So I finished Lord of Shadows last night and I have some thoughts I am desperate to share so I’m just gonna effectively shout them into the Void on here (spoilers under the cut I guess?)
• So really, the only reason I even picked up this book in the first place was for Jem & Tessa and they didn’t even make ONE appearance. Seriously? W*ssas are going to get an entire trilogy of them being parents and married and raising their children but we Jessas have to live with whatever scraps we can get? Fuck off.
• I did enjoy all the other cameos, though. I love Jace, I don’t care about Clary and I’mma el oh el really hard if she really dies after all; Magnus and Alec and their kids are precious and need to be protected and I love them very much. I truly hope Simon and Isabelle are going to make an appearance in the 3rd book too, especially Simon since he’s always been my fave
• At this point I’m truly just reading for Mark & Cristina. I love them so much, both on their own and together as a couple.
• Which reminds me... yeah, I’m not a huge fan of Kieran and the whole Kieran thing. True, he redeemed himself a lot in this book but I really don’t want him anywhere near Mark because he is very manipulative and a little bitch. But, I really loved how at the end Mark acknowledges the fact that his and Kieran’s relationship was/is toxic and unhealthy like !!!! YAASSS MY BOY!!!
• Is she going to make Kieran/Mark/Cristina a ply ship? What do y’all think? At this point I’m almost expecting it but then again, idk. I’m not huge on the idea, but obviously I’m not totally against it, either — it would be awesome rep. Although, idk, it’s iffy because right now the whole situation is very reminiscent of the whole bi people are promiscuous and can’t be trusted to stay faithful trope which ... yikes.
• On this note however, I want to say I love love love love how Cristina has nothing but endless love, support and understanding for Mark??? Do y’all remember back in the first TMI books when Alec was so horribly biphobic? And Cristina is so far removed from that, she gives Mark honest advice and tells him what she’s thinking but never pressures/manipulates him into anything and lets him figure things out on his own, giving him the time & space he needs. I’m just. I love Cristina so so so much and I really hope Mark is going to go pursue bigger and better things with her, they have such a pure and wholesome, healthy thing going on and I LOVE IT.
• On the opposite spectrum of that, I fucking hate Julian. And his relationship with Emma. He’s a whiny little brat and an angsty fuckboy, he really reminds me a lot of Will Herondale in that regard and like... nope. nope nope nope. especially the whole forbidden romance plot is just so annoying, if anything. and the way clare writes about it makes me feel like she purposefully came up with this fugly ass straight romance just to spite the lgbt+ community. “see? straight people can feel what it’s like to have people be disgusted by your romantic feelings for another person too! even if it’s only in this one special situation that only exists in my fictional world!!!” like shut the fuck up. also, if emma wanted julian to think she could never love him, she should have told him she was a lesbian???? problem solved. no need to drag other people into this mess and come up with this elaborate fake dating scheme. sigh.
• Emma herself is just... eh. Clare tries to write her as snarky and sassy but her comebacks are usually so immature and childish and annoying that I just roll my eyes. I’d probably like her a lot more if she weren’t so inextricably tied to Julian, whom I hate.
• I do love Kit, however. He’s the kind of snarky and sassy Emma wishes she could be. The way he trash-talked his own ancestor? badass. Also, look at this tiny confused bisexual bean. Love him. And his relationship with the twins was super cute, too.
• Why does Cassandra Clare have a penchant for killing children? And Lightwoods?
• Also even though I lowkey hate Clare I have to say she did one thing so damn right. And that’s Diana’s storyline. Goddamn when she talked about being transgender and transitioning and all that I actually fucking cried it was so beautiful and well-written.
That seems to be about it, yeah. Thanks for reading, goodbye and goodnight.
(also what the fuck even are the dark artifices. we still don’t know.)
