on one hand I think "yes add more nods to the 1939 film that's so fun I love the 1939 movie and it's the most recognizable one to the general public" but on the other hand I think "maybe don't add too many references to the 1939 film because if you give any critical thought to it, the plot of the two works together just barely line up and sense begins to unravel if you give it the smallest bit of thought: the entire movie takes place in the span of four songs in act 2"

Idk what I'm trying to say with all this- don't get it wrong I LOVE both properties dearly. It's just funny when one is framed as a prequel when that only applies to act 1 since the entire thing takes place in the background of act 2. All three (book/movie/musical) entities are very unique in their own special ways! It's fun to look at it closely and realize some little silly bits about it though :3

thank you anon, i've been a bit unmotivated but that is a sweet idea that made me want to draw it. i chose book nessa + baby liir because it made most sense to me 🤍

(canon divergence where elphaba took him to colwen grounds when she went for a visit instead of leaving him in kiamo ko. i imagine nessa would be nicer to children than to human adults or animals, because they're purer or something like that. she gave him a definitely non religious book and new clean clothes, which are actually baby shell's old clothes lol)

Here’s an AU: what if, instead of pressuring Boq into inviting Nessarose to dance and opening THAT can of dangerously obsessive worms, Galinda went and said “Hey, you know who’s a perpetually lonely outcast who I would just loooove for you to go dance with? My dorky green roommate!”

How much of the story would change? Elphaba would probably insist that Nessa go to the dance with them, and so she still might have fun and meet somebody who’s into a more controlling, rights-taking-away-ing partner. Boq would attempt to confess his actual motivations for inviting Elphaba, and then immediately start to lie because it’s too awkward to be called out, but Elphaba would probably see through the whole “you’re beautiful” thing and call him out again. So then he’d explain that he would have gone with anyone if it’d make Galinda happy, and Elphaba breaks it to him that Galinda was probably just trying to get rid of him, and they spend the rest of the evening commiserating about the confusing rules of popularity and social gatherings and people not just saying flat-out what they mean.

And the more they talk, the more they realize they have in common. That and they’re probably the only people in the ballroom who actually care about their education. So now, much like the novel, they have become friends.

How much would this change the rest of the plot? What if, as her friend, Boq is the only one un-magicked in the Lion cub lesson, and he helps Elphaba set the Lion free? What if Boq steals all of Fiyero’s character development? (Heck, we could even be seeing a different ship, though I don’t really care.)

If Boq doesn’t get trapped with Nessa and tin-ified, then what is he doing through all of act 2? Is he directly helping Elphaba? Is he just trying to find her again like Fiyero was? And where is Fiyero now? What’s he doing? Genuinely rallying against the evil Witch, or having absolutely zero career because he never moved past his initial attitude at Shiz?

If there’s no Scarecrow or Tin Man, then what changes about Dorothy’s journey? (Actually, I know exactly what happens. She and the Lion both fall asleep in the poppies, and without their non-breathing companions to rescue them, they die a tragic death, the end.)

Without Kiamo Ko at her use, where does Elphaba hide out? Without nearly as many tragedies on her hands (would Nessa not die somehow??), would Elphaba still feel ready to give up? And if she doesn’t fake her death, then what’s the climax? Does she take some new action against the Wizard and win? Is she able to reveal the truth? Does she get to be known as good?

I don’t know. The point is that, back at Shiz, Galinda tries to humiliate two people at once by pushing Boq at Elphaba in much the same way she gave Elphaba that hat she hated, but it actually turns out for the better.

(And hey, if Elphaba still becomes friends with Galinda, and Boq is friends with Elphaba, and Boq then also becomes friends with Galinda… Hey, the guy can dream, can’t he? 😋)

READING THOUGHTS:

im so, so glad i rereading lfay, it is honestly such an awesome fic and the writing so amazing! personally, since this was kind of my first time reading through the entire thing without multiple day breaks, i was definitely able to pick up on less obvious details (which are compiled below!) that made everything so much better!!! i genuinely felt like i was experiencing the story again for the first time, which made me able to appreciate and become engaged with the more emotional scenes and chapters! some of my favourites of these include chapter 23 (i was evidently moved enough to leave a comment mid read 😅😅), chapter 28 and chapter 34.

for sister sunrise, the description of elphaba reflecting over her room for the last time really got me :') the paragraph was written super beautifully and after going through most of the story i reallyy felt the nostalgic and sentimental aspect.!!!! dorothy and the dark was already a pretty emotional last chapter, but in particular fiyeraba saying goodbye to glinda and elphaba reflecting on her relationship with fiyero to get through the dark were some i really appreciated and loved!

aside from that, i loved being able to notice how elphaba went from following the rules to playing by her own since it was written with a pretty clear distinction! despite it, you managed to still write her so in character and i applaud you for it! 😁

i was wondering, was it difficult for you to write each character through all of these emotions and emotional scenes? im super in awe of how well characterised they are, i can't lie my mind started mixing some of the musical and this fic together because of it how accurate it all is!!! 👏

EDIT: i was also wondering, which parallel in lfay is your favourite / was the most fun to write in?

i pride myself soo much in picking up on these! i planned to have screenshots of all of them, but unfortunatly because of the image limit ill just have to describe some 😔 nevertheless, i hope you like reading through this segment and id like to thank @mystic-oni for his much appreciated help in finding some of these!

i loved how this parallel really developed from the beginning of their relationship, with the bickering turning cute banter :) 💕

i HAD to include this one, it is so so sweet and the parallels were all incorporated so well and warmed my heart ❤️❤️

along with these, there was also nessa making the same "you look dreadful" comment to elphaba at shiz and at kiamo ko, each in very different tones that made the second time very heartfelt :')

i was super surprised at myself for initally not finding the lyrics snuck into the poem, but it was a pleasant surprise nonetheless!! also picked up on the mention of sarima from the book during chapter 14!

ANOTHER EDIT: another reference i got after watching wicked again was elphaba's book "discord and discontent" was mentioned by dr dillamond (can't recall in what way though 🥲)!

i noticed elphie celebrating in a similar way at going to shiz and getting into the sorcery seminar, she makes me so :))) SHE IS SO HOPEFUL AND DESERVES EVERYTHING!!!! i absolutely adore how you wrote her so excited and youthful during the act 1 chapters 🥺💕💕

fiyero having the same reaction to elphaba's temper from two different "lives" 💞 i can't help but love this little detail! i also picked up on how fiyero jokes about seeing the present in chapter 20 in comparison to him being sincere about it in the epilogue! super super subtle but one of my favourites !! there was also when elphaba sarcastically suggested enjoying the ocean in ev to considering in the last chapter, i laughed when i first read it and i still do when i think about it :)))

OH MY GOD PEOPLE

I thought of something. So I write (though I'm a bit new so I'm yet to post fanfiction. but I have been wanting to write a Gelphie fic where Glinda finds out Elphaba's still alive. I wanted it to have it not be to basic and their be a certain way Glinda receives this information. So Glinda left Elphaba's hat at Kiamo Ko (forgive me if I'm spelling that wrong I promise I will spell it right in the fic) because she felt like she didn't deserve to keep it. buuuuut fast forward like five years later. Glinda visits Kiamo Ko again and realizes the hat is gone, thats how she finds out Elphies back. I don't wanna spoil the rest lol.

but please if you people would want to read this I will gladly post it after I write it. also tell me, should Fiyero be an asshole, or dead?

The Lenrosis Prophecy: Inspired by the episode 'Happily Ever After' from Charmed (1998 one) (season 5, episode 3). Fiyeraba. Not canon compliant. 72, 000 words. 22 chapters. At a fair before their graduation from Shiz, Elphaba is convinced to get her fortune told. She dismisses what she is told as nonsense. But a few years later, she is about to be proved wrong in a way that she never imagined was even possible.

The Most Convenient Definitions: Inspired by the 1985 film The Breakfast Club. Pre-Fiyeraba. Gen. Not canon compliant. 14,000 words. 5 chapters. Elphaba, Fiyero, Galinda, Boq and Avaric find themselves in detention.

Okay so I’m pretty sure Fiyero is canonically an older child but my new favourite concept is Fiyero who’s the youngest of a big family, constantly being compared to his older siblings and slowly realising that he’s never going to live up to them, and anything that he *might* achieve won’t mean as much because his siblings did it first, and so he stops trying and tries to embrace being the family disappointment.

Well, bookverse isn't my thing, but I'm pretty sure Fiyero is an only child there; and in the musical, literally the only mention of Fiyero's family we ever get is when he says "my family has a castle Kiamo Ko"; so there's no reason why he couldn't be the youngest child!

(And who knows what they'll do in the movies).

I think it makes a lot of sense as a concept- it definitely is an explanation for his Dancing Through Life philosophy if he's far enough down the line of succession and doesn't have to worry about being future king.

I usually just have him as an only child because that is less characters for me to write, haha.
