egyptian fashion ideas I've had
Velvet melaya leff
Gauze tob sebleh and aba / other translucent materials for showing off clothes underneath
Coptic slippers incorporating tapestry woven fabric either over the leather as a decorative layer or as an extension to create a boot
Sirwal worn high at the knee to show off patterned stockings
Some muesums and recreations of garments indicate either sleeves or body of Coptic tunics may have been scrunched or gathered when worn because of the proportions; modern Coptic garments based on that could have ruching, pin tucks, pleating, etc, along the shoulder and/or sleeves
Aqbiya abd sidari with gold embroidery like how Khedival dress uniforms have (as well as other fancy garments but that's the search term that will most easily pull up what I mean)
Aqbiya with capelets
Yeleks and ladies folkdresses with engageantes. I've actually seen a few old photos of women wearing dresses like that but we should do it more- you could play with tulle bi tell to see if it behaves well for this too
Broad collars made of embroidery and with dangling tassels and further decorated pieces of fabric at the end of the ties
Turbans with elaborate silk flower pins
Khuzam with enamel, mother of pearl inlays, pearls as the beads or dangly bits, and takfeet designs
Honestly takfeet jewelry in general
Elaborately embroidered binish and djubbeh coats
Djubbeh with really full cut skirts, kind like some 1830s coats
Using Coptic nymph scarves (the art motif is called velificatio, and is much more wide spread, possibly influencing the pibo)
Khayamiya style applique on galabeya, skirts, etc
Aqbiya, yeleks, caftans, sidari, etc with evil queen/1890s medici collars
Aqbiya and yekeks with butterfly sleeves, longer in the back than the front perhaps
Lace yeleks
Belts with long pennants like what antique ghawazi belts have
Folk dresses with watteau back pleats

Since deciding Serot spent some time in Baldur's Gate before BG3 and was sewing the khayamiya for his tent during that period, I need him and Astarion to bump into each other at some tailor's shop picking up thread

Unique And Diverse Things To Do In Cairo 2022
Tumblr media
Cairo is home to some of the most fascinating and diverse attractions in the world. From stunning historical sites to modern museums, there are a lot of Cairo attractions to see in this amazing city. If you're looking for any exciting Egypt vacation or Egypt day tours spot with plenty of activities to keep you busy, be sure to visit some of Cairo day tours!
Here are 20 unique and diverse things that you can do during your stay:
If you're interested in visiting the pyramids, there are a few things you should know. There are more than just the three famous Giza pyramids. In fact, there are dozens of pyramids scattered across Egypt. Some of them have been around for thousands of years. Among the most famous of them are the step pyramid and the pyramid of Teti at Saqqara, the bent pyramid of Sneferu, and the Red Pyramid at Dahshur. Other notable pyramids include the Abusir pyramids and the pyramid of Unas, as well as the Meidum pyramid at Beni Suef.
You can also explore several mastabas (which are tombs) belonging to royalty as well as commoners who lived during that time period. such as the tomb of nobles at Saqqara.
Cairo’s museums are a great way to learn about the history of Egypt, from the ancient Pharaonic era through to the modern day. So, you can visit them, including the Museum of Islamic Art, and the Coptic Museum Which houses many different pieces from Coptic art, including religious texts and documents, written on papyrus paper.
A visit to any of Cairo’s great mosques is an absolute must for anyone visiting this city. The most popular mosques include the Al-Azhar Mosque located near Bab Zuweila Street and the Al-Hussein Mosque, which are both built on the site of earlier mosques and have been expanded over the years. The oldest mosque in Cairo is the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As, which was built during the 7th century by the first Arab governor of Egypt. The Mosque of Ibn Tulun is another oldest mosque in Cairo. It can be found next to the famous Bab al-Futuh and along the entrance road to Al-Azhar Park. You can also visit the Mosque of Mohammed Ali located in the Citadel or Al Hakim be Aamir Allah which is one of the most important historical sites in Cairo and is visited by thousands of people every year. Other mosques worth visiting include El-Rifa’i Mosque, Aqsunqur Mosque, and many more!
Attend an opera or ballet performance at Cairo Opera House—it's a great way to spend an evening out in the town!
Walk through the streets of Downtown Cairo and admire their historical buildings and Palaces such as the House of Suhaymi, Abdeen Palace, Manastrly Palace, and Prince Taz palace. Those are beautiful buildings with a rich history and amazing architecture, and definitely worth a visit.
You can visit the Monastery of Saint Simeon Stylites or the Monastery of St. Anthony in Fayoum. These two monasteries are located on either end of Cairo and provide great opportunities for sightseeing outside of your normal routine (and maybe even some meditation).
Go shopping at Khan el-Kalili bazaar or another one of Cairo’s markets such as Souk al-Khayamiya or Souk al-Ghuriya where you can buy antiques and souvenirs such as perfume bottles made from Egyptian glassware.
Enjoy a traditional Arabic coffee at Al Feshawy Coffee in Khan El Khalili bazaar in downtown Cairo.
Spend time at Tahrir Square - You'll have an amazing view of this square while watching talented performers perform their amazing tricks on top of buildings or even on top of each other!
You could visit one or all of these places—or just pick one and go!

Working with local artisans across Africa and the Middle East in a variety of mediums, French multidisciplinary artist and designer Louis Barthélemy @louisbarthelemy creates contemporary artworks and artefacts based on centuries-old techniques, driven by his commitment to conserving and supporting vernacular handicrafts threatened by globalization. Inspired by the mystical universe of Senegalese wrestling which Barthélemy immersed himself during a trip to #Dakar, his latest series of appliquéd tapestries, “Wrestlers”, evocatively encapsulates the anthropological-informed approach of his practice as well as reflects the diverse influences behind his work. Made with “bazin”, a type of cotton brocade popular in West Africa, the quilt-like tapestries were handcrafted in Cairo in collaboration with Egyptian artisans who practice “khayamiya”, a type of decorative appliqué technique historically used to decorate tents across the Middle East. On view at Théodore Monod Museum of African Art in Dakar until January 20, 2022. Photography © Louis Barthélemy. . . Featured: From the series Lutteurs/Wrestlers. Khayamiya
Khayamiya are Egyptian textile hangings made with appliqué and quilting. The art form itself is said to be centuries old, and the techniques are largely unchanged and very impressive, with artisans being able to sew at a stitch a second, and some doing parts of the sewing with their eyes closed. Though usually hung on the insides of tents, some use them as blankets or even table cloths today.
(ID: ten quilted squares in many colors, mostly done with "Arabesque" and knotwork motifs in a radial design. 3 of the hangings include lotus motifs as well. The most common colors are blue, red, and green on a black or white base fabric. End ID)

Harry Gruyaert (Belgian photographer, born in Antwerp in 1941), Cairo, Egypt, 1987. The beautiful red textile featured here is called khayamiya (derived from the Arabic word khayma خيمة meaning tent in Arabic, khiyam and khayam -depending on the dialect- خيام for plural). It’s the quintessential Egyptian art of tent-making and sadly an endangered art form (with only 20 more or less of artisan tentmakers).
