Kevin//Fathers Intuition

“I’m gay.” The words that Kevin had spent years worrying over had finally been spoken. For years Kevin had wondered what would happen when he finally worked up the courage to tell his dad that he liked men instead of women. How would he tell him? When would the best time be to tell him? Would he be disappointed? Would he be happy? What if its the wrong time?

His father put his knife and fork down and looked at his son.

“I know.” He replied.

“What?” Kevin asked, now very confused. The nerves he had been feeling seconds before had disappeared.

“Kevin, I know you’re gay. I’ve known since you were about four.” He laughed a little. Kevin looked at his plate and pushed the peas around. “Its not a bad thing.” His dad reached across the table, stilling Kevin’s nervous movements. “You’re my son, I love you no matter what. Thats what being a parent means and if you love men instead of women thats completely normal.” He reassured him before going back to eat. “I’m still so proud of you.” He added and Kevin sent him a soft smile across the table.

“Thanks dad.” He mumbled.

“I’m a bit upset that I’m never gonna have grandchildren but you know...”

“Dad!”

“What?”

“You can still have children if you’re gay.”

“I know, it just wouldn’t really be the same would it?” He continued and Kevin groaned in annoyance. He pushed his chair away from the table and stood abruptly before storming to his room.

“This is what I was worried about!” He shouted behind him.

“Kevin!” His dad called after him. However, his answer came in the form of a bedroom door being slammed shut.

Kevin knew this would be a disappointment. He never should have listened to the damn LGBTQ+ group. “Come out”, they said. “It will be fine”, they said. They were wrong. It went exactly as he thought it would. He should have stayed in the closet, it was safe and warm and he was fine only his friends knowing.

“Kevin?” A knock at the door brought Kevin out of his thoughts and he grunted in response. “I brought dessert.” His dad opened the door slowly, the ice cream in the bowl being the first thing Kevin saw.

“What do you want dad?” Kevin sighed. His dad closed the door behind him before sitting beside him on the bed.

“I want to talk.”

“What about?” How the grandkids you’re not getting won’t be the same? Or how the wedding will be ‘a lot different’ from a straight one?”

“Neither.” His dad sighed. “I wanted to apologize.”

“Huh?”

“What have I told you about mumbling.” He scolded making Kevin roll his eyes.

“Dad.”

“Sorry.” He shook his head. “I did some googling and I want to learn more. Sandra on “myson’sgaywhatdoido.com” said that what you did was really brave and it was. I’m so proud of you. But this is new to me. You’ve had god knows how many years to get used to this and understand it. I’ve had five minutes. But I want to help. I want to understand and I want to learn. What I’m trying to say is I want to support you.”

“Dad.” Kevin cried.

“Come here.” His dad wrapped his arms around him and pulled him into a hug. “So tell me what I need to know. How does it work.”

“Dad.” He mumbled against his chest.

“Right. Never mind.” They both laughed.

“Have you had any boyfriends?”

“A few. They weren’t that serious though.” He shrugged. “There’s not a lot of gay boys in this town.”

“Cool.” He replied awkwardly. “So when’s pride? I heard there’s a pride month. That seems fun. Does that happen every year? What happens. Is it like Christmas? Do we decorate the house with rainbows? Is it like a national holiday?”

“I wish.” Kevin mumbled. “Pride month just celebrates everyone who’s part of the community.”

“Oh. Are there are lot?”

“Yep.” He nodded.

“Do you all meet during pride month?”

“No dad.” Kevin laughed.

“This was a good talk son.” His dad patted him on the back.

“It was, yeah.” He nodded. “Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“What are you doing?”

“Googling how to declare a national holiday.”
