hi hazel!

do you think a drivers’ protest/strike repeat is inevitable? like it’s bound to happen again? sometimes i think they’re getting annoyed enough with certain things to consider it but then i think that if that jeddah 2022 race didn’t make it happen then what will.

i just think that an endless stream of crap situations has been occurring from red flag restarts that they didn’t agree with to stefano saying that a 1/3 of the calendar would be sprint races that none of them like or just the looming threat of a 27 race calendar or something.

there is nothing i’m more curious about than what they say in those drivers briefings sometimes.

the miami driver intros just prompted that thought (because a few were vocal about not liking that for various reasons), i know it’s not the same as the last time the drivers decided to lock themselves in and refuse to race but i just wonder lol.

i know they technically signed up for this but i don’t know, i still don’t think they signed up for this version of it.

sorry, that was a bit of word vomit there, it’s past 1am where i am.

I don't think it's inevitable but I think there are some current issues that could push them to. nothing as petty as driver introductions, where they'll just be vocally annoyed enough to discourage more of it being added but safety issues, certainly.

one that genuinely might see a walkout is sausage kerbs. Imola will be a test of this, I assume they'll all be removed before the grand prix weekend but if not then expect dramatic action from the drivers; although it's "only" been junior series where they've led to spinal injuries they obviously realise they are the ones with the power to threaten the FIA/FOM if things aren't changed.

in Saudi they basically did stage a walkout, that's what that meeting was. they were negotiated back from it with some pretty dirty threats that, unfortunately, do stand up; that the airspace would be closed so no one could leave (several drivers mentioned this) if they tried to.

there's a high chance (some of) the drivers could get themselves out but they'd be leaving their teams, so they decided to stay. there is a credible record of this because it's exactly what happened after the theatrically intercepted missile strike during the Formula E the previous year, which was when a lot of the drivers got stuck in the airport because they'd left Saudi (by going through customs) and had no re-entry visa.

so: they did walk out, they walked back in in solidarity with their teams, in that instance.

Thunder boomed as rain splattered the windscreen in a torrent. They were seven hours into their stakeout and lightning had begun to split the sky, cracking through the black, lighting up the clouds holding the storm and the interior of the BMW.

“That was close,” she said, turning to look at him with wide eyes.

“Yeah. I doubt he’s going to go anywhere in this. We could probably call it a night.” He glanced at the windows of the house they’d been watching. Its windows remained dark.

She started the car, the rumble of the engine barely audible over the pounding of the rain.

“You good to drive in this?” he asked.

“You good to let me drive you in this?” she rejoined, a slight bite in her voice.

“Yeah.”

She nodded and put the car in drive, pulling smoothly away from the kerb, windshield wipers slapping rhythmically. He watched her profile in the street lights. Lit and then shadowed, occasionally limned in blue from the frequent lightning strikes around them.

There were circles under her eyes, as though she hadn’t been sleeping. But she’d just returned from a vacation. He knew she’d gone to Spain with DCI Murphy. His sister, he’d overheard her telling Pat, lived in San Sebastian. “They’re very close and he wants to take me to meet her.”

He’d practically drowned in the beer and whiskey he’d drunk that night.

And the night she’d left.
