Last song: That I listened to, liked on Spotify, Googled or sang? BE SPECIFIC, MEME. To that end: I dunno, something from this playlist (it got a bit precious so I turned it off); "Early in the Morning", Peter, Paul and Mary; "The Ballad of Sally Anne", performed by Rhiannon Giddens; "Fairy Tale of New York", The Pogues, with Kirsty MacColl (RIP, Shane McGown; no you don't have to sing the slur).

Favorite colour: Blue, but a deep burgundy is always pleasing to the eye (and the palate).

Last movie watched: (WHERE? C'mon meme, you could plumb so much deeper with these Qs) at home, The Duellists (1977, Ridley Scott, dir.), which was a deliberate choice to wash the memory of trying to watch Ridley Scott's Napoleon from my brain (what an irredeemable, ahistorical, poorly cast, indifferently acted, turgidly-paced, self-indulgent, steaming pile of horseshit); in theatres, Argylle.

Currently watching: My computer screen.

Sweet, spicy or savoury: Savoury, which can also include spicy flavours (and often does). My three favourite flavours are peppermint, cinnamon, and the tears of my enemies.

That last one is a lie—I prefer a nice primativo or pinot noir.

Relationship status: Depends on the *type* of relationship, now doesn't it? XP

Last thing googled: "pinot noir or Pinot Noir" (on any given day, I retain only enough knowledge of the rules of capitalization to know that I should double-check the rules of capitalization when proofreading).

Current Obsession: Must I narrow it down to just one? In no particular order—fountain pens, FemShep from Mass Effect, werewolves, SHOGUN on Disney+ (may your knives chip and shatter), mastering the combat system in Kingdom Come: Deliverance (KCD dev team, you can eat my whole ass), Viking-era and medieval European swords, Willow (2022), ridiculously expensive Japanese paper, my friends, my niblings, and these overalls that I bought at Target.

Current/last read: The Hero and The Crown, Robin McKinley (1984).

Looking forward to: Finishing the piece of fiction I stared on August 2, 2023.

Do you use sarcasm a lot: My sense of humor tends more toward the absurd than the sarcastic, but I'm certainly not opposed.

Hi! Good morning. :) I just finished reading "Coffee and Faerie Cakes" on Kindle, and wanted to drop you a note on how much I enjoyed it. It was a perfectly lovely, sweet, charming, and warming story. Jeanne and Lucien were so alive, so adorable in their mutual growing affection. I loved Jeanne's food and drink filled with emotion--happiness, joy, love, to share with their customers and brighten their days. I enjoyed their relationship with Noe, and Lucien's with his friends. And the wisteria!

Messages like these make me so incredibly happy. It really means a lot to me you took the trouble to let me know you like my book! And you picked out my favourite details too :’)

I have pictures somewhere of Neil menacing academics on stage with a...I think it was a toy squirt gun? I think he was being a bank robber?

...so my Neil story is, at the aforementioned conference, I was - being a grad student - being the volunteer/unpaid labor, and running around Doing Things all day. And I kept running into Neil. Sometimes while working - like, if I was checking on a room set-up, and he came in, which happened a couple of times - and obviously when he did his talk and signing, but also just randomly so much. On an escalator. In the hotel coffee bar. Outside a restroom. In a hallway after a panel. Finally - this was after like...maybe the tenth time, and as I recall I was leaving a conference room as he was coming in and we encountered each other in the doorway...I did the nervous laugh thing (still a baby grad student!) and said something like, “We’ve got to stop meeting like this!” To which Neil said, “I think at this point we’re practically married!” and I just about fainted. And then other people walked in. And that is my Neil Gaiman story, which he probably doesn’t even remember, but I definitely do.

Well, I’m sure my brain looked delicious, with verbal skills/scientific reasoning off the charts. Sure the math score was terrible, but that was bad teaching. Unlike my high school, the military can teach math, but so could the community colleges and universities where I finally did learn enough to unlock the sciences.

The rest of my brain would have given them indigestion and made me utterly miserable to boot. Sure, the undiagnosed seasonal mood disorder might not have tanked my career if I was stationed somewhere sunny, but the migraines might have been disqualifying on their own.

I was just adamant that I wasn’t going to agree to wake up that fucking early in the morning, and that I wasn’t wired to follow orders in general. It helped that I saw an alternate path to where I wanted to go in life.
