I just noticed I have not uploaded this Currycano Zinger promotion from KFC Singapore before, so better late than never. The burger came with a Hot & Spicy Zinger fillet, cheese, sambal sauce, hash brown “cup” and oat bran buns with a tub of curry sauce on the side. You are supposed to pour the curry sauce into the hash cup to create a lava flow effect but I rather not as it will be too messy to eat.

🍔 The Quest for Burger Understanding 🥪
For many years, I have been alternately bothered and bemused by the fact that people from the United States call fried chicken burgers “fried chicken sandwiches”. Not just the act of the calling itself, but of what it implies. If a chicken burger is actually a chicken sandwich, in US English, does a “burger” necessitate ground beef or a ground beef-like substance shaped into patties? My intuition tells me that the defining aspect of a burger is the bun, followed closely by its oiliness in contrast to a “sandwich”. Since the implication of calling a chicken burger a “sandwich” conflicts with my mental model of what a burger is and what a sandwich is, this annoys me, and I have long sought a good argument of why a burger is not a sandwich.
Of course, a burger is in fact a sandwich in the sense that the word sandwich includes any food filling between two other flat-ish pieces of food, or a single folded roll. But in reality, if you were on a diet and your dietician asked what you ate for lunch, and you said “a chicken sandwich” but really you ate a KFC Zinger Stacker, I think most people would consider you a liar. The words “chicken sandwich” conjure different images, create a different understanding than the words “chicken burger”. So in this sense, it can be said that a burger is not a sandwich*.
Tumblr media
So if a burger is not a sandwich because the two words convey separate ideas, why is it that the dictionary definition of the word “sandwich” is so broad? Surely it should exclude burgers explicitly, as well as excluding other things such as hot dogs? Why is the response to the question “Is a burger a sandwich?” invariably “Technically, yes”?! How can it be technically true if in practice it is not?
In pursuit of this understanding, and simply because it is interesting to me, I have begun reading about semantics and semiotics. The extent of my semantics learning has been the wikipedia article on prototype theory, but this led me down another rabbit hole - semiotics. I’m beginning this quest for burger understanding by reading Semiotics for Beginners, an online resource which has also been turned into a textbook. I’ll be writing my thoughts down as I read it, with the quote from the site that inspired the thought as a reference. If you like, you can read along with me!
My ultimate goal: to formulate a short, convincing argument (with rebuttals to common objections) that explain why a burger is not a sandwich. Wish me luck!
*When I say “a burger is not a sandwich”, I think I mean “you cannot (or should not?) call a burger a sandwich”

Our government distributed another set of vouchers to all households to help with the rising cost of living. These vouchers are split into those for dining out and the ones for buying groceries. I used to donate them to charity; now that GST has increased by another 1% this year on top of a whopping 18% rise in water bills (IIRC another 7% next year), I gave them to my parents. This lessens their financial burden since they have retired.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At a time when many retirees around the world struggle with the cost of basic essentials, I feel thankful that my parents eat well. Making sure that they're comfortable means fewer cafe and restaurant visits. Dining out often is possible by avoiding overpriced artisanal dishes. Avocado toasts served at cafes average between $12 - $18 in Singapore, whereas in the photo below, black pepper stirfried chicken and vegetables, tomato and onion scrambled eggs and stirfried hairy gourd with rice cost me $4.50. Higher nutrition, more wallet-friendly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
If we crave fried chicken, local food stalls do a great job making them crispy on the outside and juicy, tender and flavourful on the inside. For $4.50, I got fried chicken, rice, stirfried cauliflower with fu pi (tofu skin) and stirfried green beans. Add iced local coffee at $1.60 and the total cost of my lunch was $6.10, whereas a KFC Zinger meal with a burger, fries and Coke is priced at $6.50. For many of us, dining out often nowadays involves making smart choices and focusing on nutrition instead of aesthetics. I do visit cafes and restaurants once or twice a week at most instead of a few times a week.

youtube
Fish, meat, poultry, eggs and tofu aside, I also love seafood; cuttlefish is high in protein, low in saturated fat and a rich source of vitamin B12. I choose it sometimes when I have yong tau foo (they're the light brown slices in the following photo). Because cuttlefish is mostly tasteless on its own, yong tau foo customers normally dip it in sauces. In order to reduce my salt intake, I dip everything in the light briny broth and have my noodles plain, without soy sauce or oil. This seafood, eaten in moderation, is a rich source of nutrients and I have it on rotation with other proteins.
Tumblr media
It wasn't long ago when I expressed horror as the death toll in Gaza reached 20,000; today, it has surged past 32,000. Survivors aren't faring any better - emaciated bodies, gaunt faces and haunted eyes tell a story of immense hardship and 1 by 1, they're dying. This genocide is the worst I've seen inflicted on an entire population and it's sickening that some hypocritical nations still supply Israel with weapons whilst trying to appear sympathetic to Palestinians' suffering. They have no right to dictate to other countries what human rights are; I'll never believe them again.

To coincide with Lunar New Year, KFC Singapore launched the Chicken Bak Kwa Burger and Chicken Bak Kwa Crunch. Available for a limited time from 24 January to 22 February 2024. The Chicken Bak Kwa Crunch featured Hot & Crispy Chicken coated with smokey Bak Kwa seasoning powder and and topped with Bak Kwa bits.
Tumblr media
youtube
I had the Chicken Bak Kwa Burger Meal (S$9.95) with the burger, Sweet Potato Fries and Sjor Mango Peach drink. Burger came in a bright red box for that “Huat” (prosperity) feeling. Without lifting up the top bun, this looks no different from the normal Zinger burger. The bak kwa bits are made from chicken and not the usual pork as our KFC is certified halal. The crispy Zinger fillet is coated with a smoky and savoury seasoning, giving the burger a peppery kick. But the chicken had been dry and tough ever since KFC reduced the thickness of the fillet. While the bak kwa bits tasted decent, they can’t compare to the authentic version made from pork. I find that KFC Singapore should just stick to doing fried chicken as their burgers are lackluster compared to their closest competitors. I used to love their juicy Zinger burger but cost cutting destroyed it making it dry and tough to swallow.

Kentucky Fried ChickenK apre un nuovo ristorante a Fiumicino
Tumblr media
