My media this week (17-23 Dec 2023)

shout out to matt rogers for this delightful new entry to the xmas song canon
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 Bookshops & Bonedust (Legends & Lattes #0) (Travis Baldree, author & narrator) - prequel novel of Viv's much younger days - just as fun and cozy as Legends & Lattes
🥰 Hashtag Soulmates (everwitch) - 44K, RWRB AU - deliberately tropetastic sort-of meta fic where Henry's a fanfic writer & Alex is one of his biggest fans and they work together but don't know it. Hard to explain but fun to read. Good stuff on the nature of fanfic; also hilarious bits where it walks right up to the crackfic line but doesn't go over. I really enjoyed reading something the author so clearly had a blast writing.
😊 In the Form of a Question: The Joys and Rewards of a Curious Life (Amy Schneider, author & narrator) - entertaining read
😍 Tommy Cabot Was Here (The Cabots #1) (Cat Sebastian) - reread, novella; just really in a mood to reread in this universe! Hadn't read this since I read Daniel's book, so it was fun to see him guest star as a 12 yr old
😍 Peter Cabot Gets Lost (The Cabots #2) (Cat Sebastian) - reread; I love all the Cabots but this one is my #1 fave by a smidge. The grumpy/sunshine is *chef's kiss*!
😍 Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots (The Cabots #3) (Cat Sebastian) - reread; Alex & Daniel are actually dating but too oblivious (and busy pining in silence) to realize it. I love these dumbasses.
😍 Luke and Billy Finally Get a Clue (The Cabots #3.5) (Cat Sebastian) - reread, set in the Cabots 'verse but with no Cabots in sight. Just two baseball boys pulling their heads out of their asses and figuring out what they mean to one another.
💖💖 +102K of shorter fic 💖💖

North American Tour: 1000mods & The Well Live @ Bogg's Social & Supply
1000mods is a doom/heavy/stoner metal band from Chilimodi, Greece that formed in 2006, 1000mods consists of Dani G. (vocals/bass), Giannis S. (guitar), Labros G. (drums), and Giorgos T. (guitar). They have released four (4) LPs (Youth of Dissent being the latest release), three (3) EPs, two (2) singles, and one (1) split. If you are a fan of bands like Kyuss, Truckfighters, or Fu Manchu, then 1000mods is the band for your musical tastes.
On July 18, 2023 (just a few days after my birthday), 1000mods announced more dates for their North American Tour 2023 with opening support from Freedom Hawk, Valley of the Sun, Wizzerd, and The Well. For their Atlanta date, The Well (Austin) would be the opening support. What makes this tour very special for me is not only do I get to see a Greek band that I have been wanting to see for ages and who does not tour often in North America.
But I also get to see The Well who I have missed the last few years when they have played Atlanta, but the stars were finally aligned for me in 2023. I feel rather fortunate this year to have witnessed some amazing tours such as this one featuring 1000mods and The Well. Having the opportunity to cross two bands off your “must-see” list is special, especially in such an intimate venue as Bogg’s Social & Supply.
Check out this wicked setlist from 1000mods at Bogg’s Social & Supply below:
· “Road to Burn”
· “Pearl”
· “Electric Carve”
· “Warped”
· “Low”
· “Mirrors”
· “Into the Spell”
· “Vidage”
· “Super Van Vacation”
Check out 1000mods official Bandcamp page or their official webstore today and give my dudes some love!
The Well is a psychedelic doom/proto-metal power trio from Austin, Texas that formed in 2011. The Well has released three (3) LPs, two (2) EPs, one (1) split, and three (3) singles. The Well consists of Lisa Alley (bass/vocals), Ian Graham (guitar/vocals), and Jason Sullivan (drums). I randomly found The Well scrolling through Bandcamp artists sometime after the release of Pagan Science (2016).
The Well’s sound was like a mixture of Black Sabbath, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, and Acid King. The Well’s doomy sound had me hooked after my first listen to Pagan Science. Samsara (2014) and Death and Consolation (2019) are also incredible albums that you can listen to and not skip a single track. Now I finally get to witness The Well perform live and what a venue to accomplish this achievement in.
Head over to The Well’s Official Bandcamp page today and show them some support!
You can still catch 1000mods on tour in the United States on the following dates:
October 26th Levitation: Dead Meadow/Ecstatic Vision/1000mods Austin, TX
October 27th The Freedom Boom Boom Room Lafayette, LA

MAIS DE QUOI PARLE EMINEM SUR LE MARSHALL MATHERS LP ?
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
La ref’ ? : « Vain Vicodin *vrin vrin vrin!* » sur Kill You
Paul Rosenberg
Tumblr media
La ref’ ? : L’interlude Paul
Tumblr media
La ref’? : Le clip de The Real Slim Shady, les paroles de The Way I Am, I’m Back et Marshall Mathers
La suite de l’album lève ensuite définitivement le doute avec The Way I Am et I’m Back où il moque directement leurs bonnes manières (« I’m not Mr. *NSYNC, I’m not what your friends think ») et leur capacité à chanter («Why do they sing? An anti-Backstreet and Ricky Martin whose instinct’s to kill *NSYNC »).
» sur The Way I Am
Columbine, 20 avril 1999.
Pamela Anderson & Tommy Lee
Tumblr media
La ref’ ? : « Jaws all on the floor like Pam like Tommy just burst in the door » sur The Real Slim Shady
Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera
Tumblr media
La ref’ ? : « So you can sit me here next to Britney Spears?/Shit, Christina Aguilera better switch me chairs » sur The Real Slim Shady
Tumblr media
La ref’ ? : « Babysittin’ for Hailie while Hailie’s out gettin’ smashed » sur Drug Ballad
Mark Wahlberg
Tumblr media

The Album (2020)
Born Pinkish (2022)
Os outros foram apenas EPs ou mini álbuns com no máximo 4 músicas cada, como Circle One, Circle Two, Circle Up, As If It's Your First e Kill This Hate.
CURIOSIDADES:
O nome do fandom do PINKISH é "pinkies".

Marie-Gold - La Presse (Baby Girl
22. Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems
(hip-hop, hardcore punk)
Tumblr media
Sloan Lucas - Party poop
20. Wet Leg - Wet Leg
(indie rock, post punk)
Tumblr media
Zeal & Ardor - Golden Liar
18. Brutus - Unison Life
(rock, post hardcore)
Tumblr media
Brutus - Dust
17. 070 Shake - You Can't Kill Me
(psychedelic hip-hop, r&b)
Tumblr media
SeinsSucrer - Le finest piff

#Uncool500 - the big list (the top end)
Follow-up to (the bottom part) and (the bit in the middle)
Remember the #Uncool50 I did in October and November? A lot of other people did it as well, and contest sponsor @[email protected] has compiled a full #Uncool500 from our nominations.
This is the last of three posts, songs that got six or more nominations. Part 1 takes us through two and three noms, part 2 the fours and fives.
Each nomination was worth 10 points, but we could each nominate four singles for 11 points, and one song for 12 points.
Ties are broken in a lot of ways. Acts that had a lot of songs nominated went ahead of acts with just the one big hit. As the project is inspired by "This is Uncool", a handbook of great singles from the last quarter of the 20th century. Anything in that book gravitated to the top of the tie; anything from this century followed, and songs from the 20th century and not in the book came further down.

239 pts 1 I feel love - Donna Summer
So, by a massive margin, Donna Summer proves to be the pick of Music Twitter (primarily on the Isles Trans-Manche, as assessed during autumn 2022).
But there are other popular music surveys. What happens if we put the #Uncool500 up against the #Top2000 as voted by NPO Radio 2 listeners in the Netherlands?
That would be another post.......
Footnotes 71 - "The model" charted separately at 269. 53 - The 1990 version, not 1992's "America: what time is love?" 25 - Combines nominations for the 1995 and 1996 versions; they're so close in time that it may not be clear from nomination order

My French music Masterpost
So since half of the population is in quarantine right now I thought I could make a list of some french/ french speaking artists and songs that I listen to and that you could also discover since we all have time to kill.
Obviously I cannot put every single artist and song I  know and listen to so it’ll be a bit of mix of my favorite albums/ artists of the past few years but also what i’m listening at the moment !
Pop/ R&B
Angèle
She’s a 23 year old Belgian singer. Her first album was a HUGE hit last year and she got 5 news songs out in November too. She’s also been dating a woman for a few months.
I would recommend to listen to her whole album Brol , it’s quite a bop. Also there are two songs about wlw relationship called « Ta Reine » and « Tu me regardes ». That last song was a kind of coming out song btw, we were all freaking out when we listened to it the first time lmao.
Favorite songs: Les matins, Flemme, Flou, Nombreux, Ta reine, Tu me regardes, J’entends
Clara Luciani
She’s a 27 year old French artist. 2019 was truly her year. She’s has an incredible voice and I just love her energy. She’s an amazing songwriter too. Her first album is called Sainte Victoire.
Favorite songs: La grenade, Les fleurs, On ne meurt pas d’amour, Drôle d’époque, Nue, Dors, Ma Soeur, Bovary.
Christine and the Queens
I think a lot of you know her already. She’s also a queer and pansexual artist. I have to say I really LOVED her first album Chaleur Humaine, one of the best albums of the past decade, but I didn’t love as much her second album (Chris) or her new EP (La vita nuova). I mean they’re good, but her first album was really something else. And it’s also just my opinion !
Favorite songs : iT (it’s in English though), Saint Claude, Science Fiction, Half Ladies, Paradis Perdus, Chaleur Humaine, Nuit 17 à 52, Intranquilité, Amazoniaque, Jonathan, La marcheuse, L’étranger
Therapie TAXI
This is a pretty fun band, their first album has been quite popular. They’re pretty unique and sometimes their songs and lyrics are let’s say... bold lmao. I haven’t listen to all their songs though, there’s like 25 songs in their first album and 15 in their second aha. But they also have so many bops.
Favorite songs: Hit Sale, J’en ai marre, Salop(e), Avec ta zouz
Aya Nakamura
Aya is now a r&b/pop superstar here in France and even in other countries in Europe. She’s 25 and you can hear her songs in every night club and party here. Can’t say her lyrics are very elaborated but her songs are real bops and the best to dance to in your room lmao
Favorite songs: Djadja, La dot, Pompom, Copines, Pookie, Sucette, 40%, Comportement
Lous and the Yakuza
She’s a 23 year old belgian artist. She only has 3 songs out for now, but i’ve been pretty obsessed with them. Her lyrics are pretty great too (and she’s SO beautiful omg).
Favorite songs : Dilemme, Tout est gore, Solo
Yseult
Yseult is a 24 year old french singer/songwriter. She’s has a beautiful voice and the beats are also great. I haven’t listened to all her songs though, I only heard her new EP Noir which is great.
Favorite songs: Corps, Nos souvenirs, Noir, 5H
Indie/electro rock/folk :
Pomme
Pomme is very famous in the LGBTQ community in France, but i haven’t listened much to her songs (yet). She’s a 24 year old french and lesbian singer songwriter. Her songs talk about love, anxiety, and even death. She has a such beautiful voice too.
Favorite songs: On brûlera, A peu près, Anxiété, Je sais pas danser
The Dø
The Dø are a finnish/french duo and also one of my favorite band (they sing in english though). They made of of my favorite albums of the last decade, Shake Shook Shaken, which came out in 2014. Their first albums sounded more folk/indie rock, but their third album is much more electro. And the album is about the break up of the lead singer, Olivia Merilahti, and the musician, Dan Levy. One of my favorite song of all time is in their second album Both Ways Open Jaws and is called Too Insistent.
Favorite songs: On my shoulders, Too Insistent, Sparks, Despair Hangover & Ecstasy, Opposite Ways, Anita No!, Nature Will Remain.
Izia
Izia is a singer but also an actress, you may know her from La Belle Saison, Samba, or Un peuple et son roi. I listened a lot to her third album La vague, that was released in 2015. it’s much more electro that what she used to do before. Her two first albums were much more rock albums. She’s got a new album out but i haven’t listen to it yet.
Favorite songs: Hey, La vague, You, Les ennuis, Bridges, Tomber
Mansfield.YTA
The band is composed of 2 women, Julia Lanoë et Carla Pallone. Julia is in other bands/ projects such as Sexy Sushi and Kompromat. Unlike those two last bands that are very electro, Mansfield is something more nuanced. It sounds more like indie folk and mixes different style. You can hear electric instruments but also violin, harmonium, piano etc. And it’s pretty melodramatic.  They sing in french and english.
Favorite songs: Et demain déja, Pour oublier je dors, Mon amoureuse, Gilbert De Clerc
Electro :
Stromae
You might have heard of that Belgian guy. His album Racine Carré (released in 2013) is too me the best of the decade and his song “Papaoutai” was a huge hit in Europe. He’s a pure genius. His lyrics are super deep and usually quite dark but he makes incredible beats that are very electro. If his second album is definitely his most popular album, his first one Cheese, was also so so great and his first single “Alors on Danse” was a huge hit (Kanye West did a remix of it). He also directed Billie Eilish’s “Hostage” music video. That dude is just incredible. But after his huge success his did a burn out and his mental health got very bad. He stopped making music since then.
Favorite songs: Peace or Violence, Alors on danse, Dodo, Je Cours, House’llelujah, papaoutai, bâtard, ave cesaria, tous les mêmes, formidable humain à l’eau, sommeil
Rap :
I have to say i’ve been listening to a lot of french rap this past couple of years so i won’t list all the rappers i listen to, especially since i’m pretty sure most of you aren’t interested in rap. But I still have to list some of them that have been very popular recently. France has a huge and very diverse rap culture.
Fauve
Actually that collective is actually not a rap band at all. They do more like spoken word songs but didn’t where also to put them lol. The band broke up 5 years but I still listen to them a lot today. It’s one of my fav band too. Their lyrics are really well written and beautiful. It usually talks about the “youth malaise” and their frustrations, heartbreaks and anger etc. They made 1 EP et 2 LP.
Favorite songs: Blizzard, Cock Music Smart Music, Nuits Fauves, Haut les Coeurs, Rub a Dub, Voyous, Infirmière, Vieux frères, Lettre à Zoé, Paraffine, Tallulah, T.R.W, Les Hautes Lumières
Meryl
Meryl is a 24 year old french martinican rapper. Before making her own music she used to write and compose melodies for other famous french rappers. She’s very influenced by her roots and and she also sings some of her songs in creole. I love how different and diverse her music is.
Favorite songs: Coucou, AH LALA, Béni, Désolé, La brume
Aloïse Sauvage
Aloïse is a multi talented french singer/ actress/ dancer. She released her first EP in 2019 called Jimy and her very first album Dévorantes was released in February 2020. She’s definitely a queer artist (99% sure she’s lesbian but she’s never confirmed it so anyway + her little sister is 100% a lesbian aha) and she talks about lgbtq issues in some of her songs, but also about her own issues and all. Her lyrics are beautifully written. And she’s also a ray of sunshine so there’s nothing to dislike about her haha.
Favorite songs: Dévorantes, Si on s’aime, A l’horizontale, Et cette tristesse, Jimy, Présentement, L’orage
Roméo Elvis
Roméo isn’t french but belgian. He’s the big brother of Angèle. I actually knew about her because of him. He’s less known than her now obviously but he’s still quite popular. His rap is pretty soft and chill. I preferred his collaborations with Le Motel (who was his producer) more than his “solo” album but he still got some good songs on his last album.
Favorite songs: Morale, Nappeux, Drôle de question, Bébé aime la drogue, J’ai vu (feat. Angèle), Lenita, Chocolat, Normal, Dis-moi
Lomepal
Lomepal is a french rapper. He’s known for writing songs that are pretty elaborated with chill and melodic beats. I also call is rap “soft”. He usually talks about his loneliness and insecurities
Favorite songs: 70, Yeux disent, Club, Trop beaux, 1000°C, X-Men, Plus de larmes
PNL
PNL is the most popular cloud rap band of the past few of years. They’re two brothers NOS and Ademo and they’re famous for using vocoder when they rap. Like a lot of vocoder lol. But they’re also very known for working with some of the best beat makers in the industry. If the way they rap is sometimes pretty hard, their beats are very chill and cool. In their songs they talk a lot of their life as dealers in the french banlieue, their struggles, how tough their lives were but also how their lives today isn’t set and how they’re not necessarily happier today. Their third album “Dans la légende” was a huuuuge hit in France, and their latest album “Deux frères” just as much if not more.
Other songs that I listen to at the moment :
“Le temps est bon” - Bon Entendeur (electro)
“De mon âme à ton âme” - Kompromat (electro)
“Reste” - Maitre Gims feat Sting (pop)
“Blanche” - Maes (rap)
“La complainte du soleil” - Laura Cahen (from I Lost My Body OST)
Some french speaking “classic” songs that  I listen to and that you probably don’t know (from the 50′s to 00′s) :
“Foule sentimentale” - Alain Souchon
“Mistral gagnant” - Renaud
“Sensualité” - Axelle Red
“Manhattan Kaboul” - Renaud feat. Axelle Red
“Onde sensuelle” - M
“Et dans 150 ans” - Raphaël
“A la faveur de l’automne” - Tété
“L’aventurier” - Indochine
French LGBTQ+ artists
This past few years a few lgbtq artists have blown up here and like 4 lesbian artists have been nominated for best new artist this year at the french grammy award called Victoire de la musique (and one of them one the award, Pomme). Unfortunately i’m not very good at discovering new artists so i’m quite late and i haven’t been able to listen to a lot of them. But if you want to discover them yourself here are few lgbtq artists:
Already mentioned: Angèle, Pomme, Julia Lanoë/ Rebekka Warrior (Sexy Sushi, Kompromat, Mansfield.YTA), Christine and the Queens, Aloïse Sauvage
More : Hoshi,  Suzane, Eddy de Pretto, Safia Nolin (she’s from Quebec)

“Today Like Yesterday Against Fascism with Every Means Necessary"
Photo © Gary Freitas PhD
Fugazi, Centro Popolare Autogestito, Florence, ITALY 6/14/95 (FLS #0688)
This is pretty much the only Fugazi live recording I have been listening to these last couple of months. It documents events which played out more than twenty-five years ago in Firenze, Italy, yet it has not lost a shred of its relevance, importance and urgency since.
The year is 2020 right now, and as racism, fascism, authoritarianism and related -isms go full beast-mode, I find comfort, meaning, and hope in this recording, which, besides a great sounding and well-performed gig overall, features a very powerful and definitely uplifting rendering of Sweet and Low to close out this particular night in Firenze history.
Imagine Guy and Ian hitting the opening notes on their guitars while Brendan plays a bit off the rim when all of a sudden the audience hijacks the instrumental, their voices growing louder and louder singing Bella Ciao in unison, a song that quite recently became popular (again) through the acclaimed Netflix series La Casa de Papel or The Money Heist, but dates back much further and particularly appears to have gained traction as an anthem of the anti-fascist partisans fighting the Nazi occupation during the Second World War (1939-1945).
In this context, Bella Ciao essentially tells the story of a partisan, saying goodbye to his beautiful woman or girlfriend in the morning and leaving to fight the invader, dying doing so and requesting his fellow combatants to bury him up in the mountains under the shadow of a beautiful flower, “the flower of the partisan who died for freedom.”
Once the Firenze audience concludes its lyrical voyage, Joe gently leads the band and listeners into the rest of Sweet and Low to end the set, after which Ian thanks everyone present “for the most beautiful thing all night”, as a token of the band’s profound appreciation. Some more words of praise are dedicated to the fabulous space itself (this show traces back to the first out of just two times Fugazi would play the city of Firenze with both shows taking place at the CPA), as well as to the state of the toilets (”toilets are our friends”).
Other things of note include the Red Medicine rarity Combination Lock as set opener here, which appears to have been played live just once in 1994 and merely 20 times in 1995 before being put on the shelf indefinitely (6 times on US soil, and 14 times in Europe), the debut EP consecutive quartet (Ian notably struggles with an out of tune guitar, but it does add to the authenticity of the moment) and a very strong encore altogether.
Presented are 22 songs total, taken off of Red Medicine (8), In on the Kill Taker (3), Steady Diet of Nothing (3), Repeater (3), the Margin Walker EP (1) and debut 7 Songs EP (4).
The set list:
1. Intro 2. Combination Lock 3. Reclamation 4. Sieve-Fisted Find 5. Interlude 1 6. Styrofoam 7. Target 8. Back To Base 9. Interlude 2 10. Blueprint 11. Interlude 3 12. Stacks 13. Exit Only 14. Interlude 4 15. Bed For The Scraping 16. Interlude 5 17. Fell, Destroyed 18. By You 19. Interlude 6 20. Bad Mouth 21. Interlude 7 22. Bulldog Front 23. Waiting Room 24. Give Me The Cure 25. Interlude 8 26. Returning The Screw 27. Smallpox Champion 28. Encore 29. Long Distance Runner 30. Forensic Scene 31. Promises 32. Sweet and Low 33. Outro

Clipping (stylized as clipping.) is an American experimental hip hop group from Los Angeles, California. The group consists of rapper Daveed Diggs and producers William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes.(4)
History(edit)
Diggs and Hutson met in grade school, and Hutson and Snipes were college roommates.(6) The group began in 2009 as a remix project, with Hutson and Snipes taking a cappellas of mainstream rap artists and making power electronics and noise remixes of them to amuse themselves. Diggs joined in 2010 and began to write his own raps over their compositions.(5) They self-released their first album, midcity, on their website on February 5, 2013.(7) Though their expectations were low, and despite minimal promotion, the album was well-received, and five months later, they signed to Sub Pop. Their second album, CLPPNG, was released on June 10, 2014.(5)
The group does not see their abrasive sound as a rejection of mainstream hip hop or reaction against it, but as part of a hip hop tradition, including the likes of Dr. Dre and Public Enemy producers The Bomb Squad, who experimented with production and also used harsh, musique concrète-esque techniques in their music. Similarly, they think of themselves as a rap group rather than industrial-rap, noise-rap, or other mash-up genres.(5)
On June 14, 2016, they released an EP, Wriggle.(8) They then released their second studio album, Splendor & Misery, later on September 9.(9) A science fiction concept album, Splendor & Misery was nominated for the 2017 Hugo Awards in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form)' on April 4, 2017.(10)
In 2017, the group released a single, 'The Deep'. The song was nominated for a Hugo Award in 2018, their second consecutive nomination in the 'Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form)' category.(11)
On September 28, 2018, the group's song 'Stab Him in the Throat' was released as part of The Rick and Morty Soundtrack. This album was released by Sub Pop and Adult Swim and featured songs from episodes of Rick and Morty.
On August 14, 2019, the group released a lyric video to YouTube for a new song titled 'Nothing Is Safe', which borrowed heavily from the aesthetics of 1970s and '80s horror films like Halloween and the soundtrack works of John Carpenter. This was coupled with the announcement that their third full-length record, There Existed an Addiction to Blood, would be released on October 18 of the same year.(12)
On September 12, 2019, a second lyric video was released to YouTube to promote There Existed an Addiction to Blood. The track, titled 'La Mala Ordina' featured guest appearances from rappers Elcamino and Benny the Butcher, with additional production from noise artist The Rita.(13)
On October 3, 2019, a music video for the track 'Blood of the Fang' was released to YouTube to promote There Existed an Addiction to Blood.
On November 29, 2019, the band released a three-song EP further exploring the world of 'The Deep'. The EP was also further developed into a novel of the same name by writer Rivers Solomon; the members of clipping. are listed as co-authors. The Deep won the Lambda Literary Award for science fiction, and was nominated for Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards.
On June 19, 2020, they released the track 'Chapter 319' on Bandcamp, along with a previously SoundCloud-only track 'Knees on the Ground', with all proceeds from the sales donated to organizations dedicated to racial justice. 'Chapter 319' was recorded during the protests after the killing of George Floyd, while 'Knees on the Ground' was originally recorded after the shooting of Michael Brown in 2014.
On August 26, 2020, they announced the album Visions of Bodies Being Burned, a companion piece to There Existed an Addiction to Blood; they also released the single 'Say the Name' on the same day. The album was released on October 23 through Sub Pop.
On November 1, 2020, on their YouTube channel, they livestreamed a performance of the first variation of the socialist anthem The People United Will Never Be Defeated! – playing on a tape recorder, under a small flame, on loop, with the picture slowly distorting – until the 2020 United States presidential election was called. The performance was for a movement called '#BeginWithTheBallot' by Alarm Will Sound.(14)
On December 4, 2020, Daveed Diggs released a video in partnership with the Disney Channel entitled 'Puppy for Hanukkah'. The track was produced by clipping. bandmates Hutson and Snipes.(15)
On December 25th, 2020, a music video for the track 'Piano Burning' was released to YouTube to promote There Existed an Addiction to Blood.
Style and influences(edit)
The group has drawn comparisons to the likes of Dälek, Death Grips, My Bloody Valentine,(4)Tim Hecker and Shabazz Palaces.(16)The Guardian described their sound as 'the sort of shrill thrills you imagine could function as incidental soundtrack music for a documentary about abattoirs or might conceivably be the work of a young band intent on twisting industrial metal into brutal new shapes. With rapping on top.'(4)Rolling Stone called them '(n)imble-tongued, beat-fractured L.A. hip-hop spilled over the abrasive crunches, squeals, clangs, slurps, and static of experimental musique concrète.'(17)
As part of their experimental style, the band adhere to certain stylistic limitations. Their instrumentation is derived from real world samples (e.g. using recordings of bottles being hit or bricks breaking) instead of traditional instruments. Similarly, Diggs writes his rap in second person, all 'I, me' language is off limits.(18)
