Virgil is a little kid and Patton is his dad. Recently, Virgil has started asking for two glasses of water during their bedtime routine-- one for him, which he drinks, and one for the monster under his bed, which he leaves on the floor. In the morning, the second glass is always just as empty as the first. Virgil says the monster is dark and fuzzy and not mean, and it sometimes comes up to cuddle with him when it’s cold and when it’s not too shy.

Most parents would dismiss this or, in the extremely unlikely possibility that they didn’t, would become very concerned.
