My name is John Kiprop, I have lived in Kibera for 13yrs. I was once attacked by robbers in the early morning hours while it was still dark, coming from my security job in Kilimani. They beat me up and took my phone plus all the money I had with me at that time, that's how I ended up with the dent on my face. The lights you are planning to install through 'Measuring Lighting Impact Project' will help to reduce such robbery incidents in future.

Books for Young Minds Library

Since last year we have been working to open a community library in the Soweto East neighborhood. On the one hand, the students in our scholarship program needed a space to revise and do their homework while in Kibera during school holidays. On the other hand, students from the neighborhood who go to schools in Kibera needed a quiet and peaceful place to read and learn all year round. To make this goal a reality, in January 2019 we partnered with @kiberastories - a dynamic documentary project that provides a powerful testimony of life in Kibera from socio-economic, cultural, political and environmental perspectives. Our new library opened doors in February. Free of charge to all students and children in Kibera, it provides a safe space for the youth to learn, grow, and develop their skills, their ideas, and their identities. Even though the library is visited every day by students, old and new, young and grown-up, we have a limited number of books available. We need your help to increase our book collection and serve our students community better!

"My name is Dancun Njoroje, I'm a member of Walakolo shg & Youth group from 42 area in Kibera. Today, we came together with other Walakolo members to mark 'International Day For Street Families'.

We hosted some street boys and girls especially those who are lost in alcohol to help them overcome their addiction.

A total of 370 youth from Kibera and Dandora participated in these event through planting trees and organizing small football tournament.

We will have a follow-up event from 19th to 21st April at the Dandora dump site to promote our group activities"

In addition to the wildlife, Kenya is a rich source of extremes and diverse cultural experiences. In 2014, we were guided through the Kibera slums of Nairobi by a gentleman, who was regarded as its mayor. The slums actually function as a city within a city with an intricate layout and social infrastructure. It is always shocking to see the level of poverty in which people are able to exist, survive, and more importantly, thrive. This photograph was made as an infrared panorama from train tracks overlooking the area.
