Object (Card) of the Day : Luminous Blue Variable
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Class : Star
Ability : Variability
As their name implies, luminous blue variables are bright blue stars, known for their characteristic episodes of violent outbursts. During these outbursts, these stars eject most of their outer envelope into space causing dramatic fluctuations in their physical properties, such as temperature. These are some of the most luminous stars known to us and may look very similar to supernova explosions, sometimes leading to classification errors.
Here's an image of AG Carinae, a luminous blue variable captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and processed by Judy Schmidt

Something I love about The Far Roofs is how much of a swerve its premise is if you're coming to it uninitiated.
Okay, so there's these talking rats with a culture of swashbuckling heroism – basic Redwall/Reepicheep stuff.
Also, there's a magical realm called the Far Roofs which exists above every human community, and that's where the rats go adventuring; a little weird, but you can see the precedents in popular fiction. It's like wainscot fantasy taken to its logical-yet-absurd conclusion.
By default, the game wants you to play as a fictionalised version of your (presumably human!) self and go up onto the Far Roofs to have adventures with the rats. All right, now it's coming together: it's like isekai fantasy meets The Muppet Show, with you as the obligatory human character, right?
Then we get to the nature of those adventures: the rats have this whole culture built around questing against beings they call "the Mysteries" – beasties with names like Harpy and Goblin and Unicorn. So basically it's a bunch of muppety rats on the roofs fighting Dungeons & Dragons monsters, and you go up and help them do it. Great.
And then you get to what the Mysteries are actually like, and... well, I'm going to let the following excerpt carry the weight here. (This particular bit of text also appears in a previously published work by the same author, so I'm not giving anything away that's still under wraps.)
Unicorn, which is named Numinous, dwells three steps away and beyond the world, but most often in the Farthest Roofs, where the Steppes of the Sky come down to touch the Vast and Earthen Court. There it is stepping upwards from the world, as it has always been stepping upwards from the world, caught in a moment of transcendent glory that does not complete. It simply is. Melanthios heard the footsteps of Unicorn. Melanthios heard the ringing of Unicorn’s bells. So Melanthios chased Unicorn off to the Farthest Roofs, and Melanthios did not return. Anton and Karel, who were his sons, were wiser than their father. They heard the bells but they did not follow. Instead, they memorized the scent. They gathered swords, and ropes, and nets, and they went out. They brought food and water and all manner of gear. They clung to the roofs with all four feet wheresoever after Unicorn they went. It proved no good. Anton looked up, and Karel to his brother. The world came down— That’s what Karel said. He had time to look away. He had time to bury his head in his paws. He did not see the fullness of Unicorn’s presence. He only saw Anton his brother become unreal. In the light of the moment of the Unicorn, Anton became as a paper figure in the fire. His reality burned out. His shadow seared into the roofs behind him. Where he’d stood, for just a moment, the Steppes of the Sky came down to touch the Vast and Earthen Court; and Anton was gone away. So Karel ran and Karel ran and Karel ran from the Unicorn; and all his life, he envied but was more fortunate than his brother.
These are gods. You're going up there to kill God.
Like, it's still silly wainscot fantasy with funny talking rats, but there's that tension. It's like if Fraggle Rock occasionally took a hard turn to serious cosmic horror – Lord Dunsany by way of Jim Henson – and that tonal juxtaposition was treated as something unremarkable.
Basically what I'm saying is go back The Far Roofs.

[IMG Description - A comic strip with a cartoon of a woman with big round glasses speaking to the reader.
Hello Tumblr! I'm Jabbage, I'm making a game called the Beekeeper's Picnic. You play retired Sherlock Holmes trying to assemble the perfect picnic for Watson and solving cosy mysteries! Since this is Tumblr I need to tell you that you can decide the direction the relationship between Holmes and Watson will take - friends? found family? Queerplatonic partners? Romantic partners? Also there's a dog and you can tell him he's a good good boy. You can play an extended demo for free, and the game is currently funding on Kickstarter. Thanks for checking out my project! <3]
Check out the Kickstarter & Demo here!
You can follow this account for game updates, and reblogging super dooper appreciated!

befriend rats & kill god in a lush portal fantasy adventure by jenna moran
come on a journey with me?
there - past the scaffolding, past the rafters, up above past the windows and gables and fire escapes, if you make it to the roofs -
you'll encounter environments not of this world. rooftop gardens that have twisted themselves into dense forests, church spires that have , tiled expanses that stretch into the horizon and become meadows, gutter-lakes, deserts, mountains...
you'll encounter them, too, if you really look: the rats.
they want to show you these places, navigate them, map them, study them, know them. they want to befriend you, guide you, tell you their stories and weave new ones where you feature alongside them. if you want to make any headway, up there on the roofs, you'll need their help.
after all,
this is a place where the gods do tread. if they find you creeping about their domains, they will find you, kill you, transform you, dig their hooks into your very soul and never let go.
the rats know a secret.
gods can be killed.
you are the key.
the far roofs, currently crowdfunding, is home to some of the best role-playing game i've ever had. participating in several playtests has completely sold me on its viability as a system. notable are its set of unique oracle mechanics that tie into its freeform roleplay system, determining the physical and emotional outcomes of different events. gather hands of cards and tiles to weave together magic that can alter even monumental fates, fight peril with dice rolls, and collect components for spells and make headway on character advancement by spending time getting to know your companions, both human and murine.
it is, of course, written by dr. jenna moran, best known for previous innovative ttrpg experiences about divinity, such as nobilis, glitch, chuubo's marvelous wish-granting engine, and wisher, theurger, fatalist (WTF).
the philosophy of the far roofs is that dungeoneering is about the journey - the sights you see, the meals you make, the tales you tell, the companions you gain and lose - as much as the monster-slaying. each combat is a descriptive crescendo of the experiences faced up until that point, encompassing everything you've felt thus far. if any of this intrigues you, then, well... come on a journey with me?

Martial Arts in Onmyodo the Game
Tumblr media
Certain Travelers in the Onmyodo card game specialize in specific martial arts styles. These styles are indicated in their categories with asterisk marks , such as:
*Suiken*
This 'drunken style' fighting makes Drunken Joe a very random personality. While he is very weak and almost useless in his normal state, as soon as the group acquires the special Gourd item, Joe can drink and becomes far more formidable! Having him in the group isn't too risky, anyway, because when his Fail effect triggers, he simply runs away and may rejoin the group later....
*Aikido*
The Misogi Trainer likes to instruct in the ways of Aikido with his students near the serene beauty of Waterfalls. This means that the group will receive one new Training Card each time they traverse a three-tiered Waterfall! Being the positive force he his, even in death he will gift any other Warriors in the group with bonus defence power! The sensei's wisdom lives on!
*Sumo*
The imposing Rikishi needs to constantly fuel his powerful might, so the group must spend extra time (Days!) in Villages they traverse to eat a feast! (this could be a benefit or not, depending on the Seasons). As a bonus, the Rikishi's defensive power is much higher with any Shokutsu Travelers in the group. (anyone with culinary skills). When he fails, however, all of the Shrine statues in the current Tani will topple and cause an immediate Earthquake!
NOTE: Ninjitsu is considered a special category in the game, and not a martial art per se.

I love checking my email in the morning and discovering a Steam key for something I backed on Kickstarter in like 2017 and subsequently totally forgot about because the developer has been radio silent for the last five solid years, but apparently they've been working on it the whole time and just suck at communication? It's like every day is potentially my birthday.
