"Bring in the flamethrowers!"

The above moment from The Clone Wars gets brought up a lot to illustrate Ki-Adi Mundi or the Jedi's moral decadence, a fall from grace caused by the war.

Figured I'd point out a couple of things in support of Ki-Adi!

1) Simple answer: the situation called for it.

The Geonosians attacking Ki-Adi were:

enemy fighters

with the element of surprise

who could fly and were thus harder to hit with the clones' blasters, hence why more wide-ranging weapons like flamethrowers were called for, as the clones were getting picked off one-by-one.

Time was of the essence, men were dying, Ki-Adi made a choice.

Wanna know what Jedi choose when a Geonosian isn't actively trying to kill them? They save its life (and get praised for it by their peers).

2) In-universe, the Geonosians are assholes.

From Attack of the Clones - The Illustrated Companion, 2002:

"Geonosians are a physically intimidating race conditioned to live and work in caste-segregated hives. The vast majority of Geonosians are subservient to the ruling caste, and throughout Geonosian society, there is evidence of a biologically engineered class system. Some Geonosians have wings, while drones do not. [...] The blind obedience of menial Geonosians makes them an easily exploitable workforce for the upper classes, who have built a highly profitable business manufacturing Battle Droids, Super Battle Droids, and Droideka Droids for the Trade Federation and its allies."

"For unusually intelligent Geonosians unlucky enough to be born into the lower castes, participating in the games provides the only chance they will ever get to escape the misery of their downtrodden lifestyles and the rigid social expectations of the upper classes. Triumph in the arena is often a hollow victory, however; while lower- and middle-class Geonosians may win the right to talk to their superiors, they can never earn their respect."

Okay, so the winged upper class are obviously elitist bastards, but how is that even remotely relevant--

-- oh. But hey, two of them don't have wings! Those are members of the drone caste, and they're all begotten underdogs, so--

"If there is one thing that unites Geonosians of all classes, it is their xenophobia. A traditionally isolationist species, they fear espionage attempts by rivals eager to learn the secrets behind their latest droids."

-- oh. Huh.

Bottom line: yes, they're sentient... but they're xenophobic, have an elitist caste system, and earn their living by forging weapons that melt your insides or blow up planets.

Now sure, this notion has been explored and deconstructed in Star Wars: Rebels...

... and I'm not entirely sure if the quoted info still holds true in current Disney canon (the lore is from 2002, after all), but if you ask me?

On a normal day, ol' Klik-Klak would be actively trying to murder the entirety of the Ghost crew for daring to even step their dirty non-Geonosian feet on his pure red planet.

3) Out-of-universe, the Geonosians are just "bug aliens". Nothing more.

The production team of Attack of the Clones referred to them as the "termite people". The script describes them as "winged creatures" who are heard "chuckling" once Anakin and Padmé are sentenced to a gruesome death. At some point, the storyboard artists considered introducing the Geonosian workers like you would a horror monster.

Hell, the whole Lucas decided to base them on termites is because his house was besieged by them.

They're not people, which is why they're not designed to look like people. They're purposefully dehumanized so that when one of them gets killed by our heroes, it's ethically "okay" and the audience doesn't need to stop and think "oh my God, that's murder!" or "hey! that's racist" whenever a clone calls one of them a "bug."

A similar logic is applied to the stormtroopers, who have face-covering helmets that dehumanizes them.

Functionally, a stormtrooper is a fascist goon, nothing more.

Same goes for the Geonosian. It's a bug alien, that's about it.

4) The flamethrowers were probably just added because they're cool.

Dave Filoni described how the decision to add flamethrowers came up, and it doesn't sound like George had deeper storytelling motives:

"You know, we're going through the tunnel with the Geonosians and George is like: “Yeah, well, here, we'll have the-- the tunnel and the flamethrowers. Yeah. How about that? ‘Bring in the flamethrowers!’ have Ki-Adi Mundi say ‘bring in the flame throwers!’” And it's like “flame—- What? Flamethrowers?!”" - Dave Filoni, “Return to Geonosis” Featurette, 2010

It sounds like he came up with it on the spot.

The flamethrowers aren't indicative of "the moral degradation of Ki-Adi and the Jedi Order." They're likely just in there 'cause they're cool (and if you've played Team Fortress 2, you know that's true)!

At the end of the day, when it comes to the Geonosians, I think that there's a certain irony to how their story ends.

They gleefully created the battle droids that tore the galaxy asunder and the Death Star, a weapon that enables the Empire to commit genocide... but fell victim to genocide themselves, at the hands of an even bigger monster.

They reaped what they sowed. They're not meant to be mourned.

And it's nice to see this aspect of the narrative doesn't get ignored as much as I would've expected.

I came across this video that basically rips into Ki-Adi for using flamethrowers, and I was ready to roll my eyes when I scrolled down to the comments section...

... but then, a happy surprise!

Most of the comments disagree with the video's stance! For once, logic prevails over anti-Jedi bias.

So yeah, that put a smile on my face.

I'm thinking about the Jedi and Anakin, like you do, and it just cracks me up so much to see any variation of 'they always looked at him with suspicion, like they were waiting for him to mess up.'

Sure, in TPM they're unsure about him because Qui-Gon is dropping a nine year old with a lot of previous issues onto their laps and telling them they really should give him a laser sword and train him in the ways of the supernatural universe bending empathic powers that let you blow things up with your mind and that go haywire if you're emotionally unbalanced. Nobody's thrilled about the prospect.

But after that, honestly, the only Jedi who can ever be said to look at Anakin somewhat like that is Mace, which can be forgiven because 1) the man is Stressed and the people he doesn't expect to mess up are far and few in between, and 2) he and Anakin still have a rather cordial relationship overall, even if they aren't bffs.

But Luminara? Constantly smiles at Anakin. Jocasta? Same. Aayla? Calls him Master Skywalker (respectful, considering they're the same rank in the Order, if maybe not in the Army), is very caring and nice to him. Shaak Ti? Never changes that soft expression of hers. Adi? Big smirk when he shows off, like "aw, would you look at this kid." Plo? You can't even tell how he looks at people. Kit? Biggest grin. Even Piell? He's a grumpy bastard but he's not judgmental. Ki-Adi? Yeah, I guess it does happen once in a while - but he does it with Yoda as well they think he might be under attack from the Dark Side, so really it's him having a suspicious nature, not him targeting Anakin specifically. Seriously, Obi-Wan is more critical of Anakin than Ki-Adi is, and Obi-Wan has an Anakin-shaped blind spot in his soul.

Speaking of Obi-Wan - when he leaves for Utapau in RotS, he has the sparkly eyes of someone so overflowing with love that the gravitational pull of his affection for Anakin is warping the very light around them both.

Jedi freaking like Anakin is what I'm saying.

On the Jedi and Accusations of Kidnapping

This is one of the most common accusations against the Jedi in the fandom, and, funny enough, it's actually addressed in canon! I was watching The Disappeared arc in the Clone Wars (which features Jar-Jar Binks flirting, by the way, just so you all know what I endured to get you all this information), and this explanation was given for why the Jedi and the Bardottans don't have a good relationship:

First point: when the Jedi were accused of child-stealing, they stopped bringing Bardottan children into the Order. Kidnappers generally don't go away when you accuse them of kidnapping, they find a way to do it in spite of you. And the Dagoyan Masters don't focus on combat - it wouldn't have been hard for the Jedi to just force them to give up their children. But they didn't.

Second point: Mace states that the Dagoyan Masters believed that the Jedi were taking children against their will: i.e. the Jedi were not actually doing so.

Third point, though it's harder to see in a screencap: all the Jedi react to Mace's statement of 'we were labeled as kidnappers' with clear sorrow. You can see it best on Ki-Adi in this picture, but all of them are obviously saddened and maybe even a little hurt by the accusations.

@gffa, I hope you don't mind being tagged by a random follower, but this scene reminded me strongly of you and your steadfast defence of the Jedi Order!

So star wars is fundamentally a commentary on our society, and while george lucas was trying to be feminist with princess leia being a badass, his sexism shows through in most of the films, like the narrative treatment of padme, or han solo, and in andor, the that one woman character was facing sexism in her workplace, so we can assume the star wars republic & empire did have patriarchy in a comparable situation to western patriarchy

generally, in real world patriarchy, especially when class is involved, women needs are often seen secondary to men’s, and women are considered a status symbol for men, both in monogamous cultures where the woman’s status and beauty was a factor, and some polygamous cultures where the amount of wives was also a factor. women’s chastity is a massive part of patriarchy, often enforced by religion. Monastic orders are more egalitarian, as they often enforce celibacy for both genders, but are still affected by societal values and biases, as often monks are higher status than nuns, and we can assume that this applies in some part to the jedi order, who most likely preaches celibacy, if not enforces it

all this to say that ki adi mundi has never heard of a clitoris

Adi Gallia is respect for her powers of intuition.

Adi Gallia is a valuable intelligence source to Senate leaders, indicating some kind of diplomat to the Senate kind of relation.

Note: While this book was put out very recently, indicating an intention for these mentions to be canon, I would be careful of taking these as Hard Fact until they’ve appeared in an actual story somewhere (and sometimes they’re already wrong, 2019′s Master and Apprentice shows Qui-Gon was offered a seat on the Council, while this book says he wasn’t). But they are SUPER FUN details to help expand the world in the meantime!

Bored so here’s a bunch of Star Wars headcanons I have; specifically for the Jedi Council members. Some of them are absorbed from other people

Ki-Adi-Mundi is really really really tired of people asking him how many extra square feet of fabric it takes to make the robe cover his head. If you MUST know, it’s not feet, and it’s exactly f—

Yarael Poof, however, just makes up increasingly outlandish measurements. If it’s a youngling, he also says his head can retract in on his neck like a telescope. That usually makes them stop

The Best Jedi Council Tea Cups™ are made by younglings during assigned craft time. They’re janky and colorful and covered with fingerprints and smoosh marks and smudged paint and somehow, tea in them just tastes better

You can almost taste the joy and love they imbued into the cups. It’s an honor to be gifted a cup by a youngling

Yoda has a bookshelf of them. Very proud of them, he is, hrmmhrmm

We jest about Aayla’s oversexualized outfit (as we should), but considering this one post where it points out that Jedi robes are very similar to farmers’ which means they’re basically going to summits and in the battlefield in overalls, that means she’s walking around everywhere in like. Lululemon.

Which isn’t much better but it’s kinda funny to think about imo

Kit Fisto (like all nautolans) breathes through his skin like a frog. He’ll use this to justify walking around tits out as often as possible

He also can’t spend much time in Coruscant due to the heavily polluted air. Makes him sick after a week

I seriously think if you threw a ball Oppo Rancisis would have to hold himself back from chasing it, if not have others hold him back. Crusty toothless white dog headass

The real reason Anakin wasn’t allowed on the council was because they knew he’d do exactly that to him
