Review Time: Why She Left, Kenton Bartlett
So right off the bat, I want to say — this book gave me a headache. Not because I hated it, it was one of those headaches you have when you stop yourself from ugly crying. With about five chapters left on a Monday morning, I gritted my teeth, cursed myself for indulging my curiosity, and put off all work until I could finish the book.
Before I go into the actual review (which might just be ramblings on love and life, I apologise in advance), I want to summarise the experience of reading Why She Left as one that made me contemplate love, attachment patterns, relationships, loneliness and most of all, how to be comfortable with hurting and being hurt. That last one extends well beyond romantic relationships, but it’s such an undeniable condition of the human existence, and most people take to one easier than the other.
Why She Left is a semi-autobiography, which if you read a lot immediately brings to mind one shady book which claimed the same and fooled us all. The raw vulnerability and honesty Bartlett gives me hope this is not fabricated though.
The reason I loved the book was less because it made me muse about life and things, but more because of how we see the protagonist transform, and become a person he hoped he could be, but never conceived possible for himself. After Katie (who I’m still shocked made it to the cover honestly), he says something that we have all thought at some point in our lives, when we were at rock bottom ﹘  “If loving someone is going to cost this much, count me out. If the joy-to-suffering ratio of this frivolous pursuit were lottery odds, only dipsticks and delusionals would bite.”
In the end, without any real spoilers, I want to say, he wised up. Love, and the feeling of being seen, understood and wanted maybe despite or because of it, is worth that.
Young Kenton gave me some heavy fuckboy vibes, mostly with Lucy, but like I said, the character development was unexpected and seamless, even if disappointing because his dating exploits were still in Season 1 of theirs.
I did my own homework with this review. Put in some effort, as it were. Only because I was so personally moved by the writing.
First up, a list of all the quotes that hit me hardest, and briefly, why.
“You want to be someone who appreciates that these things happened at all, but you’re not this person. Not today. When you’re really down in it, nothing feels sadder than happiness in the past.”
As a person that tries hard to turn every negative feeling and experience into a learning (a nerd4lyf if you will), it's exhausting to try so hard to look at nostalgia as positive, to not drown in the longing to have it all back and instead be happy it happened at all. Someday, I will be that person, but not today and that’s okay.
“And because this isn’t your first rodeo, you also know there’s no Time Out when your heart starts hemorrhaging. As you’re bleeding out behind the scenes, all you can do is press on with business as usual and let the gash close when it’s good and ready. Life goes on – like everything else – because relationships don’t exist in a vacuum. They’re all mixed up, in a swirl, with the rest of it.”
Do I remember my first rodeo? The first time the rug was pulled out from under me and I had to go on as if it had never happened? I am a silent sufferer and workaholic, so this hit home.
“I want to be someone who bypasses the ‘facts of life’ and makes it through without injuring anyone.”
Any people-pleaser or empath will know this struggle. ‘Nuff said, I guess.
“As soon as her skin touches yours, a sea of emotion will crash down inside with everything you’ve avoided. The corners of your lips will drop like stones as a sadness you’ve never felt flushes through you. Touching this stranger will make you miss everyone you’ve ever held in your arms, and everyone you ever wanted to. You will remember every goodbye you’ve ever said and every farewell said to you. You will hear them like a choir of ghosts inside. It will feel like everyone you’ve ever lost was here again and then gone, again. You will want to tell the ones you hurt that you’re sorry, and the ones you loved that you love them still. You’ll want to tell them that you think about them all the time— even after everything.”
Just a heart-wrenchingly beautiful one that really took me to the regretful and empty place of loneliness and casual sex, even though I have only somewhat been there maybe once. This is Why She Left’s biggest strength. You could have some white picket fence fantasy of a life with a person you never doubted was The One, you could’ve met them at 5, 15, 35, but you can still feel the misery and anguish the protagonist lives through as if it were your own. It felt like an echo of all my other lives in alternate universes, who hadn’t been lucky enough to meet the person I did.
Loneliness is all-encompassing. And universal. I want to add a quote of my own. On my loneliest days, Goethe’s simple outburst towards the end of his days gets me through. It reminds me that in the end, we are all alone and we need to get comfortable with that.
“No one has ever properly understood me, I have never fully understood anyone; and no one understands anyone else.”
I also made a meme to lighten things up!
Tumblr media
Finally, I want to wrap up this review rant with an open letter to Kenton:
Dear Kenton,
I so enjoyed being a part of this journey with you. It made me laugh (the bizarre but dark dating montage inspired some snorts), it made me cry (I never thought the idea of BDSM could), and it made me reflect, above all else. My own stint with depression has me well-acquainted with the idea of looking at your life from the outside, and desperately willing yourself to feel something other than the indifference that holds you prisoner.
I was rooting for you the whole time. I hope you appreciate that baring your soul to a reader made them want you to find a love and happiness that lasts long after the last page of the book has been turned. In the end, when you describe Kaleigh’s quirks, I felt the kind of happiness you would feel at a friend who has finally met someone who makes them overflow with the simple and complex feelings that only love inspires. You took me on a journey starting with hope that you would be the one to send the “Hey, I’m busy” text for once, to pride when you managed to prove the Asshole Theory of Love wrong in the end.
Before you even told me to hug someone special after I read this and tell them how special they are, I had already done it. I had already taken stock of what a goddamn special thing I have in my life, and been so overwhelmed with how much I want to bottle up the feelings I have when I’m around him for a rainy day.
Thank you.
You can buy this book here. I don’t want to share an Amazon link because they are monsters and I don’t stand for that shit, but you can look for it on there too :)

Why She Left by Kenton Bartlett. 7.1/10
During Molly Kay’s era, I kept imagining a grown up couple even though I knew they were 9 year olds. It’s mainly because I knew a grownup was telling the entire story, so I had to retrack my mind. Then it got cute and then I got hit, because a crush moving away at that age happened to me too. Why is everyone moving at that age? Cmon parents.  The college phase was so college. I’ve seen similar things offered in these stories, but just have experienced different things for myself.
This made me think about the what if of all your crushes and loves being put into one room and who you’d end up with.
Who is this Jessie and where is HR?
There are thoughts of what the lover could have meant instead of what they actually did and I think that’s strange to be articulated into words. To personally decide what the other person might’ve been thinking isn’t something I’d write down into a possible fact. Also the part when an interpretation was made based on a rejection via email was crazy to me. Coming up with a complete past after that scenario pushed you to think of other details, but deeming that that thought was true.  After a certain part in college, everything starts feeling a bit like entitlement. It then shifts into low self worth.
I think it’s interesting to read from a male perspective about all this. I can see how it’s very introspective, but it feels like it’s still just a male perspective but one that is trying to be understanding of everything that occurs. But, also, girls and boys suck alike. Many people are bad at handling rejection or being come at or so on. People act negatively towards one another and people don’t get responses they want. It’s hard and hard to manage.
The consistent and constant amount of botched relationships and abusive girlfriends and so on and so forth and the inability to confront them to get them out of his life is something. I kinda want more authority in getting rid of them without the option of we can just be friends or I’m always here for you. Go big or go home. But, I do get the responsibility and the effect your actions can have on other people.
I can relate to a lot of the life philosophies, but manage my life much differently.
Memorable Quotes: “That’s what I think for a while, until I don’t think that anymore.“ “If someone wants the relationship to end–usually because of some psychological injury that hasn’t been addressed, and especially if that someone won’t examine (or can’t acknowledge) their damaging behavior due to some deeper wound–you have to let it end.”
Spoiler: [About a guy’s journey through life as he tackles on love, life, and himself. It chronologically tackles crushes he’s had from elementary school to relationships later on. Involves hookups, friends with benefits, many many good and bad dates, crossing and not crossing lines, BDSM, polygamy, infatuation, emotional abuse, insecurities, loneliness, online dating, sending notes, meeting people to forget isolation, how and how not to charm, understanding others, not understanding others, views on marriage and children, views on life’s meaninglessness, heartbreak, how to deal with it all, and so on.]

my Q and A with Kenton Bartlett of why she left
Tumblr media
Write a little bit about you like what genre of books you write and what you're up to.
I've never been good at introductions, but I wrote this book to connect with other people. My suspicion is that a lot of our experiences and emotions overlap, and whatever project I'm working on is an attempt at trying to find that midpoint. Outside of writing projects, I also work as a mental health counselor at an eating disorder clinic, which is a different way of pursuing the same goal. Congrats on the book now to the questions (Questions)
(LAURA8759) What made you want to write a book about love?
(Kenton)   I've always been a sucker for romance and it seemed like something I'd be able to explore for several years without losing interest. I had also gone through a bad breakup and was trying to cope.
(LAURA8759) Any books you're working on at the moment?
(Kenton)
I'm working on one about taking a pill that provides a sense of purpose, another about a personal experience with having an eating disorder, and a third possible project called 'Children's Stories for Confused Adults.' (LAURA8759) Do you have a favorite part of the story?
(Kenton)
There are a lot of painful sections, but what stands out the most is all the heartwarming moments, and stretches of life shared with people who I still have a tremendous amount of affection for. It's nice to remember the good times. (LAURA8759) What are your other hobbies when not writing a book?
(Kenton)   I'm obsessed with music and movies, and can't wait for the world to open up again for concerts. I'm also into parks, waterfalls, and catching up with friends. (LAURA8759) What genre of books do you like to read?
(Kenton)   I really like things that express complicated emotions and interior thoughts, and books that feel like they're talking directly to the reader. (LAURA8759) Does anything inspire you when writing a book?
(Kenton)   So many artists feel like personal friends, and they've improved the quality of my life in too many ways to count. When I'm looking for a pick-me-up, I geek out on interviews of musicians, filmmakers, and authors to remember how exciting it is to create things that resonate with others. (LAURA8759) Are you the type to outline your book before you write it?
(Kenton)
I try to outline, then end up drifting away as things unfold. (LAURA8759) Do you write your story on paper first before you type it out ?
(Kenton)   I jot notes down all the time when I'm out in the world, but I rely a little too much on the computer to type things out. My fingers move much faster on a keyboard, so it's a lot more efficient to convert thoughts to words that way. (LAURA8759) Who is your favorite author?
(Kenton)
I really love Iain S. Thomas for poems and emotional things, and I love Alain de Botton for practical insights on how to navigate life.
(LAURA8759) What inspired you to become a writer?
(Kenton)
I consider writing more of an emotional necessity than anything else, and I tend to have a compulsive need to undertake obsessive projects. Writing seems to satisfy both needs, so I keep doing it, but I'm not sure if that makes me a writer.
(LAURA8759) What was your favorite bòok or series as a child?
(Kenton)
I used to love Dinotopia and Anamorphs! (LAURA8759) Do you have a favorite book?
(Kenton)   It changes, but three books that I've read more than once are The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Course of Love, and How to be Happy: Not a Self-Help Book. Seriously. (LAURA8759)
Would you ever do a sequel to one of your books?
(Kenton)
The first book I did, The World Needs You: A Pep Talk, ended up being a three-part series, but they were mostly random thoughts and not a continuation of any plot. I would love to have the focus to sustain a single story from one book to the next, but my mind drifts, and I find new things to explore.
(LAURA8759) How did you come up with the idea for your book?
(Kenton)   I was trying to recover from a break up, and I was also trying to create a linear story, with a beginning, middle, and end. I started writing something loosely romantic that pulled from my own experience as a child. Without setting out to do so, it evolved into something a lot more personal than I was aiming for. (LAURA8759) Are there any changes you would make to your book or story?
(Kenton)   I wish I could have found a way to make it shorter, or for the plot to be more dynamic, but I end up being more interested in emotion, observation, and honesty, so plot is never a strong suit. After shaving off over a hundred pages, I couldn't find a way to make it any shorter without losing some of what I wanted it to be. (Final question)
(LAURA8759)
Current book your reading?
(Kenton)
Antkind by Charlie Kaufman. I love his mind! Any social media pages our very few readers can find you at and were they can buy your books Feel free to friend me on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/kentonbartlett) and check out these books on Lulu (http://bit.ly/LuluBooks) or Amazon (http://bit.ly/WhySheLeftAmazon)! Several friends and I also made a movie a while back, and if anyone is interested, it's available at http://www.FindYourMissingPieces.com.
