it!

Btvs for the ask thing!!
Haha! Thank you so much (I totally didn’t send this anon to myself ahahaha😳)
Blorbo (favorite character, character I think about most)
Tumblr media
Can’t go even a day without thinking about Dawnie, she literally is just so wonderful and adds so much to the show and I could go on about her forever. Her and I are literally the same (nonbinary (technically that’s a hc I have for her but I chose to believe it bc it makes so much sense), bisexual (also a hc but I’m right), some emotional stuff she has I relate to, and her best friend it basically Joyce (and my bsf is my mom💕). Anyway, dawnie 💕
Scrunkly (my “baby,” character that gives cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
Tumblr media
LOOK AT HER!!! Literally she needs to be protected and held (preferably by Willow). She deserved so so sooo much more. She’s just so..!/&;!/&’xk !!!!!!!! Can’t believe she’s happy and healthy and alive living her best scooby life 🥲
Scrimbo Bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
Tumblr media
KENDRA!!! Literally she should have been in more episodes and I’m kinda angry that she, one of the only black person on the show, was replaced by white ass faith (don’t get me wrong I love faith but I still think it was kinda shitty. Kendra should have gotten the same amount of screen time. Or at least more than 2 (?) episodes). I miss her sm :(
Glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
Tumblr media
Clem baby, don’t ever change💕 he’s the most average demon with the most unaverage skin. He’s “just some guy” but also so much more. I’m glad he left Sunnydale before it became a huge crater
Poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
Tumblr media
Im not sure if it is unpopular to have Glory as one of my faves but damn I love her so much. Literally the best villain, I love Drusilla but Glory is on a whole other level. She’s just so funny. Literally every scene with her is perfect. She’s also really familiar but so abnormal. Like, she’s someone you know but also someone unlike anybody you’ve ever met. She’s an enigma and an entertaining one at that. A true god
Horse Plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
Tumblr media
Literally I wouldn’t stop at torment, I’d go to full torture. Riley makes me so angry💕 imagine not being able to handle your girlfriend being stronger than you even though shes literally has supernatural powers. imagine your girlfriends mom has a tumor and you’re upset she’s not giving you attention. Imagine leaving her indefinitely while her mom is recovering from said brain tumor. Imagine coming back a year later and making it seem like y’all could get back together just for your wife to crash it. Literally he’s the worst (not the worst worst but I hate him sm, Buffy deserved so much better than him). I love Sam though!! She was so sweet
Eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)
Tumblr media
Words can’t describe how much I hate him. He deserved more torture than Willow gave him imo (I’m getting livid just thinking about him so that’s enough of warren thinking)

So, I know I mainly do reader inserts but I've shared my slash stuff in the past on this blog, and I wanted to share an idea I came up with when watching Buffy and Criminal Minds with a friend. There are some Major Spoilers for Criminal Minds here and some minor spoilers for Buffy. I'm only on season 2 right now, so this is all very early Buffy characters, nothing for later, but I will add to this when I get there. I hope you like it! And I'm not stopping with the reader inserts! I just had this idea and I had to discuss it with my friend who knows more about Buffy than me and write it down XD
Buffy: Trans Spencer Reid because like, a double subversion just like buffy herself. He lived in Las Vegas with his Mother, Diana Reid, since his father left them when he was a kid. He grew up with his Watcher, Jason Gideon, train him to be the slayer. Spencer goes to school at a normal pace because Gideon doesn't want him to be too far away from the vampire nest that's sprung up and won't go away in Las Vegas. Gideon treats him like a son until he starts getting bullied at school and comes out as a trans man, pulling away and ignoring him, using him like a weapon. After Gideon died in front of Spencer, he resolves to never become the slayer.
Willow: Penelope Garcia. Everyone loves her and she's definitely gay, and she's a whiz with computers. Her home life is nothing special. With two absent parents she practically raised herself with her best friend, Derek Morgan, there to watch over her. She finds out Vampires are real, that Spencer is the slayer, and that he's killed people, no- vampires before all in the same minute.
Xander: Derek Morgan. I love him, but he's also a TOTAL ladies man and doesn't always know the right thing to say. Grew up in a loving home with his mother and two sisters, but was sexually abused by the local football coach and no one believed him, causing a rift between him and his family. He grew up with Penelope, and while they flirt a lot, they never have any romantic feelings towards one another. He also finds out about Spencer with Penelope, hiding behind a bookcase in the library.
Merrick: Jason Gideon. Spencer's first water, he comes from the watchers council, a very conservative group of men taught to train the slayers as they arise. He pretended to love Spencer as a father to get the young boy to trust him, but as time goes on, he drops that facade and backs away, leaving Spencer practically alone. He died in front of Spencer without so much as a goodbye, blaming him for his death, almost permanently breaking Spencer.
Angel: Aaron Hotchner. That one's obvious. He's broody and doesn't get along with anyone but he has a good heart and soul, wanting to right the wrongs he may have committed in the past. He also doesn't want to enter into a relationship with Spencer, despite the pull they have to each other, because of how much older he is, and how much power he has over the boy, but when Spencer reveals he's the slayer, they're on the same playing field.
Giles: David Rossi. But like, a super rich Giles who publishes a lot of books for the watchers and for non-supernatural people. Also he's a such a good dad. He wants to understand Spencer, and will listen when he has problems, even if Spencer is hesitant to open up because of what happened with his previous watcher. He accepts that Spencer is trans and actually does a lot of research on it to help the boy open up more. When Spencer met him, he was conflicted because he wanted to fanboy about ahow he's read every single one of Rossi's books, supernatural or not, but he's also conflicted because his last watcher left him, just like his father, and he doesn't want that to happen again.
Kendra: Elle. People either love her or hate her and she leaves way too early. She's from Italy, having been taken by her watcher when she first showed the signs of being a slayer. She has a hard time interacting with people and more often than not rude and quick to anger because of it.
Joyce Summers: Diana Reid. She supports her son fully and even with her illness she never gets her son's name or pronouns wrong. She's back on medication and doing better than she previously was, but Spencer sometimes still has to take care of her if she has an unexpected episode, causing him to have to forgo his slayerage if his mom needs help. She doesn't know he's the slayer and thinks that him sneaking out (because let's be real, even with slayer powers, that boy has two left feet and would not be stealthy at all) to see friends that he now seems to have, a big step up from Vegas. She moved to Sunnydale for her son, because she would do anything to make him happy and comfortable with himself.
Principal Snyder: Erin Strauss. She's a huge hardass on all of them but Hotch and Spencer specifically. She doesn't know about Spencer until later when he starts destroying things at school, and she hates him. Having access to his records, he knows that Spencer is not his legal name, and knows that he's trans. While she never uses his Deadname, she does pay extra special attention to him, for all the wrong reasons. Also, she knows way more about the supernatural world than she lets on.
Cordelia: JJ, but it's another subversion. She's the gorgeous blonde haired popular girl and everyone thinks she's a bitch but she's actually really really nice if she trusts you. It's hard for her to trust however, so she's curt and rude at first when the Scoobies save her, and she's traumatized from being almost killed multiple times, but when she finds out what Spencer is and that the supernatural is real, she opens up and lets them in, dropping her tough girl facade, showing that she's one of the nicest people ever. It's all a defense mechanism, and she never wanted to be popular in the first place, she was just inducted into the group because she's always been gorgeous.
Oz: Kevin Lynch. He loves Penelope and gets along with her so well. He's also super nice and considerate and nerdy, and can't you see Kevin playing guitar in a band? Also, werewolf Kevin is an amazing concept that I think is a perfect contradiction to his normal behavior, just like with Oz's.
Edits:
MY FRIEND HAD THE AMAZING IDEA THAT HALEY IS DARLA AND I LOVE THAT! Like, Hotch comes to town because some big event is happening and he has to let the slayer know except, uh oh, he doesn't know who that is because the slayer is a girl and the only one who feels like they could be the slayer is a young teenaged boy named Spencer who's definitely not a girl. But he knows that Rossi is the Slayers watcher and Spencer hangs out a lot around him so he tells Spencer what's coming, and because of this big event, his ex, the one who sired him, Haley Brooks comes to town to terrorize him and bring upon this big event. I wanted Haley to still be the sire because how I imagined it was, Haley pretended to be in love with Hotch to get him to do what she wanted, but when she changed him, he realized what she was doing, the demon in him realized, and so he pretended not to, and just started hating her for it, and saw how she didn't love him, and used him.

Note
in intervals of 10, regina and melissa, gabriel and karma aaand reno and zoe?
*kenzo & izkiel
1. What is their relationship to each other?
They’re close
2. How did they first encounter each other? What did they first think about each other?
On the net, just followed each other and ended up talking, I’m not saying either thirst followed but I’m not saying they didn’t either
3. What is their relationship like now?
It’s a little complicated - Melissa is right out of a terrible relationship and wants closeness and they’ve flirted for years but neither her or Regina want to mess up what they have by blurring any lines and Melissa doesn’t want to treat Regina as just a rebound
4. What will their relationship be like in the future?
Friendly, more platonic
5. What traits does each person find endearing in the other?
Melissa thinks Regina is just cool and calming, Regina thinks Melissa is sweet and kind and has a cute laugh
6. Which traits does each person find annoying in the other?
Sometimes Regina’s coolness comes off as her being uncaring (she’s not), Melissa’s crude sense of humor doesn’t always land on Regina
7. How often do they see each other? How often do they talk to each other?
They end up living together and for a time Regina would barely let Melissa out of her sight, and even before they would chat daily over the internet
8. Could they live together easily? Why/why not?
Yeah, they enjoy each others’ company and they are easy to live with so there’s no issue.
9. How much physical contact would these characters have with each other?
They’re quite cuddly, Melissa likes hugs and sometimes a girl wants to be held when she’s crying y’know
10. What would they get for each other as birthday gifts?
Candles, skincare products, jewelry, sweets, makeup palettes and brushes for both of them, Melissa appreciates stuffed animals, Regina likes coffee and alcohol
--
11. What hobbies do they share, if any?
Meditation, Gabriel got Karma to try it and she has grown to like it
12. Do either of them have any hobbies or interests which annoy the other?
Sometimes when Karma’s in a bad mood she doesn’t want to hear about Jesus
13. Do any of their beliefs (religious, moral, or otherwise) differ? Do they conflict strongly?
Gabriel is very religious, Karma isn’t at all. She has done white-collar crime, he has robbed banks. They don’t really conflict.
14. Who is the better cook? Who is better at general household tasks?
Both are okay cooks and handle their own living spaces. Gabriel keeps his a bit cleaner though, he’s more used to it
15. Which of them is more adventurous? Is the other adventurous enough to go along with them?
They trust each other completely and tend to do everything together, but that mainly means they go clubbing together when they do. They’re not very adventurous outside of work
16. Would they go on holiday together, and where would they go?
They’d love to go to a beach and/or a city holiday.
17. When one is feeling down, how does the other respond?
Gabriel prays his own sad away, when Karma is feeling bad he just offers his company, a drink, some food, a TV show, a Bible verse if she asks. Most of the time just company is fine.
18. If one was in a difficult life situation, what would the other do for them?
They went through their worst times before they met, but they still stand by each other through whatever, Karma is always ready to hire a hitman if someone gets uppity with Gabe
19. Has one ever had to stop the other from making a very foolish decision? And did the other listen to them?
They haven’t done anything exceedingly stupit while they’ve known each other, but sometimes Gabriel keeps Karma from drinking too much
20. Has one ever strongly encouraged the other to make a big decision? Did they go through with it?
They conspired to take over Paradise together so they both kinda egged each other on to make that big decision.
--
21. How would one feel about the other being in love (with them or with someone else)?
Kenjiro is genuinely glad Izkiel has Lyssa, they’re a cute pair and they make each other so happy. Kenzo himself doesn’t really show his emotions on that front.
22. Are there any other people who are a part of both their lives, e.g. friends or family members they share?
Kendra is a friend to them both, they also know Marcy, Willow, Orion and Ivana, also Lyssa and probably Odin considering he works with Lyssa. Both are aware of Chanel.
23. How does each person feel about the other person’s family members and close friends? Do they get along with them?
Kenzo doesn’t really know anyone from Izkiel’s family, but he’s mentioned his sister and father to Izkiel so he at least knows Kenzo doesn’t have the best relationship with them. Also Izkiel is probably a lil concerned about Kenzo and Ipes.
24. Do either of them get jealous over relationships the other one has with friends/family/romantic partners/other people?
No jealousy, concern if anything. And Kenjiro suspects Izkiel gets a discount at Lyssa’s
25. Is either person jealous of the other’s wealth or possessions?
What wealth lol (no)
26. If the pair of them had to look after a young child or pet, what would happen?
A pet would be manageable for at least a little while, a child, never
27. How far would each go to protect the other?
With Kenjiro’s impulsiveness, he’d do very stupid things for Izkiel
28. Is there anyone else that each person would protect over the other, if they had to make a choice?
If Izkiel picked Lyssa over him, Kenzo wouldn’t mind at all
29. If one died, how would the other respond? What would happen to them afterwards?
I dunno what Izkiel did after Kenjiro kicked the bucket
30. How far would each person follow the other? Would they trust them enough to commit crime because the other asked them to?
Both operate under Ivana’s wrath so I guess that’s more of a hindrance than each other. But I do think with Kenzo’s mental/physical issues he’s more than once asked Izkiel to cover for him/lie so he wouldn’t get in trouble for skipping work as much
31. If one wronged the other badly, would the other forgive them easily?
If the other one was genuinely remorseful and it didn’t have any long-lasting consequenses, I think yes.

Let me explain… no, there is too much. Let me sum up.
Strap in kids, it’s Boom! Buffy issue #20 and the last issue we get this year. So long and fuck off, 2020.
Spoilers underneath the cut
Well. That was bracing.
In this issue we get the spotlight on the adult characters and their struggles - the status of Giles and Jenny’s relationship (on a break), Wesley Wyndam Price trying to convince Faith of her sacred duty and oh, that vampires are real, and a direct callback to Wesley’s standalone issue and the shadowy Watcher’s Council, and Anya, who finally reveals her true purpose of being in Sunnydale. Or does she?
Subplots involve Willow’s conversation and off-page deal with Evil! Xander, the status of Robin and Buffy’s relationship (ghosty ghost avoidance on Buffy’s part), and the unspoken elephant of broken trust in the room (everyone else).
There really is a lot going on - so I’m going to break it down by character, because that has always been a strong point in Jordie’s reimagining of the Buffyverse. Jordie writes about the characters and their motivations and their inner lives and not so much about the Plot (though she’s improved on that front).
Jenny
Clearly has seen and suffered a lot of Shit, but it isn’t delved into for trauma porn - and she’s had enough. She loves Giles, but she doesn’t want to be a part of whatever is unfolding, but she still has compassion for Evil! Xander and can see that his actions are not too far off from his human self’s desires, only twisted. Evil! Xander wants love and attention and now he has the power to force it  - but somehow is talked out of it by Willow. Jenny makes the choice to protect herself, even if it means walking away from Giles and their relationship.
Giles
When not in a Jenny-daze, Giles picks up an important clue from their last conversation and calls in the troops to discuss the matter of trust and truth. It’s a nice nod to the previous issue’s reunion with Willow and the rest of the Scoobies - Willow not being comfortable about the trust fall, even though she suggested it, and here, being evasive and lying to everyone about where she got her shiny new trinket. I also notice none of her adventures in gay witch cult utopia have been folded into the Jordie timeline yet, but I assume that will be a reveal for later. Giles trying to mediate the conversation-turned-argument is interesting because for a lot of the series, he’s been on the side of caution and covering up because of the Council’s indoctrination process.
Anya
This was the surprise of the issue for me and one of the high points - all those previous crumbs of Anya referring to herself as a demon witch, and then Giles saying she was a watcher too, and then mention of a past Watcher being friends/school mate of a demon, and somehow just appearing at the right possible time to solve problems/save the Scoobies while hiding in plain sight. Anya being the connection to the Watcher’s Council and her dealings with vampires, Wolfram and Hart, she’s the perfect agent of controlled chaos. The reveal of her being the demon figure helping out the previous Slayer Morgan (who I now think is the original character they were hyping up issues ago and all that talk about multiverses and such - she and Anya are most likely behind what happened in Hellmouth). A revenge demon working with a Slayer is just *chef’s kiss* because who wouldn’t want revenge if they’re a young teenage girl suddenly tasked to save the world and not have her own life?
Anya’s conversation with Willow about demons being morally grey and that souls don’t need to come into it (along with the Princess Bride reference -  “Anyone who tells you is a fool or selling you something”) is one of the themes running throughout the issue. Jenny hints at it with her compassion for Xander’s soulless self and his still very human desires and wants, and Anya’s team up with Morgan at the end. They don’t think what they’ve done (the Watcher killings) is bad because they’re giving the Slayers their normal lives back - Anya can open up portals to store her magic knickknacks, why wouldn’t she be able to open up new timelines to ‘save’ Slayers? It would fit into her revenge scheme against the Watcher’s Council too. It casts a different light on her previous actions - giving Buffy the stone to call Xander’s soul back for an unspoken fee later, but not money, showing up at the eleventh hour to lead the girls into battle during Hellmouth with her convenient stash of weapons, tricking Dru into setting Camazotz free to gain Buffy’s and Giles’s trust later...and she knows Giles’s full name, so you know stuff is going to go down.
Willow
Tangled web, Wills. And all the little lies - why didn’t she tell her best friend and everyone else that she got the new shiny gem from Anya? Who is she really protecting? Herself or/and Xander? Willow’s (un)trustworthiness and growing capabilities in magic are going to be Issues with the gang later, definitely. And a possible source of isolation, because everyone at that meeting is paired off and she’s alone - Buffy and Giles presenting the slayer/watcher bond, Kendra and Rose as girlfriends and protective of one another.
This is also an example of Anya being a subtle architect of chaos - she scolds Willow about good and evil being too simple of a concept and that Willow should be smarter than that, and suggests the possibility of doing the wrong thing (in Willow’s case, lying) for the right reason (saving Xander). This could also be a clue to the other Willows we’ve seen in previous issues - it could actually be original time line Willow just visiting multiverses to check on Xander and Buffy.
Wesley
is finally in Sunnydale and completely out of his element, not only as an Englishman in small town America, but as a watcher with an unruly lone wolf of a Slayer, who doesn’t even believe in the cause or that vampires are real. It’s hilarious. They provide the lighter side in the issue, and I look forward to what Jordie has planned for them, because right now they’re channeling Odd Couple energy and I’m here for it.
Also, Wesley brings up the English vs Irish rivalry and FINALLY, someone says it. There weren’t enough Spike and Angel fights about their places of origin.
If Wesley’s ideals are just the baby version of Giles’s loyalty to the Council, Faith is the pragmatic version of Buffy’s stressed but down for the cause Slayer.
Faith
Faith doesn’t really question why she suddenly can cause a bunch of messed up looking people dusty death, because vampires can’t possibly be real, but aliens, sure. It’s a refreshing and meta take on the whole lore - Faith even cheekily bringing up that vampires are clearly a metaphor for sex and she doesn’t have time for that.
Look at that, a skeptical but roll with the punches Bad Guys-because what else is she going to do- Faith. Not oversexualized but blunt and funny and upfront about what she really wants - which is a burger. A good update to the character. I do wonder if Jenny’s earlier line about ‘good Faith’ was purposeful because of this introduction to Faith, or just a regular line.
Buffy
After all she’s been through in the previous issues, Buffy takes more of a backseat in this issue, but that’s okay - there really was SO Much that Buffy and Robin’s continuing communication problem really wouldn’t fit as an A plotpoint.
Girl still has huge trust issues, and with Willow’s defensiveness and her own reluctance to really talk to Robin, that’s going to be a problem for later on.
Robin
Still juggling the responsibilities of being a regular guy, Buffy’s almost boyfriend, trainee Watcher, and son of presumed dead Slayer Nikki (though with what we’ve seen so far, Nikki might be alive in another multiverse), Robin is mostly the diplomat in this issue, giving everyone respectful space.
Rose and Kendra
Are cute and happy together and that’s all that needs to be said really. The only couple that’s figured out communication and presenting a united front in this issue, honestly. #goals
Morgan Palmer
Another WOC slayer! Can’t wait to see what she did/has plans for the Scoobies and Sunnydale.

Potential Post S2 Fic...
Right so my current WIP seems to be going alright, but someone asked is there’s going to be a sequel and I honestly hadn’t even considered it... until 4am the other day. Since then, I’ve written a 5,000 word outline of what the plot would be, with every twist and turn and everything in alarming detail.
Basically it’d be a Post-Becoming ‘What we did on our summer holiday’ type thing focused around recovery for each of the gang except Buffy, because she’s not fuckin there, and I’ve got some really interesting ideas that are getting steadily weirder.
It won’t be happy, it’s going to mess everyone up because I really want to write a story focusing on how they all coped after the whole Acathla and Angelus thing. Because let’s be honest, everyone was a mess and obviously they would be and I don't think it was properly addressed in canon. Now I’m by no means suggesting that what could be created will be any good, and it might be way off base but now that I’ve got the idea in my head, it won’t fucking leave. Let me give a brief overview of what the plan is in my head:
A massive angst fest with copious whump, guilt, and torment and all that jazz. I want the gang breaking down every thirty seconds because they don’t know what to do.
I want the Police launching a full scale investigation as to what the ever loving fuck happened that night. I want them starting a manhunt for Buffy, keeping tabs on all the Scoobies and just generally doing their fuckin jobs for once.
I want Willow blaming herself for Buffy running away because if she’d been able to do the spell the first time then maybe it wouldn’t have happened. I want her actually recovering from nearly dying and turning into a mother hen about the others. I want her making the guys take their meds, I want her planning things to do to make the idea of doing physio fun because if she focuses on how badly everyone is hurting then she'd literally become catatonic.
I want Xander utterly helpless as his friends struggle to heal from it all and falling into a manic depression. I want him turning that uselessness into learning to cook so he can make dinner for everyone. I want him doing night shifts at people’s houses to make sure they’re not alone, I want him trying to be the glue that holds everyone together through the tough times.
I want Giles to be going physically insane with finding Buffy while literally falling apart. I want him to be forced to accept what happened to him and I want him to actually look like he was fucking brutally tortured for like twelve hours by a one of the most evil vampires to plague the earth, because he was. I want him utterly unable to cope with it and being a complete state no matter what anyone does to try and help him. I want him to stay up all night trying to find Buffy and being prepared to do anything to get her back home safe even if he has to sell his soul to Satan. I want the guy to be a fuckin husk of the man he once was because his whole life fell apart in the space of like a month and a half and believe me, that shit breaks you.
Joyce needs to be a wreck, I want her to blame Giles for everything even though she knows it’s not his fault deep down. I want her to help Willow and Xander, and later Giles, in recovering and finding Buffy. I want her to understand the impact of her words and actions. I want to explore how she met that bitch Pat and how she dealt with Hank when he’d be all ‘I knew you couldn’t handle her’ and being a downright arsehole.
Giles teaching them how to patrol because there’s no fucking way he’s going to let them out without some training and preparation. He probably won’t let them out anyway but he knows he can’t stop them and he’s in no state to do anything himself.
I want the Watchers’ Council to get involved and run an investigation. I want them to be like ‘oh dear Rupert, it’s all gone terribly wrong’ because fucking Kendra died on top of this mess and now they need to find the next Slayer. Travers frothing at the mouth because everything seems to always go wrong on Giles’ watch and it’s not funny anymore.
Snyder being a nuisance because it’s funny and he’s convinced that these meddling kids are going to ruin his perfect structure and order.
There needs to be a hopeful ending not a happy one because that’s not how life works. I want them all to be hopeful that Buffy’s return will bring a sense of normalcy and balance back to their lives. They won’t ever recover from it, but eventually the pain becomes bearable and they can begin to move on.
Do you see why I want this? There’s so much potential to unpack there. I’ve been desperate to give my own interpretation of the between season events, but never had the balls to actually start it. Until now.
Is that something you'd be interested in reading? Because I may and or may not have started it and blasted 18K words out in two days... so it’s not something that won’t exist. If anyone has any ideas on stuff like the title or just wants to tell me to shut the fuck up and stop wasting people’s time, let me know.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 6
1. Favorite character of this season?
I absolutely love how they dedicated this season to Buffy's issues. She died. And was ripped out of heaven. She lost her mom and was suddenly forced into being the adult in the house. It's so much and she gets to break about it. Yes, she hurts the people around her, but honestly... it kind of figures? How is one supposed to adjust to what she is trying to adjust to? But over the season, the wake-up calls she gets – the asylum episode, Dawn's stealing, Willow's addiction and then the grand finale that makes her realize she wants to be in this world – it's so great, because it goes... slowly.
My biggest issue with most modern TV is that it's basically torture porn. The main character is put through impossibly traumatizing ordeals but is never even given the chance to cope, to try and deal with it. The issues are never addressed, only glossed over because actually dealing with them would require care and good writing and take time away from all the other drama going on! So characters are only traumatized for shock-value and then are immediately over it, even though it's unrealistic.
This season is a season of trauma. A season of bad coping mechanism, of pushing people away but still seeking someone where she can feel safe – Spike. She slowly has to relearn to open up and let them in, she has to learn to want to live again. And it's hard. And the show doesn't shy away from it, it doesn't shy away from her making the wrong choices, because... there is no one right choice that is obvious when dealing with the trauma she has faced.
2. Outstanding minor character (positive or negative)?
Negative. Jonathan. I just... I really truly hate that Jonathan is in the trio. Of all people, Jonathan. The one who gave Buffy her class-protector award with that heart-warming speech. Buffy was the one person who saved him, personally, when he wanted to commit suicide. Even after the Jonathan Superstar episode, Buffy was gentle and understanding with him. It just... for him, to turn supervillain like that was incredibly disappointing for me.
3. Favorite character dynamic?
I genuinely love the Tara-Dawn dynamic. Tara and Willow raised her for months while Buffy was dead. But the Giles-Anya dynamic is also so great – I'm very soft for the way Anya points out her hair is blonde in the finale like “Buffy is getting hugs for short hair. I too would like a hug”.
4. Favorite canon romantic ship?
Buffy and Spike... in the first half of the season. The way she found him to open up to, he was the only one she voluntarily told about having been in heaven. She finds a connection to him. The way he loves her – that he stayed, for months, even though she was dead, because he had promised her to take care of Dawn and he didn't just do that, he helped the Scoobies protect Sunnydale. He had no reason to and it still... it bothers me so much that everyone continuously belittles Spike's love for Buffy like it's not there. If he was only lusting after her, he would have ditched town after her death, he wouldn't have helped defend Sunnydale and take care of Dawn.
5. Least favorite canon romantic ship?
I'm having flashbacks here but it's a tie and it's because of shit decisions Xander and Willow made.
It's strange, I want to love Willow and – as a friend – she is a great character, but she's just... a shitty partner? She cheated on Oz for weeks or months with Xander and now she used magic to play with Tara's mind. That is so... violating and disturbing and that, after Tara found out and confronted her about it and pointed out how incredibly wrong that was, even more so with Tara's past, Willow just went and immediately did it again. And this isn't something you can blame the addiction for; this was just “I don't want my girlfriend mad at me so I'll erase her memories”. It's... just so bad.
The other being Xander and Anya, even though I love Xander and Anya together, but... the entire season was a steady build-up to “Xander REALLY doesn't wanna get married”, literally from the first episode on. He tried to hide the engagement as long as possible. Then he just... makes these disturbed faces every time someone brings up the married life. They had a whole sing and dance number about their doubts. It's just so very evidently clear that he doesn't want to get married, but he takes until the wedding itself to realize and just... leaves Anya at the altar and then thinks he can get her back? Genuinely thinks they could just go back to being in a relationship? But after leaving her at the altar acting like she owes him something – when he watches her and Spike have sex?
Sometimes, it feels like Xander and Willow really live to sabotage their own happiness.
6. Favorite episode?
Once More With Feeling – it's just one of the most outstanding episodes, really! The songs are so brilliant, the emotional arcs this episode for everyone – from the Spuffy to the per-marital issues between Anya and Xander to Tara and Giles' doubts. It's really brilliant. Many shows after have tried to make a musical episode happen and, with luck, they're fun or comic-relief, but... none have lived up to the standard set by this one.
7. Least favorite episode?
Oh, that's an easy one. 6x19 Seeing Red, where they made... Spike, at this point honestly, completely OoC by having him try to rape Buffy. That will never come off as anything but OoC, not after all that has happened between them. Yes, they are violent with each other – but that's a mutual thing, they hurt each other. This was... terrifying to watch as a teen and it hasn't stopped being upsetting and disturbing. And then they top the episode off with Tara being fridged.
I know fridging is technically the act of killing a female character for the sake of a male character's suffering, but... it's gay fridging? It's not even entirely a Bury Your Gay; Tara dies specifically for the pain and suffering of her lover. After everything Tara's been through in life and after everything Willow has put her through this season, they barely just rekindled... and she gets killed off.
8. Favorite Monster Of The Week?
Aesthetically and what he brought to the show? Sweet from Once More, With Feeling.
But I think that Stewart from Hell's Bells also really stood out. The fact that Anya's past came back to haunt her – because she was a demon for a century and she tortured people for a living. She doesn't even remember this guy whose life she ruined and he comes in to ruin her wedding. And in the end... he wasn't even the one to ruin it, the viewer gets one last moment of hope when it's revealed this was a fake-out, that he was not “Xander from the future” but a vengeful demon... but even without Stewart, the wedding didn't happen.
9. Least favorite Monster Of The Week?
Not too many monsters of the week going on, really. Probably Wig Lady from 6x12 Doublemeat Palace, because all the implications of cannibalism in that episode were really very disturbing.
10. Rate the overarching villain!
Brilliant. 10/10. Holds up so well.
Seriously, there is this... frustrating part where Xander's character just does not hold up at all because of the casual sexism and gross over-sexualization of his female friends. Which figures, because that's how a Nice Nerdy Guy was defined in the 90s (and, if you look at modern TV aimed at nerdy guys like The Big Bang Theory, still is). It's just a trope from TV and movies that for some reason really worked back then but nowadays when we look at sexism and the behavior of men toward women with different eyes, it is really appalling and upsetting.
In the case of the nerd trio, this worked out really well for the show, because it only makes them even more effective villains. They are ridiculous losers, total nerds who think they are owed womens' attention. Their schemes are literally straight out of comics but for the dumbest purposes – they make an invisibility ray so they can go into a women's only spa to spy on naked ladies. They create mind-control devices but for the purpose of enslaving women into their sex-puppets.
It is so gross, so ridiculous and inexplicably still somehow funny, because it's straight out of comics. Freeze-rays? Invisibility-rays? Self-destructing lairs? Jet-packs? It is not out of this world, this isn't how Buffy the Vampire Slayer operates, this is a show about monsters and demons and they're turning it into a whacky scifi show and it works.
Then there's the fact that they're just... three dumb losers? I mean, last season, Buffy literally slayed a god. Shows like to escalate. The Big Bads become bigger and badder each season, but... where do you go after you killed a god? Instead of trying to immediately one-up the villain factor, they did something incredibly brilliant. They took all the steps back.
The villains aren't the focus of this season. The focus of this season is what I answered in the first part of this post. Buffy's mental health and readjustment. You can't only focus on that though, you do need a villain and for that, an overarching villain of some loser nerd bois who fail the majority of time are perfect. They're nuisances that make Buffy's life marginally harder at times, but they're not an overall, serious, actual threat that may end the world.
And still they... got Tara killed. In such a... human manner. An angry man-child who hates women comes in with a gun and shoots her. And there's nothing the demon-slaying good guys can do about it. The bullet hits – not the target it was intended for – and takes an innocent life. Just like that, Warren manages what the hellish bad guys from previous seasons hadn't managed; he kills a Scoobie. Angelus killed Jenny, Drusilla killed Kendra, those were the only major deaths at the hands of villains that we had on this show so far and both were minor characters.
Bonus: Other thoughts?
Dawn was so draining this season; she got better in the last quarter of the season but the majority of it... The stealing, the behavior, the blaming Buffy for absolutely everything – Willow got addicted to magic, it's Buffy's fault, they have no money and Buffy has to go and work to earn money and it's Buffy's fault that she's not home, Buffy died to save Dawn and somehow it's Buffy's fault too because she left Dawn. Just... how can you possibly be this self-centered...? It's so exhausting, even more so in the season that has Buffy suffering the most and instead of being a supportive, helpful sister, Dawn acts like she's the victim of everything...
And I understand, Dawn has been through a lot too – losing her mother, losing Buffy, learning she isn't human but just a mass of energy – but there is a difference between suffering yourself and placing all the blame on other people and pretending that the world is against you, instead of tackling your own issues and problems yourself? And stealing from your friends, at that.
And no, being fifteen isn't an excuse for not seeing beyond yourself. Fifteen year olds are sure old enough to be self-aware... This “fifteen year olds only see themselves and only care about their own suffering and everybody else is to be blamed for how shit their life is” is just... another cringey Teen Girl Trope. Seriously, why did they just cram every single bad trope into this character...

"Here it comes. Rewind that. Let's see that again." -Spike, 2.06 Halloween
buffy season two imagery series: voyeurism, part 1 (part 2, part 3)
Tumblr media
[commentary below the cut]
It’s tricky to articulate what exactly this voyeurism imagery is doing in season two. Because I recognize that it’s a fundamentally “creepy” kind of visual language to use, and it can be hard not to feel like it’s simply being deployed against the female characters in a fetishistic way. After all, there are many voyeuristic shots of men looking at women in a covetous or malevolent way. Say, Spike’s lurking in School Hard or his amateur videography in Halloween. Or Angelus in Passion and Angel in Becoming. Or Eric taking pictures of women in Some Assembly Required, or Daryl watching Cordelia through the bleachers. It’s imagery that highlights the danger of men, but could also be read as simply appealing to men. Still, if that was all that the season was doing, there would not be so many shots of Buffy herself looking at things. Buffy in season two is equal parts the subject and the object of gazes. In Lie To Me, she watches Angel have a conversation with Drusilla. In I Only Have Eyes For You she watches people dance from the Bronze balcony, and later watches James and Grace dance through the music room window. In Killed By Death she walks through the hospital looking through windows and into other people’s rooms. In other episodes, she spies on villains as they commit misdeeds, and at the end of Becoming she stares at her friends from a distance as they wonder where she is.
In part, I think this motif exists for the same reason that it exists in season six. It’s about how fiction itself is fundamentally voyeuristic. When you consume fiction, you’re experiencing emotions by proxy, via characters who have no way to know what you’re doing. Art allows access private things, extreme things, unlikely things–things one would never get to witness in real life. To create or consume art means to invade the privacy of fictional people. And perhaps, by extension, to plumb one’s own private emotional depths.
There’s also this idea that you can’t experience emotions via fiction and also participate in those emotions. You can read a love story as many times as you like, but you’ll never be a participant in that love story. There is an insuperable distance between you and fictional events, by virtue of the fact that they are fictional. And this echoes the way that yearning for an ideal can make it impossible to live in reality. If you want life to be a story it will always disappoint you, because too much about life is outside of your control. Moreover, trying to control people like an author controls their characters would be completely unethical (see: Willow, the Trio, Ted, Angelus). It’s the idea that you can want something perfect until the earth falls into the sea, but the moment you try to have something perfect—“perfect happiness” perhaps—it will disappear. Because perfect only exists in the imagination.
So the season is about that tension. The tension between wanting and having, and observation and participation—especially when it comes to romance. And voyeurism highlights that tension by differentiating between the roles of observer and participant. But one of the things I like best about the voyeurism motif is that what it means to be an observer or participant is constantly changing. When Buffy watches Angel and Drusilla talk in Lie To Me, you become aware of how outside of Angel’s life she is. How little she really knows of him. It parallels the way that Ford watches vampire movies, but knows nothing of what it actually means to be one. When Kendra observes Buffy and Angel in What’s My Line, it’s a similar case of a character not knowing the full story of what they’re looking at. Whereas Angelus is the idea of weaponized voyeurism—the idea that it’s easy and sadistically fun to inflict pain when you don’t have to participate in that pain. The idea of observation not as a matter of lacking information, but of scary detachment. This is contrasted with Angel’s fear of participation (of “being someone”) in Becoming. His hidden observation of Buffy in Becoming highlights the way that he is on the outside her life, and life in general, instead of being someone who “helps”.
(So to connect to season six again, the Trio are voyeurs partly because they’re malevolent men like Angelus, but also because they’re nerds. They’re irresponsible and cheat at life, and watch Buffy do her thing instead of doing anything that matters themselves. They’re detached. Both in the Angelus sense of “not caring what happens to people”, and in the Angel sense of “not participating in life.” Which is what makes them such great dark mirror for the other characters that season, as Willow struggles with the consequences of manipulation and irresponsibility, or Buffy struggles to fully participate in her own life. This choice to have the Trio act as mirrors, instead of simply antagonists, is what makes season six an update on season two, instead of just a rehash. In season six, the protagonists run the risk of falling prey to the same flaws that were previously associated with villains, instead of just being victimized by them. And that’s the conflict of the season.)
Then the back half of season two is about Buffy being pushed to the outside of her life, but this time with full knowledge of what she’s losing. When Buffy watches James and Grace dance in I Only Have Eyes For You, she knows exactly what it’s like to be in love, and cannot have it (there is something to say about how Buffy and Angel get to literally participate in another person’s love story, and how this breaks the rules of the participation/observation divide the same way that Grace forgiving James breaks the rules of how their story always goes). By the end of Becoming, Buffy cannot even participate in the basics of her life: her family, her friendships, her education. She is forced into the role of the observer, to watch her friends from a distance like Angelus watched them in Passion. And in light of the entire season, we know exactly how tragic that is.

Hellmouth #5
Shut up, you're the best. ~ Buffy Summers
Epic, funny, emotional - this issue feels like a proper season finale!
Buffy faces the hellmother, just as unnecessarily talkative as ever. They trade blows but it's obvious that the big bad is just too powerful. She menages to get an upper hand and throws Buffy into the cave's wall, knocking her out. Suddenly a comically large ladle hits mom's head. Augie and Drusilla found the cavern. Furious mother grabs Buffy and rag dolls her into Dru and the little demon. She lifts Drusilla and unceremoniously throws her into the lake. Mother's minions quickly encircle Buffy and Augie. Your blood will be mine, girl. You'll live on in me, the big bad gloats, at least you won't be alone anymore--
Tumblr media
She was never alone. Get away from my friend, reverberates through the cave, followed by a booming Camazotz help slayer always. From above them Rose, Cordy, Anya, Kendra and Willow descend into hell on Camazotz's back. Armed. Cordy has a quarterstaff, Anya a bow, Rose a tomahawk, Kendra dual-wields sabres and Willow...Willow came with a fucking katana. It's so awesome! Buffy looks incredibly happy to see the gang, possibly aroused. She explains Angel's situation while Augie and Camazotz befriend each other when the big bat realizes that little demon fights big bad demon - well, Camazotz is not exactly an intellectual but his heart is in the right place! Willow figures she is able to separate Angel from the hellmother but she needs time. The Scoobies intend to give her as much time as she needs. Camazotz, with Augie on his back, tears through Ulfreth while the girls deal with the minions. Buffy takes Willow's katana and goes after the mother. The big bad pounces on her and breaks the sword, then, with a broken piece of weapon goes for the kill. Camazotz shields Buffy with his arm, and, after Augie's suggestion, fwoomps the demon with his wing. Meanwhile, Willow's found a way to expel the mother from Angel's body but she doesn't have enough mojo to grab onto her. Anya suggests to draw on the power of the hellmouth. That doesn't seem particularly sane but it works - with a magical oomph Angel and Mother are separated. This draws all of hellmother's attention to Willow. The witch tells everybody to get out, willing to sacrifice herself, but Buffy doesn't listen. She slams into the crone, sending them both falling into the lake. Camazotz takes off and catches Buffy, saving her once again. The mother plunges into the lake. Drusilla and Buffy (the other Buffy) emerge from the water, grab the mother and drag her into depths. It's over. Angel is not quite sure what happened and, despite some objections (Kill all vampires!) Scoobies decide to spare him and get back home. This is where Buffy notices that somebody is missing. Wait, where's Xander? Willow...? Where's Xander? Issue #12 is ambiguous about Xander's fate - it certainly shows Xander returning Willow's soul but it does not show his death which makes sense - what would even kill him? This issue, however, makes it patently clear that Xander is gone. Wow.
Tumblr media
Back in Sunnydale Buffy, Willow and Giles gather at the library. Giles feels extremely guilty. Buffy tells him to stop blaming himself and reassures that if anybody is responsible for what happened it is her. I couldn't protect you, and now we've lost one of our own, Giles weeps, we could have lost everything. Hearing this, Willow, who has watched the entire exchange silently, walks out of the library letting the door slam behind her. After all, Xander was Willow's everything. Buffy finds Willow near Xander's locker, looking at their photos, reminiscing. I can't stay here, she tells Buffy, it's too much. Willow reveals that she was accepted into a study abroad program. She's leaving Sunnydale. Buffy, you know that I love you, she says giving Buffy a photograph, but I need to do this on my own. It's sad to see Willow go but her choice is very human and very understandable. I think that, considering the situation, the decision to prioritize taking care of herself is ultimately an adult thing to do. Some time later Giles visits Anya's shop seeking information about the hellmouth. We learn that Anya is at least a thousand years old and that she used to be a watcher! After some friendly banter Anya produces a handful of floating, occult maps, each representing a different dimension with its own hellmouth and arranges them in a circle. She also reveals that the slayer that was activated before Buffy is alive! I wonder if BOOM! plan to bring back India or will they introduce a new character? This closing pages give us the first glimpse into one of the alternate realities. Sunnydale. Buffy works behind the bar at a light beers away establishment, hanging out with her childhood friend (possibly boyfriend?) Xander just before the closing. Outside of the bar they're attacked by a vampire - it's an exact copy of the opening scene from issue #1, but with a different couple and a different superheroine! Combat boots, leather jacket, red hair - it's Willow the vampire slayer!
Camazotz plushie when?

Happy International Women’s Day!
Despite identifying as a feminist since my teenage years, I’ve never actually cared about International Women’s Day. It was always just my grandma’s b-day! Today, however, I found myself wanting to celebrate it in some way. I can only imagine how many women in dozens of countries had to fight for years until this day was created for them, and for all women who came before and after them. I shamefully confess that I don’t know much about Women’s History (which I shall rectify!). I’m still finding out what being a feminist means, and how best to be one. It’s a very complex issue, with many perspectives to consider. So, I can’t write a post about feminism, not in the strictest sense. It would be ignorant of me. My opinions are both defined and vague, lacking in facts to support them.
Instead of adding something “substantial” to the feminist discussion, I want to talk a little bit about fictional women. Because this blog is primarily Buffyverse, I thought I’d share some thoughts on female characters in general, and how that relates to feminism, using Buffyverse women as examples.
We often talk about “strong” female characters. Sometimes we say “strong and complex”. But I believe every woman is strong; strength is hard to define, and I believe we are all as strong as we can be. People who are considered “weak” are often just people who don’t believe in something enough to fight for it, or are just struggling to survive. We are all strong; strength looks different in everyone. We don’t know what goes on in another person’s mind; what the circumstances and the reasoning behind their actions are; how their biology influences those actions. We don’t get to call someone “weak”. “Strong” people are often lucky enough to have achieved or overcome something that “weak” people were never given the chance to achieve or overcome in the first place.
But “strong” female characters aren’t just emotionally strong. Often, they are physically strong. They don’t cry much. They’re beautiful. Essentially, they are what society wants women to be. “Strong” means impossibly perfect, attractive, “badass”... It’s part of our mainstream feminism, this idea that “strong” women have to be successful in their careers, wear the perfect shade of lipstick, be the perfect combination of assertive and humble. In real life, women like Beyoncé or Ariana Grande are “strong” women; they’re successful, feminine, beautiful, and outspoken. And this is what us, women, want to be. It’s not enough to be strong, or beautiful, or successful. We need to have it all. Mainstream feminism is the kind of feminist that both men and women can stomach. It goes down easy. Who doesn’t like beautiful, successful women that don’t rock the boat? Capitalism  loves this feminism. It sells “women are the future” t-shirts made in sweatshops by underpaid women (woc, usually). Feminism in pop culture is about believing powerful, rich women are inherently more feminist than regular women because they rub elbows with rich, powerful men, in the capitalist men’s club. They made it! They are part of the problem now.
And how does this relate to the Buffyverse? Maybe it doesn’t. This is supposed to be a feminist post after all! But like many of you, I’m tired of “strong” female characters. It implies that not all women are strong, and leaves out the fact that “strong” usually means “hot”, “young”, and “badass”. Many Buffyverse female characters are “strong”. They’re young, gorgeous, badasses, who also happen to be emotionally resilient, assertive, passionate. I have nothing against beautiful women. But we can’t all be conventionally attractive. Women should be allowed to be ugly without feeling ugly, without being defined by our ugliness. Men have this privilege. We don’t. Let’s step away from this narrative of “strong” female characters and choose instead to talk about “complex” female characters, ie., women with full backstories, with tons of flaws and qualities, who don’t have to prove how strong they are because it’s assumed already. Unsurprisingly, most “strong” female characters aren’t all that complex.
The Buffyverse writers were always aware of their feminist credentials. They tried to write “strong” women who were also complex. To be honest, they mainly succeeded. Except “strong” women need to prove their strength. And so women in the Buffyverse are abused, humiliated, put through the wringer time and time again, to prove they are, indeed, strong. “Feminist” characters – strong female characters with important roles and lives outside of men – are created through an inherently sexist process. Men are always assumed to be strong. They don’t have to prove that they’re layered and that their lives don’t revolve around women. But female characters need to prove that they’re different from other female characters, that real women can look up to them.
Oh, how I long for ugly female characters! For women who don’t wear perfect makeup and clothing at all times! For women with ugly flaws, who are relatable nonetheless. If your character isn’t relatable in some way, then it’s not a good character! Us, human beings, share more similarities than differences. There’s always something that unites us. Why is it that “strong” female characters aren’t always relatable? Villains are often more relatable because they are allowed to be ugly on the inside. Villains are selfish, usually ambitious, manipulative. And so are we! We are all selfish. We all fail ourselves and others lots of times. Lilah Morgan will always be my favorite Buffyverse woman because she was allowed to be dark and ugly on the inside. She was selfish, intelligent, cruel. She didn’t live to please people. She was despicable and admirable. She was complex, and beautiful, and “strong”, but she was also a “bitch”. You know a female character is good when a man calls her a “bitch”. A “bitch” doesn’t care what men want or think. They’re dangerous to their egos.
I initially wanted to write a post to celebrate female characters. Buffy, Willow, Lilah, Faith, Kendra, Dawn, Fred, Anya, Tara, Cordelia, Anne, Jenny, Kate… even Justine, Eve, Harmony, etc. But these strong female characters were mainly written and created by men. And thus I couldn’t talk about how much I loved them without first mentioning how I wish they had been written differently...
I wished they hadn’t suffered so much. I wish they hadn’t been martyred. I wish they hadn’t been slut-shamed. I wish they’d been written by more women. I wish they’d been more diverse. I wish they’d had better endings. I wish I could see more of myself in them. I wish they could’ve been complex and engaging without having to be beautiful and “strong”. And I also wish Sarah Michelle Gellar hadn’t been forced to wear uncomfortable heels and clothing, even during challenging fight scenes, just because “strong” women are also conventionally feminine and stylish. I wish Joss Whedon hadn’t potentially taken advantage of what he called the “beautiful, needy, aggressive young women” on his set. I wish better for all women. I hope we can do better now.

Chapter 11 - Sunnydale Zoo
Tumblr media
Buffy Summers had dealt with a lot in Sunnydale; she defeated The Master, killed Angelus even though it broke her heart, blew up her high school to defeat the evil Mayor, merged with Willow and Xander to take down Adam, died defeating the goddess Glory, endured Willow’s vengeance as Dark Willow and finally destroyed the first while changing the slayer line forever. Sunnydale 2.0 had proved to be just as troublesome for Buffy but all the trouble in the world was worth it because she had got to be with her son Tristan once more and for once for the first time they actually got to be just mother and son, if only briefly, and that meant everything to the blonde haired slayer. However, she had found herself separated from the rest of the gang and walking out of a portal to find herself stood outside the main entrance of Sunnydale Zoo, not knowing what she would face next before she could find some kind of way to reunite with her loved ones. “Willow said you were in this alternate world too,” Angel greeted Buffy, as he appeared from out of the shadows and walked over to the slayer. “She said Tristan was here somewhere too.” “Yeah, he is! Or at least he was.” Buffy replied to the vampire who was the father to her son. “Where is Willow now?” “I have a theory she’s back in the normal world although that is me wishful thinking.” Angel explained to her. “Here’s hoping the fact it is just you and me here that it means everybody else is back in the real world.” “Yeah,” Buffy responded with a worried sigh. “I sure hope that is the case!” “We meet again Angelus,” Kendra announced in her Jamaican accent as she appeared from out of the shadows and began walking over to Buffy. “I hear in your world my life span was as short as most slayers if not shorter.” “You cannot believe how happy I am to see you again Kendra.” Buffy said with a genuine smile. “For me it is the first time meeting you,” Kendra replied to Buffy. “You stayed dead in my world, I was the only slayer in my world…well until I was killed and wound up wherever here is.” “I understand the shadow demon somehow lives within all slayers but what I do not understand is why he’s pulled you in here with us and not the Kendra we know.” Buffy wondered. “It is clear the shadow demon is messing with us all with these challenges I mean Willow had to take on a vampire Tara for crying out loud.” Angel informed the two slayers before turning his attention solely to Buffy. “I guess your challenge is to fight alongside Kendra and make sure she does not die this time around.” “Of course, I get sucked into some wacky hell dimension to be some pawn to some blonde girl’s guilt.” Kendra complained. “Well let us make this demon regret bringing me into the game!” “Question is…” Buffy replied to Angel. “What awaits us all inside this place…”
Kendra Young was from a different dimension to the one who died in the library of Sunnydale High at the hands or rather nails of the wicked vampire Drusilla and although she looked exactly like the Kendra from Buffy and Angel’s world she was different in many ways however, she had one fatale similarity as the other Kendra she too had died young and also at the hands of her dimension’s Drusilla the main difference being she was killed in Los Angeles and had never been to Sunnydale. As Kendra joined Buffy and Angel in walking through the front doors of Sunnydale Zoo, walking past the reception door and through another set of doors, the two slayers and the vampire with a soul quickly found themselves within a cross section of the zoo and who else but Drusilla stood in front of a cage with Darla stood by her side. “Oh yay! This is just too good…in every little world I always get to kill you repeatedly.” Drusilla told Kendra menacingly, all too eager to see her foe once more, and to get the opportunity to kill her once again. “This is my chance to finally end your existence!” Kendra replied to Drusilla, as she pulled out Mr. Pointy from her jacket pocket, Mr. Pointy being her infamous favorite wooden stake. “Are you really going to fight on the side of the slayers Angelus?” Darla asked Angel. “After all Buffy might be the mother of your second born but I am the mother of your first…” “You are not Connor’s mother you are just some weird other dimension version to the Darla of our world and if you’re all caught up I had no problem killing her the first time around.” Angel answered the blonde-haired vampire who in his world had sired him. “Oh well it was worth a shot to mention the little brat!” Darla laughed as she and Drusilla turned their faces into their vampire forms. “It is okay grandmother we will dine with their blood soon enough.” Drusilla promised her grandsire. “You are just as deluded in any world Drusilla so here is the quick catch up you have never been a match for me and you never will be no matter what dimension you come from!” Buffy threatened the raven-haired vampire. “Somebody a little huffy because Tristan prefers to call Dru mummy instead of Buffy.” Drusilla cackled at the blonde-haired slayer, mocking her. “Oh, I am going to double kill you for that one!” Buffy promised, as the two slayers and the male vampire charged towards the two female vampires, ready for one hell of a battle.
Angel quickly went head to head with his sire Darla who had proven to be a little bit more formidable than the Darla from his world, making the two vampires rather evenly matched, managing to get as much hits in as the other. While the two slayers Buffy and Kendra took on the deranged Drusilla, both of them trying to avoid her hypnotic ways as they continued their fight and just like Buffy predicted Drusilla quickly proved to be no match for her, let alone her with the addition of Kendra, as the two slayers quickly over powered Drusilla, with Kendra delivering the finale blow by launching Mr. Pointy into Drusilla’s chest and causing the raven haired vampire to turn to dust. “No!” Darla screamed, completely devastated by Drusilla’s death, which Angel quickly used to his advantage, as he pulled out a wooden stake from his jacket pocket and plunged it into Darla’s chest, causing the blonde haired vampire to turn to dust just seconds after Drusilla. “Thank you, Miss Summers, for helping me avenge my death!” Kendra thanked Buffy, before turning to look at Angel. “You too Angelus…Angel.” Before either Buffy or Angel could respond to the slayer, Kendra began to disappear slowly before completely vanishing from their sight. “Thank you too Kendra!” Buffy replied. “Thanks for being there when I could not…” With little time to contemplate the events that had just transpired, Buffy and Angel were quickly distracted by the sudden appearance of a blue portal which stood in front of them, urging them to go into it. “I guess this either means we are done, or we are on to the next level?” Angel guessed, as he and Buffy began walking towards the portal. “Surely the shadow demon will have got bored with us by now.” Buffy hoped, as she and Angel disappeared into the portal, neither knowing what awaited them.
